Iga Swiatek has joined an illustrious list of Wta legends who have previously won the Player of the Year award for at least two consecutive years.
The Polish player was recently crowned the 2023 Wta Player of the Year after another stellar season saw her reign supreme at the summit of women's tennis. It wasn't all plain sailing in 2023 as she fended off multiple challengers for the ultimate crown and briefly lost her No.1 ranking.
The Wta Player of the Year is an award reserved for the best-performing player on tour at the end of every season, and Swiatek deservedly checked this box once again. She won six titles, the most for any woman in singles last season, and finished year-end No. 1 for the second time.
The 22-year-old beat Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, Marketa Vondrousova, Elena Rybakina, and Jessica Pegula to the award. It marks the second time she has pulled...

Iga Swiatek finished the year as world number one, which allowed her to get this newest milestone - 80 weeks as the number one player in the world.
Finishing the year as world number one is in ways a cheat code because you get to coast through that part of the calendar. There are no events, and there is no chance of losing your rank while you rack up the weeks as number one. That's what's happening right now to Swiatek as she begins her 80th week as world number one on the Wta Tour.
To put that into perspective, it's quite a bit. She solidified herself as the 10th longest-tenured number one in the history of women's tennis and is getting closer to Lindsay Davenport, number 9 on that list with 98 weeks. She's already ahead of the likes of Caroline Wozniacki, Victoria Azarenka, Angelique Kerber, Simona Halep, and many other great players.

Several of the Wta stars looking to play a part in the 61st edition of the Billie Jean King Cup have learned the identity of their respective opponents.
The Itf released the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup qualifying draw on Sunday, featuring some breathtaking ties. Sixteen countries will compete in eight home-and-away ties to secure a place in the Finals in November 2024, while eight losing qualifiers will go to the 2024 play-off round.
The top-seeded nation in the qualifying round, Australia, will lock horns with Mexico. The 2022 runners-up will hope to improve from this year's showing where they finished bottom of their group in the Finals. They'll hope to have a fit-again Ajla Tomljanovic back in their ranks by then.
One of the ties of the round pits Great Britain up against three-time champions France in a redux of last year. Former British No. 1 Emma Raducanu will look to meet the Itf's...

Lindsay Davenport lauded Coco Gauff 's shrewdness of the playing schedule following her US Open triumph and opined that it has aided her form in the fall.
Speaking on Tennis Channel for the Inside-In podcast, the former World No. 1 drew contrasts between Gauff's form and results following the US Open in 2022 and the current season.
Davenport was not stressing that players shouldn't play more tournaments but should be wary not to overplay.
Last season, Gauff made the quarterfinal at her home Slam and went on to play two more Wta tournaments in successive weeks (San Diego and Guadalajara) before heading to Fort Worth to play at the Wta Finals on her debut.
She hardly made an impression at the season finale losing all group matches in singles and doubles competition and was eliminated. The situation is much more positive and improved this year, with Davenport crediting Gauff and her team...

Coco Gauff hired Pere Riba over the summer, and for a while, it looked great; however, they are not working together anymore.
This was rather shocking news to many in the community, especially in the manner it was announced. During her match at the Wta Finals against Ons Jabeur, Chanda Rubin and Lindsay Davenport dropped the news that Gauff was not working with Pere Riba anymore.
She hired him leading up to Wimbledon after some good recommendations by other players. He was quite a modern voice in Gauff's camp, pushing her to play more aggressive tennis than before.
While Wimbledon didn't go that well, things looked much better after that. Some attributed that to her bringing in veteran coaching voice Brad Gilbert, which she kind of confirmed.
She maintained that they all worked as a team and were getting along well. Nobody questioned that because she was winning and playing great tennis.

Coco Gauff is excited to work with new USA Billie Jean King Cup Team Captain Lindsay Davenport after she was appointed to the role.
US tennis has been amazing throughout history, and there is always an aspiration to win the team competition. The Davis Cup team disappointed recently by failing to qualify for the Final Eight, but the women's team will play at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals.
The team is pretty strong, even though it lacks the biggest stars. Coco Gauff has played at the Finals for Team USA, but she won't play for the team this time around . Jessica Pegula, as the second-best player, also won't play at the Finals, but the new captain still found willing participants.
She picked Madison Keys, Sofia Kenin, Danielle Collins, Taylor Townsend, and Sloane Stephens for the competition. It's a pretty strong squad overall and can certainly do some damage at the event.

It's another milestone week ticked off by Iga Swiatek , who starts her 71st week as Wta 's number, but there is more to it.
A short while ago, Swiatek held the number one ranking for the longest duration among active players , a record that she forfeited briefly with the imminent return from retirement of former Wta number one Caroline Wozniacki , who spent 71 weeks as Wta's number one.
Wozniacki ranked in 10th spot among Wta players who held top spot for the most weeks, a list that is topped by 22-time Grand Slam singles winner Steffi Graf (377 weeks). Well, Wozniacki has some company now in the form of Iga Swiatek, who ties the Dane in the top 10.
What makes Swiatek's achievement a little more ostentatious than Wozniacki's, she has hoarded on the number ranking for 71 consecutive weeks. Since Ashleigh Barty's retirement , no Wta player has managed to unseat the Polish star from her perch.

Iga Swiatek has been world number one since last year and she's going to be world number one for a few more weeks officially entering the Top 10 in weeks spent as number one.
Swiatek's rise to number one didn't come as a surprise to many but the manner in which she did it surprised a lot of people. She basically started dominating the Wta Tour in the early parts of last year becoming world number one in the process.
Her domination continued for a while as she kept adding to her tally throughout the year. She's yet to lose that number one rank even though her results this year haven't been on the same level as last year. She lost quite a bit of her points but still has enough to maintain her number one rank ahead of Aryna Sabaelnka who almost dethroned her at Wimbledon .

Like many countries in the Wta calendar, Switzerland will also get a chance to showcase home talent at the 2023 Lausanne Open .
Although the Ladies Open in Switzerland was founded already back in 1899, the tournament didn't appear in the calendar after Lindsay Davenport won the title in 1994 in Lucerne. Then, it was held for three years in Gstaad, before moving to Lausanne in 2019.
The three champions of the tournament are Fiona Ferro, Tamara Zidansek, and Petra Martic, but neither of them will make an appearance in 2023. However, there will be one name that everyone will want to see from July 24th to 30th.
Mirra Andreeva is becoming a global superstar only at 16 years of age, and after she confirmed that she will play in Lausanne , fans certainly didn't need another reason to think about purchasing the ticket, as there's a real frenzy surrounding the teenager .

Iga Swiatek is still in the Wimbledon draw with a chance to go all the way and if she does she will equal Serena Williams and her sister Venus Williams in an interesting milestone.
If you asked Iga Swiatek ahead of Wimbledon whether she sees herself among the favourites for the event, she would have probably said no. Even so, her play on the surface so far this year has been rather solid and she's certainly among those players that could technically win it.
Many pundits ranked her 3rd on the favourites list behind Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina. It's been solid so far, though, she was greatly tested in the 4th round against Belinda Bencic. The Polish player lost the opening set of that match but battled back to take the next two and keep herself alive in the event.

Indian Wells (USA), March 18 (Ians) Reigning Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina advanced to her first Wta 1000 final after ending No.1 Iga Swiatek’s title defense at the Indian Wells Masters, here.
The World No.10 notched her second win over Swiatek this season, winning 6-2, 6-2 in Friday night’s semifinals.
Having defeated Swiatek in the fourth round of the Australian Open in January, Rybakina is now the second woman ever to defeat a reigning World No.1 at the Australian Open and Indian Wells in the same year after Lindsay Davenport in 2000. She is also the first player to win multiple matches over a reigning No.1 since 2019.

Exclusive: Even though there were no major tennis tournaments last weekend, the minds of industry leaders were courtside anyway. They were reading King Richard, a spec script by Zach Baylin that has Will Smith poised to play Richard Williams. He is the father of Venus and Serena Williams. Despite having no tennis background, he overcame tremendous hardship, skepticism and his own troubled past to raise two of the game’s greatest players. When his daughters were around the age of four, Richard Williams drew up a 78-page plan for their professional tennis careers. He began giving them tennis lessons and the girls learned the game on cracked, weedy public courts in Compton, reportedly after their father brawled with young toughs who were not fans of the sport and would not make way. The Williams sisters went on to become two of the greatest female players in tennis history, with Serena arguably the best ever,...

Chris Evert and Lindsay Davenport are tennis icons, but thanks to one of television's most popular series, they're trying a new game.
With more than 200 singles titles between them, they play themselves -- as does another veteran of the sport, Justin Gimelstob -- on CBS' "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" Wednesday, Jan. 23. They're seen covering a big match for a player who's found dead soon after (in a tennis ball firing machine, no less), and for both Evert and Davenport, the opportunity was something they couldn't resist.
Evert tells Zap2it she's a friend of series star Elisabeth Shue. "She plays in my pro-celebrity event every year, and she's really good, one of the best celebrity players I know. I think she had mentioned they wanted [John] McEnroe for this, and I said, 'Well, Ok. Have a good show.' Then my agent got a call from the producer, and I said,...

Chris Evert is much happier as a sportscaster than she used to be.
The winner of singles titles in three Wimbledons, six U.S. Opens, seven French Opens and two Australian Opens is nearing the third year of her Espn deal as a Grand Slam tennis commentator. Shortly after retiring from the game, she joined NBC Sports in a similar role, but she admits it took more distance from her days of competing to get comfortable with her TV job.
"I may not be the sharpest tool in the box," Evert muses to Zap2it, "but I know what I see in a match. And I know I'm instinctively pretty spot-on when it comes to strategy and what's actually happening on the court, what the players are trying to achieve and what their styles are. That's my contribution, trying to share something maybe before it happens, or telling viewers something they can't see.

Here’s one way to celebrate the Chinese New Year for 2013. Plan to watch a CSI and CSI: NY two-part crossover set to premier this coming February.
Can your television handle Gary Sinise and Ted Danson together?
This is how it will all go down. CSI starts things off the right way, initiating the storyline during the first hour. The all new episode will feature a visit from CSI: NY‘s lead detective, Mac Taylor, as acted by Gary Sinise, when he travels to Las Vegas to surprise his girlfriend Christine, acted by Megan Dodds. Romance kicks of the crossover, but a possible homicide fuels it from there. Christine winds up missing! Surely Ted Danson’s D.B. Russell can assist with the search.
The second hour is an all new episode of on CSI: NY, which unfolds as Russell heads back to New York with Mac when Christine’s trail...

EW has the trailer for TNT's upcoming David E. Kelley medical drama Monday Mornings, which features a scruffy Jamie Bamber in scrubs. I think that's enough to get me to check out the pilot.
NBC is developing a comedy created by and starring Kenan Thompson which could take Thompson away from Saturday Night Live.
CSI is planning an episode where the team investigates the death of a female tennis pro and has booked champs Chris Evert and Lindsay Davenport.
The Av Club takes a look at 30 Rock and notes that in just about any other year, it would have been the kind of short-lived comedy that lands on critics' lists of brilliant shows that ended too soon, like Action, Buffalo Bill or Get a Life.

Serena Williams thoroughly thumped Maria Sharapova in the women's singles gold medal match at the 2012 Summer Olympics, winning 6-0, 6-1 in a match that lasted barely over an hour. And the score didn't even really reflect how dominant Williams was.
It wasn't a huge surprise, though. Historically, Williams has generally had Sharapova's number. They've met 11 times now and Sharapova has only won twice, both back in 2004. This is 31-year-old Serena's first women's singles gold medal. She previously won gold in women's doubles with her sister Venus in 2000 and 2008. They will try to three-peat later in London.
With this win, Serena becomes the first woman in history to have won all four Grand Slam titles (Australian Open, French Open, U.S. Open and Wimbledon) and Olympic gold in both singles and doubles.
In her post-match interview, Serena says of the win, "I have a gold medal in singles! I never thought.

Lindsay Lohan's lawyer has filed new legal documents to persuade a court to proceed with the actress' lawsuit over an advert which allegedly used her name and parodied her life for profit.
The Mean Girls star filed a $100 million (£66.7 million) suit against chiefs at financial firm E-Trade in March over a commercial which depicts a baby girl called Lindsay as a boyfriend stealer and a "milkaholic".
Her legal team accused advertising bosses of exploiting their client's famous first name and public persona without permission, insisting the use of the name Lindsay is a direct reference to Lohan.
E-Trade bosses filed a motion to have the case dismissed in May, claiming there are 250,000 women in the U.S. who share the actress' first name.
But Lohan's attorney Stephanie Ovadia is fighting to proceed with the case, insisting her client is the most famous Lindsay out of a handful of celebrities, including Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn, tennis player Lindsay Davenport and actresses Lindsay Price and Lindsay Wagner.
Ovadia's brief, filed in New York Supreme Court and obtained by the Hollywood Reporter, states: "The issue... is not how many people in the USA are with the name 'Lindsay' or 'Lindsey'. The issue is how many celebrities are with this name 'Lindsay' in the USA, and then (sic) in the context, manner, characterisation, persona... If Defendants take this name, 'Lindsay' in context of a celebrity name (sic) then by Defendants' own admission, there are only a few limited celebrities with this name around, and this number may not be more than four or five...
"The type of a particular role and persona, the role of an alcoholic bimbus woman, that (sic) Defendants were looking for in their said commercial, none of the other celebrity 'Lindsay' as (sic) referred by Defendants... fits into."
Lohan is seeking $100 million (£66 million) in exemplary damages and compensation.

2009 Celebrity Baby Name Roundup
This was a year that saw fewer attention-seeking antics and more real creativity in celebrity parents’ choice of names. Celebrity parents are growing up and becoming more sophisticated in their taste in baby names, just as they did in their taste for fashion. Oscar gowns used to be gaudy, tasteless get-ups designed for maximum exposure of all kinds; now they’re evidence of real individual style. So too with celebrity baby names, many of which are starting to show genuine refined taste and discernment and seem designed to enhance the child’s life.

Pam Shriver’s Bcf Tennis Challenge presented by The Baltimore Sun Media Group is the longest running annual charity event in the world, so its no surprise that earlier this month the event attracted a star-studded line up of celebrities from the sports and tennis world in efforts to raise funds for the Baltimore Community Foundation.
Former world No. 1 and Tennis Hall of Famer John McEnroe joined tennis professionals Lindsay Davenport, Bob and Mike Bryan, Melanie Oudin and John Isner for Pam Shriver’s Bcf Tennis Challenge, which included a World Team Tennis format and scoring.

While Elin Nordegren has been staying completely mum regarding the affair reports addressed to her husband Tiger Woods, her best friend tennis player Lindsay Davenport tells Entertainment Tonight the former model handles her marital woes with class. "She's incredibly hurt by what has gone on, but she handles herself with class, and she's working it out as best she can," says the athlete.
Lindsay, moreover, sets the record straight on reports that Elin deliberately attacked Tiger with a golf club after finding out about an alleged affair. "Certainly she did not go after [Woods] physically and go after him with a golf club. That is not what happened," insists the three-time Grand Slam tennis champ, adding that Elin is a "very loving, very loyal" and "level headed" person.
In further interview with Entertainment Tonight, which was aired on Monday, December 7, Lindsay admits she has spoken to Elin since news of Tiger's alleged affairs broke out.

Fortunately, Lauren already has a leg up on her older brother Jagger Jonathan, 2. “My son Jagger was born at only 36 weeks; Lauren was born at 39 weeks,” Lindsay notes, explaining that the three additional weeks in the womb were worth it.

J names have had their day in the sun: a whole generation of Jennifers and Jessicas, Jasons and Joshuas are now growing up and having babies of their own. Then came the K names popular in the nineties: Kyle, Kayla, Kaitlyn. Next up? The L names. Pamela Redmond-Satran, co-founder of nameberry.com, says that “L is the hottest beginning consonant for babies’ names here and throughout Europe.” Hotter still are names with a double-l sound like Lila and Tallulah.

Rafael Nadal's victory Sunday over Roger Federer earned NBC its best Wimbledon men's final numbers in eight years.
The pair's epic, five-set battle - the longest match in Wimbledon history - averaged a 4.6 overnight rating, up 44 percent over last year's finale, when Federer beat Nadal.
It was also the highest men's final overnight rating involving two non-us players since 1991 - when Michael Stich defeated fellow German Boris Becker.
Saturday's women's final match, in which Venus Williams defeated sister Serena, also scored big for NBC.

New York -- Wimbledon final ratings this year? A smash.
Sunday's daylong battle between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal gave NBC its best overnight ratings for a gentlemen's final in eight years, and the best non-u.S. final ratings since 1991.
"Breakfast at Wimbledon" on Sunday averaged a 4.6 overnight household rating/12 share between 9 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. Et, Nielsen Media Research said. The match, delayed by rain for more than two hours, was won in epic fashion by Nadal. Nadal took home his first Wimbledon title as well as kept Federer from winning his sixth title.
NBC Sports President Ken Schanzer said Monday that the network lost some of its audience during the rain delay but that it was only temporary.
"The entire audience came back once they (Federer and Nadal) got back on the court. It was almost like a three-act play," Schanzer said. "The first act was Nadal. The second act was Federer. The third act was the denounement, the resolution. The drama just kept building."
It was the best overnight rating for a men's final since 2000's Pete Sampras-Patrick Rafter (5.0/14), and up 44% compared with last year's Federer-Nadal match (3.2/9) that Federer won. The peak was 6.5/15 between 4-4:30 p.m. It also was the best overnight men's Wimbledon final since Boris Becker-Michael Stich in 1991, a 5.0/17.
And it also gives NBC the thought that there could be high-rated rematches in the future, and not just at Wimbledon.
"There is an emerging rivalry in tennis, Nadal-Federer, and big audiences tend to be driven by stars and rivalries," Schanzer said. "It's great to have a star, it's even better to have a star and a rival. This rivalry has engaged and I felt that before the match, so frankly what was needed was a great match and it was everything we could have imagined."
Sunday's performance follows Saturday's Serena Williams-Venus Williams final that drew the best overnight rating for a Wimbledon women's final in three years. The match, won by Venus in straight sets, posted a 3.4 rating/10 share, a 21% increase over last year's final between Venus Williams and Marion Bartoli, also won by Williams. It peaked toward the end with a 5.1/15.
It was the highest since the 4.0/12 posted by the 2005 by another final between two Americans, Venus Williams and Lindsay Davenport.
"It's hard to imagine that it could have been a better weekend," Schanzer said.
