To Washington Heights we go. The Tony Awards head to a new venue this year, the United Palace, but the excitement of honoring the year’s best in theater is the same as ever. If, like me, you can’t wait for Sunday night’s event to begin, that’s where math can come in.
Similar to the Oscars, I’ve built a mathematical model to predict the Tonys in all 26 categories, based on a combination of which categories a show is nominated in, the aggregated predictions of various Broadway critics, and the results of the Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and Drama League Awards. The model is trained on historical Tony Awards data over the past quarter-century — inputs that have done a better job of predicting each category in the past get more weight in this year’s predictions. In some years, the favorites will dominate, like the final...

With 38 productions eligible for this year’s Tony Awards, there were plenty of names missing when nominations were announced on Tuesday morning. Among the most surprising 2023 Tony nominations snubs was “Life of Pi” for Best Play. The production earned nine Olivier Award nominations across the pond, winning Best New Play, Actor (Hiran Abeysekera), Featured Actor, Lighting Design and Set Design. But at the Tonys, it missed out on a Best Play bid and didn’t score a nomination for Abeysekera. The production did perform well in the design categories, though, earning five nominations including for director Max Webster.

The Drama League today announced the nominations for the 2023 Drama League Awards. Honoring achievements on and Off-Broadway, the nominations were announced this morning by Roger Bart (“Back to the Future: The Musical”) and Justin Guarini (“Once Upon A One More Time”) at the New York Library for the Performing Arts. Winners will be revealed at the 89th Annual Drama League Awards ceremony at the Ziegfeld Ballroom on Friday, May 19, 2023.
“I don’t think I’ve experienced a theater season in New York ever like this one,” noted Artistic Director Gabriel Stelian-Shanks. “There’s been a range, a breadth, an expansion of possibility that has been truly astonishing to witness. Theater makers have inspired not only with their creativity, but also with their drive and determination to serve audiences with vision and talent. These nominees reflect the promise and greatness inherent in the work of theater folk, and I can’t help but be deeply proud.

When a character promises a life story so inspirational it’ll make a believer of an atheist, the tale better come through on some big-time convincing. Life of Pi, Lolita Chakrabarti’s stage adaption of Yann Martel’s heart-tugging 2001 novel opening tonight at Broadway’s Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, won’t likely be churning out any religious converts, but renewed faith in the art of puppetry is all but guaranteed.
Starring the winning young actor Hiran Abeysekera, reprising his Olivier Award-winning London turn as the title character, Life of Pi, directed by Max Webster, sticks closer to the novel than to Ang Lee’s 2012 film adaptation, building the plot around a maritime investigation rather than the writing of a book – and, of course, replacing CGI beasties with enough fully articulated life-size puppets to populate a zoo, or at least a lifeboat. All aboard, at one time or another, are a hyena,...

Could we be seeing any of them contend at this year’s Tony Awards? Below is a plot overview of each play as well as the awards history of its author, cast, and creative teams, plus the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.
“Pictures From Home” (opens February 9; closes April 30)
This stage adaptation of Larry Sultan’s 1992 photo memoir is a comic and dramatic portrait of a mother and father, and the son who photographed their lives. As Larry tries to capture his parents, their reality explodes from the frame in an exploration of the power of art and how much it reveals.
Adapted for the stage by WGA nominee Sharr White, the production stars Tony winner Danny Burstein, three-time Tony winner Nathan Lane, and four-time Tony nominee Zoë Wanamaker.

Just over 63 years ago, Theodor Geisel — better known by his pen name, Dr. Seuss — wrote and illustrated a holiday-themed children’s book meant to teach kiddos that Christmas isn’t about spending outrageous sums of money to build a tree-toppling pile of presents; it’s about family, togetherness, and celebrating rebirth at the end of a long year.
So, naturally, “The Grinch” has been adapted a billion times over by every money-hungry corporation out there. It only took nine years for a TV version to hit screens, and that’s before the terrifying Jim Carrey/Ron Howard movie started dominating cable channels every December, or Illumination’s 2018 animated movie sat perched and waiting in Netflix queues for over a year, only to disappear December 4.
But fear not Seuss fans. “The Grinch Musical!” is here to offer two hours of fresh holiday entertainment thanks to NBC’s 2020 adaptation of the 2007 stage production.

Matthew Morrison is set to star in a taped two-hour production of “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch Musical!” at NBC, which will be filmed at the Troubadour Theatre in London and air next month.
The “Glee” alum will play the curmudgeonly Grinch himself for the televised musical adaptation of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” which will air Dec. 9 at 8 p.m.
Per NBC, “Dr. Seuss’ famous book tells the story of a reclusive Grinch who plotted from his cave atop snowy Mt. Crumpit to steal Christmas from the Whos in Who-ville. Then on Christmas Eve, disguised as Santa Claus and enlisting his loyal dog Max as a reindeer, the Grinch traveled to Who-ville to scoop up the Whos’ gifts and decorations. Much to his surprise on Christmas morning, the Whos were unfazed and celebrated the holiday with a heartwarming display of joy and love.”

Move over Fifty Shades of Grey – the movie that’s going to get the most female tongues wagging this year is unquestionably Magic Mike Xxl, in which Channing Tatum returns to the role of an ace male stripper who thought he was out of the life for good, only to find himself drawn back in for more sweaty, sexy antics with such buff co-stars as Joe Manganiello, Adam Rodriguez, Matt Bomer and Kevin Nash.
A new trailer for the R-rated summer flick has splashed online, dripping with enough sexual innuendos and pent-up passion to make a Nsfw label somewhat appropriate. The actual plot of the sequel is irrelevant, as the trailer itself points out through a fourth-wall-breaking narration – Magic Mike Xxl promises some ripped, raunchy fellas doing what they do best, and that’s more than enough for the pic’s target audience.

Did you watch the MTV Movie Awards last weekend? No, we didn’t either, but if you saw any of the recapped jokes or highlights you know that host Amy Schumer’s go-to joke centered on the ladies lust for “Magic Mike Xxl.” If her take is anything to go by, the female audiences most anticipated movie of summer 2015 is certainly this “Magic Mike” sequel. Just dudes’ things.’ And we listened to that,” star Channing Tatum recently joked to EW. There are changes to the movie and the behind-the-scenes creators though; the movie takes place three years after the first one and gone are Matthew McConaughey, Alex Pettyfer and Cody Horn’s characters. But the cast is stacked with newcomers that include Amber Heard,...

I hate to spoil a blockbuster this early, but it appears "Magic Mike Xxl" will have as much sexy shirtlessness as the first movie. I hope your feelings aren't hurt by that revelation. The sequel is out July 1, and in a new poster, we see Channing Tatum in the middle of a serious, shirtless jive. Now we have to learn what Snapchat is and start saying "Snapchat" in regular conversation like mean cool tweens. For the record, "Magic Mike Xxl" will feature Tatum, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Kevin Nash and Adam Rodriguez, who are all reprising their roles from the first film. Matthew McConaughey, Cody Horn, Riley Keough, Alex Pettyfer, and Olivia Munn will not be returning. Newcomers in the sequel include Elizabeth Banks, Donald Glover, Amber Heard, Gabriel Iglesias, Andie Macdowell, Jane McNeill, Jada Pinkett Smith,...
