Lucas Heyne’s feature directing debut Mope will have its world premiere later this month in the Midnight section of the Sundance Film Festival. Deadline has the first look at the movie co-written by Zack Newkirk and Heyne and produced by Parkside Pictures in association with Saxton Cinema & Uncooperative Pictures.
The drama is based on the true story of a real-life murder in 2010 at a San Fernando Valley porn company. That’s where Stephen Clancy Hill, a mope (slang for a wannabe porn star), who was living in the company’s warehouse at the time, went on a rampage with a sword when he was told he was fired. He eventually killed his friend and fellow mope Herbert Wong, who tried to intervene when Hill was attacking two others. Hill was killed in a standoff with police five days later.

In indie filmmaker Bradley King’s Santa Monica, Calif. office, Legos cover the desks, and multi-colored index cards line the walls. They’re both tools for King and his writing partner, Bp Cooper, to map out their screenplays. The indie filmmaking duo has a new sci-fi movie in theaters this Friday called “Time Lapse.” The index cards – complete with yarn connecting each plot point – is a familiar writing tool, and King and Cooper are using it now for two in-the-works scripts. One wall of their office is also devoted to breaking down the plot of Alfred Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest” for inspiration. The Legos – and their boxes with labels like “minifigs,” “lights” and “vehicles” – are less commonly seen in writers’ offices, so let King explain: “When you’re playing with toys or dolls you don’t have to be like, ‘What’s this character’s motivation?’ You just immediately are like,...

If you had a way to see into the future, what would you do with that power? Would you use it to make money, to spark artistic inspiration, or to fix your relationship? All three happen in new indie sci-fi film “Time Lapse” when three friends discover a camera that can take photos of the future. They find the massive camera in their neighbor’s apartment, pointed directly at the living room window of their own Los Angeles bungalow apartment. Soon they figure out that “the machine,” as they call it, prints a photo at every day 8 p.m. of what’s happening 24 hours in the future. Roommate Jasper (played by George Finn) takes this opportunity to bet on dog races as the camera's Polaroids reveal the race results. Meanwhile, his painter roommate Finn (Matt O’Leary) breaks his creative block as the photos give him a peek at paintings...

Covering Fantasia for the first time was a hectic, enjoyable experience. They give you a badge with your name on it and everything. However, as for this year’s lineup, I have a little trouble being enthusiastic. With some major exceptions like Guardians of Galaxy, not listed here only because it’s appearance at the Festival seemed more coincidental than prestigious, a lot of the hyped up releases played weakly. Also, I’ve been no stranger to openly criticizing Fantasia audiences as a whole, more than willing to behave as sheep (or, in this case, cats) and applaud even the weakest of films due to a genre-note or laugh –however unintentional. So I found respite in some of the quieter films, and maybe a few major ones. No matter; Here are five things that truly deserve to gain wider audiences.

A festival the likes of Fantasia is not to be tread lightly. For a variety of evident reasons it is a behemoth of an event, lasting far longer than the vast majority of other movie festivals and offering a slew of genre features and shorts ranging from lighter fair some may deem to be mainstream to supremely hard core, provocateur material. As with any event of similar ilk, not everything showcased earns the passing grade. Quite the contrary in fact; when 150 or more motion pictures are shown to the public, at least some are guaranteed to be utter tosh if not downright risible. Swimming through the ocean of bad, decent and good movies for a three-week period will invariably result in one stumbling upon some standout efforts. Below are five that won me over easily, sometimes in rather shocking ways.

Life is difficult enough as it is without the pressures of having to follow the blueprints of a perfectly defined future. At least without knowing what tomorrow has in store a person can always reassure themselves with the knowledge that can create their own destiny. The concept of being told exactly what will happen in the near future is a frightening one. What could be changed? Why would something be changed? What risks are incurred by changing anything at all? Such existential queries are sufficiently weighty to bring madness upon anyone. Such is the precarious predicament a trio of protagonists find themselves wrestling with in the debut feature film from director Bradley King, Time Lapse.

Opening with a shot of swirling red paint, which then has tiny flecks of white thrown into the mixture to disturb the surface and complicate the image, Bradley King and B.P. Cooper's Time Lapse shows just how bloody far you can go with a tiny budget, a great prop, and two locations. The script here is a beauty that finds new ways to look at time travel causality -- or, rather, the dangers of perceived causality -- along with the good old genre standby of the 'big bag of money' landing in your lap. To prove it's the real deal, the film also diligently delves into trust-issues that develop amongst friends when a morally questionable opportunity in life presents itself. At 20, everyone wants to be an artist,...

It seems that in most time travel movies, the characters who are jumping through time are more concerned with not screwing up the timeline by making changes to it, than in personal gain but that’s about to change because the next evolution of the indie time travel movie is here: the selfish time travel crime thriller.
