Cartoons can be pretty weird, and the Cartoon Network series "Adventure Time" is definitely one of the weirder ones. It follows a human boy named Finn (Jeremy Shada) and his best friend, a dog with silly putty-like characteristics named Jake (John Dimaggio). Created by Pendleton Ward, the series takes place in the post-apocalyptic, magical land of Ooo, full of princesses and monsters and all kinds of wild adventures for Finn and Jake to get up to. It ran for 10 seasons on Cartoon Network before getting spin-offs, won multiple Emmys, and had a huge cultural impact that even served as the "structural godfather" for Donald Glover's surreal FX series "Atlanta."
Back when the series was still in its infancy, however, one of its most important contributors didn't understand "Adventure Time" at all. In an oral history of the series for the LA Times, Dimaggio revealed that he struggled to fully wrap...

Kenny Ortega confirmed there are no immediate plans for Julie and the Phantoms to return to Netflix or anywhere else at this time, but the series executive producer teases, “never say never.”
Created by Dan Cross and David Hoge, the musical dramedy tells the story of a young Latina (Madison Reyes) who leads a band of literal phantoms. The series won three Primetime Emmy Awards for the show’s first and only season.
The cancellation of Julie and the Phantoms was announced in December, more than a year after its debut.
“At this particular time, no,” Ortega told Deadline on Friday about whether the show is being shopped elsewhere. “I’m grateful to Netflix for greenlighting the project and for letting Dan, Dave, and I have this time. I feel it’s some of the best work I’ve done for kids and family,...

The reason behind Netflix's cancellation of Julie and the Phantoms is as mysterious as the show's well-dressed villain.
Why cancel a show with an audience score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes and nearly a million loyal followers on Instagram?
"Fantoms," as the most devoted fans call themselves, are baffled and heartbroken.
From renowned director Kenny Ortega, Julie and the Phantoms follows 15-year-old Julie Molina (Madison Reyes) a year after her mother's death. When she puts on one of her mom's old CDs, she unwittingly releases the three striking members of the band Sunset Curve.
The kicker: they're all dead.
To convince you why Julie and the Phantoms deserves a second season, let's start with why its first season attracted so many to their screens.
There would be no Julie and the Phantoms without, well, Julie and her phantoms. The bond between the titular characters is the show's beating heart.

When “Adventure Time” wrapped its tenth season in 2018, the show ended with a brilliant masterstroke of ambiguity, by acknowledging that everybody dies without dwelling on it. You can’t get much more on-brand than that: Over the course of a decade, human Finn (Jeremy Shada) and his pliable talking dog pal Jake (Joe Maggio) became the centerpiece of a vibrant animated post-apocalyptic backdrop, which used the zany irreverence of its “children’s cartoon” formula to address darker and more sophisticated themes. The final scene suggested that the stories of Finn and Jake will continue to inspire good vibes long after shuffle off the mortal coil that is the Land of Ooo.
At its core, the bond between these two buddies — as Jake matured from adolescence to young adulthood — became credible enough to generate real emotion and intelligence around even the most outrageous of circumstances, and it bled into the rest...

This Adventure Time: Distant Lands review contains no spoilers.
Finn the Human (Jeremy Shada) and Jake the Dog (John Dimaggio) are back together! That is, if Finn can find his trusty stretchy shape-shifting dog pal in territory both familiar and uncharted. Set after the 2018 Adventure Time finale “Come Along with Me,” this is the first Distant Lands post-series special to shine the spotlight on our beloved adventurous boy-and-dog duo. It’s an answer to what happened after their happily-ever-after survival of the Gum War and defeat of Golb.
As the third and penultimate part of the Distant Lands miniseries on HBO Max, “Together Again” opens like the good old days in the oddball land of Ooo: the extreme zoom showing off the oddball-populated breath of the world, the serene ukulele-strumming theme song opening, and an immediate dive into the formula of adventurous weirdity that would make newbie viewers go “Wtf.

Shia Labeouf hasn’t had the best of times in the last few months, and is now reportedly blacklisted in Hollywood due to extensive assault and other abuse allegations that come after multiple problems in recent years. Despite making a recent comeback with Honey Boy and The Peanut Butter Falcon, and being in the running for an McU role, Labeouf’s career now seems to be at a standstill. Still, if you want to hear him as a surfing penguin, his largely forgotten 2007 movie Surf’s Up is currently dominating Netflix.
According to FlixPatrol, Surf’s Up has broken into the Top 10 most-watched films list in the US and is now just behind Hummingbird and Catch Me If You Can in terms of subscriber popularity, sitting at #10. The 2007 CGI comedy features Labeouf and actors such as Jeff Bridges and Zooey Deschanel in a spoof of surf documentaries, with Shia playing Cody Maverick,...

Photo: 'Adventure Time'/HBO Max It was two years ago on September 3, 2018, that Adventure Time aired its final episodes on Cartoon Network. Since it first debuted in 2010, the show would go on to become one of the most popular and influential shows not just on the network but for TV cartoons in general. And despite being aimed at children, over the course of eight years, ten seasons, and 283 episodes it has garnered a huge and devoted adult fanbase thanks to its imaginative visuals, offbeat sense of humor, and genuine depth. The show’s premise is quite simple: set in the post-apocalyptic and magical Land of Ooo, we follow a young human boy named Finn (Jeremy Shada) and his shape-shifting dog, best friend, and adoptive brother Jake (John Dimaggio) as they roam the land in search of adventure, rescue princesses, and just be as helpful as possible to their friends, neighbors and other inhabitants of Ooo.

The premise of Julie and the Phantoms goes like this: a girl who recently lost her mother and her passion for music is surprised by three ghosts who reignite the musician in her, and as a result, they form a band.
Sounds a bit cheesy, right?
Well, it is, but cheesy is just another word for heartwarming and full of hope and inspiration, which is exactly the thing we all need right about now.
Plus the show hails from the genius that is Kenny Ortega, whose movies never fail to make people smile.
Arguably for all ages, Julie and the Phantoms has been a hit with audiences who love the show for not only its music, but for the chemistry between the characters, and the uplifting storylines.
With each episode being around thirty minutes, it's easy to get lost in the music and binge the entire show in one sitting.

Despite the fact that Julie and the Phantoms has been delighting viewers for two weeks now, Netflix still has not declared it renewed for a season two. We can't explain that, but we are here to talk about what might happen in a hypothetical season two—with a little help from the cast. Julie and the Phantoms follows Julie (Madison Reyes), a high school girl grieving the death of her mother, who discovers that her garage used to be the home studio of a band called Sunset Curve. Back in 1995, the band—consisting of Luke (Charlie Gillespie), Reggie (Jeremy Shada) and Alex (Owen Patrick Joyner)—ate some bad hotdogs and all died just before they got to play a major gig at...

Director Kenny Ortega knew he had found the lead for Netflix’s “Julie and the Phantoms” when he saw Madison Reyes’ audition tape after casting directors had put out requests to performing arts schools across North America. Reyes, now 16 but aged 14 at the time of her audition, blew away Ortega with her rendition of a song from the musical “Waitress.”
“I was looking for ‘Julie from the block.’ I wanted something a little more raw, and more authentic and relatable,” Ortega tells Variety. “ turned on her video, and I was bedazzled. I had goosebumps all over my body. I had tears streaming down my cheeks. Her audition was as unique and special as I have ever seen.”
Reyes stars as the titular high school student who forms a band with the ghosts of a former ‘90s pop rock band. The show, streaming now, is based on the Brazilian series “Julie e os Fantasmas....

We're calling it now: Julie and the Phantoms is about to become the next big musical phenomenon. After directing iconic Disney Channel franchises, like High School Musical and Descendants, Kenny Ortega is making musical magic yet again with his latest Netflix project. The series, which is based on the Brazilian series of the same name, follows a young girl named Julie (Madison Reyes) with a passion for singing who ends up befriending a musical group of ghosts. What results is a crazy journey, filled with heartwarming storylines and flashy performances.
While the new series stays true to the original in "spirit and in basic concept," Ortega notes he was given a lot of freedom to make it his own. "The producers of the original Julie e os Fantasmas said, 'Take liberty and have your experience with this title,'" he told Popsugar. "So, we were given a no boundaries kind...

The rules of the “Julie and the Phantoms” world and its omnipresent afterlife are deeply confusing. In 1995, three members of pop-punk band Sunset Curve die suddenly after eating bad hot dogs (yes). In 2020, they reappear in their old studio, find a living friend in astonished teen Julie (Madison Reyes) and discover that when they play with her, the world can not only hear them, but see them until the moment the music ends. “What kind of ghosts are we?!” one asks in thrilled confusion, to which another replies, “who cares!” And honestly, after watching all nine episodes of this first season, I have to agree. No, none of this makes any sense even within the vague guidelines of mystical nonsense, and sure, their ghost adventures become very silly, very quickly. But who cares! “Julie and the Phantoms” is just fun and adorable enough for none of that to really matter.

This review of Julie and the Phantoms contains no spoilers.
Probably the only thing you need to know about Julie and the Phantoms before going in is that its executive producer is Kenny Ortega. If that doesn’t instantly ring a bell – well, he’s the guy who directed the High School Musical movies, the Descendants movies, and, of course, the evergreen Halloween classic Hocus Pocus. This nine-part supernatural teen drama is the first of his projects for Netflix, and it’s just as charming, warm, and finger-snappingly musical as you’d expect.
Julie (newcomer Madison Reyes) is a 15-year-old singer-songwriter who recently lost her mother. Her grief has put a damper on her creativity, and as a result she’s close to getting kicked out of her school’s prestigious music program. Then she meets cute up-and-coming indie rock band Sunset Curve and rediscovers her voice. Her teachers are impressed,...

“Adventure Time” often seemed too good for this world. Over eight years and 10 seasons, Pendleton Ward’s cartoon odyssey was a colorful and quirky celebration of friendship that doubled as post-apocalyptic fantasy. Early on, the show oscillated from silly gags to poignant observations and back again, all while expanding on a rich and expansive mythology with boundless possibilities (at least until Cartoon Network pulled the plug). The extensive 2018 finale put a definitive end point on the exploits of human Jake and his shapeshifting talking dog pal Jake, but “Adventure Time” was always about waking up to a world much larger and sophisticated than any one person can discern. Finn and Jake were just two pieces in a much larger cosmic puzzle.

“Adventure Time,” the beloved and groundbreaking animated series on Cartoon Network, ends its 10-season run Sept. 3 on Cartoon Network. An “Adventure Time” DVD box set will be released on Sept. 4 with Seasons 8 through 10.
That longevity (it debuted in 2010) is a remarkable feat, considering that the series was never meant to appeal to the lowest common denominator with its fantasia of characters, including Jake the Dog, who talks and can morph into almost anything; Marceline the Vampire Queen; Princess Bubblegum; and Lady Rainicorn, a half-rainbow, half-unicorn.
But despite the fantastical elements, the show always delivered genuine emotion.
“Cartoon Network was not afraid to says no,” says series showrunner Adam Muto. “We had to make the case to them. … I remember the early days and how we had to fight.” But Cartoon Network, when they saw the results and resonance of every episode, gave creator Pendleton Ward and his brain trust more freedom.
