The Hugo Award nominees for the best science fiction of 2014 have been announced. And this year, there’s some major controversy; a number of people have stuffed the ballot box, and oddly, they don’t care who wins.
This takes some explaining, and some wading through muck.
First, let’s talk about Theodore Beale aka Vox Day, a man who was so offensive he was kicked out of the Science Fiction Writers of America and is apparently not smart enough to spell the name of his own blog correctly. He founded his own publishing line, Castalia House, in 2014, and has scored nine nominees on the Hugo nominating ballot this year. Beale was also nominated as Best Editor twice– again, a man who can’t spell his own blog name.
Friends of Beale (using the name “Sad Puppies”) and Beale himself (under the banner of “Rabid Puppies”) set up a coordinated...

For comic book fans of a certain age, few comic book stories are remembered as fondly as Marvel's 1984 mega-hit Secret Wars. A yearlong series that birthed countless Marvel fans, Secret Wars was memorable, even if the story—standard rock 'em, sock 'em stuff—doesn't hold up. Now, thirty years later, Secret Wars is happening again. The news was announced Thursday night at the Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N. exhibit in Times Square at New York Comic-Con. Marvel exec Dan Buckley only had the scantest of details to share: the event will be written by Jonathan Hickman as...

As Lionsgate seeks to put distance between the anti-gay writer and its movie of his novel, the row underlines the need for film-makers to think more deeply about fans' views
They say all publicity is good publicity. If so, studio Lionsgate should be reaping the rewards from all the negative hype whirling around the repugnant views of Orson Scott Card, author of the novel upon which its upcoming science fiction movie Ender's Game is based. Ever since gay rights group Geeks Out launched its campaign for a boycott of Gavin Hood's film, whose stellar cast includes Harrison Ford, Britain's brilliant Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld and Abigail Breslin, the noise surrounding the movie has been firmly about Card's homophobic attitudes rather than the movie itself.
Lionsgate's reaction has been to pretend that Card is a figment of everybody else's imagination, rather than the source of its own worst nightmares. As...

Comic book movies have always been a hot button issue with fans, but opinions are split down the middle when it comes to "Man of Steel." It's not surprising when you consider how important Superman is to so many comic book pros. Superman's been in comics, movies, and television shows since the early 1950s, meaning that generations upon generations have grown up with this character.
But now the film has a 56% on Rotten Tomatoes - the site that measures critics' reviews - and an A- on Cinema Score - which measures moviegoers opinions. People are divided, especially those in the comic book community.
Mark Waid, one of the most prominent and passionate Superman fans working in comics, kicked off a weekend of debate with this Tweet on Thursday night:

With "Man of Steel" opening today in theaters, all attention is currently fixated on Superman. But there's another character that has been by his side for 75 years, who debuted right alongside him in "Action Comics" #1 way back in 1938, and who is incredibly important to the Superman mythos. That character is Lois Lane, the fearless reporter whose human courage inspires even Earth's powerful alien protector. The legendary character is brought to life in the new film by Amy Adams, who inherited her press pass from Kate Bosworth, Erica Durance, Dana Delaney, Teri Hatcher, Margot Kidder, Phyllis Coates and Noel Neill, among others.
But when you're paired up with a man who can punch mountains, you're bound to get overlooked. We're here to make sure that doesn't happen. Without Lois Lane, there is no Superman. To give the character some much deserved attention, we approached a panel of comic creators,...

"X-Men: Days of Future Past" has added another new actor to its cast. The latest addition is Adan Canto, who can currently be seen on the Fox drama "The Following." Canto is the latest in a string of exciting new cast members, including Peter Dinklage, Omar Sy, Fan Bingbing and Booboo Stewart.
The reveal came following a trip to a hockey game, where director Bryan Singer and actors Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and Shawn Ashmore were joined by Canto. The crew all had matching hockey jerseys too, proving that when the X-Men go out on the town, they go out in style. Check out the full tweet and photo below.

Angry Asian Man has been covering the racist casting of and boycotts of The Last Airbender movie and rounding up links. I think this one from Racalicious about "race bending" is a good overview of the controversy though I have two nitpicky responses that have nothing to do with race.
It's not accurate to claim that Hollywood clings to a "mindset from the 30s" when it comes to pleasing the male demographic. Hollywood was just as interested in women in the 30s. The 'please the boys at all costs / ignore everyone else' mandate isn't really unmistakable in cinema until the modern blockbuster era.
Though it's true that race is a trickier subject than gender, the statement that it's "easy" to combat media driven gender stereotypes is not accurate at all. Those media messages are still pervasive and confusing in 2010 and still shape people's ideas about what's of value (men and their p.

Vatican Hustle
Greg Houston
Nbm, December 2009, $11.95
There are stories that are inextricably mixed up with their original media, stories that would make very little sense translated into another form. Imagine a Gothic Romance novel as a puppet show, or a John Wayne Western as an opera. Until the moment I opened this book, I thought “Blaxploitation movie as a comic” was another example.
(I’m not completely sure I’ve been convinced otherwise, either.)
Vatican Hustle is a Blaxploitation movie done as a comic – when it’s not being a parody of a Blaxploitation movie, or vaguely wandering off into Chester Gould territory, or just being terrifically proud with and impressed by itself. If the art style – fairly well described by the publisher as “a hilarious mash-up of Ralph Steadman, Basil Wolverton and Chester Gould’s bad guys,” though that misses Kevin O’Neill, whom I’d list first and...

B.P.R.D. Vol. 10: The Warning
Written by Mike Mignola and John Arcudi; Art by Guy Davis
Dark Horse Comics, May 2009, $17.95
The Warning is the tenth volume collecting the adventures of the Hellboy-less Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, and the first in what the creators are calling the “Scorched Earth Trilogy.” The afterword by co-writer John Arcudi claims that events will get bigger and more dangerous from here – though he does note that this volume includes, among other thing, “[name withheld] gets kidnapped, … entire fleet of helicopters gets wiped out, and gigantic robots trample [name withheld] into rubble.” And previous volumes of this series (and, of course, of the related Hellboy) have been no slouch in the near-Armageddon sweepstakes – particularly The Black Flame. That’s a lot of promise, but Mignola’s fictional world does always teeter on the verge of utter supernatural chaos, in his very Lovecraftian way. It...

We weren't going to make a big fuss about it as certain people in the company are touchy about their own impending decrepitude, but since ComicMix reviewer Andrew Wheeler outed himself on his personal blog:
Today is the 40th birthday of the man who hides behind the very thin mask of "G.B.H. Hornswoggler," and it wouldn't be blogging if I didn't crow loudly about pointless personal minutia. No congratulations are necessary; all I did was manage not to die for another 365 days. (And I hope to keep that streak up for a long time to come.)
So: I am now officially old, and will soon be sitting in a folding chair next to the highway, shaking my cane at passing cars and hollering at the local kids to stay off my lawn. I hope to look more and more like a George Booth cartoon as time goes on; every man needs a hobby.

Now that the 2009 Eisner Award nominations are out, we'd like to again congratulate all of the nominees-- but we'd like to also take a moment of your time and explain why we aren't among them.
It's really simple-- we didn't submit anything for the Eisner nominations this year.
This probably comes as a surprise to a number of our fans, and certainly all of the talented folks that work for us and created award worthy pieces. No, we didn't even submit Ez Street, even though it got a Harvey nomination for 2008 as Best Online Comic.
The reason is shown in the photo to the right of the Eisner judges. See the big guy with the glasses on the far right? That's Andrew Wheeler. He does a lot of reviewing for us here at ComicMix, and we've paid him for them. Filthy lucre has changed hands.

As the Society noms continue to roll in, the latest comes from the Visual Effects Society as they announce their nominees for the 7th Annual Ves Awards, a ceremony recognizing outstanding visual effects in over a dozen categories of film, animation, television, commercials and video games. Of course all I really care about are the film noms, but you can check out the full list of nominees by downloading the Pdf press release right here. Iron Man led the way with five nominations and is competing with The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Hellboy II: The Golden Army and Cloverfield in the Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects Driven Motion Picture category, the category probably deemed the highest profile of the bunch and it went to Transformers last year only to see The Golden Compass pull out a surprise win at the Oscars.

Tampa Bay or Boston? Who will make the World Series this year? Clearly by the law of "they deserve it" it ought to be the Rays' year, but even Yankees fans have to admire the way the Red Sox came back from that 7-0 deficit in Game 5. Congratulations to ComicMIx's own Matt Raub for making it through 24 consecutive hours of movie-watching! He's probably still sleeping as we write this. I'd hate to think of what he's dreaming about. It could be worse, he could have watched 24 hours of presidential and VP candidate debates. Meanwhile, here's what our columnists have brought you this past week:

Well, tomorrow's equinox marks the actual onset of autumn, but tonight's the Emmy Awards marking the official changing of the TV season. More or less. With staggered season openers depending on which network you're talking about, how you watch your shows (webisodes? DVR pile-up?), the idea of a TV season is in flux, but you can always count on ComicMix to feature geek-oriented show reviews as well as our usual columns and features. Here's what we've had for you this past week::

As we bid goodbye to August and so much more, we mark endings and new beginnings. Our production head and cofounder Glenn Hauman returns with not one but two installments of his way-too-occasional column, our news editor Bob Greenberger's been posting up a storm, and it's rumored that ComicMix has some interesting things coming down the pike, but I couldn't possibly say. I just do a column and these roundups:
Mike Gold - Brainiac On Banjo: Let's Go Raise Us Some Dumb Kids Dennis O'Neil - The Four-Color Answer: Heroic Gloom Glenn Hauman - Above and Beyond: Twenty years as a utility infielder Alan Kistler - ComicMix Six: Batman's Super-Powers Me - It's All Good: Truthiness in Advertising John Ostrander - Tales From The O-zone: Given You A Number Michael Davis - Straight, No Chaser: If You're Not There, You Just Won't Get It - Conclusion Andrew Wheeler -...
