The long-awaited reboot of the cult classic fantasy film ‘Highlander’ is finally moving forward, with Henry Cavill set to star as the immortal swordsman. The project, which has been in development for years, is helmed by John Wick director Chad Stahelski and produced by Lionsgate.
According to Deadline, Lionsgate launched sales at the American Film Market for the reboot, which is expected to have a budget of over $100 million and start production in 2024. The studio is targeting a 2026 release date, but no official date has been confirmed yet.
The original ‘Highlander’ film, released in 1986, starred Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod, a Scottish warrior who discovers he is one of a rare breed of immortals who can only be killed by decapitation. He must fight against other immortals in a centuries-long battle for “the Prize”, a mysterious power that grants the last survivor the ability to shape the world. The film...

In a thrilling announcement for film enthusiasts, Henry Cavill, previously acclaimed for his roles in ‘Superman’ and ‘The Witcher,’ is confirmed to lead the upcoming reboot of the iconic ’80s fantasy flick – ‘Highlander.’ Directed by Chad Stahelski, renowned for his work on the ‘John Wick’ series, this project promises to merge the grandeur of the original movie with a touch of modern cinematic brilliance.
The original ‘Highlander,’ which graced the silver screen back in 1986, featured the likes of Christopher Lambert, Clancy Brown, and Sean Connery. It painted a world where immortals roamed modern-day New York City, pursuing one another in a relentless quest for power. With the tagline “There can be only one,” it paved the way for a series of sequels and TV spin-offs. Queen’s unforgettable soundtrack only added to its legacy.

It was announced back in 2021 that Henry Cavill (“The Witcher”) was in talks to star in a Highlander reboot from director Chad Stahelski (John Wick), but it’s now been two years since we’ve heard a peep about the project. That long period of silence has been shattered, however, as Deadline reports that Lionsgate is bringing the project to the American Film Market.
Deadline details, “For the first time, Lionsgate will be launching sales at the AFM on their long-gestating fantasy reboot. We hear this will be a big-budget proposition, north of $100M. Stahelski himself has previously talked about it as akin to John Wick with swords.”
“The team is eyeing a 2024 start,” Deadline also notes in their report.
Mike Finch wrote the current draft of the Highlander reboot screenplay.

Exclusive: In the world of Highlander reboots, there can still only be one…and it’s a good one at that.
For the first time, Lionsgate will be launching sales at the AFM on their long-gestating fantasy reboot which has Henry Cavill aboard to star as the eponymous Scottish swordsman and John Wick filmmaker Chad Stahelski set to direct.
We hear this will be a big-budget proposition, north of $100M. Stahelski himself has previously talked about it as akin to John Wick with swords. The team is eyeing a 2024 start.
This will be welcome news for AFM buyers whose pool of pre-sale projects has been diminished by the ongoing strike.
The new movie will be based on the 1986 original, which starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown as immortal beings, hunting down one another and collecting more power. The time-jumping film — with its “There can be only one” tagline...

The long development of a new Masters Of The Universe movie continues this morning, with the news that Terry Rossio has been handed the keys to Castle Grayskull and set to work on a new screenplay. Rossio, co-writer of this year's The Lone Ranger (which is better than you've heard, by the way: even Quentin Tarantino says so), as well as the Pirates Of The Caribbean and Zorro movies, is the latest in a long line of writers trying to crack the material. He takes over from most recent incumbents Alex Litvak and Mike Finch, the writers of Predators.Masters Of The Universe, if you were born after the '80s and need an explanation, was a Mattel toy line and Filmation cartoon series. It centred on Adam, Prince of Eternia and defender of the secrets of Castle Grayskull. Fabulous powers were revealed to him on the day that, for reasons best known to himself,...

The Hollywood Reporter have revealed that Terry Rossio - co-writer of The Lone Ranger and Pirates of the Caribbean movies - has been brought on board by Columbia Pictures to work on the screenplay for Masters of the Universe. Escape Artists' Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch are producing, while the site mentions that the film was at one point going by the name of Grayskull. Regardless of what it ends up being called, it no longer has a director; G.I. Joe: Retaliation helmer John Chu has departed the project. Michael Finch, Alex Litvak and Richard Wenk all worked on previous drafts. How do you guys feel about this news?...

Jon M. Chu was announced as the director for He-Man and The Master of the Universe back in July of last year but details on the project have been piecemeal ever since. The Sony and Escape Artist joint venture will see Chu at the helm of a contemporary take on the classic 80's toyline and cartoon series. The project is currently working off a script from Alex Litvak (Predators, The Three Musketeers) and Mike Finch (Predators, American Assassin, Hitman Reboot). Speaking to IGN during press for G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Chu updated the status of the project. "We're still early but we're deep in experimenting. This is the most fun phase for me because we get to try everything we've ever wanted to try in [Masters of the Universe] and then we get to throw out all the things that don't work, which is most of it. Filmmaker Jon M. Chu ("G.I. Joe: Retaliation") says he hopes to land Dolph Lundgren for a cameo in the "Masters of the Universe" reboot to which Chu is attached to direct.
Lundgren played He-Man in the original 1987 live-action film version of the toy line and animated series about the warrior, the last hope for the magical land of Eternia which has been ravaged by the evil Skeletor.
""I'm working on Masters of the Universe right now, and that's something that I, also, since I was a kid, have really, really loved. It's a totally different universe than Joe, but really fun. It has a whole world to play with, and I really love that. I love the idea of a challenge, because, tonally, that one is really tough to do.

It was in 2007 that plans to revamp Masters of the Universe for the big screen were revealed, then with Justin Marks wielding the pen, and as script details emerged a year later I was asking: Who has the power of Grayskull to play He-Man in new movie adaptation?
Well, we're still asking and we're still waiting, but the project has shown fresh signs of life with news from Variety that Richard Wenk has now been appointed to rework the screenplay.
Wenk previously worked on The Mechanic, The Expendables 2 and the upcoming feature film adaptation of TV series The Equalizer (with Denzel Washington in the Edward Woodward role).
Jon M. Chu is set to direct the Masters of the Universe film, which had earlier been titled Grayskull. Writers Alex Litvak and Mike Finch also worked on the script after they were brought on board in 2010.

How long has the He-Man movie been bouncing around? It seems like forever.
A while ago it was announced the Sony tapped GI Joe: Retaliation director John M. Cho to direct the new Masters of the Universe film.
Richard Wenk, who wowed Sony with his script for The Equalizer, will be rewriting Masters of the Universe. The original script was by Alex Litvak and Mike Finch and was title Greyskull. I can only assume Sony went with the new title because they want to remind us of how awesome the Dolph Lundgren movie was?
Okay, let’s talk casting: Who do you want to see as He-Man? Man At Arms? Teela? Skeletor? Beastman? Evil-Lyn? Who was that dude that smelled like a skunk… Skunkator? Stink-a-nator? Stinky McSmells-a-lot?

Tell me about the loneliness of good, He-Man. Is it equal to the loneliness of evil? Oh, dear Skeletor, so many memories… Well, here comes the news that Richard Wenk is now on board to rewrite Masters of the Universe. You know, He-Man and company? As you probably remember, Jon M. Chu is all set to direct the movie, and now, with Wenk on board, you must admit that we have quite interesting team behind the whole thing.
So, in case you forgot, I will remind you that Alex Litvak and Mike Finch wrote the initial draft of the script, originally titled Grayskull. Of course – everything is based on the popular Mattel toy line that originated in 1982, and I’m sure we all remember that 1987 live-action film with Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella in the leading roles.

The upcoming remake of Masters of the Universe took a big step forward this past summer when it was announced that Sony Pictures and Escape Artists had hired G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon M. Chu to bring the character known as He-Man back to the big screen for the first time since 1987. At the time the production was working from a script written by Alex Litvak and Mike Finch (Predators), but it now looks as though they are interested in doing something a little different with the project, as they have brought in a new writer to do rewrites. Variety has learned that screenwriter Richard Wenk has been brought aboard Masters of the Universe to rewrite the existing script. In recent years the writer has largely been working on action driven movies, including 2006.s 16 Blocks, 2011.s The Mechanic and 2012.s The Expendables 2, so he should fit right at home...

Wenk most recently penned the script for Sony's The Equalizer, a big screen remake of the tv series which will star Denzel Washington. Jon M. Chu (Step up 2, Step Up 3, Bieber, GI Joe: Retaliation) will direct the movie which "follows a young prince who becomes a warrior and sets out to defeat the evil Skeletor and fulfill his destiny as He-Man". With filming on Thor: The Dark World set to begin this month - and Iceland reported to be a primary location for this grittier and less glossy sequel - it seems we are in for a cinematic treat.
Tom Hiddleston, who returns as villainous god Loki, told Total Film: "I don't want to give too much away. But I can guarantee that you won't be disappointed.
"Alan Taylor's vision of Thor 2 is utterly brilliant. The journey continues in the most epic dimension and proportion imaginable. It's very, very exciting."
On the appeal of his character, he said: "Underneath the steely cold veneer of his trickster charm is a certain vulnerability and sensitivity - the wounded fragility of an outcast brother and son.
"He is a combination of mercurial intellectual ability, emotional ambiguity, rakish charm, charisma and provocative wit. He has a wicked inclination to mischief, underneath which is a well of spiritual pain.

Most titles from the memories of the Children of the 80s have been announced for film adaptations, only to languish in development hell. Thundercats, Voltron, and Masters of the Universe have all been promised to loyal fans for years, especially in the wake of the success of Michael Bay’s Transformers —with no payoff for the waiting.
Many fans, though, would rather not see their favorites come to life than to see them done poorly. This is a mistake that Hollywood is taking a gamble on by selecting Masters of the Universe to be dragged out of mothballs and dusted off for fans of the most powerful man in the universe—He-Man. Sources close to Sony Pictures and Escape Artists have announced that G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Step-Up series director Jon M. Chu is in talks to bring He-Man and the Masters of the Universe to life.

By the power of Greyskull! John M. Chu (GI Joe: Retaliation) is in talks to helm the live-action film, Masters Of The Universe. Experienced in toy-based movies, having worked on the forthcoming G.I. Back in the mid-2000s (and particularly around the time Michael Bay's Transformers hit theatres), there was a mad scramble in Hollywood to acquire the rights to as many '80s cartoons as possible. Thundercats, Voltron and Robotech were all among the big ones that were tapped for big screen adaptations, and yet for some reason none of them actually got off the ground. The one with perhaps the most false starts, however, was the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe reboot, which went through multiple writers and was at one point even supposed to be directed by John Woo. The property was eventually abandoned by Warner Brothers, but now it appears that Sony has picked up the ball and decided to run with it. What's more, they're also hoping to hand it off to the director of G.I. Joe: Retaliation. According to Deadline, Jon M. Chu is...

Director Jon M. Chu hasn’t even wrapped his latest film, GI Joe: Retaliation, due to unexpected reshoots, but already the young director is being tied to another high-profile action franchise long awaiting a proper reboot. Deadline is reporting Mr. Chu has entered talks to resurrect He-Man in a brand new Masters of the Universe film, penned by Alex Litvak and Mike Finch.
He-Man is well known for his battles with Skeletor every Saturday morning in the 1980′s He-Man and the Masters of the Universe cartoon, but don’t forget a big screen adaptation was attempted once before. Swedish superstar Dolph Lundgren played the blonde hero while battling a Skeletor played by Frank Langella for the 1987 film Masters of the Universe, which bombed mightily at the box office.
Considering G.I. Joe: Retaliation is Chu’s first venture into the action genre, his choreography influenced background could be utilized to produce some pretty mesmerizing fight sequences.

So, Jon M. Chu might be directing a new Masters of the Universe movie. According to Deadline Hollywood, the man behind dance battle films like Step Up 3D and non-dance battle films like the delayed G.I. Joe: Retaliation is close to getting the deal through Sony and Escape Artists. But let’s concentrate on the fact that this means we’re one step closer to seeing The Rock as Prince Adam/He-Man. Speculation? Sure. But it’s undoubtedly something Sony has to be considering, and Chu’s involvement could help make it happen. Right now, the script from Alex Litvak (Predators, The Three Musketeers (2011)) and Mike Finch is called Grayskull but is currently under review at Mattel. A toy company. That’s looking over a movie script. So you know it’s going to be good. Nevertheless, the image of The Rock with a blond Dutch Boy haircut lifting a sword high above his head and screaming...

The most recent script for the film was written Alex Litvak and Mike Finch, and the studio obviously loved it, which is why they are taking the production to the next level.

According to Deadline talks have just started with Chu, who's currently getting ready to shoot a few more scenes for G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which is currently going through the 3D post-conversion process.
The most recent script for the film was written Alex Litvak and Mike Finch, and the studio obviously loved it, which is why they are taking the production to the next level.

Jon M. Chu ("G.I. Joe: Retaliation," "Step Up 2: The Streets") has just begun talks to helm a new live-action take on the classic He-Man Mattel toy line "Masters Of The Universe" at Sony Pictures and Escape Artists says Deadline.
The toys and famous cartoon series follows He-Man, a prince who transforms into a warrior and becomes the last hope for a magical world that has been ravaged by the sinister Skeletor.
The property was previously adapted into a live-action feature in 1987 by Cannon Films with Dolph Lungdren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor.
Attempts have been made over the years to revive it, but the film picked up steam thanks to a script by Alex Litvak and Mike Finch entitled "Grayskull" (that title however can no longer be used).

You see that image up there? That's every reason why Sony and Mattel are teaming up to try and bring He-Man, Skeletor and the rest of "Masters Of The Universe" characters to the big screen. It's all about toys and merchandising and you can bet that watching Hasbro milk "Transformers" to over $2.5 billion worldwide over three movies, they want to taste some of that mozzarella (ie. cheese = money). It's been two years since "Predators" scribes Mike Finch and Alex Litvak were hired to pen the script, and now Deadline reports that Jon M. Chu has been hired to direct the film. We suppose the reshoots and 3D conversion around the delayed "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" isn't bothering them any, nor the fact that before this his credits include two "Step Up" movies and "Justin Beiber Never Say Never." But then again, this is a toy movie, not rocket science, right? And in that vein,...

Jon M. Chu's first foray into big blockbuster action movies have gotten pushed back nearly a year, but that's not stopping him from jumping at an opportunity to helm another big franchise that gained millions of fans with a classic animated series. Deadline reports that Chu is now in talks to direct a brand new, live-action adaptation of Masters of the Universe. Geeks will remember that this actually isn't the first time that He-Man and his pals were brought to the big screen. Gary Goddard directed a movie back in 1987 with Dolph Lundgren as the hero and Frank Langella playing Skeletor, and is largely known for being the butt of jokes and being partially responsible for the death of the toyline in the late 80s. Alex Litvak and Mike Finch wrote the script for the movie, which was initially titled Grayskull (but they have since reverted back to Masters...

Deadline reports that director John M. Chu has entered talks to direct a live action adaptation of Masters Of The Universe for Sony Pictures and Escape Artists. He is currently hard at work on the 3D conversion of his latest picture, G.I. Joe: Retaliation. That film was originally set to be released last month before being pushed back to March 29th, 2013. The site reports that it will revolve around, "He-Man, a prince who transforms into a warrior and becomes the last hope for a magical world that has been ravaged by the sinister Skeletor." Alex Litvak (The Three Musketeers) and Mike Finch (Exclusively Yours penned the script under the title Grayskull, although Mattel - the toy company who own the brand that the film will be based on - are now said to be revising it.

Exclusive: Jon M. Chu is in talks to helm Masters Of The Universe, a live-action film based on the signature Mattel toy line that is in high gear at Sony Pictures and Escape Artists. Talks are just getting underway with Chu, who is in the middle of a 3D conversion on G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and is preparing to shoot a couple of new scenes for the film, which was pushed to a March 29, 2013 release by Paramount. The Masters film revolves around He-Man, a prince who transforms into a warrior and becomes the last hope for a magical world that has been ravaged by the sinister Skeletor. The property has been around for years, as several studios tried to rectify the Cannon Films 1987 flopper that starred Dolph Lungdren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor. It has been more successful as an animated property. Escape Artists sparked to a strong script...

Source: ComingSoon.net via Bleeding Cool Here's a bit of hopeful news for all you 80's cartoon fans out there. While details are scarce, some key execs at both Sony and Escape Artist announced their continued partnership through 2015 and also announced a number of films they plan to make including a new take on He-Man. While details were not forthcoming at this time, it's a sign that things may finally be on track for He-Man to make a triumphant return to the big screen after the less than stellar 1987 take on the character starring Dolph Lundgren. Prior to this announcement, the last reported details on the project back in April of 2010 were that screenwriters Mike Finch (Predators 2010) and Alex Litvak (Predators 2010, The Three Musketeers 2011) would take a stab at the firs draft of a script and that John Stevenson (Kung-Fu Panda) would direct the film. Some movies are born easily: they represent a whole bunch of factors like script, talent and money that happen to be in the same place at the same time. Others aren't born so easily, and lurch towards screens in fits and starts. Case in point: Disney's animated adaptation of a Philip K. Dick short story, King of the Elves, and Sony's attempt to make a new movie out of the '80s toy line and cartoon Masters of the Universe. Both films might be picking up steam again, however, after falling off the radar for a while. First up is King of the Elves, which was originally announced in 2008. A year ago it was looking like it might be bobbing dead in the water alongside Pixar's Newt, but then we got word [1] that Chris Williams (Bolt) might've taken over directing duties from original co-directors Aaron Blaise and Robert Walker (Brother Bear...

According Sony Vice President DeVon Franklin the He-Man film adaptation Masters of the Universe is still on. This movie has been in development for a long ass time, and I was beginning to wonder if we would actually see it get to the big screen. The last thing we heard was over a year ago when two new writers were hired to re-write a script by Justin Marks. Preadators screenwriters Mike Finch and Alex Litvak, are the ones working on the most recent draft. According to Franklin this script should be turned in very soon, and he expresses his excitement for the film saying,
One of other things I'm really excited about is we're doing a reboot of the 1980s franchise Masters of the Universe. The He-Man franchise. Very excited about that. Should have that script very soon. I'm praying that we can start figuring out how we're going to make it.

This one has been on again off again more times than I can count, but there hasn't been any word it since a last April when we heard Alex Litvak and Michael Finch were brought on to pen the script. Slash likes horror movies. Enough so that the top-hat wearing Guns N’ Roses guitar player launched Slasher Films last fall by setting up “Nothing To Fear”, written by Jonathan W.C. Mills. Now the bushy-headed shredder has acquired three new genre properties. Jay Russell is attached to direct “Wake the Dead”, a contemporary re-imagining of “Frankenstein”. It is adapted from the graphic novel by Steve Niles, whose work has been turned into such films as “30 Days of Night”. A deal is being made to produce “Theorem”, to be helmed by “Splice” director Vincenzo Natali from a script he wrote with Mike Finch…about a genius college professor who, trying to break down the genetic compound of an ancient artifact, discovers it’s a relic from hell and that he has unwittingly unlocked the equation for evil. Steve Hoban is producing. The third film is “The Other Kingdom”, written by Philip Eisner,...

Along with an adaptation of Steve Niles' Wake the Dead, former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash has announced three more films that have a great chance of falling under his Slasher Films banner. Dig it!
According to Bloody Disgusting "Slash has partnered with Michael Williams and Rob Eric of Scout Productions (Transsiberian, Session 9, The Fog of War, Mr. Death) and is in negotiations to acquire three new feature film packages under the shingle that will produce edgy, contemporary horror films.
The first film to be produced under the new moniker will be Nothing To Fear, a horror/thriller revolving around two young sisters and their family, who accidentally discover one of the seven gateways of Hell in a small town in rural Kansas. Several directors are currently circling the project, which is scheduled to shoot in Louisiana this summer.
Slasher Films is also negotiating to produce Vincenzo Natali's Theorem.

Timur Bekmambetov is about to launch "Apollo 18", a space-themed movie which is based on a canceled Apollo 18 moon mission. In the film, however, the mission is told taking place in secret. The "Wanted (2008)" helmer's involvement is limited to producing only as Trevor Caewood is tapped to direct.
The extraterrestrial film was sold on early Saturday morning, November 6 to The Weinstein Company, Deadline Hollywood reported. The project has been in production and is said ready to be released on March 4, 2011.
Beside "Apollo 18", Bekmambetov allegedly has another sci-fi movie. The filmmaker, who is set to direct "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" next, is said circling "an untitled secret project that's an action thriller set in deep space", though Deadline claimed he might not really commit until a script is written. Pitched by Alex Litvak and Mike Finch and developed under 20th Century Fox, the movie may start production in 2011.

Exclusive: 20th Century Fox has closed a high six-figures pitch deal for Alex Litvak & Mike Finch to write an untitled secret project that’s an action thriller set in deep space. I'm told that Timur Bekmambetov is circling the project, though he might well wait until a script is written before actually getting involved. The Verve-repped Litvak & Finch are best known for their big spec deal for Medieval to New Regency, with Wonderland producing. That picture, which once had Rob Cohen attached to direct, is being re-calibrated to go into production next year. The duo received sole credit on the Robert Rodriguez-produced Predators, and they are currently writing the Sony Pictures Entertainment/ Mattel film He-Man: Masters of the Universe. Litvak also wrote 3 Musketeers, the 3D movie that Paul W. S. Anderson is directing for Summit and Constantine.

The latest in a line of character bios for the Robert Rodriguez-produced, Nimrod Antal-directed Predators is online, and this time it’s the turn of Danny Trejo’s character, Cuchillo. Take a look at the clip below, which contains the usual behind the scenes and backstory stuff for Trejo’s character. Enjoy!
A bold new chapter in the Predator universe, Predators was shot on location under Rodriguez’s creative auspices at the filmmaker’s Austin-based Troublemaker Studios, and is directed by Nimród Antal. The film stars Adrien Brody as Royce, a mercenary who reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors who come to realize they’ve been brought together on an alien planet… as prey. With the exception of a disgraced physician, they are all cold-blooded killers – mercenaries, Yakuza, convicts, death squad members – human “predators” that are now being systemically hunted and eliminated by a new breed of alien Predators.

I kind of hate Tk right now. There's a story that's been sitting uncovered for a few days, and I've been passively-aggressively avoiding it thinking that surely! Surely! Tk would run with it. Right? I mean, there's an understanding. He takes the comic book stuff and the superheroes and the cartoons and the '80s action reboots, and I take the whimsiquirkilicious coming of age Juno wept stuff. He covers Ryan Reynolds when he's wearing a costume, and I cover him when he's wearing Sandra Bullock.
We had an implicit understanding!
And yet here I am telling you that the dudes who wrote the new fucking Predators reboot have now been tasked with scripting the new He-Man movie.

He might be Spider-Man, or he might not, depending on which website's sources you believe.
I'm talking about Logan Lerman, who has previously been linked to the role of Peter Parker in the next Spider-Man flick, which will be a relaunch directed by Marc Webb and featuring an entirely new cast.
Hitfix reported that Lerman was now the first choice and the clear frontrunner to replace Tobey Maguire. A source apparently told the site that he was is "almost 100% locked" but not yet in contract negotiations for the role.
A day later, Deadline reported that Sony denied this and Lerman was "100 per cent not going to be Spidey and is not on the list of candidates being seriously considered."
Take your pick on who and what to believe. The only issue I see with Lerman as the webspinning hero is that he might be called on to appear in further Percy Jackson films.

Columbia Pictures has announced that their upcoming version of Masters Of The Universe has recruited new writers. Mike Finch and Alex Litvak who penned the Robert Rodriguez-produced Predators will tackle the script. A production schedule for Masters Of The Universe has yet to be released.
According to THR – Columbia Pictures says,
“[Finch and Litvak are attempting to] balance a treatment that would convince the studio it was cinematic and keep the toy company satisfied that its characters were being portrayed appropriately”
The ’80s show, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, centered on blond warrior Prince Adam, who, after uttering the magic words “By the power of Grayskull, I have the power,” turned into the heroic He-Man. He and his allies — Battle Cat, Man-at-Arms and Orko — defended their planet Eternia from the evil forces of Skeletor, who week after week attempted to conquer the fortress Castle Grayskull, which imbues He-Man with his powers.
