A trailer has been released for the wonderfully cute and touching sci-fi indie film called Robot and Frank. The movie was directed by Jake Schreier, and has an amazing cast of actors that includes Frank Langella, Susan Sarandon, James Marsden, Liv Tyler, Peter Sarsgaard, Jeremy Sisto and Jeremy Strong.
The story takes place in the near future, and follows a character named Frank who is old, lives alone, and can't remember a lot of things. His son gets tired of coming up all of the time to check on his dad and taking care of him. So instead of putting him in an old folks home, he buys him a robot to take care of him. Frank doesn't like the idea of being taken care of by a robot at first, but it eventually grows on him, and the two form a bond. Frank teams up with the robot to...

Sundance is wrapping up once again this year and as with every year, quite a few films are generating quite the buzz. Among them is The House I Live In, The Law in These Parts and Violeta Went to Heaven who all earned Jury Prizes. The Sundance awards (while I rarely agree with the choices) are always interesting to follow each year, since the winners are sometimes entirely unexpected. This year there’s no surprise that the most talked about film – Benh Zeitlin’s Beasts of the Southern Wild, took home the top prize.
Here is the full list of winners from the press release, including the five Audience Award winners.

The 2012 Sundance Film Festival has come to an end, and the winners of the Jury, Audience, and Next <=> awards have been announced. There was a great selection of films this year at the festival, and I've seen more good than bad. I'm ultimately happy with the outcome. Beasts of the Southern Wild was this year's most buzzed about film and took home the top Grand Jury Prize. I didn't like it as much as everyone else, but it was still good, and it won. I think it was just way too over hyped for what I ended up seeing. Maybe I would have liked it more had I gone in with no expectations.
Here's the full breakdown of winners:

Fox Searchlight was the big winner at the Sundance Film Festival 2012, as two of their acquired titles won top awards. It is no surprise that Benh Zeitlin‘s Beast of the Southern Wild (our review here) picked up the grand jury dramatic prize, as it was the most-buzzed of the fest. The Surrogate, starring John Hawkes, won the dramatic audience award and one can read our review of that drama here. It was great to see other fest favorites like Mike Birbiglia‘s Sleepwalk With Me and The Queen of Versailles among other winners. Check them all out below and see our full coverage here.

Robot and Frank was an unexpectedly fun and charming sci-fi heist movie starring Frank Langella, Susan Sarandon, James Marsden, Liv Tyler, and Peter Saarsgard. The story takes place in the near future, and follows a character named Frank who is old, lives alone, and can't remember a lot of things. His son gets tired of coming up all of the time to check on his dad and taking care of him. So instead of putting him in a old people home, he buys him a robot to take care of him. Frank doesn't like the idea of being taken care of a robot at first, but it eventually grows on him, and the two form a bond. Frank teams up with the robot to start reliving his old days as a burglar, and starts pulling off heists in the town he lives in, which sparks a fire within Frank, as well as an investigation.

Breaking: Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions and Samuel Goldwyn bought the Sundance film Robot & Frank. I’m told they paid north of $2 million for North America, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. Frank Langella, Susan Sarandon, James Marsden, Liv Tyler, Peter Saarsgard, Jeremy Sisto and Jeremy Strong star. Langella plays a retired thief in the near future who gets a robot, which enables him to woo a local librarian and get back to thieving. Jake Schreier directed and Christopher Ford wrote the script.

A futuristic buddy film focused on the relationship between an elderly ex-jewel thief and his caretaker robot, Robot & Frank’s premise might sound high-concept, silly even. But director Jake Chrier ‘s focus is on keeping the action emotionally grounded. Anchored by the dexterous, empathetic, and ever-dependable Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon, Superman Returns) as well as a strong ensemble that includes Susan Sarandon, James Marsden, and Liv Tyler, director Schreir’s feature debut is a small-scale character piece with some very large ambitions.
Filmmaker: Robot & Frank started out as a short film in 2003, so the feature version has obviously been gestating for quite awhile. How did the project develop and what changed over the years?
Schreir: Robot & Frank was a short film that Christopher Ford wrote and directed when we were at Nyu. I helped produce it for him. A few years ago, when he and I were trying to think...

Just about every film at Sundance is a world premiere. So why is there a "Premieres" section, and how is it different than the Competition or the Spotlight or the New Frontiers or the Next or...okay, I think that's all of them. Sundance describes Premieres as "a showcase of some of the most highly anticipated dramatic films of the coming year from new and established directors" and Documentary Premieres as "about big subjects or by master filmmakers that showcase the power of the form."
Basically, what it really means is here's where you find the attention-grabbers at Sundance. These are the big honking movies, the movies featuring Hollywood directors and talent coming down from their Valhalla of craft services and video village to get their hands dirty with the independents. These are the movies that have the biggest red carpets and the majority of the press coverage (see this post).

The Sundance Film Festival (apart from Venice) remains the only major film festival that we have not yet had a chance to fully cover. Hopefully 2012 will change that situation. It is one of our goals for next year and so you should be seeing a lot of Sundance posts for the next two or so months.

There has been a flurry of activity in the casting department for the cleverly titled independent drama Robot and Frank, which Jake Schreier will direct from an original screenplay by Christopher Ford. Earlier in the week, Variety reported that Liev Schreiber, Jeremy Strong and Liv Tyler had been cast in a picture that already had lured two heavy hitters in Frank Langella and Susan Sarandon. Next, the trade added that James Marsden has agreed to join the ensemble, and would be playing the role of one of Langella.s sons. (Unfortunately, unlike in Richard Kelly's The Box, it.s unlikely Langella will once again present Marsden.s character with a box, a button, and a life-changing offer.) We.re still trying to piece together exactly what Schreier.s film is all about, though, because the trade magazine.s accounts are wildly different. Variety initially suggested that the story would...

Regardless of what you might think about Eli Roth as a director or an actor, you have to admit, he generally seems like a pretty cool, down-to-earth guy. He's basically just a movie fan who lucked out with his first feature film, Cabin Fever, and managed to secure a reputation in the industry. From there he has been using his fame to help other filmmakers out ever since, for example as a producer on Daniel Stamm's The Last Exorcism, and now he is teaming up with a couple of filmmakers who made a fake trailer with Roth's name on it and put it on YouTube. Aspiring directors, take note: this is apparently a good way to get noticed in Hollywood! After seeing the trailer for a fictional horror film called Clown, about a father who dons a costume for his son's birthday party, Roth got in touch with commercial...

It's not unusual for fan-made trailers for films using either intellectual property or names they have no legal right to to be contacted by lawyers of the actual rights holders. It is unusual, however, that the reason for the contact is because the rights holder actually liked what they saw and wants to turn it into a real movie. In the case of 'Clown,' it went a little something like this:
Step 1. Make a trailer for a non-existent horror movie about a man who turns into a murderous wereclown.
Step 2. Insert title cards faking the legitimacy of the movie, including one that claims 'Clown' was made by 'Hostel' director Eli Roth.
Step 3. ???
Step 4. Profit!
The wildcard that is Step 3 is normally when things fall apart, but for 'Clown' creators Jon Watts and Christopher Ford, it actually ended up netting them a meeting with Eli Roth,...

Eli Roth recently produced "The Last Exorcism," which became a financially successful film after it grossed $60 million on a budget that's under $2 million. Now, Roth is looking to find other horror movies to produce, starting with "Clown." "Clown" recently appeared online as a fake trailer (watch below) put together by director Jon Watts and writer Christopher Ford. To make their video look more legit, they added logos of Lionsgate, Screen Gems and even mentioned that it's produced by Roth, which it wasn't. "I was blown away when I saw that 'Clown' trailer," said Roth. "Everyone thought it was real, or that I had at least made a fake trailer. I called the guys right away and their first response was 'Thank you for not suing us!' I said 'Sue you? Let's make this into a real film!' They are incredibly talented, smart guys ready to make their feature debut.

As a director he still seems to be at work on his FX extravaganza Endangered Species. But with his producing hat on, Eli Roth has just scored two new projects in the form of Clown and Aftershock, in a deal with new production company Vertebra Films.Clown, which will grow Machete-style from a grindhouse-y fake trailer, involves a doting father who dresses up to entertain his son's birthday guests, but then finds that, alien-Venom-symbiote-like, the pom-poms and baggy trousers and big shoes are an evil entity that he can't remove. First-timers Christopher Ford and John Watts put the trailer together prominently using Roth's name. They were afraid he'd sue, so must be rather pleased that he gave them a job instead. Ford wrote and Watts will direct.Aftershock meanwhile is a violent thriller set in the aftermath of this year's Chilean earthquake. Roth will co-write this one with Guillermo Amoedo and Nicolas Lopez.

Clowns have always been nightmarishly scary, and have always been great in horror films. This is the trailer to a possible new film called Clown, written by Waverly Films' Christopher Ford and Jon Watts.
They say that it's going to be directed and produced by Eli Roth, but I haven't been able to find anything to confirm that, so I think this may be a fake trailer. I hope it's real though! I love the idea of a clown suit that will transform you into an evil clown monster. It looks like it could be a pretty terrifying horror film.
Watch the trailer below and tell us what you think! Real or fake? Do you like the concept?...

I Can See You is a film that was completed in 2008 and the movie is now available on DVD. Rich in the surreal, I Can See You is an impressionistic take on the typical formula of: a group of twenty-somethings go out to the bush only to be sliced and diced by the strange locals. Slow in pacing, initially, the music and final act make up for any early flaws.
The film stars Ben Dickson as Richards, a man who has encountered a block in artistic endeavours, Ben suggests a trip into the countryside to find inspiration for an ad campaign. Also, starring Duncan Skiies as Doug, Christopher Ford as Kimble, and Olivia Villanti; each of these characters take a step into a dream world, just outside of New York City. Instead of finding inspiration in the deep woods, the characters find a possible zombie,...
