Forgiven for Forgetting
After starting the year with one of the best horror sequels of all time in Hellbound: Hellraiser II, we moved into the hilariously smart German satire Killer Condom. Trace and I should have known the good times wouldn’t last!
With this week’s discussion of Renny Harlin‘s The Covenant, we begin a two-week stretch of poorly rated, very dumb thrillers. In the film, Caleb (Steven Strait) is a member of the popular Boys of Ipswich at an elite boarding school. He also has a dangerous birthright: the men in his family can use The Power to get what they want.
The trade-off? The more they use their abilities, the faster they age, as evidenced by his father’s (Stephen McHattie) condition.
Things change with the arrival of dangerous bad boy Chase (Sebastian Stan). Suddenly both Caleb’s relationship with Sarah (Laura Ramsey) and his 18th birthday ascension are under threat.

German director Roland Emmerich made "The Noah's Ark Principle" in Germany in 1984 -- a student film with a budget of over a million Deutschmarks -- and never looked back. He quickly helmed two English-language family films, followed by a move into the worlds of action and science fiction in the 1990s. The peak Emmerich movie is probably still "Independence Day," although his other action and disaster movies -- "The Day After Tomorrow," "2012," "White House Down," and "Moonfall" -- are the connoisseur's choices.
Emmerich (both wisely and unwisely) stretches himself into other genres -- such as the war movies "The Patriot" and "Midway," and the historical dramas "Anonymous" and "Stonewall." It's good to see him pushing himself, taking risks, and experimenting, even if the end results are mixed, to say the least. But he excels at big-budget action movies, and if he's given actors blessed with the necessary star quality to build his beautiful disasters around,...

The compelling series about a solar system under siege concludes after six seasons as war-weary Captain Holden (Steven Strait) takes his salvage ship the Rocinante on its last journey in The Expanse. He and his crew are caught in a conflict launched by Marco Inaros (Keon Alexander), a zealot who has inflamed his downtrodden people living in the asteroid belt, known as Belters. “The tables have turned,” exec producer Naren Shankar says. “The Belters have waged a war on [their former exploiters] Earth and Mars.” (Credit: Amazon Studios) Holden committed the Rocinante to stopping Marco and his Free Navy from launching asteroid rocks at Earth. “The crew has been on a jeopardy-filled recon mission for months, and they are worn down,” he adds. But Shankar warns of “dangers beyond Marco” on the final six episodes (released weekly). As Earth’s U.N. secretary-general (Shohreh Aghdashloo) sends former Martian Marine Bobbie Draper (Frankie Adams...

Throughout its six seasons as one of the best sci-fi TV shows in recent memory, “The Expanse” has always seemed to thrive in certain extremes. From its basic cable origins to its three-year Prime Video run, the show has been at its best when it’s either at rest or its characters are in utter turmoil.
From a pure logistical standpoint, no other series has as full a sense of its world’s mechanics quite like “The Expanse.” Much of that comes from its source material, the books written by James S.A. Corey, the pseudonym of writing team Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (who also write a good portion of the scripts for the new Season 6). The long-established geopolitical relationships between citizens of Earth, Mars, and the Belt complement the tactile nature of resources and equipment it takes to travel between those locations (and beyond them). "Harry Potter can kiss my ass!" Yep, that was the battle-cry of the Sons of Ipswich, the four teen witches at the center of 2006's The Convenant, a movie that definitely falls into the so-bad-it's-good category. Directed by Renny Harlin, the film starred Steven Strait, Taylor Kitsch, Chace Crawford and Toby Hemingway as high school students (never forget that swim meet scene!) who were secretly descendants of colonial witch families. Complications arise with the arrival of a newcomer played by Sebastian Stan, clearly warming up his antagonistic skills for his future in the MCU. While critics didn't exactly fall under...

One of the most satisfying elements of great science fiction is how easily it examines real-world horrors. The Expanse, on Amazon Prime, is a perfect example of creating intriguing storylines with characters you can easily connect with and it feels remarkably relevant. The popular show is now in its fifth season, and frankly, it was a thrill to see the continued quality in the series. You can put plenty of pieces in place to help the process, but a story that takes place centuries in the future needs people to sell it. Luckily, “The Expanse,” one of TV’s longest-running sci-fi series, enters its Season 5 with a cast and crew that’s spent over a half-decade doing it in style.
By the time the show arrives at the outset of its second full season on Amazon Prime Video, it’s seen the existence of colonial outposts on distant planets, fervent religious separatist movements, and people getting help from ancient species to commune with approximations of dead friends. It’s a strange existence for the people of Earth, Mars, and the Belters who live in the outer reaches of the solar system and beyond. By the laws of escalation that govern longform episodic storytelling, it’s an oddness that needs some way to escalate.

In a tale that veers between mawkishness and levity, a woman diagnosed with cancer heads back to her home state where euthanasia is legal
”Here’s to life and all its messy complications!” Cancer is a bitch, life is a journey and other horribly pat sentiments are all given free airing in this well-meaning drama about a subject that merits a far more nuanced treatment: assisted dying. Anna (Pitch Perfect’s Anna Camp) is the prodigal daughter rejected by her father when she came out as gay, who returns to Oregon to find him dead and her brother Michael (Steven Strait) cheesed off at her long absence. But she has come back for a reason: to end her life (euthanasia is legal in the state) because she has inoperable cancer.
Of course, Anna is an artist, making her death doubly tragic. Director Tim True clings to this kind of cliche,...

Warning: contains spoilers for The Expanse season 4
At the beginning of The Expanse season four, the show’s characters stood at the crossroads of a brave and expansive new world, as did the cast and crew in their new home at Amazon. It was a marriage made in heaven. The Expanse was bigger, slicker, bolder, and grittier, but just as gloriously deep, rich and complex as ever. As season five gets ready to drop, let’s remind ourselves of the ups, downs, ins, outs, fights, smites and subterfuge of season four. We’ll start with the set-up and then look at each of the main locations/groups in turn, leading up to the season’s denouement and planet-busting cliffhanger. Major spoilers, obviously, ahead.
In the Beginning
Season three ended with the opening of the mysterious ring gates, and the 1300 habitable systems beyond them. Holden feared the beginning of ‘a blood-soaked...

The Expanse has officially set course toward a bittersweet threshold crossed by many-a-beloved shows: an advance renewal for its final season.
Indeed, as the beloved and beleaguered sci-fi series prepares to premiere its fifth season in December, Amazon Studios has announced the renewal for a sixth and final season for The Expanse, as Deadline reports. Interestingly, while showrunner Naren Shankar and most of the main cast are expected to return for Season 6—notwithstanding plot developments in the upcoming Season 5—the sixth frame will bear a notable absence with the reported ousting of cast member Cas Anvar, who, having played Alex Kamal since the beginning of the series, became embroiled in sexual misconduct allegations this past summer.

The Expanse is coming to an end.
Amazon has ordered a sixth and final season of the sci-fi drama, three weeks ahead of its fifth season premiere.
Deadline has also revealed that Cas Anvar, who faced a string of sexual misconduct allegations earlier this year, will not be back for the final season.
The rest of the cast, including Steven Strait, Dominique Tipper, and Wes Chatham are expected to return.
The Expanse Season 5 is set to debut December 16 on Amazon Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories.
Instead of airing all episodes in one batch, the streamer is rolling them out weekly, in a similar vein to The Boys Season 2.
Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, Co-CEOs and Co-Founders of Alcon Television Group, and Executive Producers of The Expanse, said:

“The Expanse” has been renewed for Season 6 at Amazon, which will also be the show’s last.
The news comes ahead of the show’s fifth season on the streamer, which will debut on Dec. 16. This will mark the second time the show has come to an end.
“The Expanse” aired its first three seasons on Syfy, with the cable networking having cancelled the series back in 2019. Shortly after it was cancelled, it was reported that Amazon was in talks to continue the series, which is produced and fully financed by Alcon Television Group.
The series is set in the future where humanity has colonized the solar system and the people of Earth, Mars and the Asteroid Belt have long been in opposition with one another. When the crew of the Rocinante uncovers an ancient alien technology, a vast conspiracy begins to emerge, one that will bring the solar system to the brink of war.
