Amy Winehouse’s music endures because of her voice, obviously — that sultry Billie Holiday-esque sound that could lend timelessness to lyrics that referenced Slick Rick. Her regular producers, such as Salaam Remi and Mark Ronson, imbued her classical jazz training with a pop sound that borrowed from ’60s and ’70s soul as well as contemporary garage rock and hip hop. Her image was a knowing collage of vintage looks, but while you can’t talk about Winehouse’s hair without referencing Ronnie Spector, that amalgamation of “bad girl” styles became entirely her own. She had the unique ability to cultivate originality from a self-conscious fusion of different musical designs; any traces of influences disappeared under the weight of sampling and swagger.
The gap between Winehouse’s music and her troubled personal life was never as dichotomous as people insisted; her personal demons fueled her music, and she nurtured a refreshingly rebellious persona.

You’ve probably heard a fair bit about this one, and now you get to know what company to pay attention to for all your The Double needs. The film has managed some great press following Tiff, and if Jesse Eisenberg wasn’t enough, writer/director Richard Ayoade is finally getting enough attention that people are curious to see what he’s doing with this one.
Unfortunately, we don’t get a lot of information about release, but this is one to keep your eyes on. If Submarine is anything to go by (which I loved), and if the full cast does even a small percentage of what they are capable of, this is going to be on your top list of 2014.

Chicago – Too many critics have casually dismissed Richard Ayoade’s directorial debut, “Submarine,” as a mere Wes Anderson imitation. Yes, the picture is chockfull of arty hipster posturing: chapter breaks, deadpan cutaway gags and hapless adults viewed by a sullen 15-year-old protagonist forever cloaked in a large black toggle coat. He’s like Bud Cort fused with the hyper-articulate eccentricity of Max Fischer.
Okay, so perhaps “Submarine” is a touch too precious for its own good. Yet for all of its self-conscious pretensions, there’s a tangible and poignant depth to this color-coded coming-of-age tale. Like Max Winkler’s marvelous Anderson-inspired comedy, “Ceremony,” Ayoade’s film employs familiar motifs to construct an overarching vision that is entirely its own. The picture’s cool surface is reflective of the characters themselves, who are adept at keeping their emotions comfortably submerged.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
Craig Roberts has the sort of blank yet oddly...

Best-known for his portrayal of the oblivious computer tech Moss on the cult-favorite British TV series “The It Crowd,” Richard Ayoade makes his triumphant feature film directorial debut with the charming, off-kilter “Submarine.” Based on the novel by John Dunthorne, the coming-of-age tale recounts the adventures of a 15-year-old self-professed genius. Oliver Tate (Craig Roberts) wants to lose his virginity by his next birthday and to repair the widening rift between his parents, recently exacerbated after his mother’s old flame moved into a neighboring house.
Complete with teenage-fueled delusions of grandeur, self-importance and angst, Roberts in his first movie role excels as the film’s fulcrum and centerpiece. His performance and the superior Ayoade script deliver a near-perfect First World vision of a 15-year-old boy’s reality, regardless of country or century.

Pelican Blood, which had its world premiere at the Edinburgh Film Festival, is an interesting attempt at making a film about the life and loves of an obsessive birdwatcher and while they try to make the film as cool and sexy as it can be, I found this film to be an overall disappointment due to a basic premise and having an uninspiring story that does not really offer anything new.
Nikko (Harry Treadaway) is a rebellious young man whose destructive attitude is juxtaposed nicely with his hobby as an obsessive birdwatcher, and during the course of the film we see him managing to cope with his recent suicide attempt and build a relationship with anti-animal cruelty campaigner Stevie (Emma Booth).
