NBC’s The Night Shift resumed on Thursday with Part 1 of its Season 4 premiere. Picking up just 48 hours after the walkout triggered by Topher’s firing, was the splintered staff able to reassemble?

Setting a potential detente in motion was Jordan and Drew’s daring rescue of Mac from the forest fire. After failing to get him properly tended to at the nearby (but shoddy) Va hospital, they transferred him to San Antonio Memorial, where Jordan levered Julian into performing life-saving surgery on the war hero by puffing him up in front of the press.

Thanksgiving weekend has always traditionally been a great time to catch up on TV, and all the networks know it. However, while there are near-countless marathons across the cable landscape, which ones actually deserve your attention? Before your relatives turn on the game or “Tiny House Hunters,” check out our curated list of the best marathons happening over the next few days — a few guilty pleasures, but also some real standouts and classics that are worth revisiting.
“Star Trek”/”Star Trek: The Next Generation” (BBC America)
When: Thursday, 6 a.m. through the weekend
What: A mix of classic episodes from both series, digitally remastered for a new generation (and very much appreciated). While the “Tng” episodes selected are largely from Season 2 (not exactly the show at its finest), the “Tos” episodes set to air are more choice — highlights include “The City on the Edge of Forever,” “Amok Time,” and “Space Seed.

Mark and Aaron are joined by Scott Nye to hash out the intricate themes, history, and nuance of Edward Yang’s A Brighter Summer Day. Given the length and depth of the film, we explored it in detail, distilling the cultural and societal clashes that took place in a pivotal period of Chinese and Taiwanese history. We also compare it to what is considered Yang’s other masterpiece, Yi Yi, and we touch on the New Taiwanese Cinema movement.
About the film:
Among the most praised and sought-after titles in all contemporary film, this singular masterpiece of Taiwanese cinema, directed by Edward Yang, finally comes to home video in the United States. Set in the early sixties in Taiwan, A Brighter Summer Day is based on the true story of a crime that rocked the nation. A film of both sprawling scope and tender intimacy, this novelistic, patiently observed epic centers on the gradual,...

The talk of The Martian breaking Gravity's October, opening weekend record began early and really spiked after the Ridley Scott film posted a better opening day than the 2013 Alfonso Cuaron sci-fi flick. However, estimates show The Martian coming up a shade shy of the $55.7 million October record. Provisioned with an "A" CinemaScore, though, this one should survive well week-to-week. 20th Century Fox is reporting an estimated $55 million weekend for The Martian, which puts it $785,112 short of the October opening record, but enough for second place on the chart. By comparison, Gravity scored an "A-" CinemaScore back in 2013 as it went on to enjoy weekends with drops no larger than 36.3% over its first seven weekends. In fact, over the course of its entire 31 week run, Gravity only dropped more than 50% three times. Being a major Oscar contender and 3D event film will do that. I expect big things in The Martian's future,...

It’s the last weekend of August, dear readers, and the summer movie season is at an end. But there’s still plenty of cool stuff coming to our theaters this year, from James Bond to Star Wars and everything in between. This week’s installment of Trailer Trashin’ takes a look at The Martian, the upcoming sci-fi film from director Ridley Scott.
Premise: A manned mission to Mars goes awry, and astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead and left behind on the planet by his crew. Watney fights to survive in the harsh environment and to signal to others that he is still alive. Upon discovering Watney’s signal Nasa, scientists all around Earth, and his crew members collaborate to find a way to rescue him.
My take: English filmmaker Ridley Scott has had a good relationship with science-fiction. The two films that helped put him on...

Looking for any excuse, Landon Palmer and Scott Beggs are using the 2012 Sight & Sound poll results as a reason to take different angles on the best movies of all time. Every week, they’ll discuss another entry in the list, dissecting old favorites from odd angles, discovering movies they haven’t seen before and asking you to join in on the conversation. Of course it helps if you’ve seen the movie because there will be plenty of spoilers. This week, they appreciate the nuance of a meta movie that’s part documentary, part real-life recreation using people playing themselves. In the #43 (tied) movie on the list, Abba Kiarostami becomes interested in the story of a young man pretending to be a famous director in order to take advantage of a family, and decides to jump into the middle by making the situation into a movie. Close-Up rings with dozens of moving parts, but...

Donald Trump accepted the challenge that Bill Maher posed on Jan. 7 when Maher said he would pay $5 million if Trump could prove he was not the ‘spawn of his mother having sex with orangutan.’ On Jan. 8, Trump released his birth certificate and now he wants his cash.
You may remember that on Oct. 24, 2012, Donald Trump posted a video on his Twitter account, asking President Barack Obama to release his college records and passport application so that “the American people will be happy” — in exchange he would give $5 million to charity. Bill Maher poked fun at Trump on Jan. 7, but now Trump is firing back.
On The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, Maher commented that he would love to write a huge check if Trump could prove he was not the “spawn of his mother having sex with an orangutan.”

The entertainment world is still reeling from the loss of one of the true icons of modern cinema, Tony Scott, who died on Sunday after jumping off of the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro, CA. Though Scott received few accolades for the movies he directed, he consistently turned out entertaining hits and his kinetic visual style has been influencing other action movie directors since his sophomore effort, Top Gun, became an instant classic in 1986.
In addition to sending Tom "Maverick" Cruise's career into the stratosphere, Scott helped advance fledgling filmmaker Quentin Tarantino's career when he directed the Tarantino-scripted neo-noir crime-romance movie True Romance, which is arguably Scott's best work. Scott was also Denzel Washington's director-of-choice, with five collaborations between the two, starting with Crimson Tide in 1995 and ending with Scott's last movie as a director, Unstoppable, in 2010.

Director Tony Scott died on Sunday after jumping off the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro, CA. The Los Angeles County coroner's office is planning an autopsy, and the Lapd is investigating the death as well.
The 68-year-old had directed many noteworthy action movies, including Top Gun, Crimson Tide, Enemy of the State, and Man on Fire. He was also successful with his work in television being an executive producer of both Numb3rs and The Good Wife. At the time of his death, Scott had just completed work on Out of the Furnace, a drama he produced that stars Christian Bale; the movie will be released next year.
Though he and his brother Ridley Scott both became Hollywood success stories, the British pair had humble beginnings. They were born to working-class parents in northern England.

"Nearly all of the writing thus far on This Is Not a Film has concentrated on its political context and production circumstances — already legend — and the courageous gesture the film represents," wrote Girish Shambu late last month as he looked back on the highlights of Toronto and named Mojtaba Mirtahmasb and Jafar Panahi's collaborative effort as his personal "Best-of-Fest." "This is entirely appropriate, but the film also holds enormous potential for future analysis by film critics as a work of meta-cinema that asks fundamental questions like: What is the difference between a screenplay and a film? (Once upon a time, in the nouvelle vague era, an answer to this question was simply: 'miss en scene.') Is the 'director' of a film always a single, unified, human person? In a film, can the role of the director 'move around,' in non-human form, attaching at one moment to the...

Meet the new face of German techno: an accoustic trio who've spurned the sequencers to play live – they'll even let you dance
The avatar on Brandt Brauer Frick's Facebook page is a drawing of serious young men in shirts and ties. It's a portrait of the artists as middle managers or It support, reminiscent of Kraftwerk in their Trans-Europe Express phase. When I first meet Daniel Brandt, Jan Brauer and Paul Frick at a Frankfurt design event, they turn out to be serious young guys in sports jackets, carefully unpacking their instruments to play interstitial music for the annual Designpreis – 50 separate awards and speeches that required short blasts of music while the grinning winners find their way through the 1,000-seater hall.
Later that night I see the trio in a grotty downtown firetrap, performing on a cramped club stage, showing the same degree of professionalism and commitment at four times the volume.

Kourtney had to make out with a guy on ‘One Life To Live’ and she says she was incredibly nervous and felt cheap!
Don’t expect to see Kourtney Kardashian puckering up for anyone but her baby daddy Scott Disick! The reality star appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on March 31 and she revealed that when her character Kassandra Kavanaugh had to plant a wet one on her character — she freaked out!
“I had to do a little kiss and I feel like a prostitue and being paid to kiss someone,” she says. “Scott helped practice my kiss – I looked [up the guy] online to see … he is a very handsome guy so that makes it easier. I still was like I can’t kiss him – I probably ate a hundred mints that day.”
Do You think it would be awkward to kiss someone other than your significant other?

There are many things I hate about airports; exorbitant prices for crappy bottled water and food, the seats which seem to be designed specifically to give you a sore back, the industrial carpeting featuring patterns which seem to have been designed specifically to exacerbate hangovers, etc. However, topping that list is the absence of free wifi. Some airline has the potential to make a killing by offering free wifi at the gate for all their flights. And yeah, I know there's the pay for wifi option at most places but I don't feel like spending $10 for half an hour's worth of internet access. I'd rather just be grumpy about it, because that's obviously more fun for everyone. I thought about not publishing this tonight, but then I remembered it might be useful to some of you on the West Coast. Here's your Wednesday night TV:
