Exile Content Studio has acquired the film rights to the 2007 sci-fi novel Hunter’s Run, which Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin wrote with Gardner Dozois and Daniel Abraham, and Variety reports that Mark Raso (Kodachrome) will be directing the cinematic adaptation. Raso has also written the screenplay with his brother Joseph. The Rasos previously collaborated on the script for the 2021 Netflix release Awake, which Mark Raso also directed.
Hunter’s Run has the following description: Running from poverty and hopelessness, Ramón Espejo boarded one of the great starships of the mysterious, repulsive Enye. But the new life he found on the far-off planet of São Paulo was no better than the one he abandoned. Then one night his rage and too much alcohol get the better of him. Deadly violence ensues, forcing Ramón to flee into the wilderness. Mercifully, almost happily alone—far from the loud, bustling hive...

Exile Content Studio has pounced on the film rights to “Hunter’s Run” by “Game of Thrones” and “House of the Dragon” creator, George R.R. Martin.
The sci-fi tale is the only one among Martin’s body of work that features a Latino lead, making it a natural fit for Exile Content which has produced a slew of content in Spanish and English.
Based on the sci-fi novel co-penned by Martin, Gardner Dozois and Daniel Abraham (“The Expanse”), “Hunter’s Run” follows Ramón Espejo who ekes out a living as a day laborer on a distant planet where he finds his living conditions no better off than what he left on planet Earth. He escapes but finds himself on the run for the murder of an interplanetary diplomat.
While out wandering, he comes upon a highly sophisticated alien race who, like him, are trying to stay hidden. “Survival is his only goal,...

Days before a Targaryen civil war erupts between Rhaenyra and Alicent on the Season 1 finale of HBO’s House of the Dragon, you’ll find series creator George R.R. Martin staying mum on fire-breathing animals and talking up his latest rotoscope animated short, Night of the Cooters, in his Santa Fe, Nm stomping ground.
The Vincent D’Onofrio-directed cowboys vs. aliens film based on the Howard Waldrop short story is one of four short movies Martin is producing in what is shaping up to be an anthology either for the big screen (a la Creepshow) or TV.
Night of the Cooters follows a crusty Texas sheriff, played by D’Onofrio, who musters up his townspeople to take on an invading UFO. The pic played last night at the Martin-owned Jean Cocteau Cinema, where the Game of Thrones architect sat for a Q&a as part...

In director Mark Raso’s occasionally engaging but mostly frustrating sci-fi thriller, an unexplained event causes a massive electromagnetic pulse that fries most electronics and leaves nearly all of humanity incapable of sleep. From the mysterious incident onward, the characters slowly slide toward insanity as fatigue takes its toll, although it’s not clear how everyone on earth immediately recognizes (or believes) that the resulting restlessness is permanent. If the recent real-world pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that early in a health crisis, nobody knows anything, and the resulting confusion tends to be more exhausting than entertaining.
So, at the risk of sounding facetious, I confess that while exasperated ex-military, ex-junkie super-mom Jill (Gina Rodriguez) worries about whether she’ll ever be able to sleep again, I had no such problem. Between its low-energy suspense and all-around failure to grip, “Awake” took me three separate sittings to get through.

"Our survival depends on her. Let's get to work." Netflix unveiled the official trailer for a post-apocalyptic survival thriller titled Awake, made by Canadian director Mark Raso. This will debut streaming on Netflix early next month. Chaos ensues after a global event wipes out all electronics and takes away humankind’s ability to sleep. But Jill, an ex-soldier with a troubled past, may hold the key to a cure in the form of her own daughter. This setup mashes up a few sci-fi concepts - kind of like Bird Box meets Children of Men, with humanity going crazy because they can't sleep, but one young girl can. Gina Rodriguez stars, with Ariana Greenblatt, Frances Fisher, Shamier Anderson, Finn Jones, Lucius Hoyos, Gil Bellows, Barry Pepper and Jennifer Jason Leigh. This looks like it's packed with all the usual apocalyptic movie tropes - aggressive military, crazy people everywhere. Looks entertaining, but not that smart.

Gina Rodriguez is set to star in Awake, a Netflix film that Mark Raso will direct from a script he wrote with Joseph Raso and Greg Poirer. Raso prevously directed Kodachrome, the Ed Harris-starrer that Netflix acquired after it premiered in Toronto in 2017. Entertainment One is producing.
Rodriguez, who followed Jane the Virgin with the Sony remake of Miss Bala, here plays an ex-soldier with a troubled past who holds the key to a cure after a sudden global event wipes out all electronics and takes away humankind’s ability to sleep. Chaos quickly begins to consume the world and Jill may hold the key in the form on her own daughter. The question is, can Jill safely deliver her daughter and save the world before she herself loses her mind?
Paul Schiff is producing and Mark Gordon, Josh Phillips, Matt Jackson, Greg Poirier, Mark & Joseph Raso, Rodriguez, and Whitney Brown are exec producing.

This month at the movies includes a pair of Elizabeth Olsen-starring films, thanks to two features exploring decidedly different release strategies. Of course there’s this week’s big budget blockbuster, “Avengers: Infinity War,” which features the actress reprising her role as the powerful mutant Scarlet Witch, but last week also saw the release of Mark Raso’s “Kodachrome,” which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year. The film, a low-key drama starring Olsen, Ed Harris, and Jason Sudeikis, was picked up by Netflix out of the festival.
Despite Olsen’s role in the billion-dollar Marvel Cinematic Universe, she’s stayed true to her indie roots over the years, continuing to worker on smaller films like “Wind River” and “Ingrid Goes West,” both of which debuted at Sundance last year. As the indie film distribution model continues to evolve and change, Olsen has become a staunch proponent...

Coming across like a thin coat of bright paint over dated decorative wallpaper sans originality, Mark Raso has outwardly attempted a love letter to analog photography, utilizing a remarkable cast and a wide array of scenic locations to do so. However (in actuality), Kodachrome is a succession of gimmicky plot lines so exhaustingly predictable that only a paltry few micro-moment snapshots of enjoyment actually bleed through.

You might have heard the old Paul Simon song “Kodachrome,” a lyric inspired by the Kodak film, but now in the new similarly titled film that Netflix unleashes on Friday, it is a wholly different story altogether.
Kodachrome, which had its world premiere at last year’s Toronto Film Festival where the streamer won distribution rights, comes from writer Jonathan Tropper and director Mark Raso and finds itself at the crossroads of a world moving from analog to digital. But it transfers that notion to a very human and recognizable road-trip movie that becomes the final journey of an estranged father and son as they travel deep into Kansas to get the final rolls of Kodachrome film developed just as the last lab is ceasing that business.
That aspect of this fictional story is true. Tropper got the inspiration from a New York Times story detailing Kodak’s decision to...

Jason Sudeikis and Ed Harris develop a bittersweet portrait of an estranged father and son in Mark Raso’s “Kodachrome,” which hits Netflix on Friday after bowing at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival.
Sudeikis’ trademark deadpan and salty dog Harris make for plenty of laughs in the dramedy, but some sneaky last minute redemption in Johathan Tropper’s script elevates this kind of standard festival fare.
At Tiff last September, TheWrap spotted more than few men choking back tears and sniffling into their blazers.

Sudeikis plays Matt, a stagnant indie music executive who has just lost another edgy rock client. Matt believes in the artist as a visionary, to quote Sudeikis’ character directly, in a music landscape filled with Edm and the white noise of social media.
It’s a belief system that fails him, and just as he learns of his imminent firing a nurse (Elizabeth Olsen) to his sick father turns up on his doorstep.
Harris plays a famous photographer with a terminal disease, and has requested his son pilot a road trip to Kansas, where he might develop decades-old photos at the last storefront in America to process Kodachrome film. Matt agrees, because Dad’s connections might help him save his career, but the acid flies the moment the men are reunited and pumps consistently throughout the trip.

“What have you done with your life?” father asks son after barely more than a handshake. Son gleefully responds that the only people left in dad’s life are employees, and soon enough he’ll deservedly die alone.
Olsen becomes inevitable romantic fodder for Sudeikis, though she has an interesting (if not under-explored) backstory as a self-saboteur divorcee. This is the Sudeikis-Harris show, and it really works.
When the foul-mouthed photographer succumbs to his illness, he mourns the loss of all the love he had for his once-infant son. Feeding Matt from a bottle in the middle of the night was the happiest he had ever been, he says, as he wonders aloud what broke inside of him and led him from that place. Cue waterworks.

It should be said that the film does not fetishize the dusty tech of years past, as the premise might suggest. There are plenty of relics like cassette tapes, beat-up Cabirolets, record players and of course Kodak cameras amnd film. None of the equipment is played up for cheap nostalgia.
If anything, that works in movie’s favor. There’s a moment when Sudeikis has to load a camera, and he recites a poem his dad taught him as a child to make sure the film catches and locks into place. It’s almost as tear-jerky as the hospital bed confessions.

"No art worth a damn was ever created out of happiness, I can tell you that much." Netflix has debuted the trailer for an indie titled Kodachrome, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year. Based on an article by A.G. Sulzberger, the film is about a father and son who take a road trip to Kansas in order to develop photos at Kodak's last Kodachrome lab before it closes its doors forever. It's set during the final days of the admired photo development system known as Kodachrome, with production finishing in 2010. This is clearly a love letter to the art of film and developing film and the days of film, but wrapped around the engaging story of a fun road trip. Kodachrome stars Jason Sudeikis, Ed Harris, Elizabeth Olsen, Wendy Crewson, Bruce Greenwood, and Dennis Haysbert. This looks quite good, it's worth a watch. Here's the first...

Any road trip would be enhanced by a shaggy-bearded Ed Harris smoking in the back of a convertible, even one with Jason Sudeikis and Elizabeth Olsen at the wheel. The three charismatic actors class up Netflix’s amiable road trip comedy, “Kodachrome,” which recently released an Americana-tinged first trailer. Donning a straw fedora with arms confidently outstretched, Harris growls in his ever deepening baritone: “Of course I know I’m an asshole.” Fun ensues.
Sudeikis plays a son estranged from his dying father (Harris) in “Kodachrome,” the latest film from Canadian filmmaker Mark Raso (“Copenhagen”). With his father’s nurse (Olsen) in tow, their mission is to deliver four old rolls of Kodachrome film to the last lab in the world that can develop them before it shuts down for good.

“Kodachrome” star Ed Harris and director Mark Raso sat down with TheWrap’s Matt Donnelly to talk about the making of the indie dramedy, which Netflix acquired this week at the Toronto Film Festival. “Kodachrome” is set during the final days of the still photo development system known as Kodachrome. When it ended and people hadn’t developed the rolls of the film, those stills were gone forever. The Ryder men are relics. Son Matt (Jason Sudeikis) is the kind of A&R dude who believes in the purity of music and his ability to just know when he hears something great, while his dad Ben (Ed Harris) is a lauded photographer who cherishes the look and feel of Kodachrome color reversal film and demands that his life remain “strictly analogue.” Despite their mutually affirmed dinosaur status, they are a long-estranged pair — and then a series of hinky contrivances shove them together in Mark Raso’s amiable “Kodachrome.” The conventional road trip dramedy mines that father-son dynamic for all its worth, but Sudeikis and Harris are very much up to the task, and their chemistry helps the film rise above its tropes.

Soon to be seen in Nacho Vigalondo‘s highly-anticipated Colossal at Tiff, and next year in the upcoming Ocean’s Eight alongside a massive cast, Anne Hathaway has another project in her sights. She’s signed on to star in and produce an adaptation of Jenny Mollen‘s novel Live Fast Die Hot according to Variety, which is not a cross-over spin-off on the Die Hard and Fast & Furious series.
In fact, it is a collection of personal essays from the author that delve into adulthood, responsibility, and proving that you can travel alone without ending up in a Taken-esque scenario. Mollen herself has a particular set of skills as a writer and actress who lives in New York, who has appeared in films such as Crazy, Stupid, Love and TV episodes on Wilfred and Girls. The adaptation is in association with Warner Bros and one can check back for more details.

During her downtime from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Elizabeth Olsen tends to fill her slate with a host of intriguing projects. Coming off the barnstorming Age of Ultron, it was musical drama I Saw the Light that offered the actress some respite from superhero fare last year and, in continuing that trend, Olsen has lined up the likes of Ingrid Goes West, Wind River and now Kodachrome, a road trip drama hailing from director Mark Raso (Copenhagen).

Jason Sudeikis and Ed Harris are attached and Elizabeth Olsen is in talks to star in “Kodachrome,” which Mark Raso (“Copenhagen”) is set to direct for the Gotham Group and Shawn Levy‘s 21 Laps Entertainment, TheWrap has learned. Jonathan Tropper (21 Laps’ “This Is where I Leave You”) wrote the script, which is based on A.G. Sulzberger’s 2010 New York Times article about a father and son who take a road trip to Kansas in order to develop photographs at Kodak’s last Kodachrome lab before it closes forever. Gotham Group’s Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Eric Robinson are producing with 21 Laps’ Levy.

levelFILM’s Copenhagen, in select theatres and on premium VOD nationwide Dec. 5 Canadian filmmaker Mark Raso bets on his audience in his terrific feature Copenhagen. It’s about an American called William (Game of Thrones Gethin Anthony) pretending to be Canadian while touring Europe. He tends to get into trouble a lot so he believes it adds another layer of fake “nice”. He is one of the most obnoxious male leads in films in a long while, a naturally abrasive, selfish and narcissistic spoiled child, who at 30, can’t reign himself in. When he meets Effy (Frederikke Dahl Hansen) someone he actually cares […]...

A flighty Peter Pan meets his grounded Wendy in Copenhagen, Mark Raso's tender romance about the sliding scale of maturity. William (Gethin Anthony) arrives in the Danish capital already frustrated: Traveling companion Jeremy (Sebastian Armesto) is more focused on pleasing girlfriend Jennifer (Olivia Grant) than accompanying his needy best friend on a tour of European bars and hostels. Left to his own devices, William begins tracking down his grandfather in hopes that it will illuminate a family history of abandonment. He finds an eager guide in Effy (Frederikke Dahl Hansen), who's as calm and perceptive as William is rash and inconsiderate. She's also half his age, a fact that escapes the self-centered 28-year-old for an inordinate amount of time. William is a familiar ...

The movie Copenhagen, winner of the 2014 Slamdance Audience Award for Best Narrative (my review), has its Texas screening debut today and Thursday at the Dallas International Film Festival (Diff).
In his feature directorial debut, Canadian writer-director Mark Raso takes viewers on a personal journey for Will (Gethin Anthony), a young man who must face himself while seeking clues about his father. He is helped in his search by the young yet mature Effie (Frederikke Dahl Hanssen) who must deal with her own challenges at home.
While at Slamdance, I had an opportunity to speak with Raso, Anthony and Hanssen about Copenhagen. Here's what they had to say about the film.

The 2014 Dallas International Film Festival (Diff) is changing it up a bit this year with the film venues and number of screenings. Although there are fewer screenings per day, it will be easier to make it to consecutive movies centralized at the Angelika rather than catching a shuttle to the Magnolia, which is not a Diff venue this year.
The film festival opens on Thursday, April 3 at the Dallas City Performance Hall, with Words and Pictures starring Juliette Binoche and Clive Owen. This narrative feature portrays the challenges faced by educators in their attempts to inspire students in art and education in a day and age full of obsessions with social media, grades and status among peers.
I am looking forward to several of the international titles that are premiering in Dallas, including my personal 2014 Slamdance Film Festival favorite and Audience Award winner Copenhagen (screening times), written and directed by Mark Raso.

The Slamdance Film Festival tends to be overshadowed and thus overlooked by its larger concurrent counterpart, which is a shame due to the quality independent programming that takes place on the two screens at Treasure Mountain Inn in Park City.
This year was no exception, with writer/director Mark Raso leading the charge with the artistic storytelling of coming of age with his Slamdance Audience award-winning narrative feature, Copenhagen.
At first glance one might think this story transcends locale, but Raso's unique twists affirm the selection of Denmark's capital for the setting. The colorful facades of the 17th-century buildings and deep canals of the Nyhavn district serve as the background of a lushly told story of young love and personal redemption for its main characters, Will (Gethin Anthony) and Effy (Frederikke Dahl Hansen).
