With 2013 being the 75th anniversary of Superman and Man of Steel scheduled to come out this summer it was a forgone conclusion DC would release their emblematic direct to home media animated feature this year. DC certainly has been more successful than their marvelous competition at translating their classic stories to this format. Superman: Unbound however, ends up being a mediocre entry for this franchise. With a limited scope and a stereotypical plot it adds nothing to the Superman mythos. It feels less like an extended feature and more like a pilot episode of an upcoming television series. The animation and voice acting are both handled with care, but neither is given that much to work with. The...

Think back to the comedies of the 1990's like Clueless, Reality Bites, Clerks, etc. They had edge. They had bite. They captured the spirit and the essence of the Gen X slacker mentality to the tee. This period of film has been looked upon by fans fondly. There have been films that have tried to capture the essence and the spirit of these films, but too often do these films come across as feeling forced and labored. Enter Washington D.C. based actor Daniel Ross of Ninjas vs. Vampires (starring: Jay Saunders, Cory Okouchi, Carla Okouchi, Devon Marie Burt, Melissa McConnell, P.J. Megaw, Elizabeth Taylor and Kurt Skarstedt and directed by Justine Timpane). This aspiring up and coming presence captures the mentality of the actors of that period and of those films through his performances with such ease and fluidity. Ninjas Vs. Vampires, his latest film, also serves as the perfect showcase for Daniel Ross,...

This week sees a ton of genre movies coming out on DVD and Blu- Ray. The biggest being Predators, followed up by the remake of the cult classic Night of the Demons, a sequel to Mirrors, and Anniversary editions for Rocky Horror Picture Show and Psycho. Add to that a slew of indie and classic horror and there is a lot to choose from.
Predators
Directed by Nimród Antal
Robert Rodriguez presents Predators, a bold new chapter in the Predator universe. Adrien Brody stars as Royce, a mercenary who reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors mysteriously brought together on a jungle planet. But when these cold-blooded human “predators” find themselves in all-out war against a new breed of alien Predators, it’s the ultimate showdown between hunter and prey. Predators also star Laurence Fishburne, Topher Grace, Alice Braga, Walton Goggins, Danny Trejo, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, Oleg Taktarov, and Louis Ozawa Changchien.

The number of home video releases on October 19th is not as abundant as in recent weeks, and fewer re-released titles means those that are available are much more special. In this batch one Adrien Brody flick competes with another, and at least two independent horror titles are making a splash. Two beloved classic films return in Blu-ray where one is supplemented by a documentary treatment of it.
Also, don't forget to strum & drum out with some tunes from Rob Zombie on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Finally, foreign horror gives us an over-the-top Japanese gorefest, a British zombie flick where the $70 budget was spent on tea and biscuits for the zombies, and Norwegian black metal.

You've got to hand it to writer/director Gary Ugarek.
You've got to hand it to writer/director Gary Ugarek. With no traditional schooling in film making or any film making experience, Maryland-based Ugarek has created his own tiny zombie franchise, mainly through keeping his costs low by working with friends and shooting on the weekends so no one has to quit their job.
Ugarek made the first Deadlands movie, Deadlands: The Rising, in 2006 and followed that with Deadlands 2: Trapped in 2008. Deadlands 3, however, is pulling out all the stops by going into pre-production a year before shooting in the spring of 2011 in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Maryland, and working from a script that in its 5th draft and won't be solely Ugarek's work. Ugarek brought in Lonnie Martin to help write Deadlands 3, which was originally going to be the script for Deadlands 2: Trapped, but instead was saved for the end(?) of Ugarek's trilogy.

Wetnwildradio Films announced today that pre-production is slowly beginning on the last entry into the Deadlands zombie film franchise. This third entry will delve into the post apocalypse and follow a small group of survivors who are trying to exist in the zombie infested world.
This final entry was the original sequel to 2006's Deadlands: The Rising, however during re-writes characters from the original Deadlands 1 were replaced with newer characters, but the screenplay retained its original storyline. Gary Ugarek, writer and director of Deadlands 1 & 2, has been joined by Women's Studies scribe Lonnie Martin for this outting.
"I had originally written the screenplay after wrapping Deadlands 1 back in 2006, and I then asked Lonnie, a close friend, to look it over and he asked to join the project and tweak the screenplay, flushing out the characters and adding a few twists of his own. Since Lonnie joined the project in 2007 we have...

A press release came across our desks today that reminded us how often truth is stranger than fiction. Here we were thinking the war between HD DVD and Blu-ray had been decided months ago when WetNWildRadio Films and Anthem Pictures announced that on October 27th the independent zombie horror film Deadlands 2: Trapped will be making its way to ... HD DVD. Kind of ironic that a zombie film would be helping HD DVD try to come back from the dead, no?
When asked why he was releasing the film in this defunct format, Deadlands 2 writer/director Gary Ugarek, an avid HD DVD collector, had this to say:
"Over the last 18 months, since HD DVD's demise, I and a small group of HD DVD enthusiasts have scoured every part of the planet trying to obtain the leftover releases of HD DVD material. We were early adopters of the format and...

Fango recently heard from indie filmmaker Gary Ugarek, who sent along some exclusive stills and behind-the-scenes photos (see them below) from his Maryland/Virginia-lensed Deadlands 2: Trapped, a follow-up to his 2007 flick Deadlands: The Rising. “It has been a long and weird road since we began preproduction, as this was originally supposed to be a short for a project called Zombthology,” Ugarek tells Fango. “Deadlands 2 ultimately grew into a feature film, much like its predecessor; however, it’s really an in-name-only sequel, and was simply titled Trapped during production.”
The location where the movie’s six human survivors hole up when the ghouls overrun the world was a 50,000-square-foot cineplex theater in Hagerstown, MD, where Ugarek (pictured in first photo with actor Frank Collazo) marshalled hundreds of undead bit players along with his main cast and crew. “It was a fun flick to make,” he recalls. “Most indie zombie filmmakers...
