Edward Berger’s last film, “All Quiet on the Western Front,” won four Academy Awards — including Best International Feature Film — for Netflix. The director’s new epic, “Conclave,” which is set up at Focus Features, may just best that tally.
Attendees at the 2024 CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas got a look at first footage from the film during the Universal Pictures and Focus Features presentation on Wednesday, April 10. A papal thriller starring Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini, “Conclave” is no doubt an Oscar hopeful for Focus given its November 2024 release date. Having seen the trailer only reinforces the awards play. Give the devil its due: “Conclave” looks good.
When the pope dies, “Conclave” scrambles to find God’s new messenger on Earth. The search turns into a holy war that is anything but holy. Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski described the film as a “Machiavellian thriller.

At the time of her untimely death, British author Hilary Mantel was consulting on the TV adaptation of her most recent novel, “The Mirror and the Light” — the conclusion to her critically acclaimed Tudor trilogy that began with “Wolf Hall.”
The two-time Booker Prize-winning author’s sudden death at 70 was announced on Friday by her publishers, sending shockwaves among her fans and the literary and TV industries — but especially her inner circle of collaborators who were in constant touch with Mantel.
Peter Kosminsky, the BAFTA-winning and Emmy-nominated director and screenwriter, has known Mantel for “many, many years,” he told Variety over the phone on Friday. Kosminsky directed the Golden Globe-winning BBC and PBS drama “Wolf Hall,” and the pair have been collaborating more recently on a BBC adaptation of “The Mirror and the Light,” which covers the last four years of the life of Thomas Cromwell (played by Mark Rylance...

This 2011 theatrical remake of John le Carré’s spy classic is a happy surprise — it’s every bit as distinctive and accomplished as the famed Alec Guinness TV miniseries. Swedish director Tomas Alfredson and the writers know how to tell a story — at just over two hours it’s neither bloated nor curtailed. Gary Oldman immediately makes the brilliant George Smiley his own — he’s younger but just as quiet and secretive. Oldman is surrounded by distinctive talent, an ensemble that serves the story: John Hurt, Colin Firth, Toby Jones, Ciarán Hinds, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Strong, Tom Hardy. It’s a delight for mystery-spy fans whether or not they’re familiar with the John le Carré-George Smiley universe.

Tom Hardy is on board to play the title role, and will also produce the pic alongside Dean Baker through their banner Hardy Son & Baker which originated the project.

To the list of great books mangled by Hollywood — F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Tom Wolfe’s The Bonfire of the Vanities, and, Omg, Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged — add Donna Tartt’s The Goldfinch. This cinematic assault on Tartt’s 2014 Pulitzer prize-winning novel would seem to have everything going for it: a classy cast (Nicole Kidman, Ansel Elgort, Luke Wilson, Jeffrey Wright, Sarah Paulson); the acclaimed Irish film and theater director John Crowley, fresh off his Best Picture nominee Brooklyn; Oscar-nominated screenwriter Peter Straughan (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy...

The big problem with “The Goldfinch” — — is that it mistakes its source material for a great work of art. That critical error isn’t an overestimation of Donna Tartt’s blockbuster novel of the same name, so much as it is a categorical mischaracterization. Perhaps even an unavoidable one.
The book, a vivid but ridiculous neo-Dickensian epic that borrows its title from the 17th-century Carel Fabritius painting at its core, is an improbable bildungsroman about the immortality of beautiful objects. Tartt’s novel became controversial among critics in the same way that anything so popular and acclaimed invariably does, but the story’s proximity to the great masterpieces of Western culture left fans convinced that it belonged among them, and inspired detractors to read it for filth.
In truth, “The Goldfinch” probably falls somewhere in between, but the Hollywood adaptation — a gauzy, bloated slab of Oscar bait — was always going to have to pick sides.

“The Goldfinch” is this year’s entry in what has become, by now, a time-honored genre: the high-toned awards-bait literary adaptation that, for all the skill and care and ambition that’s been lavished on it, doesn’t quite work. Watching this faithful-in-a-literal-way yet somehow skittery cinematic transcription of Donna Tartt’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 2013 art-mystery novel, you can tell that the director, John Crowley (“Brooklyn”), and the screenwriter, Peter Straughan (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”), did everything in their power to get the novel up on screen. What cast a winding spell on the page has become an occasionally compelling but mostly labored live-action illustration.
We’ve seen this happen a hundred times before, just about always during awards season. For every adaptation of a relatively recent literary sensation that succeeds in being vibrantly true to the book and, at the same time, emerges as a rich dramatic entity all its own,...

Frontrunners are already forming for the adapted screenplay race, according to early combined predictions at Gold Derby. While most films in contention have not yet been released, enough teaser trailers are out there, ranging from “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” and “The Irishman” to “Little Women” and “Ford v Ferrari” to provide some sense of what at least feels like a worthy contender. We’ve confirmed category placements with studios or campaigners, but — as awards season veterans know — such labels can change later. And once the fall film fests commence, the standings will likely rapidly shift.
Here are the current top 10 adapted screenplay picks on the Gold Derby site, in order, as of Aug. 21:
1. “The Irishman”: Oscar fave Steve Zaillian, who previously worked with director Martin Scorsese on 2002’s “Gangs of New York,” based his script on Charles Brandt’s book, “I Heard You Paint Houses,” about...

‘The Goldfinch’ Trailer: John Crowley Isn’t Skimping on Story in Star-Studded Donna Tartt Adaptation
At the heart of John Crowley’s star-studded Donna Tartt adaptation “The Goldfinch,” there is a terrible, sad, and inventive mystery, the very same one that unfolds over the pages of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Warner Bros. appears to be similarly mining the complex (and quite satisfying) nature of Tartt’s story right down to the film’s trailers, the second of which leans into a different narrative facet than the first look at the awards season player.
For one thing, this new look at the film touts considerably more Nicole Kidman, appearing here as just one of many parental surrogates who attempts to help young Theo through a terrible tragedy. While this new trailer includes brief glimpses of other plotlines on display in earlier peeks at the film, the beefing up of Kidman’s presence helps push a key point about the story: there’s a lot here.

Back on Wednesday morning, a Trailer debuted for what could be one of 2019’s bigger Academy Award players. It was for The Goldfinch, an adaptation of one of the more widely praised novels of the last decade or so. Warner Bros. is certainly bullish on this one, hoping that a fall release suggests future Oscar attention. The movie doesn’t hit until September, so it’s a full three months and change away, but it never hurts to get the ball running on buzz. You can see the Trailer for The Goldfinch below, but first…some discussion is, as always, in order for us! Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel of the same name by Donna Tartt, the film is a prestige laden drama. From Warner Bros. Pictures and Amazon Studios, The Goldfinch is the film adaptation of Donna Tartt’s globally acclaimed best-selling novel, which won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction.
Directed by BAFTA Award winner John Crowley (“Brooklyn”), the film features a multigenerational cast led by Ansel Elgort (“Baby Driver”) as Theo Decker and Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman as Mrs. Barbour.
With a Fall release date, expect an awards season push from Warner Bros.
Theodore “Theo” Decker was 13 years old when his mother was killed in a bombing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The tragedy changes the course of his life, sending him on a stirring odyssey of grief and guilt, reinvention and redemption, and even love. Through it all, he holds on to one tangible piece of hope from that terrible day…a painting of a tiny bird chained to its perch.

The summer movie season also means an early glimpse of some of the fall’s major films and today one of the first trailers from the season has arrived. Warner Bros. had one of the biggest box office hits of last year’s Oscar season with Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut “A Star Is Born,” and the studio is surely hoping to find similar success this fall with the release of “The Goldfinch.” The much-anticipated adaptation of Donna Tartt’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel brings together acclaimed “Brooklyn” director John Crowley with a star-studded ensemble cast that includes Ansel Elgort, Nicole Kidman, Sarah Paulson, Jeffrey Wright, Finn Wolfhard, and “Pete’s Dragon” breakout Oakes Fegley.

It’s not that Donna Tartt’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 2014 novel “The Goldfinch” is unfilmable, but it’s more a question of, well, who would want to? Tartt’s time- and place-spanning epic ostensibly follows one spectacularly ill-fated boy (or is he?) across a tragic childhood and into an adulthood marked by love, loss, and a little bit of classic art theft. It’s wonderful on the page, but it’s also meaty, dense, twisty, and complicated. In short, tough stuff for a 120-minute runtime.
And yet “Brooklyn” and “Boy A” filmmaker John Crowley took on the task of turning it into a feature film, another complex adaptation for a director who excels at them. Bolstered by a script from Peter Straughan and featuring a stacked cast that includes Ansel Elgort as lead Theo, Oakes Fegley as the younger version of him, Sarah Paulson, Nicole Kidman, Finn Wolfhard, Luke Wilson, Aneurin Barnard,...

Chicago – The biggest mystery in “The Snowman” is what in the world talented actors like Michael Fassbender, Chloe Sevigny, Toby Jones, and Val Kilmer are doing here in the first place. Fassbender’s character’s name alone should have sent off alarm bells. This is based on a series of detective novels featuring detective Harry Hole, and characters have voluminous opportunities to repeat it, although with nary a snigger.
Rating: 1.0/5.0
Hole (giggle) is on the trail of a serial killer who strikes at first snowfall and makes a habit of dismembering his victims and turning them into Snowmen. It’s not that disposable pop pulp like this can’t be well made, it’s that it’s rare to see such a cornucopia of awfulness all in one place. Fassbender’s detective is supposed to be one of those brilliant alcoholic legends, but we aren’t treated to much in the way of brilliance.

Most great crime thrillers hook us in with a mystery: who's the killer? The Snowman, released earlier this month to a blizzard of chilly reviews, offers another conundrum that lurks just outside the frame: how did a film with such a sterling pedigree go so bafflingly wrong?
The plot, as laid out in Jo Nesbo's best-selling novel of the same name, sounds like decent fodder for a disturbing thriller in the vein of Seven or The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

The bestseller about a maverick cop on the trail of a serial killer reaches the big screen in a gruesome but watchable adaptation from Tomas Alfredson
Of course it is a letdown to discover that Michael Fassbender is not actually playing the lead in Raymond Briggs’s The Snowman and that he is not, in the words of the song, walking in the air, wearing a white costume and carrot nose, his feet softly pedalling in the magically Christmassy night sky, and his calloused hand in that of a child. In fact, the film he’s in ironically sports with precisely these images of childhood innocence. Fassbender is playing a serial-killer-catching cop in a chilly Scandi procedural, on the trail of a murderer calling himself the Snowman. The officer himself has the borderline ridiculous name of Harry Hole. He is grizzled, alcoholic, rulebook-shredding.

“I apologise for Oslo’s low murder rate,” says a police chief when boozy detective Harry Hole (Michael Fassbender) complains about a lack of satisfying mysteries to solven one bitter winter morning. Fortunately for Hole, the renewed activity of an elusive serial killer soon gives him a case to wrap his big brain around. Unfortunately, the killer also has a macabre interest in Hole’s personal life.
Seemingly triggered by snowfall, a serial killer is kidnapping women across Norway’s cities, leaving their dismembered bodies to be found lying face down in a drift several days later. The killer’s calling card: a snowman in the victim’s front garden, usually oriented to face the house. To crack the case, Hole joins forces with new recruit Katrine Bratt (Rebecca Ferguson...
