Though she usually takes on more of a comedic role, Kat Dennings shows her impressive range in the new preview trailer for “To Write Love on Her Arms.” The “2 Broke Girls” star joins Rupert Friend, Corbin Bleu and Chad Michael Murray in the project, a true story from director Nathan Frankowski.
Per the synopsis, “Renee Yohe is a Florida girl who struggles with addiction and abuse. I a creative blend of artistic fantasy and music conflicted with hard reality, Renee discovers the value of genuine friendships and embarks on a daunting-yet-courageous journey toward recovery.
“To Write Love on Her Arms” is due in theaters in 2015 and also features performances by Travie McCoy and Rachael Yamagata.

Singer/songwriter Ingrid Michaelson first came to prominence seven years ago after “Grey’s Anatomy” used her song “Keep Breathing,” followed by Old Navy appropriating “The Way I Am” to sell sweaters during 2007’s holiday season. But fans of those songs who delved deeper found that Michaelson had much more to offer than songs that licensed for TV placements. Her confessional, vulnerable lyrics, delivered by her crystalline vocals quickly caught on with followers of such artists as Sara Bareilles, Tori Amos, Regina Spektor, and Rachael Yamagata. Next Tuesday (April 15), Michaelson will release “Lights Out,” led by the soaring, fun first single, “Girls Chase Boys.” The song caught fire not only for its catchiness, but also for its gender-bending video, which pays homage to Robert Palmer’s “Simply Irresistible” iconic clip. Her last album, 2012's "Human Again," debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200. Michaelson appeared at the Grammy Museum earlier this...

If you have this strange urge to listen to Death Cab and read comic books today, there's a reason: 10 years ago, on Aug. 5, 2003, "The O.C." premiered on Fox.
Seminal hardly begins to describe the impact Josh Schwartz's coming-of-age series had on popular culture. The first season exploded through the zeitgeist like a comet, helping user in the age of geek rule while also turning indie rock acts like Rooney, The Killers and the aforementioned Death Cab for Cutie into required listening for emo kids of all ages.
"The first six or seven episodes was really literally stuff off of my iPod," Schwartz told HitFix writer Alan Sepinwall in a new interview. "Some of the bands that we reached out to were these indie rock bands, and that was all we could afford. Music and Muppets go hand in hand and if one song from Kermit can reduce grown men to tears then as the new Muppet movie nears our cinemas it’s time for some of the popular tracks from the Muppets’ previous movies and episodes to get the cover treatment with The Green Album.
There are some old favourites among the new tracks with Ok Go’s rendition of the Muppet Theme getting the whole shebang off to an unconventional start, proving a divisive version of the classic tune. Alkaline Trio’s Movin’ Right Along is a jaunty punk cover of the Fozzie/Kermit duet from The Muppet Movie and it demands a replay or two and will end up in your head but leave it to The Fray to cover the infamous Mahna-Mahna which is likely clamped to your subconscious already. It works as a track, though it’s not...

You got to love the Chicago based band Ok Go taking on their own veriosn of the classic Muppet theme song. If you haven’t heard it yet, now you can. The track featured below is taken from The Green Album, for which a collection of current bands covered a host of classic Muppet tunes. The disc hit stores today. Check out the full tracklisting below. Also worth noting: In the video they make an inside joke to a previous video they made featuring dogs. That video is one of my all time personal favorites, so I’ve decided to include it below. Enjoy!

When a friend of ours originally posted the tracklist for "Muppets: The Green Album" on Facebook, it was with the note "Hipsters ruin everything." Ok, actually, it was "Hipsters [bleeping] ruin everything," but you get the idea.
So we were all ready to get up in arms about it too, but then we saw the words "'Bein' Green' performed by Andrew Bird." And we were completely won over. Sublime.
And since "Rainbow Connection" has long been our choice if aliens came down and demanded we sing one song on national television or they would destroy the world, the Weezer rendition (with an assist from Paramore's Hayley Williams) got a pass where it otherwise might not have.
Not to say that they're all our ideal matches. We could live without ever hearing Ok Go's take on the "Muppet Show Theme" again but no one can ruin "Mahna Mahna," and that includes The Fray.

The wonderful trailers for Jason Segel's Muppets movie already have me torqued for a reboot of Kermit the Frog's kingdom, but now consider me extra-amped: This new disc of Muppet cover songs featuring Weezer, Ok Go, the Fray, and Rachael Yamagata is so solid and original that I can't believe an alternative version like it has never been attempted before. You can listen to the whole Green Album online now, but first, think: What are your favorite Muppet covers? And do these live up?...

Before The Muppets comes out on November 23rd, how would you like to listen to some covers of classic muppet songs? Cat’s in a strapless, blingy, sparkly dress, with her hair up and red lipstick. And, for once, even the hemline is very nice.

It seems that Disney is finally catching on to the idea that commercial success can hinge on the older demographics.
It started with Almost Alice, which featured songs from the likes of Fall Out Boy, Owl City, All Time Low and more. The album was released alongside of their Alice In Wonderland reboot and not only did it generate quite a bit of fervor over the movie itself, but it also managed to reach the #1 spot on the Billboard Rock and Alternative charts.
Disney is apparently hoping to duplicate last years success story with the release of Muppets: The Green Album. The album, which will be released 3 months prior to the The Muppets, will include a host of Muppets songs as interpreted by various mainstream and indie artists. Whereas Almost Alice seemed to be targeting the teen demographic, The Green Album‘s roster implies that this time they are instead targeting the 20-somethings.

Recently we’ve been posting the Track of the Day, showcasing some of our favourite music. If you’ve been keeping up, you now know we don’t necessarily listen to mainstream fare. The reason I bring this up is because now we have another reason to be excited for The Muppet movie. We know we can already expect some great musical numbers from Jason Segal and Flight of the Conchords star Bret McKenzie who is the music supervisor for the film. But what we didn’t know, was that a tribute album of covers would be released in honour of the film. The CD titled Muppets: The Green Album, will be arriving in stores by the end of the summer and it boasts some great choices including My Morning Jacket, Weezer, Paramore‘s Hayley Williams and Andrew Bird who gets to sing “Bein’ Green.”
The disc will hit stores August 23rd.

There's nothing like discovering a new artist -- unearthing an undiscovered gem whose impact leaves more than just memories of a catchy hook or glossy package. With Christina Perri, I feel like I've found a sparkling diamond.
I've always been drawn to female singer/songwriters who pour their hearts out with lush melodies and powerfully heartfelt lyrics. Ingrid Michaelson, Tori Amos, Rachael Yamagata and Sarah McLachlan are longtime favorites.
With her first full-length album "Lovestrong," Christina is right up there with the very best of them.

It almost seems like Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Shonda Rhimes is apologizing to the Lgbt community for (temporarily) breaking up Callie and Arizona. According to TVGuide.com Rhimes is planning to go where brilliant minds like Joss Whedon have gone before: A musical episode.
Shonday Rhimes
Rhimes says the episode — which she’s wanted to do since Season 1 of the medical drama — will be different than Whedon’s beloved “Once More, With Feeling” in that characters won’t randomly burst into song and instead will take advantage of cast members who are trained singers — like Sara Ramirez (Callie) and Chandra Wilson (Bailey) — as well as those who aren’t.
With Tony winner Ramirez among the cast, Rhimes said the episode is “definitely a Callie-heavy story” and that it’s still a story they would have told “whether there was singing or not.”

Margaret Cho gave me some of her time recently to discuss the August 24th release of her new album Cho Dependent. News Flash: Girlfriend can sing, and really really well. The thirteen songs here cut across quite a few genres; hip hop, girl group, country music, rock & roll, singer-songwriter, dance-pop. Margaret enlisted a stellar group of compadres to help write and perform the tunes -- Ben Lee, Tommy Chong, Tegan & Sara, Grant Lee Phillips, Ani Difranco, Andrew Bird, Fiona Apple, Brendan Benson, Garrison Star, Patty Griffin, Jon Brion, Meghan Toohey, Diana Yanez and Kurt Hall. Rachael Yamagata also appears on a hidden Easter Egg track. Cho had been wanting to do something like this for a long time. Every once in a while, our American cousins create a comedy series so original, so refreshing, that it makes you sit back and wonder how such an intelligent country could also be the home of Hillbillies and George W. The Dear John soundtrack. Imagine, if you will, that musical quality is a beachside stretch of highway, bathed in California sun, with a big white line straight down the middle. One side of the road is the side of good tunes, and the other is the side of gloopy monotonous bilge. The Dear John soundtrack swerves from one side to the other and back like an outtake from Death Proof.
Dear John is adapted from a novel by the author of The Notebook and directed by Lasse Hallstrom, whose previous work includes Chocolat and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (his earlier Danish film My Life As A Dog is probably his best work), and it’s an old fashioned weepy romance from the Mills-and-Boon-with-pretentions end of the scale, so it’s no surprise that the soundtrack consists of ten sentimental love songs. What is surprising is just how alternately terrible/quite good the songs are.

Katharine McPhee is best known for being the wide-eyed brunette beauty who came in second during the fifth season of "American Idol" to Taylor Hicks. Since then, she's released her self-titled debut, earned a gold single with "Over It," became the latest fresh face of Neutrogena, and scored roles in movies and TV shows like "The House Bunny" and "Ugly Betty." But now she's shed her long brown locks and the R&B sounds of her debut for "Unbroken," a hook-laden mix of acoustic-leaning pop songs where McPhee got to pen songs with singer/songwriters like Paula Cole, Ingrid Michaelson, and Rachael Yamagata. The first single, "Had It All," is currently climbing up radio. Cns got a chance to talk with Katharine about her new album, new look, and her upcoming new movie.

It's a little surprising that until now, no one has put together the definitive tribute album to folk's fertile days in New York's Greenwich Village. 429 Records' new collection titled The Village--a Celebration Of The Music Of Greenwich Village spotlights the historical significance of the neighborhood's folk music scene with passionate contributions by thirteen artists including Rickie Lee Jones, Los Lobos, Bruce Hornsby, Amos Lee, Shelby Lynne, Cowboy Junkies, John Oates, Lucinda Williams, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Rachael Yamagata, and others. In her glowing liner notes, Suze Rotolo (featured on The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan album cover) accurately states, "The songs on The Village aren't confined to any particular era any more than the musicians performing them are...every tune is something transformed from something I knew into something I didn't." The music of Tim Buckley, Judy Collins, Joan Baez, Fred Neil, John...

No, the “Kidney Now!” benefit on last night’s “30 Rock” finale wasn’t the first time celebrities have come together to raise awareness or money for a cause. Nor was it the first time “We Are the World” has been parodied. But I’d rank it among my favorite charity-song spoofs, right up there with Jimmy Kimmel’s “I’m F—ing Ben Affleck.”
In case you missed it, the episode featured Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) pulling in as many favors and blackmail victims as he could to create a benefit show aimed at getting someone to give a kidney to the man who may or may not be his father (Alan Alda). This led to the revelations that Clay Aiken is Kenneth’s cousin, Liz Lemon went to school with Sheryl Crow, Elvis Costello is really an international art thief, Adam Levine can do a really hilarious Russian accent,...

Learning that Clay Aiken is the cousin of NBC's most cheerful employee, Kenneth Parcell (Jack McBrayer), was almost as shocking as seeing the rest of the star-studded crowd Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) could coerce into participating in his "Kidney Now!" benefit concert on the season finale of "30 Rock."
In the episode, Aiken and a slew of famous faces, like Mary J. Blige, Sheryl Crow, Elvis Costello and Cyndi Lauper, joined in Jack's effort to find a kidney donor for Milton Greene (Alan Alda), the man who may or may not be his father. Aiken says it was an honor to be involved.
" '30 Rock' is not only the funniest show on TV now; it's also the smartest," Aiken told MTV News in a statement.

Maybe she has her political animals mixed up but this sultry singer-songwriter knows when Elephants are in the room.
The player Don’t let Rachael Yamagata fool you. She may sing and write intimate, complex, moody songs that explore the soul, but she’s still a girl who wants to have fun. Really. With her husky voice (think a hoarse Scarlett Johansson), hearty laugh and adventurous spirit, she’s willing to play along with almost anything, even...

From the outside, it might seem like Rachael Yamagata has developed a split personality since the release of her debut record. The smoky-voiced, raven-haired singer/songwriter's much-delayed sophomore release, Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart, is a 14 track double album (featuring a hidden song). The first disk is composed of atmospheric, elegiac and emotionally naked tales of lovelorn relationships. The second disk is louder and livelier, brimming with hot-boiled angst so much so the album has been slapped with a parental advisory sticker.
