Dan Stevens is everywhere these days. The star of this year’s “Colossal” and “Beauty and the Beast” will appear next in “Kill Switch,” the sci-fi action film from first-time feature director Tim Smit. In the movie, Stevens stars as Will Porter, a pilot who battles to save his family (and the planet) after an experiment for unlimited energy goes drastically wrong. Charity Wakefield and Bérénice Marlohe (“Skyfall”) co-star.

Smit is a visual effects supervisor who also did the visual effects for “Kill Switch,” which looks at times like a cross between “District 9” and a video game movie. Saban Films acquired the North American distribution rights to the movie out of the Berlin Film Festival when it was still called “Redivider.” The movie is based on a short film of Smit’s...

Word on a new spec script that was just acquired by FilmNation landed online today, and we have the very sketchy early details on the sci-fi/thriller known as Aether.
Per Deadline, FilmNation Entertainment will produce, finance, and handle worldwide sales on the sci-fi thriller Aether, written by Krysty Wilson-Cairns. FilmNation is moving quickly, already looking for a director for the British writer’s script.
Plot details are currently being kept under wraps, but FilmNation is obviously quite high on it. "I’m astounded by the level of talent and inventiveness we’ve come across from such a young voice," said FilmNation production president Aaron Ryder. "We’re terribly excited to produce this film. We’re also anxious to learn how to pronounce its title!"
Wilson-Cairns initially developed the script with her UK agent and then finished it on spec. It was brought in by FilmNation Director of Development Patrick Chu.

This year's annual Black List - a listing of the top ten unproduced screenplays floating around Hollywood - was released earlier this week (our own Alison Nastasi wrote about it). Why should screenwriters get all the love, though? Don't aspiring filmmakers deserve some recognition as well? That was the lofty idea behind Viewfinder, a list that ranks the ten best short films, commercials, and music videos in order to bring attention to the creators behind the camera.
The brainchild of Jeff Schroeder (a Wme assistant), and put together by Montecito Picture Company's Patrick Chu alongside Aaron Schmidt of Langely Park Pictures, the Viewfinder list was compiled by polling studio executives, producers and assistants to learn what their ten best short works of the year were. After the votes were counted, they placed each video on a website where anyone could see it.

Deadline doesn't post anonymous lists. But it turns out there's sort-of The Black List for "aspiring" filmmakers (Iñárritu?), put together by Patrick Chu of Montecito Picture Company and Aaron Schmidt of Langley Park Pictures, and conceived by Jeff Schroeder, a Wme assistant. dubbed "Viewfinder", it polled studio execs, producers, and assistants for their picks for the top 10 short films, commercials and/or music videos in 2010. The results were tallied, and all the videos are embedded on the website for everyone to view. Here's their explanation: "Aspiring filmmakers need their venue. They need their list. Our hope was that you would share your love and admiration for filmmakers with us and the rest of the business by submitting your picks for the top commercials, shorts and/or music videos of 2010. And you did. The videos on this page represent your contributions to our list. We see this list as a valuable...
