Carlos Pratts is on his mark, getting set for success and ready to have his big movie moment. As the breakout star of Disney’s inspirational sports movie “McFarland, USA,” Pratts plays Thomas Valles, the top runner on an upstart cross-country team coached by Kevin Costner, who plays an outsider in a poor Latino community. Pratts had more experience than most of his co-stars, having played Demian Bichir‘s son on FX’s “The Bridge” and he starred in Paramount’s “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones.” The rising Latino actor spoke to TheWrap in advance of Friday’s release of “McFarland,...

Personal Best: Caro Returns to Studio Filmmaking with Feel-Good Adaptation
It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything from New Zealand director Niki Caro, who made headlines with her 2002 sophomore film, Whale Rider, before making her Hollywood debut with 2005’s North Country. After the dismal reception of her 2009 effort, A Heavenly Vintage (aka The Vinter’s Luck), she’s helmed, of all things, a Disney film, McFarland, USA. Kevin Costner, once the penultimate star of mainstream, sports themed cinema, finds himself as the figure responsible for fostering athletic careers, moving from Ivan Reitman’s Draft Day to late 1980’s cross-country coach here. Caro’s film is the second ‘based on a true story’ minority flavored studio flick this year, following Sean McNamara’s Spare Parts, which also relates the travails of a group of Hispanic students overcoming odds to succeed in an organized school events. Beat by methodical beat,...

I cannot believe it has taken this long for Kevin Costner to combine two of his cinematic passions into one movie. The first is obvious: the sports film. Costner has a slate of sports films people hold in very high regard. Field of Dreams and Bull Durham, whether you like them or not, are entering "classic" territory. The other passion may not be a easily recognizable, but Costner is quite interested in race and culture relations. From his (undeserving) Best Picture winner Dances with Wolves to this year's mediocrely reviewed Black or White, Costner really wants to let people know he can coexist with people who aren't just white. So, McFarland, USA brings those two worlds together, and the result is about as cliched as you could possibly imagine. But is that really a surprisec This particular sports film comes to us courtesy of the mighty House of Mouse. They...

There is a recognizable template to inspirational sports dramas developed by Disney. You have a beleaguered coach figure trying to reclaim his former glory. You have a rowdy, unmotivated group of ragtag players that just need to add discipline to their raw talent to attain success. You have an antagonist buoyed by prestige or power that the underdog protagonists have to face. You have montages set to swelling music, and of course, the inevitable down-to-the-wire speech, of which any dedicated fan of the genre could recite a variation. Oh, and most of the time, they are based on a true story.
The sport is different but the song remains the same for McFarland, USA. Kevin Costner continues his dismal streak of performances after Three Days to Kill and Draft Day, as high-school football coach Jim White. After roughing up a student, White loses his job at an elite secondary school...

Inspired by the 1987 true story, McFarland, USA follows novice runners from McFarland, an economically challenged town in California’s farm-rich Central Valley, as they give their all to build a cross-country team under the direction of Coach Jim White (Kevin Costner), a newcomer to their predominantly Latino high school.
Coach White and the McFarland students have a lot to learn about each other but when White starts to realize the boys’ exceptional running ability, things begin to change. Soon something beyond their physical gifts becomes apparent—the power of family relationships, their unwavering commitment to one another and their incredible work ethic.
With grit and determination, the unlikely band of runners eventually overcomes the odds to forge not only a championship cross-country team but an enduring legacy as well. Along the way, Coach White realizes that his family finally found a place to call home and both he and his...

A few days back Paramount invited us to a special junket for the release of Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (review) on Blu-ray and DVD. We came back with some interviews and more!
The so-called "spin-off" will hit Blu-ray, DVD, and VOD outlets on April 8th in the wake of its digital release on March 18th. The Blu-ray/DVD combo pack includes an extended unrated version and some new found footage while the DVD boasts only the theatrical cut.
In the film questions are answered, the mythology is taken ten steps further, and when the witches show up, it's for a hell of a lot more than just to say "Boo." This flick delivers on all counts and is not to be missed. It's nothing short of a gift to fans.
Written and directed by Christopher Landon, the film stars Andrew Jacobs, Jorge Diaz, Richard Cabral, Carlos Pratts, and Eddie J. Fernandez.

Recently we had a chance to sit down with Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (review) director Christopher Landon to get the scoop on what went into his process of making the latest entry in the highly successful juggernaut franchise. Read on!
"The support of the horror community is essential," says Landon of films like Paranormal Activity and lower budget features in general. "I'm a horror fanatic and I've been going on websites forever. You really have to satisfy your base before you can worry about anything or anyone else."
"At the end of the day, you can throw as many millions in advertising at a project as you want, but it's word of mouth that really gets people excited. The success of the first movie especially was a result of the kind of support that the websites gave it."

New Paranormal Activity 5 movie delivered weird thrills, crazy ending & more. Paramount Pictures released their new horror/thriller flick, "Paranormal Activity 5: The Marked Ones" into theaters this weekend. I just watched it, and thought it was pretty entertaining for the most part. It stars: Richard Cabral, Carlos Pratts, Eddie J. Fernandez, Jorge Diaz, David Fernandez Jr., Kimberly Ables Jindra, Tonja Kahlens, and Frank Salinas. In the new flick, the storyline picked up in June 2012 with a major party going down in Oxnard, California. From there, the film revolved around new character, Jesse, and his friends in a Latino community. The storyline was kind of slow at first. However, things quickly picked up after Jesse discovers he's gotten a strange bite mark on his wrist. From there, he's able to start doing amazing things like defy the laws of gravity, throw people across the room with little effort, blow up an...

Title: Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones Directed By: Christopher Landon Starring: Andrew Jacobs, Jorge Diaz, Gabrielle Walsh, Gloria Sandoval, Carlos Pratts, Richard Cabral “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones” isn’t half as scary as three of its four predecessors, but its strong characters and clever story layers do prove the mythology is worth expanding. “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones” kicks off at Jesse’s (Andrew Jacobs) high school graduation. After the festivities wrap up, Jesse talks his way into holding on to the family camcorder and uses it to spy on his creepy neighbor, Anna (Gloria Sandoval). Review Mark Harrison 3 Jan 2014 - 08:39
More spookiness occurs in a spin-off from the Paranormal Activity series. Here's Mark's review of Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones...
Last year came and went without any progression of the Paranormal Activity behemoth in cinemas. There was a teaser for this “Latin-American oriented” spin-off in the credits of 2012's Paranormal Activity 4, but it was pushed back from its original release date to the now-lucrative horror month of January.
And so, The Marked Ones serves as the series' first offering of 2014, with Paranormal Activity 5 to follow on its traditional Halloween-ish release date. The filmmakers have described the spin-off as a “cousin” to the series' main storyline, set within the same universe.
In the tradition of introducing new characters in each instalment, our protagonists are Jesse (Andrew Jacobs) and Hector, (Jorge Diaz) two teens who film themselves dicking around in their apartment complex in Oxnard,...

When I’m not covering superhero movie news news, I keep my pulse on everything Latino going on in Hollywood and usually end up shaking my head at how the ball is being seriously dropped. Not this time though. It took a while but a studio finally took notice and paid attention at how much of the box office of recent horror films have been made up by consistent Latino moviegoers. Paramount took a major forward leap and made a film that not only caters to the fastest growing film audience in the country but includes them.
Opening in theaters this Friday (January 3rd), Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones is not only a culturally groundbreaking film, it is also the first Hot horror film of 2014 which delivers a much needed jolt to the Paranormal Activity franchise. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones delivers the scares and also the laughs which is a welcome surprise.
