Roberto Patino acknowledges that the dystopian themes of “Dmz” have their roots in films like “The Warriors” and “Escape from New York.” But the showrunner wanted to do something completely different with those elements. “We want it to run in the opposite direction of the dystopian tropes and we want to tell a story of an upward slope and a unity of a new start,” he tells us during our recent webchat (watch the video interview above). He also made sure not to get lost or hung up in how America got to the point that it is in the show. “I don’t care how we might get to civil war. That’s not what this show is about. This is a story of people coming together, a story of hope and a story of rebirth.”

HBO Max continues to venture into the comic book landscape but this time it’s Dmz, a series created by Brian Wood and it’s caught in the middle of a second American Civil War that has turned Manhattan into a demilitarized zone; The new show stars Rosario Dawson, Benjamin Bratt, and Hoon Lee. This is a limited series packed with only four episodes; however, in today’s television landscape that’s overcrowded with content, is the Dmz something worth going out of the way to see? Well, based on the pilot…not really. To be clear, Dmz is not a bad show. The beginning

There’s never really an ideal time to premiere a TV show about war.
Invariably, someone somewhere on the globe is experiencing the brutal destruction of armed combat at any given moment, making a fictionalized depiction of it a dicey proposition for any storyteller. This is a lesson that HBO Max limited series Dmz understands quite intimately.
The DC comic upon which HBO Max’s series is based was first released in 2005 and served as a commentary on its era’s wars in the Middle East. The comic’s storyline, which imagined a second American civil war turning Manhattan into a desolate demilitarized zone between two warring factions, could have just as easily been set in Baghdad, Iraq or Kabul, Afghanistan. It was a way to present to the Western world that their worst case post-apocalyptic scenario was someone else’s unavoidable present.

Based on the DC Comics series from Riccardo Burchielli and Brian Wood of the same name, the demilitarized zone of Roberto Patino’s four-part HBO series “Dmz” can be full of surprises. It’s what we know as Manhattan, after a civil war between the Free States of America and the United States of America. We initially see the Dmz as a place of ruins, of sprawling weeds taking over once busy intersections, but then realize the possibility it shows.

In “Dmz,” the first thing you’ll notice are the colors. Moonlight blue floods the sparse room where Alma (Rosario Dawson) sleeps between shifts. A sickly green shades the bathroom where she’s detoxed before seeing patients. Bright lights smack against black edges in the stadium serving as a detainment center for people trying to cross the border illegally. These opening shots provide a stark impression of an America nearly a decade into its second civil war. Alma works in Brooklyn, as she waits for a path into Manhattan, which is now a demilitarized zone caught between the remaining United States and the so-called Free States of America. It’s also the last place she saw her son, Christian.
New York City, she’s told, is dangerous. The 300,000 non-citizens still inhabiting the island have no government, no police, no laws. They were either stranded or chose to live in anarchy.

“Bel Air” is about to feature a “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” reunion — of sorts. Daphne Maxwell Reid, who played Will’s aunt on later seasons of “Fresh Prince,” and Vernee Watson-Johnson, who recurred as Will’s mom on the show, are returning to Bel Air — in guest starring roles for Episode 9 of Peacock’s new drama.
Maxwell Reid and Watson-Johnson portrayed Aunt Viv and Viola “Vy” Smith, respectively, in the original series. For their upcoming guest roles on “Bel-Air,” the two will play “Helen” and “Janice,” members of the Art Council Board of Trustee.
Peacock’s “Bel-Air” reimagines the beloved “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” sitcom — with a new lens on Will’s (Jabari Banks) complicated journey from West Philadelphia to the gated mansions of Bel-Air. The series, inspired by Morgan Cooper’s viral trailer, is executive produced by Will Smith — as well as director/co-writer Cooper and showrunners T.J. Brady and Rasheed Newson.

America seems to become more polarized and divided every day, with no end in sight, but how bad could it actually get?
That’s the chilling question asked by “Dmz,” an upcoming four-part limited series on HBO Max, based on Brian Wood’s DC Comics series of the same name. The story takes place in a near future in which America has become engulfed in a second civil war between the United States and a group of secessionist armies who call themselves the Free States of America. The fighting has resulted in Manhattan turning into a demilitarized zone separating territories held by the two armies. With no government in place to enforce laws, the island is ruled by criminal gangs, with power shifting on a near-daily basis.

Rosario Dawson is willing to risk anything to find her son in the first trailer for HBO Max’s “Dmz.”

The show chronicles the journey of fierce medic Alma Ortega (Dawson), who saves lives while desperately searching for her lost son.
In the trailer released on Monday — which you can watch above — Dawson’s Alma explains that she and her son were split apart during the evacuation out of Manhattan before it became a demilitarized zone. Even though the city is now an active war zone, she decides she must go back in search of him.

CW: Sexual harassment, grooming
This week saw a wave of sexual misconduct allegations against men of varying positions in the comic book industry. The first came from artist Aviva Artzy, followed up by artist and writer Kate Leth, with support from the wife of the late Darwyn Cooke, Marsha Cooke, and convention organizer Andrea Demonakos, accusing Cameron Stewart of grooming underage girls. Grooming is when an older person establishes a relationship with a usually underage one, with the intention of developing a sexual relationship in the future. As a result of this, Stewart, the one time Batgirl co-writer and Seaguy artist, was let go from a previously unannounced DC project and had a variant cover for Image’s Ice Cream Man canceled.

Producers Andre Jacquemetton ("Mad Men") and David Heyman ("Gravity") continue adapting DC Comics' futuristic, 72-issue Vertigo title "Dmz" (2005) as a live-action TV series for HBO Max with Ava DuVernay directing the pilot:
"Dmz" was created and co-illustrated by Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchiell.
"Dmz" is set in the near future, where a second American civil war has turned the island of Manhattan into a 'Demilitarized Zone', caught between the forces of the Us and the secessionist 'Free States of America'.
The 'Free States' movement began with an uprising of secessionist groups that formed a separate government in Montana before spreading across the country.
The 'Free Armies' and Us military first met in combat at Allentown, Pennsylvania where the Free Armies won, then marched into New York.
"...fledgling journalist 'Matty Roth' holds the narrative together as we learn the stories and perspectives of many who live in the shattered city.

Producers Andre Jacquemetton ("Mad Men") and David Heyman ("Gravity") continue developing DC Comics' futuristic, 72-issue Vertigo title "Dmz" (2005) as a live-action TV series for HBO Max streaming with Emmy award winner Ava DuVernay signed to direct the pilot:
"Dmz" was created and co-illustrated by Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchiell.
"Dmz" is set in the near future, where a second American civil war has turned the island of Manhattan into a 'Demilitarized Zone', caught between the forces of the Us and the secessionist 'Free States of America'.
The 'Free States' movement began with an uprising of secessionist groups that formed a separate government in Montana before spreading across the country.
The 'Free Armies' and Us military first met in combat at Allentown, Pennsylvania where the Free Armies won, then marched into New York.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That was my first thought when I heard that Titan were replacing the excellent Robotech book with Robotech Remix. Since 2015, Brian Wood, Simon Furman, Marco Turini and Hendry Prasetya routinely turned in outstanding stories, both script and art wise. The characters were as well fleshed out as could have been expected with the animated source material. Like all good things though it came to an end, and on the plus side it never outstayed its welcome.
So, Robotech Remix clearly isn’t just going to be more of the same. At first glance, the art has reverted to the manga/anime style most commonly associated with Robotech, and the book is supposed to be a sequel of sorts to the last one, both of which liberally took as their...

HBO Max is adapting DC/Vertigo comic book series Dmz as a television pilot, setting Ava DuVernay to direct the pilot.
Dmz, the cynically-prophesizing DC Comics-published Vertigo title depicting a United States left literally divided after a second Civil War, is the next comic book-inspired small screen project embraced by HBO. Indeed, the premium cable channel has brought in a prominent name in Ava DuVernay – who happens to have her hands full with DC film adaptation The New Gods – to direct the pilot.
There's certainly an intriguing and potentially controversial Civil War premise with this project; politically-charged peril that HBO recently opted to avoid by officially cancelling Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss's long-stalled TV project, Confederate, which carried similar themes of an alternate universe in which America has experienced a second Civil War. HBO's retention of this project, however, seems to...

Former "Mad Men" executive producers Andre and Maria Jacquemetton, along with "Gravity" producer David Heyman, continue developing a comic book-based TV series adapting DC Comics' near future title "Dmz":

With Robotech #9, Simon Furman finally flies solo. Brian Wood’s four issue handover, where they shared billing as co-plotters, has finished and the book will stand or fall on Furman alone. So far, admittedly it may be a little too early to tell for sure, the future only looks Ok. The Brain Wood issues were very strong, and the following four issue by Furman and Wood had some irritating subplots that I suspect came more from the pen of Furman. Time will tell. Although I’m still not forgiving anyone for ‘Macross Has Talent’. Ever.
Last issue had a whole lot going on, mainly on the bad end of the spectrum from our heroes point of view. We saw Rick, with Max and Ben, taking the fight to alien commander Breetai on his command vessel. Brave but foolhardy.

Although Brian Wood officially signed off with Issue 4, he has clearly road mapped out quite a bit of the first year of this book, as he continues to get a co-plotter credit with Simon Furman. Furman has been the writer for three issues now, though obviously his vision of the book will need to wait a little longer. Fair enough, as there is nothing worse following a book, getting engrossed in the various plot threads and storylines, and then have a new writer take the book in a ‘new direction’. Which usually means I can’t be bothered to integrate all that other work into mine, so there. None of that here. We have synergy. We have unity. We have Wood Furman, which sounds like a 60′s folk singer. But I digress.

Titan Comics' "Robotech" #8, available March 14, 2018, is written by Brian Wood, Simon Furman and illustrated by Marco Turini, with covers by Simon Roy and Claudia Ianniciello:
"...Simon Furman joins writer Brian Wood to chronicle the ongoing adventures of the 'Sdf-1', in this second arc of the series..."
The "Robotech" franchise started with an 85-episode anime television series produced by Harmony Gold USA in association with Tatsunoko Production, debuting in North America in 1985. It was adapted from three original Japanese anime television series including "Super Dimension Fortress Macross", "Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross" and "Genesis Climber Mospeada".
In the original series, 'Robotechnology' refers to the scientific advances discovered in an alien starship that crashed on a South Pacific island. With this technology, Earth developed robotic technologies, including transformable 'mecha' to fight three extraterrestrial invasions.

The common practice these days when a new book is launched, or a tired property is relaunched, is to attach a top creator to it, have him or her do their bit to get it off the ground, then pass the baton on. The hope is that enough groundwork has been laid, and interest generated, that readers will stay with the book even though the start creator leaves. Coincidentally you may notice Brian Wood is credited just as a plotter this issue, with Simon Furman coming on board as scripter. Wood has done a good job giving this incarnation of Robotech its own feel, and the characters their own voices, but I am a little unsure if he has done enough to just pass it off. Time will tell of course, and Simon Furman is a very safe pair of hands.

A major character will be killed off in Titan’s new Robotech series, Harmony Gold USA and Titan Comics announced today, paving the way for a stunning new arc penned by fan favorite writer Brian Wood (Dmz, Briggs Land) and legendary Transformers scribe Simon Furman.
The critically acclaimed and sell-out comic series, which launched in August, takes into account every iteration of the Robotech series, and casts a fresh eye over classic characters from the iconic ‘80s sci-fi anime.
Now, the series (written by Brian Wood with art by Marco Turini) is set to scale new heights with a dramatic first season climax that will change the face of Robotech forever… including the death of a major member of the team! But will it be Rick Hunter, Lisa Hayes, Lynn Minmei, Roy Fokker, Claudia Grant or Henry Gloval who pays the ultimate price?

Earlier this year, it was announced that Titan Comics partnered up with Harmony Gold to revive Robotech in comic book form. They hired writer Brian Wood (Briggs Land, Dmz) to develop it with artists Marco Turini and Marco Lesko. Today we have our first look at the revival thanks to a teaser trailer that was released featuring some of the art from the comic. I've also included a few comic panels that were released.
Created by re-editing three different anime series, “Robotech” originally aired in syndication in the United States in 1984. It’s a sci-fi epic in which the human race finds itself on the brink of annihilation and under attack by a fleet of gigantic alien warships capable of destroying Earth. Humanity’s only hope for survival lies within the secrets of Robotechnology, which allows humans to develop powerful transforming robotic systems and interstellar spacecraft.
As you'll see, Robotech has a new look.

Titan Comics have announced that New York Times best-selling writer Brian Wood (Dmz, Briggs Land, Northlanders) will helm their brand-new Robotech comic series – based on the legendary 80s animation by Harmony Gold – which is set to launch in 2017.
First airing in the USA in 1985, Robotech was the gateway to anime for many fans – capturing their imagination with its epic generational storyline involving war, romance, and, of course, the transforming Veritech fighters that defend the Earth against extra-terrestrial attacks. The original 85-episode series delved into humanity’s struggle against a series of alien invasions, from the gigantic Zentraedi to the mysterious Invid, battling for control of advanced alien technology that crash-landed on Earth.
Said Robotech’s Tommy Yune:
We are excited to have the opportunity to work with Brian to expand the Robotech universe. His bold approach to storytelling is thoughtful and will be full of surprises for fans.
