The European Film Market (EFM) is hosting a day-long event on diversity, equity and inclusion on Feb. 16, bringing together a host of industry stakeholders in an effort to set the agenda for better representation — both on and off screen — in Europe’s film and television industries.
The Equity and Inclusion Pathways Seminar will bring together roughly 100 industry professionals from 21 countries, representing both their respective media industries as well as regional and pan-European organizations and advocacy groups working toward greater diversity and inclusion.
By bringing European decision-makers and advocacy bodies together at the same table, the organizers hope to introduce “sustainable, lasting change” to Europe’s screen industries by “bring[ing] about better policy-making, measures and initiatives regarding inclusion, equity and accessibility,” according to Faysal Omer, head of EFM Producers.

Nico Santos, from “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Superstore,” will star in Marvel Studios’ “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” in an unspecified role.
Stantos joins an already sprawling ensemble, including the returning cast Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Sylvester Stallone and Elizabeth Debicki, as well as new stars Will Poulter, Chukwudi Iwuji, Maria Bakalova and Daniela Melchior.
Writer-director James Gunn recently wrapped production on the film, which is currently scheduled to debut on May 5, 2023. It will conclude the “Guardians” trilogy, which Gunn launched in 2014 to great skepticism given the characters’ obscure provenance within the Marvel comics canon. It went on to gross 773.4 million globally and the 2017 sequel earned 863.8 million worldwide.
Santos has also performed in a voiceover role on HBO Max’s animated royals comedy “The Prince,” and recently wrapped the Netflix film “Happiness for Beginners” with Ellie Kemper.

As New York’s Tribeca Film Festival ceded its traditional springtime slot for a decidedly more summery one this June, it will coincide with Pride month — when just about everything in New York gets a little more gay. With queer audiences excited to be together again and looking for events to feel proud of, the festival’s new time could be just the thing to kick off the celebratory month. Between TV pilots and in-person talks from beloved gay comedians John Early and Tig Notaro and the premieres of independent queer films from around the world, Tribeca’s robust slate of LGBTQ programming has something for every cultural palate.
“When I joined the team, it was [with] the intention of making sure the festival made space for queer representation, and making sure that their stories were not limited to queer bubbles, that they were being appreciated my mainstream audiences as well,...

To honor the legacy of beloved filmmaker Lynn Shelton, Seattle’s Northwest Film Forum and Duplass Brothers Productions have today announced the launch of the Lynn Shelton “Of a Certain Age” Grant. The $25,000 unrestricted cash grant will be awarded each year to a U.S.-based woman or non-binary filmmaker, age 39 or older, who has yet to direct a narrative feature.
Shelton, who passed away in May, was among the leading voices of American independent film, working on all sides of the camera on such films as “Humpday,” “Your Sister’s Sister,” “Outside In,” and “Sword of Trust.” Like the filmmakers the grant is intended to help, Shelton didn’t direct her own first feature (“We Go Way Back”) until she was 39. In the 15 years that followed, Shelton built a prolific and respected canon of both feature and television work.

A grant fund has been set up in honor of the late “Humpday” filmmaker Lynn Shelton that will provide a $25,000 unrestricted cash grant to U.S. based women and nonbinary filmmakers, age 39 or older, who have yet to direct a narrative feature.
The “Of a Certain Age” grant was established by Seattle’s Northwest Film Forum alongside Duplass Brothers Productions, and the prize will be awarded each year.
“This grant seeks to reinforce that great filmmakers can emerge at any age, and to elevate the voices of a segment of the filmmaking community who have precious few resources dedicated to supporting them yet plenty of stories to tell,” Megan Griffiths, Shelton’s longtime friend and collaborator who is working in her capacity as a member of the board of Northwest Film Forum to help establish the grant, said in a statement. “Lynn was 39 when I met her on her first feature,...

Barry Jenkins’ “Moonlight” is garnering awards buzz and praise from the industry’s most respected critics, but if that film came out 10 years ago, the gay coming-of-age story could have counted on a more specific foundation: The Lgbt film festival circuit. San Francisco’s Frameline, Los Angeles’ Outfest, and New York’s NewFest were once the go-to market for queer filmmakers and films, but once they break out, many directors with enough clout can easily graduate to a bigger arena.
Lgbt filmmakers rarely face the stigma that once limited opportunities, but for the emerging and mid-career filmmaker, as well as foreign filmmakers looking to break into international markets, queer film festivals remain a vital opportunity to get their work in front of an often adoring audience. At a time when gay identity has yet to truly permeate Hollywood filmmaking, that support system is more vital than ever.

It had been 25 days since the Pulse shooting in Orlando, but the effects of the attack on the nightclub reverberated on the nation’s opposite coast at the beginning of the 34th Outfest Los Angeles Lgbt Festival.
Speaking from the stage at the downtown Orpheum Theatre, Opening Night Gala speaker Wilson Cruz noted that the festival’s general atmosphere is markedly different than the one surrounding 2015’s celebration. “Just this time last year,” Cruz said, “we were celebrating marriage equality across this country. Just short of one year later, we would come together again, but this time for the communal experience of grief and mourning.”
Outfest Executive Director Christopher Racster also echoed the sentiment that the evening’s gathering was a tribute to the Lgbt community’s resilient spirit. “Although we still face tough challenges, let’s not forget that love is, and always will be, stronger than hate. Thank...

The origin of this project goes as far back in our women's collective memory to the time in the late 80s when Janet Grillo was head of Acquisitions for New Line Cinema and Sara Risher was head of production. I was buying features for Lorimar or Republic Pictures. We did not know at that time that one day, after Janet had completed her directorial debut, the lovely and loving film "Fly Away," that Sara would tell a certain writer-producer. to show her script to Janet as a possible director.
Janet liked it and together they developed it further at L.A. Film Independent. They then won the PGA Script Award. They hired an 18-year-old who had been a child actress and was a Nyu Freshman just finishing a TV Career. She agreed to star in January and the film was shot the following May 2014.
It premiered in Geena Davis’ Inaugural 2015 Bentonville Film Festival in May 2015 where it won the Jury Geena Davis’ new effort to celebrate the work of women and diverse voices in media also is the only festival to guarantee distribution for its winners’ project.
“The goal of the festival is not just to showcase women and diversity—it’s to really have a proactive and powerful effect on the industry,” says Davis, Bff co-founder and founder and chair of the nonprofit Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media. “We’re intent on being extremely proactive in showing the films that include women and that are very commercial. Our goal is to show that this is the direction in which things are heading and we should get there sooner.”
"Jack of the Red Hearts” has now arrived in theaters nationwide as of February 26, 2016. "Jack of the Red Hearts”. On its opening night, Thursday, February 25, Geena Davis, Famke Janssen, Phyllis Nagy (writer, “Carol”), Catherine Hardwicke (director, “Twilight ”) and Danielle Carrig (Svp Lifetime) joined "Jack of the Red Hearts” director Janet Grillo, producer Lucy Mukerjee-Brown and writer Jennifer Deaton for a special screening of the film and Q&A at the YouTube Space in L.A. In conjunction with Broad Focus, Lifetime, the Genna Davis Institute on Gender in Media and the Bentonville Film Festival, the Q&A, moderated by the Wrap’s Sharon Waxman, will begin immediately followed the 7pm screening.
It will play on Lifetime April 20 which is Autism Awareness Month. It will show again at Bentonville Film Festival’s second edition May 3 - 8 of this year.
Bentonville’s strong affiliation with Walmart, the only vendor and the largest still selling DVDs will release it in its stores and on its VOD site.
Anna Sophia Robb portrays “Jack,” a tough teenage runaway on the lam from her parole officer. The conniving street kid brazenly impersonates a trained caregiver and forms a unique bond with an 11 year-old autistic girl named Glory, brilliantly played by newcomer Taylor Richardson. Famke Janssen, as the child's desperate mother Kay, also bonds with the imposter, as a surrogate daughter she can actually talk to. And the girl’s cute older brother Robert (Israel Broussard) falls in love. When the deception is exposed and the cops descend, loving father Mark (Scott Cohen) struggles to hold his family together as the pieces of this puzzle are reshuffled into a new, satisfying whole.
"Jack of the Red Hearts” is directed by Janet Grillo (writer/director of “Fly Away” and executive producer of Emmy®-winning “Autism: The Musical”) and written by Jennifer Deaton. The producers are Stefan Nowicki, Joey Carey, Lucy Mukerjee-Brown, and Morgan White.
The film stars AnnaSophia Robb (“The Carrie Diaries,” “Soul Surfer”), Famke Janssen (“X-Men”), Scott Cohen (“One Life to Live”), Taylor Richardson (“Annie”), Israel Broussard (“The Bling Ring”) and John D’Leo (“Unbroken”).

The After Dark Originals news continues! We recently caught up with the lovely Rachel Miner to chat about her role as the no-nonsense Sergeant Hannah in Jason Connery’s alien thriller 51. Here’s what the horror and After Dark veteran had to say!
“I really enjoyed Sergeant Hannah because she was a very strong woman which was a lot of fun to play,” says the actress. “[Hannah’s] integrity and strength was great – and I got to order men around, which was a lot of fun! It was an intense, very quick shoot but I had a lot of fun with good people. As I said, I really loved the role and liked getting to wear the uniform…” Having spoken with actors portraying military previously, this writer understands the power of putting on a uniform. “It’s absolutely true – there’s definitely something to that. I think regardless of your feelings any given war,...

Here ends, I suppose, the series of cryptic emails I have exchanged with director Patrik Syversen in which he has spent a bout a year telling me that he's working on something while declining to elaborate further. Heh.
Syversen should really need no introduction around these parts. As the director of Rovdyr - Manhunt in English speaking markets - Syversen has been at the forefront of the wave of genre film currently emerging from the Nordic countries. And though Rovdyr showed a few growing pains it also clearly showed that Syversen was ready for bigger things, a lesson clearly not lost on the folks behind the After Dark Films, who tapped the director to helm one of their initial slate of original productions. Here are the details, and check a pair of stills below!
