Flume and Caroline Polachek have shared an evocative music video for their recent collaboration, “Sirens.” The video, directed by Daniel Askill, sees Polachek floating in a cave in an ethereal white gown above a seemingly lifeless Flume.
“Sirens” was co-written and produced by Danny L. Harle and will appear on Flume’s forthcoming LP, Palaces, out May 20 via Future Classic and Transgressive.
“Caroline and I had known each other for years, but she’d just moved to L.A. and we bumped into each other living down the street,” Flume explained in a statement.

As a performer, Sia has long been known for her dazzling visuals — from the fantastical wigs she wears to her sublime music videos — ideas she comes up with both in her waking hours watching television and in her dreams. One of those visions, Sia’s first movie, “Music,” was 15 years in the making. Looking to be released in 2021, her directorial debut will be brought to the American Film Market.
Speaking at Variety’s Power of Women event in October, the Grammy-nominated artist said the tale of Music, a teenager with special abilities — specifically nonvocal autism — started as a short story. “Over the years, I had this fantasy of making it,” said Sia, adding that she didn’t have the confidence to helm a movie.
While Sia had dabbled in directing — she was a co-director on her 2014 hit music video “Chandelier” alongside Daniel Askill — but her uncertainty nagged as she questioned,...

Lily Sullivan in ‘I Met a Girl.’
Gravitas Ventures will launch Luke Eve’s romantic drama I Met a Girl in the US as a Premium VOD release on September 11, followed a month later by VOD on a dozen digital platforms.
The original plan was a cinema release for the film starring Brenton Thwaites, Lily Sullivan, Joel Jackson, Peter Rowsthorn and Zahra Newman.
But in light of widespread cinema closures, producer Adam Dolman tells If: “Gravitas wanted to release the film as soon as possible to take advantage of the growth in the VOD business.”
Scripted by Adam’s brother Glen Dolman (Bloom), the plot follows Thwaites’ Devon, a 20-something aspiring musician with schizophrenia, who relies on his older brother Nick (Jackson) to get by. On a downward spiral, Devon is saved by Sullivan’s Lucy – a mysterious girl who is just as impulsive and romantic as he is.

Once upon a time, back in the network’s golden years, MTV would assemble all the stars in the top-40 galaxy for an annual celebration of the very best in music videos. They called it the Video Music Awards — the VMAs, for short. They still do, believe it or not, but the VMAs have come to serve a very different purpose in an age when MTV and C-span air roughly the same number of music videos.
These days, it would be fair to say that the VMAs exist less to celebrate music videos than they do to celebrate MTV itself, to reaffirm the network’s place in the zeitgeist. As a pop spectacle, the VMAs are right up there with the Super Bowl halftime concert. As an awards show, they’re a complete farce (to this day, nobody actually knows how the nominees are selected, and few people even bother...

Sia is still capitalizing on the success of her single “Cheap Thrills,” but that isn’t stopping her from releasing an entirely new song seemingly out of nowhere. Similarly to how “Cheap Thrills” featured Sean Paul in a guest role, the new track, aptly-titled “The Greatest,” features a verse by rapper Kendrick Lamar.
“The Greatest,” while a brand new song, sounds like it could have very well been written during the sessions of Sia’s latest album, This Is Acting, but that isn’t a bad thing. The song itself continues the theme of This Is Acting, which is high intensity, high quality pop, and even if it doesn’t do anything inventive, it matches the consistency of her recent music.
For “The Greatest,” simplicity is its strongest suit: its repetitive chorus makes for great radio fodder with an electronic beat that has the track begging to be remixed, and...

In a moving video for "The Greatest," released on Monday, the 40-year-old singer once again teamed up with Dance Moms (and People Ones to Watch) alum Maddie Ziegler, who has starred in the Aussie pop star's clips for "Chandelier," "Elastic Heart," "Big Girls Cry" and most recently "Cheap Thrills." If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? That's exactly why Sia decided to team up with Dance Moms' Maddie Ziegler for her dramatic "Big Girls Cry" music video. The child star donned the same nude leotard and blond bob wig as her previous performances for "Chandelier" and "Elastic Heart," except this time, the focus was more on her face than her full-body dance moves. The simple-yet-bizarre clip films Ziegler up close, against a black backdrop, dancing to Ryan Heffington-choreography all throughout the slowed-down track. The music video is once again directed by Sia and Daniel Askill, marking the third time the duo has teamed up for the Grammy winner's...

For all the public provocation Shia Labeouf did in 2014, the new year brought with it a nice surprise from the 28-year-old Fury actor. And what a difference a year makes. Want to know what it feels like to have a manic episode? Watch Sia’s new spellbinding video for “Chandelier.” The video, shot in a grungy, largely empty run-down apartment with strange drawings — the kind we’re used to seeing perps live in in episodes of “Law & Order”— features 11-year old Maddie Ziegler (from "Dance Moms"), dressed in a nude leotard and a blonde page boy wig, who is meant to be a young Sia. As the song and the lyrics about wanting to hang from the chandelier and not being able to wait until the night unspool, the young girl dances throughout the apartment in a manic modern movements that are both extraordinary and disturbing. She stops to pantomime to eat, with a dead-eyed stare, and then continues her kinetic motions throughout the apartment. Shot largely without edits, there are single shots that follow the girl into different rooms.

Lionsgate has hired Aron Eli Coleite (Drew Barrymore's The End) to write a big screen adaptation of the sci-fi short story When First We Were Gods by Rick Yancey. The studio has also brought in music video and commercial director Daniel Askill to develop it. He's worked on commercials for Cadillac, Xbox and Sony.
According to Deadline, in the story, "humanity has achieved immortality, but it is only available to an extraordinarily wealthy elite. While it is very common for people in the elite to marry and divorce, a man conspires to murder his immortal wife so that his mortal mistress can take her place — thus her immortality. Along the way comes the realization that mortality may well render the experience of love impossible."

Lionsgate is adapting When First We Were Gods, a sci-fi film based on a Rick Yancey short story. The studio has already lined up music video and commercial director Daniel Askill to helm the project, and Aron Eli Coleite to adapt the story.
When First We Were Gods tells an interesting story about a time when humanity has achieved immortality. But eternal life is only available to the elite. The story then revolves around a man who conspires to murder his immortal wife so that his mortal (most likely poor) mistress can take her place and immortality.
Coleite’s credits include The End, which actress and director Drew Barrymore is set to helm for Warner Bros, and the TNT pilot Trooper, which stars Mira Sorvino. Askill previously directed a short film titled We Have To Decide Not To Die, which played at various festivals including SXSW. The film was well...

Immortality is apparently not all it’s cracked up to be, especially in Lionsgate’s new sci-fi flick “When First We Were Gods”, which has now found itself a writer and director. “When First We Were Gods” will be adapted by Aron Eli Coleite from the short story by Rick Yancey, with commercial director Daniel Askill set to make his feature-film directorial debut on the property for Lionsgate. So what’s it all about? In the short story, humanity has achieved immortality, but it is only available to an extraordinarily wealthy elite. While it is very common for people in the elite to marry and divorce, a man conspires to murder his immortal wife so that his mortal mistress can take her place — thus her immortality. Along the way comes the realization that mortality may well render the experience of love impossible. They should call it, “Just Like That Movie In Time with Justin Timberlake,...

Though it may seem unfair at first, let's pick up Joe Swanberg's "Hannah Takes the Stairs," heft it in our grips for a moment, and then use it to beat this thing called "mumblecore" to a pulp. Implicitly a kind of low-budge, ultra-spontaneous, all-hdv answer to the glossy fatuousness of current American film, mumblecore has a number of inherent problems (the least of which is its inherited moniker; using "-core" as a suffix in this way has no meaning). The fad's general strategy . naturally lit shaky-cam coverage of semi-inarticulate twentysomethings with bedhead speaking entirely in casual small talk and having or ruining relationships . is easy to peg as narcissistic and lazy, if you're not finely attuned to the genre's nonchalant sense of cool. But more than that, mumblecore movies strive for an interpersonal intimacy they never achieve, because intimacy requires skill, real acting and visual wisdom,...
