Growing up in Hong Kong, the future members of the 12-member boy band Mirror had all kinds of jobs — from personal trainers to dancers and martial arts instructors. “The 12 of us did not debut from a training program,” says Edan (who, like the other members, typically goes by his first name). “We came from different places and backgrounds in Hong Kong, and so we have different strengths.”

The Busan International Film Festival’s Asian Contents and Film Market wrapped up its 2023 edition with record attendance from over 2,479 industry representatives, according to organizers.
Despite industry-wide headwinds, attendees from sales and licensing companies, buyers, producers and investors gathered in Busan in an expanded exhibition hall at Bexco, the main venue, to trade content ranging from films and videos to such intellectual property (IP) as novels and digital comics.
“Given the slow film market globally, I think many were eager to find new business opportunities and share information about the state of the market,” said Hyung-rae Kim, the festival representative. “There were a lot of visitors from Indonesia this year. The exhibition hall was packed. Overall, it went smoothly. We’re hoping to connect with other markets in Europe next year and set up new programs.”

Seth Rogen got brutally honest about film critics during a discussion about mental health and self-doubt on the “Diary of a CEO” podcast. The comedian told host Steven Bartlett that negative reviews from critics “hurt everyone very much.”
“I think if most critics knew how much it hurts the people that made the things that they are writing about, they would second guess the way they write these things,” Rogen said. “It’s devastating. I know people who have never recovered from it honestly – a year, decades of being hurt by [film reviews]. It’s very personal…It is devastating when you are being institutionally told that your personal expression was bad, and that’s something that people carry with them, literally, their entire lives and I get why. It fucking sucks.”
Bartlett brought up Michel Gondry’s 2011 superhero comedy “The Green Hornet,” which starred Rogen as the eponymous hero opposite Jay Chou and Cameron Diaz.

Acting and directing were not on Jay Chou’s mind when he first began his music career nearly two decades ago. But over the years, he has accumulated several memorable film and TV roles locally in Asia and in Hollywood. And, between music ventures, he has sat in the film director’s chair.
“I was born to believe in myself and complete my work on my own,” Chou said in a 2012 interview, discussing his work in acting and directing. “Once I understand how something works, I like to do it myself.”
His screen career began in 2005, when Chou made his film debut with the release of car-racing action feature “Initial D,” an on-screen adaptation of the Japanese manga of the same name, directed by Hong Kong’s Andrew Lau and Alan Mak (“Infernal Affairs”).

Released during the Chinese New Year, this movie is ideal for viewers looking for light holiday entertainment. It has two popular leading actors, it’s a family drama but above all, it’s a well-made action movie with a Hollywood feel to it.
Jay Chou is agent Jon Man Fai and he works for the Idc (International Defense Commission). He is in Jordan with his team escorting a criminal scientist to Europe. But they run into an ambush on the way, and his girlfriend, also a team member, is killed and the scientist is kidnapped. Worse of all, he ends up with a bullet lodged in his head. Since it’s too dangerous to remove the bullet, he has only a few weeks left before he becomes completely paralyzed. Hence, he returns home to Beijing to be with his elderly mother.

Kevin Smith is taking another crack at “The Green Hornet.”
Smith, who already has a “Green Hornet” comic book series based on the un-produced feature screenplay he was hired to write by Miramax under his belt, is developing an animated version of “Green Hornet” with kids content producer WildBrain.
The new series will be targeted at a family audience, while retaining many elements from the comics, including the titular character’s high-tech car, the “Black Beauty.”
Set in contemporary times, the new series will follow the adventures of a re-imagined Green Hornet and Kato – now the grown son of the original Green Hornet and the daughter of the original Kato – as they partner to battle crime in Century City.
“It’s an honor to escort the legendary Green Hornet and Kato into their very own animated series for the first time in the rich history of these iconic pop culture characters!

Dust off your fedora and domino mask and make sure there’s gas in the Black Beauty, because the Green Hornet and Kato will once again return to the screen. Despite the fact that the masked vigilantes pre-date Batman and Robin by several years (having first leaped into action on The Green Hornet radio show in 1936), these legendary pop culture figures haven’t had much luck on the screen recently. That’s about to change with Amasia Entertainment partnering with Universal Pictures for The Green Hornet and Kato, the latest attempt to update the pair for a new generation. Michael Helfant and Bradley Gallo are producing.

When it comes to superhero movies, the McU and Dceu are at the top of the pile. After that comes stuff like Fox’s X-Men films, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy and so on. Then you have the largely forgotten curiosities. These are superhero adventures that don’t draw from DC or Marvel and generally don’t do as well at the box office. And right now, for some weird reason, one of them’s cleaning up on Netflix. I’m talking about 2011’s The Green Hornet.

It’s easy to stop being surprised by reboots since really this is the time for them as a lot of people tend to think, and The Green Hornet is likely one that needed it anyway. While it recouped its budget and went even further, The Green Hornet was seen as less than effective as an action comedy since Seth Rogen and Jay Chou just didn’t have the kind of chemistry that was need to really make the movie work. In a superhero-dominated film culture ruled by Marvel and DC, one company is banking on an old, familiar name to shake up the duopoly. Indie film/TV production company Amasia Entertainment announced Wednesday that it secured motion picture rights to classic character The Green Hornet.
First created in 1938 by George W Trendle and later a staple in radio serials, the character spawned multiple big-screen adaptations in the early ’40s before surfacing as a cult hit TV series. Airing just one season from 1966-67, “The Green Hornet” starred Van Williams as Britt Reid, the newspaper publisher who by night fought crime as the masked vigilante that gave the show its title. In one of his early American roles, Bruce Lee played the role of Kato, Britt’s trusted partner.

In one of his early American roles, Bruce Lee played the role of Kato, Britt’s trusted partner.

Amasia Entertainment has won the feature film franchise rights “The Green Hornet,” nine years after Seth Rogen took on the title role for Sony Pictures.
Amasia’s co-founders Michael Helfant and Bradley Gallo made the announcement Wednesday. Helfant is a veteran Hollywood executive who was president and chief operating officer of Marvel Studios for several years starting in 2005.
“When I was a kid, ‘The Green Hornet’ was one of my favorite television series,” he said. “I loved everything about it – The Green Hornet, Kato, and of course, the Black Beauty. They were the coolest! It was personally painful to leave them all behind when I left Dimension. So I tried to option the property again at Marvel before it went over to Sony, and then again in 2017 before the rights landed at Paramount.”

Can this Kung Fu League help save the day? Chinese distributor United Entertainment Partners released this Hong Kong action comedy last fall. This is not a new trailer, but we never featured it whenever it first appeared last year. So why not now...! (Thanks to a tip from Rob.) It looks crazy fun, and super cheesy, and perhaps some renewed interest in this will help it get an international release. Kung Fu League is a big-hearted comedy about a comic book artist nerd who "summons four legendary Kung Fu masters to learn the highest level of martial arts" so he can win the heart of a girl at his office. It's the latest film from Kung Fu Hustle director Jeffrey Lau, and already opened in theaters in China last year. Starring Ashin as Fei Ying Xiong, Kwok-Kwan Chan, Jay Chou, Madina Memet, Andy On, Yu-Hang To, and Vincent Zhao. The...

Paramount is in talks with “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage” director D.J. Caruso to take the reins of its movie adaptation of the Nickelodeon horror series “Are You Afraid of the Dark?”
The project was unveiled last year with “It” writer Gary Dauberman hired to write the script. Matt Kaplan is producing along with Dauberman, who’s a co-writer on both “It” movies, and “The Conjuring” and “Annabelle” franchises.
“Are You Afraid of the Dark?” was created by D.J. MacHale and Ned Kandel and ran as an anthology series on Nickelodeon between 1992 and 1996. It followed a group of teenagers who called themselves the Midnight Society and would meet weekly at a secret location in the woods to tell a scary story. The show was revived in 1999 for two more seasons.

Michel Gondry’s 2011 Green Hornet movie is an odd beast. It came out in the early days of the modern superhero craze, but it was based on a character that most young people had definitely never heard of. Also, it was sort of a goofy, comedic take on the superhero genre, which probably scared off some potential fans in that long-ago, pre-Guardians Of The Galaxy world. The movie turned out okay, but nobody’s really clamoring for another chance to see Seth Rogen and Jay Chou awkwardly cracking jokes and beating up goons in a sequel. And thanks to Sony Pictures losing the Green Hornet rights, that’ll never happen anyway.
Still, The Green Hornet is a relatively recognizable superhero brand, meaning it’s valuable to someone, and that someone is apparently Paramount Pictures. According to Deadline, the studio has just picked up the Green Hornet rights and ...

Deadline is reporting that Paramount Pictures & Chernin Entertainment have acquired the rights to The Green Hornet and have started preliminary work on developing a reboot with Gavin O'Connor (Warrior; The Accountant) attached to direct. O'Connor, who admits to being a massive Green Hornet fan growing up, will also serve as a producer alongside Chernin Entertainment and will work closely with screenwriter Sean O'Keefe on crafting the film's script. Unlike the original '60s series, which starred Van Williams as Britt Reid & Bruce Lee as Kato, or the 2011 action/comedy, which starred Seth Rogen (Sausage Party) & Jay Chou (Now You See Me 2) in the lead roles, the reboot is expected to be a more edgy, more badass take on the classic crime-fighter with the hopes of turning the series into a new franchise for the studio. In the renaissance of comic book films, 2011's "Green Hornet" starring Seth Rogen and Jay Chou, isn't the worst of the bunch but does tend to sit on the lower end of critical estimation.
It was a long shot to adapt as a property, but with acclaimed helmer Michel Gondry ("Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind") directing it was hoped he could come up with something unique. In a new interview with THR, he spoke about his early experience with the film's production back in its first incarnation at Universal:

Magicians as Robin Hoods, using their cardistry and escapology skills to beat The Man. That’s the idea of Now You See Me and Now You See Me 2, now in theaters. The Four Horsemen are back, and the actors behind them had to learn more illusions to play the part, with the help of chief magic and mentalism consultant Keith Barry. The approach to the magic of the franchise changed as Jon M. Chu took the director’s chair for the sequel. While the first movie featured some “illusions of tomorrow” that can’t be done in reality (Isla Fisher in a bubble!), Chu was determined to do the movie’s magic in-camera, in real time, with as little CGI as possible. With the first film, director Louis Leterrier had asked magicians, “What effects have you always wanted to perform but don’t quite have the method for it yet?...

If you had Haymitch Abernathy and the Hulk face off, you could easily predict the clear winner. But if you gave Haymitch Professor X’s powers and got him to stay sober for a few days, the Hunger Games champion would probably have the edge. Haymitch and the the big green guy’s real-life alter-egos had a meeting of the minds that had Woody Harrelson making Mark Ruffalo see green. Literally seeing green. (’Cause he's the Hulk, of course.) Harrelson, who learned the art of mentalism for his role in the Now You See Me films, got to try out his new skills on his co-star when the two of them were in New Orleans (where part of the first film was shot). It was during dinner with Keith Barry, mentalist and hypnotism consultant on 2013’s Now You See Me, and consultant for mentalism and other magic on the sequel to the magician heist movie, which hit theaters today. Barry trained Harrelson via Skype at first, then flew out to work with him in Los Angeles. They met at Soho House, where the Ireland-born mentalist hypnotized a large group of people. “And then I said [to Harrelson], ‘Okay, off you go!’” Barry recalled. “He said, ‘What do you mean?’ I said, ‘You start hypnotizing people!’ As a hypnotist, you have to prepare to fail all the time, and you do fail because there’s various levels of susceptibility, as we call it. But he embraced it, and we just had an absolute blast while we were out and about.” Woody Harrelson as Merritt McKinney in Now You See Me 2. Photo credit: Jay Maidment/Summit Entertainment Cut to a few months later, during Now You See Me’s production in New Orleans: Harrelson had honed his skills well enough to get Ruffalo to forget the number 6 and to see everything as if through a green filter. Barry contends that Ruffalo was genuinely hypnotized, though the actor says he was only pretending to be hypnotized. But, as Barry explained, proficient hypnotists can tell if someone is truly under hypnosis by looking for dilation of pupils and watching the carotid arteries in the neck. “I think Mark doesn’t even know the truth himself,” Barry told me. So I was curious: If mentalists can get people to literally see green, can they change how we see green and red, giving us the experience of different kinds of color blindness? “Yeah, pretty much anything psychological can happen with hypnosis. So, yeah, color blindness is actually quite easy,” Barry said. “I can make myself invisible, float objects around.” Seriously, this dude is Professor X. [I’ll break here to warn you that there’s a Spoiler about the big reveal in the first Now You See Me film a couple paragraphs down.] We’ll have our full video interview with Barry on HitFix next week, but I’ll share one more tidbit from our chat today: His favorite movies about magicians — aside from the Now You See Me movies of course — are The Prestige and The Illusionist (which both came out in 2006). “Those were amazing movies,” he said. “If I was to pick a favorite between the two, I’d probably go with The Illusionist. I just think Ed Norton was amazing in it.” Lesson learned: Hulks make good illusionists. Okay, Eric Bana, when’s your magician movie coming out? Now You See Me 2 opens in theaters today and also stars Jesse Eisenberg, Dave Franco, Lizzy Caplan, Daniel Radcliffe, Jay Chou, Morgan Freeman, and Michael Caine.

It’s no secret that Mark Ruffalo is one of the best and most likable actors out there right now. Not only is he immensely skilled, he just appears to be beloved as a human being as well. Ruffalo has broken through in a bigger way over the last few years, both in terms of Oscar nominations and also bigger budget films. He’s already a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but now he can list Now You See Me as another movie franchise of his. This week, Now You See Me 2 opens in theaters and should only increase Ruffalo’s A-list star power, rightly so, I might add. The film is a sequel to Now You See Me, the surprise hit from a few years back. It concerns a magic act that also doubles as a Robin Hood type heist team. Ruffalo plays Dylan Rhodes, who in...
