The problems with Close to You aren’t immediately apparent. It’s a quiet film about Sam (Elliot Page), a trans man, living in Toronto. He’s trying to decide whether or not to return home for his father’s birthday party. Sam comes from a family whose uneasiness with his transition sometimes manifests as an aggressive insistence on their progressive values. He considers whether he can endure their performance.
Written and directed by Dominic Savage, Close to You focuses on the drama of Sam’s homecoming. Returning to his small town near Lake Ontario forces him to confront long-buried feelings about his family and an old friend (Hillary Baack). The film yearns to capture the stages of this emotional exhumation, but a clunky screenplay makes for a less affecting watch.
The film’s visual grammar is built on intimate close-ups that try to capture the imperceptible awkwardness of the past and present colliding.

"This is unnatural, we gotta tell someone." "No, we can't!" "Why not...?" "Because they'll take it away from us!!" Time to catch up with this clever sci-fi short film titled Burnt Grass, which originally premiered in 2014 at the Toronto Film Festival. Thanks to a bump from Short of the Week, it's now available to watch on YouTube. Alex Paxton-Beesley and Christopher Jacot star as Sally & Jack, a young couple in the city, discover a strange phenomenon in their backyard that duplicates organic life. Sally quickly envisions its wild possibilities, while Jack suffers its consequences. This almost reminds me of the duplication machine in The Prestige, but with entirely different consequences. If you're intrigued by cloning, this is a must watch short. Thanks to Short of the Week for the tip on this. Brief description from YouTube: "Sally and Jack, a young couple in the city, discover a strange phenomenon in...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Love,” the penultimate episode of “The Bold Type” Season 4.
Meghann Fahy knows Freeform’s “The Bold Type” isn’t necessarily the most realistic, but in an interview with the Variety “After-Show,” she recognizes Sutton’s slow rise from assistant to junior stylist as a true-to-life arc.
“It took Sutton four years to become a junior stylist, she was an assistant for that long,” she says. In comparison to office wunderkinds Jane (Katie Stevens) and Kat (Aisha Dee), Sutton experiences real corporate ladder struggles and set backs before arriving at her dream job.
This payoff doesn’t serve as instant gratification, however.
In the penultimate episode of the fourth season, Sutton and Richard (Sam Page) hit a crossroads as a couple. Richard, at 41-years old, wants kids and doesn’t have time to waste. After Sutton suffers an early miscarriage,...

When will Noah and Anna realize that they're not equipped to do battle with criminal masterminds?
Not soon enough, as became readily apparent on Pure Season 2 Episode 5.
Anna was arrested, right in front of Augustus, and Noah's Klaas Klausen alias was surely shredded because of his reckless actions.
And what about Isaak? He's been covering for his father with Estrada, so he's got to be exposed now as well.
Only Tina appears safe for now. But that only lasts as long as Johan's father keeps quiet about how he really came into the money to buy the former Funk farm.
Oh, what a tangled web they have woven!
Pure Season 2 Episode 4 Review: The Proposal
Caught between Augustus and Noah, Anna had no choice but to ask Augustus for more time to mull over his surprise marriage proposal.
After all, she had a lot going on that he had absolutely no...

The Pure TV show has taken an interesting journey to Wgn America (Wgna). The first season of the TV series debut on CBC, and later on Canada's Super Channel, before streaming on Hulu in the United States. Initially, it was considered cancelled by those outlets, but then Wgna and Super Channel partnered with CBC and Hulu to produce this second season. Now that Wgna is debuting season two of Pure, how will it perform in the Nielsen ratings? Is there enough story (and ad revenue) to continue beyond this installment? Will Pure be cancelled or renewed for season three? Stay tuned.
A crime drama, Pure stars Ryan Robbins, Alex Paxton-Beesley, Dylan Everett, Victor Gomez, Alyson Hannigan, Christopher Heyerdahl, Zoie Palmer, and Gord Rand. The story centers on Mennonite pastor Noah Funk (Robbins). Noah must find a way to protect his family, remain true...

Pure Season 2, debuting May 28 on Wgn America, can best be summed up by The Who lyric "Come meet the new boss same as the old boss."
Pure Season 1, which aired earlier this year, told the gritty tale of Mennonite Pastor Noah Funk, who went undercover with the goal of exposing the Mennonite mob which was running drugs from Mexico to Canada.
Once she found out what her naive husband was attempting, Noah's steely wife Anna also got involved in his well-intentioned effort to bring down mob boss Eli Voss.
They were aided in the investigation by disgraced local cop Bronco Novak, who dated Anna and picked on Noah while all three attended the local high school. The dynamic among the trio was one of the first-season highlights.
Noah ended up shooting and killing Voss to protect his adopted son Ezekiel. The season ended with him leaving the Mennonite community and...

Actor Alex Paxton-Beesley explains the arcane language used by her character on Wgn America’s breakout Wednesday night drama, Pure. It is one not heard very often. Wgn America sent Monsters and Critics a really fun behind the scenes clip of America’s drug trafficking drama, Pure. Playing Mennonites on the show, the actors had to do some serious homework and immerse themselves on the culture, religion and the Plautdietsch language spoken in the series. Pure is inspired by true events — about a family of devout Mennonites who get embroiled in the drug trade. One of the funnier bits of information […]

Former How I Met Your Mother star Alyson Hannigan is set for a recurring role opposite Ryan Robbins and Alex Paxton-Beesley on the second season of Wgn America’s Mennonite crime drama Pure.
Inspired by true events, the series goes deep inside a closed, secretive subculture through the eyes of Noah Funk (Robbins), a conflicted, good-hearted man trying to protect his family and preserve his faith. Noah is a newly elected Mennonite pastor, who is determined to rid his community of the scourge of drugs and its ties to a trans-border smuggling alliance with ruthless Mexican cocaine cartels. Just when he thinks he’s won, Noah and his wife Anna (Paxton-Beesley) are thrust headlong into a desperate world of violence, greed and betrayal.
Hannigan will play Esther Dunkel, a lapsed Mennonite who is nobody’s fool and has been helping her lawyer-boyfriend funnel a fortune in cartel cash through a local bank.

Cassie Scerbo's new film, The Perfect Soulmate, might sound like a romantic comedy, but it's anything but.
The 27-year-old actress stars in the upcoming Lifetime movie as Lee Maxson, a bookish young woman who finds solace from her abusive home in the words of a beautiful, accomplished poet, Sarah Miles (Alex Paxton-Beesley). Things get complicated however, as Lee grows increasingly obsessive over her new companion -- and Sarah discovers the tragic ending Lee has planned for her.

The role is a departure for Scerbo, who found fame with her parts on ABC Family's Make It or Break It and Teen Spirit, though the actress told Et over the phone earlier this month that the ability to play such a different character is exactly what attracted her to the project.
"I actually did a film in the past called My Life as a Dead Girl, and I...

Review Kylie Peters 29 Jul 2013 - 07:00
Copper's second season delivers an uncharacteristically low-key episode. Here's Kylie's review of To One Shortly To Die...
This review contains spoilers.
2.6 To One Shortly To Die
Thanks to Laura Akers for filling in as reviewer for last week’s episode! Also, congrats to the astute folks in the comment sections who predicted that Francis Maguire was undercover. I’m sorry I ever doubted you.
This week, Corky and Francis are back together on a case. The stage is set for sparks to fly… and they don’t. Aside from a few plot developments (which could have been covered in a total of ten minutes), To One Shortly to Die is mostly filler. Even the episode’s criminal investigation makes so little progress that it has not been solved by the end of the episode. It’s the day of Lincoln’s second Inauguration,...

Big changes are in the air in the Season 2 premiere of BBC America's "Copper."
It's 1865 and Lincoln's assassination is just around the corner, but the biggest development in Five Points is the return of General Brendan Donovan (Donal Logue), who heads home from the battlefield to restore order in New York's Sixth Ward.
Series co-creator Tom Fontana has described Donovan as a "Boss Tweed like character," but he remains primarily an intriguing mystery in the season premiere. Still, the arrival of Logue -- who has been building up a steady resume of serialized cable dramas including "Terriers," "Vikings" and "Sons of Anarchy" -- is easily one of the Season 2 bright spots so far.
The premiere spends a lot of time on psycho criminal Buzzie Burke (guest star Noah Danby), who carves his initials into Eva (Franka Potente) before she bites off a chunk of his ear. Corky (Tom Weston-Jones...

Chicago – Barry Levinson & Tom Fontana’s very good “Copper” is even better in season two thanks to the inclusion of the always-great Donal Logue as a detective returned to New York City after serving in the Civil War. Logue’s General Brendan Donovan brings a new dark energy to a piece that seems to be getting denser and more engaging as it goes along. The BBC America program is approaching “Deadwood” levels of plotting in the way the show focuses on a part of the world at a time when lawlessness seemed to be one of the driving forces of its formation. This is strong drama.
Television Rating: 3.5/5.0
At the start of season two of “Copper,” Detective Kevin Corcoran (an increasingly charismatic Tom Weston-Jones) seems to be getting more confident and powerful in New York but that power comes with more responsibility and more required wheelings and dealings with the elite.
