It’s rare for a hit TV show to end quite as definitively as Top Boy. The London-set crime drama finished in September 2023 with a full stop instead of a comma. After five acclaimed series (two on its original Channel 4 home before cancellation and three after its Drake-assisted revival on Netflix) the series came to a close, and fans had to wave goodbye to the Summerhouse Estate.
But not for too long. Soon after the final series concluded, Top Boy creator Ronan Bennett published a tie-in novel Jaq: A Top Boy Story, which is out now in paperback. It’s the story of the Summerhouse gang as told from the perspective of one of its lieutenants who climbed the ranks all the way to a major confrontation with the gang leaders – Jaq, as played by Jasmine Jobson.
On the promotional circuit for the paperback release, Bennett announced that...

Top Boy creator Ronan Bennett is in talks with Netflix over a potential spin-off.
Speaking to the BBC’s Nihal Arthanayake in the past hour, Bennett said the spin-off would focus on the character of Jaq Lawrence, who is played by Jasmine Jobson.
He said he is in conversation with Netflix and production company Cowboy, and that EP Drake is on board.
“We are talking to Netflix about a spin-off, which will be around Jaq,” he said.
Bennett joked that Netflix will “probably be angry with me for mentioning it” and said “I’ve learned through bitter experience not to talk too much about shows that are in the future.”
“You just never know if they’re going to get made,” he added. “And in fact, most shows that are developed actually don’t get made. You can write the script and, for whatever reason, they don’t get made.

Ricky Gervais has stirred up another controversy with a joke in his new Netflix special “Armageddon,” which hasn’t even come out yet.
In a teaser clip released by the comedian, Gervais jokes about terminally ill children, calling them “baldy” and the R-slur. Now, more than 12,000 people have signed a Change.org petition demanding Netflix remove the joke from Gervais’ upcoming stand-up special, which hits the platform on Dec. 25.
Immediately after the controversial “Armageddon” joke, Gervais says to the audience, “These are all jokes, all right? I don’t even use that word in real life, the R-word. … I’m playing a role.”
In an interview with Nihal Arthanayake on BBC Radio 5 Live’s “Headliners” podcast, Gervais called out “faux” outrage against him, and compared the petitioners to “hecklers.”
“I can play to a million people, I won’t get a complaint,” Gervais said. “As soon as it goes on...

Ricky Gervais is responding to critics of material in his latest special, which includes a description of young cancer patients as “baldy,” as well as a derogatory term for having disabilities, saying in a recent interview that they’re “hecklers” who are “faux” offended.
A teaser for the Emmy- and BAFTA-winning comedian’s new show Armageddon, which is set to release Christmas Day, previews a section of his special focused on his work with the Make-a-Wish Foundation. In it, he jokes about how he approaches talking to young cancer patients who request him.
“I’ve been doing video messages recently for terminally ill children — and only if they request it, obviously. I didn’t burst into hospitals and go, ‘Wake up, baldy!’ Watch me twerking on TikTok,'” he said. He adds that Make-a-Wish is “great, and they give these dying kids their like one wish. If it’s me,...

Graham Norton has said that he rejected the chance to “queue jump” the Queen line as he predicted a backlash.
The TV personality said that he was offered the chance to skip the public queue to see the Queen lying in state by a friend, who is an MP, but turned the offer down as he thought he would “get it in the neck”.
Norton also said that This Morning presenters Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, who have been targeted on social media over claims they jumped the public line, “did nothing wrong”.
Programme bosses maintain that the presenting duo were rushed into Westminster Hall as members of the press so they could film a segment for the show.
Speaking about the debate surrounding Schofield and Willoughby, Norton told Nihal Arthanayake on BBC Radio 5 Live: “For instance, recently Phil and Holly and the queue. So as far as I’m concerned they did nothing wrong.
