The BBC and Netflix version of Watership Down is a puzzling revival of the classic.
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
This review contains spoilers.
You’d have to be made of stone to not get a little something in your eye at the close of director Noam Murro’s two-part series. It’s an emotional finale to a unique story of companionship, survival and human destruction that had readers of Richard Adams’ 1972 novel and viewers of Martin Rosen’s 1978 film wiping away tears.
For all the peril the rabbits experience after fleeing their doomed warren to find the beautiful Watership Down, we don’t expect the emotional gut-punch of Hazel’s visit from the black rabbit as he finally rests, aged and weary, in the safety of his well-earned home. We’re prepared for his death in a vicious fight to the death with Captain Woundwort,...

On Friday morning Sam Smith released “Fire On Fire,” a song he co-wrote with producer/songwriter Steve Mac for the forthcoming adaptation of the classic Richard Adams’ novel, “Watership Down.”
The song, which will serve as the theme to the animated mini-series, is a characteristically sweeping Smith ballad, recorded with the BBC Concert Orchestra at London’s Abbey Road Studios in September 2018.
“I am so excited and honored to be a part of this new adaptation of ‘Watership Down,’” Smith said. “This story is so powerful and timeless, and it has been thrilling to work with director Noam Murro and his team and the incredible Steve Mac on this song for it. I hope everyone loves it as much as I do.”
James McAvoy, Olivia Colman, Ben Kingsley, John Boyega, Nicholas Hoult, Gemma Arterton and Daniel Kaluuya lend their voices to “Watership Down.” The series will premiere on BBC One in the UK,...

Sam Smith shared a stirring new ballad, “Fire on Fire,” his contribution to BBC 1 and Netflix’s Watership Down adaptation. “When we fight, we fight like lions / But then we love and feel the truth / We lose our minds in a city of roses / We won’t abide by any rules,” Smith sings. “Fire on fire / Would normally kill us / But this much desire / Together we’re winners / They say that we’re out of control And some say we’re sinners.”

In the midst of war, the faintest ray of light can be salvation. Richard Adams’ 1972 children’s novel is positively awash with sunshine compared to Martin Rosen’s 1978 children’s horror movie. The short-lived 1999 TV series skewed back toward the author’s original tone, yet each entry carried real weight, be it the biblical and mythological interpretations or the story’s gruesome jolts — and permanently etched in the minds of its young viewers.
Now, Netflix and the BBC revive the fantasy tale as a potent, stunning, and a tad too ugly vision of a rabbits’ world not that different from our own. Sent fleeing from their den by human development — can anyone say “gentrification”? — the new four-part story tracks Hazel (James McAvoy), Fiver (Nicholas Hoult), and a slew of other plainly drawn bunnies as they try to survive. Still, this is an optimistic spin on an old story originally crafted for kids.

Watership Down is considered to be one of the most traumatizing children’s stories for a lot of people. I remember being completely shocked when I first saw the original 1978 animated adaptation. It’s a fantastic story, but it really is quite brutal.
BBC and Netflix teamed up for a new animated adaptation of the story and today the first trailer for the four-part series has been released. The film tells the story of survival, pain, and hope as a group of rabbits faces numerous trials while searching for a new home.
Judging by the trailer, it doesn’t look like there will be as much blood as the original film, but it still looks like it will be brutal.
The series boasts an impressive cast that includes James McAvoy as Hazel, Nicolas Hoult as his little brother Fiver, Olivia Colman as Strawberry, and Gemma Arterton as Clover. In addition there’s John Boyega,...

When they catch you, they will kill you… but first they must catch you. Ominous words in the first trailer for the remake of classic animated drama Watership Down.
The trailer for the Netflix and BBC One co-pro gives off an almost Game of Thrones vibe as it follows the adventure, courage and survival of a band of rabbits on their flight from the intrusion of man and the certain destruction of their home.
The series, which airs around Christmas on both the British public broadcaster and Svod service, has an A-list cast including James McAvoy, Daniel Kaluuya, Nicholas Hoult, Ben Kingsley, John Boyega, Gemma Arterton, Rosamund Pike, Gemma Chan, Peter Capaldi, Taron Egerton, Miles Jupp, Freddie Fox, Mackenzie Crook, Olivia Colman, Anne-Marie Duff, Rory Kinnear, Tom Wilkinson, Jason Watkins, Craig Parkinson, Henry Goodman, Lee Ingleby, Charlotte Spencer and Daniel Rigby.

The BBC has teamed up with Netflix for a new CG animated adaptation of the classic kids book Watership Down that ended up traumatized lots of kids. Especially that first animated adaptation that was made in 1978. Damn! In case you need a reminder here’s a video featuring some of the most brutal clips:
Thanks to RadioTimes, we have our first look at the new version of the series that features several of the main characters, including Hazel (James McAvoy), his little brother Fiver (Nicolas Hoult), Strawberry (Olivia Colman), and Clover (Gemma Arterton).
The series will consist of four hourlong episodes. I have no idea if they will lighten things up with this new adaptation or if they plan on keeping it dark and disturbing. We’ll just have to wait until we see a trailer. In the meantime, check out the synopsis and photos:

Peter Capaldi has joined the all-star voice cast for the BBC and Netflix adaptation of “Watership Down,” and Sam Smith is recording the theme song for the animated miniseries.
News had already leaked about other voice cast members, including James McAvoy, John Boyega, Olivia Colman, Gemma Arterton, Ben Kingsley, Daniel Kaluuya, and Taron Egerton. The BBC has now confirmed these and the addition of former “Doctor Who” star Capaldi. Sam Smith’s musical input, and the first images from the series, were also revealed Thursday. The series’ director is Noam Murro (“300: Rise of the Empire”).
Richard Adams’ classic book was first published in 1972 and tells the story of a group of rabbits fighting for survival as their habitat is threatened. A 1978 animated movie adaptation was well-received and featured the Simon and Garfunkel song “Bright Eyes,” which was a No. 1 single in the U.K.

I've somehow never even heard of Watership Down, but I understand it had a profound impact on a lot of people when they were growing up. Now the story will be able to find a larger audience and reach a whole new generation, as the BBC and Netflix are teaming for an animated miniseries adaptation of Richard Adams' novel. Variety reports that the show will be available sometime in 2017. The outlet has a good breakdown of the story and an announcement of its impressive cast:
Set in the idyllic rural landscape of southern England, the adventure tale follows a band of rabbits on their flight from the intrusion of man and the certain destruction of their home. Led by a stouthearted pair of brothers, they journey forth from their native Sandleford Warren through the harrowing trials posed by predators and adversaries, toward a promised land and a more perfect society.

Netflix and BBC are partnering to stage a small screen revival of Watership Down, an adaptation of Richard Adams’ cherished children’s novel that first hit book shelves in 1972.
Pitched as a four-part miniseries, both Netflix and the BBC have already enlisted a star-studded ensemble to voice many of the lead characters of Adams’ beloved tale, including Star Wars: The Force Awakens breakout John Boyega (Bigwig), James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Ben Kingsley and Gemma Arterton.
Selling north of 50 million copies since it was first published, there’s no doubting the legacy of Watership Down, and that’s something the BBC is aiming to preserve with this all-new interpretation. In light of today’s announcement, Matthew Read – Commissioning Editor at the British broadcaster – released the following statement:

A not-insignificant number of children were scarred for life by the horrifying 1978 animated adaptation of Richard Adams' allegorical 1972 novel Watership Down -- and many of those wounds were reopened today, with news that Netflix is partnering with the BBC for a brand-new version. The four-part CG-animated miniseries, which will be directed by Noam Murro (300: Rise of an Empire) and feature the voice talents of John Boyega, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Gemma Arterton and Ben Kingsley, will reportedly "tone down the levels of on-screen violence to make it more appropriate for children." Which of course does nothing for those already irrevocably traumatized by Martin Rosen's nightmare-inducing take on the material. For those not familiar with the film (or who perhaps saw it before blocking it out), Watership Down centers on a group of eight rabbits who embark on a grim journey to establish a new home after their...

While Zack Snyder's slo-motion, yell-a-thon "300" hasn't aged very well, the movie, and its sequel "300: Rise Of An Empire" (directed by Noam Murro), made money. The first movie was a smash hit, earning over $450 million worldwide. And though the sequel disappointed domestically, internationally -- which is far more important to studios these days -- the picture pretty much did the same business, and "300: Rise Of An Empire" totaled $337 million around the globe. And while there hasn't been official chatter about more installments, Snyder reveals that conversations of some kind have been happening. Talking with Collider, the director revealed there's an anthology approach being considered, which would see the "300" brand being used to tell more David vs. Goliath-style stories. "We’ve been talking about is there a way, possibly, we move out of Ancient Greece and use it as a framing device for other conflicts that happened throughout...

Snyder directed the original 300 in 2006, based on Frank Miller's graphic novel, which starred Gerard Butler and Lena Headey. Snyder then produced a sequel in 2014 called 300: Rise Of An Empire which was directed by Noam Murro and starred Sullivan Stapleton and Eva Green.
Collider recently interviewed Zack Snyder for a Warner Bros. Pictures Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice press junket. The director was asked if we (the fans) will ever see another 300 film.
On the possibility of a sequel, Snyder said:

We’ve been talking about is there a way, possibly, we move out of Ancient Greece and use it as a framing device for other conflicts that happened throughout history. I think I mentioned that we talked about the Revolutionary War version, and we talked about the Alamo, and...

Jamie Foxx has made a deal for one of the leads.Hernany Perla’s script follows what happens when a man is left paralysed after a famous and still-unsolved bank robbery. The twist is that he can only control his eyes, and he’s got to figure out the big mystery of the heist. He’s helped by a caregiver (Foxx) who initially seems to have our hero’s best interests at heart but secretly has his own agenda. Is he trying to hoard hospital jelly? It’s probably more sinister than that.Foxx, who...

It was first rumored back in November 2014 and then seemingly confirmed two weeks ago that Joe and Anthony Russo would be directing Avengers: Infinity War - Part I and Part II for Disney and Marvel as they begin production on Captain America: Civil War. Well, Marvel has now made that officially official. Those two movies will arrive on May 4, 2018 and May 3, 2019 so be sure and clear your calendar. On the DC Comics side of things a new rumor says John Wick directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch are being courted to direct a DC film for Warner Bros. No word on which film as there are plenty of opportunities such as Aquaman (though Jeff Nichols and Noam Murro have had their names rumored around this one), The Flash (though Phil Lord and Chris Miller are rumored for this one), Green Lantern and Cyborg, all stretching into 2020. readmore postid="160841"...

I'm sure most people forget, but Chiwetel Ejiofor had a pretty great showing in a fanboy feature once before, that being his villainous turn in Joss Whedon's Serenity. Now it would appear he's looking to return to blockbuster fair once again, or at least he's being "courted" to do so as Marvel is eying the recent Oscar nominee for a role in Doctor Strange. THR reports sources saying Ejiofor is being sought for the role of the film's villain, which would place him opposite Benedict Cumberbatch who's already signed on to play the title character, the surgeon turned sorcerer supreme. Scott Derrickson (Sinister) is directing for a November 4, 2016 release. Zack Snyder built the foundation for the DC Cinematic Universe with 2013’s Man of Steel, and will be at the helm of another three big installments as well: Next year’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League Part 1 in 2017, and Justice League Part 2 in 2019. As if that weren’t enough to suggest that the director holds a lot of the power about how the Dccu shapes up, we’re now hearing that he may have been responsible for getting another filmmaker’s foot in the door as well.
According to Latino-Review, 300: Rise of an Empire helmer Noam Murro is “on the list” of contenders to helm the upcoming Aquaman film – a list that also includes the previously-rumored Mud director Jeff Nichols. Murro closely emulated the trademark style that Snyder utilized in the first 300 film, so one has to wonder if he’d do the same for Aquaman if given the chance.

Warner Bros is certainly planning ahead when it comes to its DC movie universe, as by the sounds of it, it's slowly moving people into place for its 2018 Aquaman movie.

He’s part of Warners and DC’s big push to get the Justice League and others on to screens to start competing with Marvel, and from the sounds of new rumours, Aquaman will be a big event for the studio. Warners is reportedly hoping to score Karl Urban’s services in an unspecified role, though one that could see him going up against Jason Momoa’s hero. The new information comes from Latino Review’s sources, which means that it has to stay in the rumour decompression chamber for now, despite the site’s increasing reputation for superhero scoops. We already know that both Gangster Squad’s Will Beall and 300: Rise Of An Empire’s Kurt Johnstad have been working on different script concepts and now there’s another link to the latter film, with its director Noam Murro joining Mud's Jeff Nichols on the list of potential megaphone folk.

Last month, rumor spread that Mud and Take Shelter director Jeff Nichols was being considered to direct WB/DC's Aquaman solo film starring Game of Thrones actor Jason Momoa. Now Latino-Review reports that 300: Rise of an Empire director Noam Murro is a new contender for the job, although a final decision hasn't been made as of yet. As Lr notes, the Murro possibility makes sense considering his ties with 300: Roae producer Zack Snyder who, though not officially considered a godfather of WB's superhero franchise, is about as close as it gets considering he'll have directed Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and both parts of the upcoming Justice League (at least) when all is said and done.
I'm hoping they stick with Jeff Nichols (keep your eyes peeled for his first studio movie, Midnight Special, to debut this year), but we'll have to wait and see how it plays out.

Noam Murro ("300: Rise of an Empire") has reportedly emerged as a directorial candidate for the upcoming "Aquaman" movie at Warner Bros. Pictures.
Latino Review broke the news and also says that "The Lord of the Rings" and "Star Trek" star Karl Urban is being sought for a supporting role in the film which may be the villain (Ocean Master maybe?).
Jason Momoa will play the title character in the film. Momoa will make an appearance as the character in next year's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" ahead of this solo film due for release in July 2018. Momoa apparently has a four-picture deal to play Aquaman, the other two films of the deal being the two-part "Justice League" movie
"Mud" helmer Jeff Nichols was linked to the project last month and is said to still be in the running to direct alongside Murro. Urban's involvement will depend upon his "Star Trek 3" commitments.

As the director of Man of Steel as well as the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League movies, Zack Snyder clearly has quite a bit of sway when it comes to the growing DC Cinematic Universe at Warner Bros. So far this clout has led him to direct some huge blockbusters, but it seems it may also be opening the door for his friends. Hence, Noam Murro - the director of 300: Rise of an Empire - is now rumored to be eyed for the helm of Aquaman. Even though "Aquaman" isn't due in theaters until 2018, there's no time like the present to start planning. Warner Bros. currently has dueling drafts of the script on the go, but the bottom line is, any movie set on water is going to be expensive. Toss in what audiences expect from superhero movies these days, and unless you're careful, you could wind up with "Waterworld" on your hands (a movie that actually isn't as bad as its reputation). At any rate, Warner Bros. appears to be trying to piece together the talent to bring the movie to life. Latino Review reports that Noam Murro ("300: Rise Of An Empire") is now in the mix to direct, joining Jeff Nichols on the list of possible filmmakers.
