Double Oscar winner Hilary Swank (Million Dollar Baby, Boys Don’t Cry) has long wanted to diversify her roles and no matter how many horror flops she leads in-between her successful dramatic work (The Reaping, The Resident), she keeps coming back and fighting for more. She wants a genre franchise damnit and she won’t be happy until she has one! Maybe, this will be it….
Out at Comic Con, Radical Pictures have announced that Swank will star and produce a big screen adaptation of the Shrapnel futuristic graphic novel, which they hope to turn into an action/sci-fi property with elements of a classical western!
Written by Nick Sagan and M . Zachary Sherman, and created by Sagan and Mark Long – the movie version of the comic series will focus on the events from the first volume entitled Shrapnel: Aristeia Rising. Toby Wagstaff (Diamonds in the Rough) wrote the script...

Radical Pictures boosted their upcoming adaptation of their comic Shrapnel by landing Oscar-winner Hilary Swank as its female lead. Variety reported that Swank joined the sci-fi action epic as both its lead as well as a producer on what looks to be a multiplatform franchise with the movie joining the iPhone Shrapnel game, the graphic novels and multiplayer games. Toby Wagstaff signed on to adapt the Radical comic’s tale of a female Solar Alliance Marine in 2250, who leads an uprising on Venus, the last free colony, against the oppressive solar government.

Filmmakers making movies on their own terms is a near impossible feat - if they want it in theaters, they've got to play ball with the studios.
That is, unless you're Colin and Greg Strause, the special effect mavericks behind the upcoming Skyline. Now that their independent alien invasion flick is in the can and ready for release, the brothers are already cooking up future projects, which they happily teased me with in an interview.
While the revelation of a Skyline 2 has been fluttering around the Internet, my ears perked up when the Strauses teased me with their other prospects. I asked them they'd ever tackle a non-effects driven project, and here's what they said:
Greg Strause: We kind of just like the genre...we have a couple of other movies. We have a sword and sandals thing, Skyline 2 obviously, we have another American Bond/Bourne kind of movie,...

I really do believe that the world needs more gladiator movies. It can't just end with Gladiator and a remake of Spartacus every couple of years. We need new men and women (yeah, there were female gladiators too) bashing it out in the sand and blood of the arena.
I might get my wish if Summit Entertainment and Jeff Wadlow go through with Arena, which has to be the most delicious pulp movie idea I've heard in months. (But you know me, I'm kind of easy to impress if its a sword and sandals type of thing.) According to The Hollywood Reporter, Arena is a sci-fi/gladiator epic that shoves a bunch of modern soldiers into some kind of creepy, shifting landscape. There, they are forced to do battle with the finest warriors from different eras in a gladitorial battle. It's not clear whether they'll be actual figures from history...

Never Back Down and Cry Wolf director Jeff Wadlow has come onboard to helm Arena, a sci-fi/action movie project set up at Summit Entertainment.
Written by newcomers Toby Wagstaff and Darren Howell, the premise revolves around a group of modern day elite soldiers whisked away from Earth and to a strange place. There they find other squads of warriors but from different eras throughout Earth's history and the terrain is constantly morphing from one extreme to another. The teams of time-lost fighters must then battle each other, with the winning group advancing to take on other fighters that have also defeated their opponents. The script was sold to Summit in April 2008.
Before moving on to Arena Wadlow had been developing a different project for Summit called The Tomb, which is described as a prison break concept.

It’s been almost a year since we reported on Toby Wagstaff and Darren Howell’s very cool-sounding sci-fi action movie “Arena”, about a group of modern soldiers who are transported to a mysterious alien landscape where they are forced to fight warriors from different eras of human history or be killed. Summit Entertainment has now announced that the movie has found its director in Jeff Wadlow, whose previous credits include the slasher “Cry Wolf” and the teen martial arts movie “Never Back Down”. Now the film needs to find a cast. Chris Bender and J.C. Spink of BenderSpink and Jim Thompson of Original Content will produce the movie with Alex Franklin and Jonah Loop of Pangea Pictures. Summit Entertainment’s Erik Feig and Geoff Shaevitz are overseeing the production.

It's been a heck of a year for fans of sci-fi actioners, and while the news is unlikely to generate the same levels of hysteria as Avatar, Summit Entertainment's sci-fi Arena has moved a step closer to reality by scoring itself a director in Jeff Wadlow.Wadlow, who directed Cry Wolf and Summit's disappointingly flyweight fight drama Never Back Down, was working to develop prison-escape drama The Tomb for Summit but was moved onto Arena by the studio when that project stalled. The arena in question will be the battleground where a group of modern soldiers are compelled to take on the greatest warriors from different eras of history in the traditional mano-to-mano combat. Which sounds like a potentially intriguing mix of Gladiator and Running Man to our ears, or Us TV show Deadliest Warrior. The script was written by newcomer screenwriters Toby Wagstaff and Darren Howell. Arena's producers...

Alright, I know this isn't horror, but depending on how it's directed, it could be over-loaded with gore. Sounding like a mix between two classics, Running Man and The Warriors, Jeff Wadlow has come on to direct Arena, a sci-fi action film that he began developing with Summit a few months ago. The pic revolves around a group of modern-day soldiers transported to a shifting landscape, where they are forced to face off against the best warriors from different eras in gladitorial battle. Frosh scribes Toby Wagstaff and Darren Howell wrote the screenplay, which Summit optioned in April 2008.
