Plot: A gay amateur wrestler in El Paso reinvents himself as an “exotico” wrestler named Cassandro and becomes an unlikely star.
Review: Cassandro is based on an unlikely but very cool true story. Gael Garcia Bernal plays Saúl Armendáriz, a struggling amateur luchador who reinvented himself as a flamboyant wrestler named Cassandro. He was an “exotico”, which was a stereotypically gay class of wrestler that was typically demolished to the delight of homophobic audiences. But, Cassandro was different. His winning personality and physical prowess won over his audiences, and he became something that was almost unheard of in Mexico, an exotico who won matches.
It’s an excellent role for Bernal, who gets a juicy role he can sink his teeth into. The character allows him to show his flair for comedy, his psychical prowess in the well-choreographed wrestling scenes, and heartfelt poignancy at times too. Much of the movie...

One of the more wonderful surprises out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival was Cassandro, director Roger Ross Williams’ tender and poignant portrait of Saúl Armendáriz (Gael García Bernal), a gay lucha libre wrestler from El Paso (who spent much of his youth across the border in Juárez) who rose to fame as a so-called exótico — a male wrestler in drag.
After trying to take his own life, Armendáriz overcame his demons and became the first exótico to win a Universal Wrestling Association (Uwa) championship, opening a number of wrestling-world minds in the process.

Last year, somewhat surprisingly, Sony announced plans to make a ‘Spider-Man’ spinoff film focused on the unknown villain, El Muerto. This was shocking for a number of reasons. Mostly, even the diehard Marvel Comics fans were scratching their heads wondering who El Muerto is. But also, the film was expected to star Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio aka Bad Bunny, a pop star who has only recently dabbled in acting.

Ring the bell and make the count because Bad Bunny is tapping out of Sony and Marvel’s El Muerto, a superhero project the studio recently stripped from its calendar of upcoming releases. Sony Pictures removed El Muerto from its forthcoming slate in June. The Jonas Cuarón-directed Spider-Man spinoff would have served as the first time to feature a Latino character in the lead.
Speaking with Vanity Fair, Bad Bunny and his publicist Sujeylee Solá said plans to star in El Muerto look grim. Bunny, whose real name is Benito Martínez Ocasio, fell silent when asked about the film’s removal from Sony’s schedule. After a prolonged silence, Solá said, “Next question.” Martínez added, “I don’t know what to say,” saying the issue is “delicate.” Solá quickly pinned the conversation by saying, “Obviously, it’s out,” referring to Martínez’s involvement with the spinoff.

Composer Benjamin Wallfisch is staying in the comic book space. Wallfisch will compose the score to Kraven the Hunter, the Sony and Columbia feature starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the Marvel antihero.
Wallfisch is a veteran of the comic book genre, with his recent score for The Flash being heard in theaters now. He also is behind the scores for 2019’s Shazam! and Hellboy. Outside of the comic book realm, Wallfisch scored The Flash director Andy Muschietti’s two It films, released in 2017 and 2019, as well as Ron Howard’s Thirteen Lives (2022), Mortal Kombat (2021), The Invisible Man (2020) and Blade Runner 2049 (2017), which he worked on with Hans Zimmer.
Kraven the Hunter hails from director J. C. Chandor and is due out in theaters on Oct. 6. Its cast includes Ariana DeBose, Fred Hechinger, Alessandro Nivola, Christopher Abbott and Russell Crowe. Kraven is based on the comic book character, a big-game hunter who goes after Spider-Man.

Bad Bunny's superhero turn has been delayed. Back in April 2022, Sony announced that the rapper, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, had been cast in the lead role in Marvel's upcoming film "El Muerto." The movie was originally set to hit theaters in January 2024 and will mark the first time a Latinx actor will headline their own live-action Marvel film.
However, on June 22 Deadline reported that Sony had pulled the film from its release date schedule. That doesn't mean it's not coming eventually, though. The outlet said Bad Bunny's tour schedule and the WGA strike was the cause of the release delay. Popsugar reached out to Sony for confirmation but did not immediately receive a response.

Even as Sony looks to the likes of Kraven The Hunter as the future of its Spider-Man-based spin-off universe, it is having to pump the brakes on others. The studio has announced it is taking the Bad Bunny-starring El Muerto off its release schedule.
The reason? Chalk up another film impacted by the ongoing writers' strike, plus complications from its musician star's touring schedule.
El Muerto debuted in a 2006 issue of Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, written by Peter David, and illustrated by Roger Cruz. The character, real name Juan Carlos, was a super powered wrestler who originally fought Spider-Man in a charity wrestling where he nearly unmasked the hero before being stung by Spider-Man, with a paralyzing poison. After being saved from the hospital by the web-spinner when Muerto’s oppressor El Dorado came to claim the wrestler’s life, the two would team up to defeat Dorado.

We had learned back in April of last year that music superstar Bad Bunny would be starring as Marvel Comics character El Muerto in a solo movie for Sony, a role that was hand-picked by Bad Bunny himself. THR brings us an update on the project this afternoon, revealing that Sony has now removed the planned upcoming movie from its current release schedule.
THR reports, “The feature project, which had Jonás Cuarón, the son of filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, in the director’s chair, was slated for a Jan. 12, 2024 release date but Sony announced Wednesday that it had taken the title off its release schedule.”
Cited in the report, Bad Bunny’s touring schedule and the ongoing WGA Strike are likely the main reasons why Sony has put a stop to El Muerto pre-production at this time.
The site also notes that professional wrestler Mercedes Varnado (aka Sasha Banks) was being eyed for a role,...

Sony has removed “El Muerto,” a Marvel movie about a luchador supervillain starring Bad Bunny, from its theatrical-release calendar. The “Spider-Man” baddie’s standalone film was previously scheduled for January 12, 2024; now, per Sony, it’s “Tbd.”
An individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire that “El Muerto” is still in development, but with the writers strike ongoing and the musician’s tour dates, rescheduling the release is complicated. “El Muerto” isn’t the first superhero movie to be impacted by the WGA strike, but there are enough challenges here to wonder if “El Muerto” will be re-slotted, or if it’s down for the count.
This morning, Sony emailed press with three updates to its domestic release calendar:
Seth Rogen’s “Dumb Money” has been moved up from October 20, 2023 to September 22, 2023. “The Book of Clarence” is being pushed back from that September 22 date to January 12, 2024. The “El Muerto” release date is now considered “Tbd.

Sony is placing Bad Bunny’s Marvel film, El Muerto, in a headlock. The studio is pulling the Spider-Man Universe movie from its release schedule, painting a grim picture of what is supposed to be the first live-action Marvel film led by a Latino character. According to Deadline, El Muerto is still in development, but Bad Bunny’s tour schedule and the ongoing WGA strike make scheduling a nightmare. El Muerto was supposed to enter the cinematic ring in theaters on January 12, 2024.
Marvel hired Jonas Cuarón to direct El Muerto, with Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer writing the script. Jonás Cuarón is the son of filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, whose 2018 film Roma won Best Directing, Best International Feature, and Best Cinematography prizes at the Academy Awards.

Well, it seems Spider-Man might have one less foe to worry about.
“El Muerto,” part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (as it is now known) and starring international music sensation Bad Bunny as a somewhat obscure character, has been removed from the studio’s upcoming release calendar. The movie, which is scheduled to be directed by Jonás Cuarón, was originally scheduled to be released on Jan. 12, 2024.

The project has been in development since last year, when Sony brass was impressed with his performance in Brad Pitt’s “Bullet Train.” Quickly they looked for a starring vehicle for the Puerto Rican superstar and came upon El Muerto — a character known as Juan-Carlos Estrada Sanchez, who serves as a luchador and has a special mask that grants him superpowers.

El Muerto, the Spider-Man spinoff starring Bad Bunny, is well, muerto. At least for the time being.
The feature project, which had Jonás Cuarón, the son of filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, in the director’s chair, was slated for a Jan. 12, 2024, release date, but Sony announced Wednesday that it had taken the title off its release schedule.
Muerto was to have been the first live-action Marvel project to star a Latino character. El Muerto is an antihero and the son of a luchador, or Mexican wrestler.
The project had not even started shooting, so making that date would have been either a race or a non-starter. Sources say the project fell victim to the ongoing writers strike; the script needed additional work as of mid-spring, but services could not be rendered in time.
The feature was also not yet cast but sources say that the studio was making choices and had...

Updated with more details: Sony Pictures said Wednesday that it has removed from its release date schedule El Muerto, the Bad Bunny-starring Spider-Man spinoff movie being directed by Jonas Cuarón. The Columbia Pictures film is set to be the first time a Latino character leads a Marvel live-action film.
Sony and Marvel set Cuarón to direct El Muerto in October. At the time it was in early development, with Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer writing the script about El Muerto, a character within Spider-Man’s universe. In Marvel lore, he is an antihero and the son of a luchador next in line to inherit the ancestral power of “El Muerto.”
We’re hearing that the film remains in development, but that between Bad Bunny’s tour schedule and the ongoing WGA strike it makes finalizing a date complicated.

Bad Bunny, aka El Conejo Malo, took to the 2023 Grammys stage on Sunday night, where his Un Verano Sin Ti made history as the first Latin album to be nominated for album of the year. The release was 2022’s most-listened-to album.
The artist opened the show with a Un Verano Sin Ti mashup of tracks “El Apagon” and “Despues de la Playa,” with a brass section and conga drummers. The musician danced through the tables on the floor, before making his way to a circular, lit stage in at the front of the room.
The artist, whose full name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, has taken home two Grammys in the past: one for best música urbana album for El Último Tour Del Mundo and his first one for best Latin pop or urban album for Yhlqmdlg.
