Structurally, it was a brilliant conceit having six of the seven episodes of the “Apples Never Fall” limited series (currently streaming on Peacock) revolve around a different family member in this twisted jigsaw puzzle of a mystery. Score one for showrunner Melanie Marnich, who had a lot of bitter-tasting family dynamics to work with in adapting Liane Moriarty’s (“Big Little Lies”) page-turner novel. It’s about the tennis-obsessed Delaneys, who unravel when matriarch Joy (Annette Bening) suddenly disappears and hot-tempered patriarch Stan (Sam Neill) becomes the prime suspect in what eventually becomes a murder investigation.
As a result, their four adult children — Troy (Jake Lacy), Amy (Alison Brie), Logan (Conor Merrigan-Turner), and Brooke (Essie Randles) — are forced to confront their dysfunctional upbringing, competitive natures, and toxic relationships in realizing that they function more like a South Florida cult than a loving family.

Exclusive: Melanie Marnich is a huge fan of Big Little Lies scribe Liane Moriarty’s work, but when showrunning an adaptation of Moriarty’s Apples Never Fall, Marnich blocked the HBO hit from her consciousness almost entirely.
Peacock’s Apples Never Fall, which stars 2024 Oscar-nominee Annette Bening, launches tomorrow and is in international competition at next week’s Series Mania, was made with a Big Little Lies-free lens, Marnich explained to Deadline.
“I admire Big Little Lies and think it’s brilliant but I had to literally put it out my mind,” she said in the days leading up to the Lille market. “I knew I had to quite quickly ignore all [Moriarty’s past work] and ask what this book wants to be and what the best way is to honor it. How do I ignore all that came before to find the best voice and vision for this translation?”

Peacock has released the full trailer of Apples Never Fall, the limited series starring Annette Bening and Sam Neill, based on Liane Moriarty’s bestselling novel.
“You can spend a lifetime with someone as a wife or as a mother, but you can never really know who they are,” Bening’s Joy says in the trailer.
The series revolves around the seemingly picture-perfect Delaney family, anchored by former tennis coaches Stan (Neill) and Joy (Bening), who have sold their successful tennis academy and are ready to start what should be the golden years of their lives.
Jake Lacy, Alison Brie, Conor Merrigan-Turner, Essie Randles play Stan and Joy’s adult children in the 7-episode series written and executive produced by Melanie Marnich.
The logline for the show says that “everything changes when a wounded young woman knocks on Joy and Stan’s door, bringing the excitement they’ve been missing.

Greenblatt, via his first-look deal with Lionsgate Television, will executive produce a series adaptation of The Atlantic article “Death at a Penn State Fraternity” by Caitlin Flanagan.
The project is currently titled “Death at Penn State.” Based on a true story, the series’ official logline states, “The limited series explores fraternity life and specifically tells the story of Tim Piazza who fought for his life for 12 hours before his Beta Theta Pi brothers called 911. By then it was too late.”
“We are grateful and fully supportive of Lionsgate and Hulu taking on this project related to our son’s tragic and very preventable death,” said Jim and Evelyn Piazza. “Given the reckless and deplorable behavior of fraternity members and their advisors, the lack of oversight by the University and the National Fraternity...

The Emmy Awards ballot lists 213 episodes (from 118 series), so there will be seven nominees this year under the new rules. There were seven for the first time in the category’s history last year:
“Barry” season 2: “ronny/lily” (Alec Berg & Bill Hader) Winner — “Fleabag” season 2: “Episode 1” (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) “The Good Place” season 3 — “Janet(s)” (Josh Siegal & Dylan Morgan) “PEN15” season 1: “Anna Ishii-Peters” (Maya Erskine & Anna Konkle & Stacy Osei-Kuffour) “Russian Doll” season 1: “Nothing in This World is Easy” (Natasha Lyonne) “Russian Doll” season 1: “A Warm Body” (Allison Silverman) “Veep” season 7: “Veep” (David Mandel)
Only “The Good Place” returns to defend its slot. “Better Things,” “Ramy” and “Sex Education” are among those hoping to capitalize on the open field after being snubbed last year. “The Good Place” contends for its series finale, as do “Schitt’s Creek” and “Silicon Valley.” “Schitt’s Creek” seeks its first nomination in...

Pamela Adlon cannot turn off her mothering instinct, nor the need to make others feel at home around her. This was in evidence last week in North Hollywood when the Fyc panel for “Better Things” took place on a stage dressed to look like an everyday living room. The setting also felt like a safe space for women since every person on the stage was female, from Adlon and moderator Debra Birnbaum of Variety, to the cast playing Adlon’s on-screen family: Celia Imrie, Mikey Madison, Hannah Alligood, and Olivia Edward.
The pro-woman message wasn’t overt, but it was nevertheless important in the wake of the sexual harassment revelations from last year involving Adlon’s mentor, writing partner and good friend Louis C.K. His name wasn’t mentioned during the panel at all, and instead the mood was one of loving support and celebration for what the cast and...

Bugeater Films recently announced that its award-winning film "Between Us", is available now on Netflix exclusively in its original "Directors Cut" on High Definition. The award-winning film directed by Dan Mirvish stars Taye Diggs, Melissa George, David Harbour and Julia Stiles, and is based on Joe Hortua's hit Off-Broadway play of the same name. The film played at 23 festivals in 7 countries, winning awards ranging from the Grand Jury Prize at the Bahamas International Film Festival, to a Best Actor prize for David Harbour at the Woods Hole Film Festival. The film had a 50+ city Us theatrical release through Monterey Media, and is currently airing on Showtime and Starz networks.
"I'm very grateful to Ted Sarandos and his team for giving us all a chance to finally see the film in the original director's cut," said director Dan Mirvish, also a co-founder of the Slamdance Film Festival. "I've known Ted since Netflix consisted of a little three-person bungalow office on the Raleigh Lot in Hollywood. They've come a long way since then, and I'm glad still to be a part of the Netflix family."
"This is the version of the film as it was meant to be seen," Mirvish added. "Netflix has also taken a really creative and comprehensive approach to their subtitled option, which will make the film accessible for both those with hearing impairments, and also those who don't want to disturb their spouse while watching at bedtime. Given the nature of the film, that could save a lot of marriages."
A critically-acclaimed film, "Between Us" has been described as "a sleeper hit" by The Hollywood Reporter, "powerful and brilliant" by Buzzfeed, and "absolutely stunning" by FilmThreat. Mirvish garnered particular praise with favorable comparisons to John Cassavetes, Roman Polanski and Robert Altman. The four-person cast were universally praised for their searing performances and all received several career-best reviews. "Between Us" is a darkly comedic drama about two couples who reunite over the course of two incendiary evenings where anything can happen.
The play originally premiered at Manhattan Theatre Club, and the film had its world premiere at the Oldenburg Film Festival in Germany, and its North American premiere at the Hamptons International Film Festival. "Between Us" was also the Closing Night Film at the 50th Gijon International Film Festival in Spain.

It’s practically impossible to avoid clichés where the on-screen romantic couple is concerned. The happy couple, the angry couple, and the myriad relationships in between have pretty much all been done before, so filmmakers and writers often focus on other elements to inject novelty into a script. Adapted from Joe Hortua’s stage play, Between Us bravely attempts newness in this all too familiar department, and deconstructs some of the many clichés to which audiences have grown accustomed. Though a bit too melodramatic at times—and perhaps even too aware of this new ground it hopes to break— it’s ultimately a strong...

Bring Me the Head of Virginia Wolff: Mirvish Scores With Acidic Marital Strifer
Director Dan Mirvish, co-founder of the Slamdance Film Festival (and perhaps more notoriously, co-founder of the Martin Eisendtadt hoax during the 2008 Presidential elections) has adapted Joe Hortua’s Off-Broadway play Between Us for mostly positive results, featuring four biting performances from an impressively assembled ensemble. A sort of modern day Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? infused examination of the inherent love/hatred backgammon of two people spending their lives together, Hortua/Mirvish don’t quite hit the drastic highs and lows of Albee/Nichols’ boozehounds George and Martha who used liquor as truth serum, but they still manage to create a harshly observed juxtaposition of two marriages, where the best of times and worst of times, if not interchangeable, are always in flux.

In its nineteenth year, the Slamdance Film Festival appears to be pulling out all the stops, thanks to their recent announcement of a very impressive slate of Special Screenings and their all-new Slam Collective, launching at January’s fest. The list of Special Screenings includes a film that may very well be one of Slamdance’s most impressive bits of programming ever, the World Premiere of Philippe Caland‘s Vipaka,a mysterious project about karma with a cast that includes Forest Whitaker, Anthony Mackie, Mike Epps, and Sanaa Lathan. Listen up, Slamdancers, this is going to the hot ticket of the festival. We’re anxious for our tickets already! The festival has also announced the films that make up their new Slam Collective, a collaboration “between global filmmakers using innovative methods and shared experience.” This new section is “inspired by the idea that with digital technology, cameras, online distribution, like-minded filmmakers from different cultures across continents can...

Here's another blast from the recent past (see my post on Vipaka just below this one); a project we first and last wrote about in April 2011, is now set to make its next screen at the Slamdance Film Festival, in the Special Screenings section of the festival. Taye Diggs stars alongside Julia Stiles, Melissa George and David Harbour, in a filmed adaptation of a 2004 Off-Broadway play titled Between Us, written by Joe Hortua. Playbill describes the play, which I haven't seen, as follows: "The story centers on two men who have been friends since graduate school and who begin to drift apart as they find wives, have children...

Dan Mirvish’s new film based on the play by Joe Hortua examines the friendship of two couples long after they bonded in college. At one point the film resembles the classic Who’S Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? with one seemingly happy couple uncomfortably watching another couple engage in a vicious verbal battle. Soon it’s similar to the recent Carnage with a tag team screaming match. While those earlier films took place over one evening or afternoon, Between Us toggles back and forth between the present day and a nightmarish evening a few years in the past. As the film opens, Grace (Julia Stiles) and Carlos (Taye Diggs) are stunned to see old friends Sheryl (Melissa George) and Joel (David Harbour) at the door of their NYC apartment. Cut to their last time together. Grace and Carlos flew out to visit Sheryl and Joel at their remote Midwestern estate.

A co-founder in 1994 of the Slamdance Film Festival, Dan Mirvish is a busy director, screenwriter and producer. Labeled a “cheerful subversive” by The New York Times, and “Hollywood’s Bad Boy” by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Mirvish has made quite a name for himself in the world of Independent Film. He remains actively involved with Slamdance, frequently serving as master of ceremonies and mentor to the incoming crop of filmmakers each year. The festival has served as a launching pad for such filmmakers as Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, Inception), Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace), Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) and Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity).
Most recently, Mirvish has directed the feature Between Us, based on the hit Off-Broadway play of the same name and starring Julia Styles, Taye Diggs, Melissa George, and David Harbour. Mirvish co-wrote the screen adaptation with original playwright Joe Hortua...

I was immediately dubious when I first heard about Kickstarter.com, a website where creative and entrepreneurial types can look for funding for their projects via a limited-time appeal to the masses. I've come to hate the expression "in this economy," but in this economy, I just didn't see many folks ponying up even a few bucks for the effective development of a film, music recording, or invention. And having spent a significant portion of my life looking for financing for creative endeavors... let's just say that it's a challenging process.
But this hardened cynic will eat his predictions on this one.
Although I'm sure there are plenty of examples of projects that don't get funded at all through Kickstarter, and other similar "crowd-funding" sites, a number of filmmakers have been having some real success with it,...

We just learned that Julia Stiles, Taye Diggs, Melissa George and David Harbour are all attached to star in this project, and we must admit that it already sounds interesting.
At this moment, thanks to Deadline, we know that the movie will tell us a story about two couples who were friends in school and whose periodic meetings conjure up rivalries and bitterness over unrealized ambitions that get waylaid by money and children.
By the way, let us also mention that the play opened originally at Manhattan Theatre Club in 2004.
As we said, Between Us is an adaptation of an off-Broadway play by Joe Hortua who will also co-write the film script together with Mirvish.

Rosanna Arquette is about to make her first dramatic feature, Hemlock Drive, after making a couple of documentaries. The film is "about an eccentric mother in Connecticut who learns she is dying and brings her three adult children back home for a weekend." Part of the plot involves the matriarch getting her kids to throw a living funeral, Get Low style, although it sounds like this is meant to be a bit more funny than the climactic scene in that movie. Now Susan Sarandon is in talks to play the main character, with Adam Brody in talks for one of her kids, and David Arquette negotiating a role as a nearby bar owner. The film, written by Jennifer Carta and Mandy Steckelberg, will shoot in Louisiana in September. [The Wrap [1]] After the break, Julia Stiles and three more join an indie adaptation of a play, and Justin Long is one of several...

It's been awhile since we caught Julia Stiles on the big screen (not since the Bourne movies, in fact). Her stint opposite Michael C. Hall on Dexter was pretty enjoyable, though we bet the jilted Jennifer Carpenter doesn't share our opinion. And we've heard rumblings of her directing debut (The Bell Jar, of all things) but that went nowhere.
Anyway, Stiles has signed on to star in a film adaptation of an off-Broadway play called "Between Us," written by Joe Hortua. She's joined by Taye Diggs, Broadway legend (and Mr. Idina Menzel) as well as In Treatment's Melissa George and actor David Harbour (Quantum of Solace, Revolutionary Road). So, hooray, she's still with us On the planet.
