Rounding up the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood, as voted on by hundreds of film executives, The Black List has been a strong resource to clue one in on projects to potentially anticipate, but first, to kickstart Hollywood on bringing them to screen. Today we have this year’s edition, as voted on by over 300 film executives.
Topping the 2022 edition is Catherine Schetina’s Pure, with a logline as follows: “Obsessed with food purity, Hannah’s trip to her sister’s destination wedding descends into madness when she contracts a mysterious foodborne illness that threatens to destroy her from within.”
Other scripts feature a look at the employees of Four Seasons Total Landscaping on November 7, 2020, the makings of It’s a Wonderful Life and the Madden videogame, a dark comedy about the Hindenburg Disaster, biopics on Dolly Parton, Michael Phelps, and Jerry Springer, and quite a heaping of sci-fi stories.

Founded by Franklin Leonard, the list surveys 300 studio executives who weigh in with the strongest screenplays to have crossed their desks over the year. An individual script must be mentioned at least six times to warrant inclusion. The year’s most popular is “Pure,” a psychological thriller that would set Gwyneth Paltrow on edge.

The Hunt for Planet B is an evocative documentary about something everyone has pondered at one time or another: is there another evolved planet beyond our galaxy? The James Webb Space Telescope may provide that answer when it finally launches after several delays. Down here on Earth 1, director Nathaniel Kahn’s documentary chronicles the work of a thousand scientists, explorers, and engineers working on the most complex telescope in NASA’s history at the Goddard Space Flight Center.
The analogy often given regarding the sensitivity and specificity of the telescope is that it is able to detect a child’s night light from millions of miles away or the movement of a window blind in an illuminated sky scraper to the millimeter. Kahn’s broad mosaic begins with the defense of science as one of the film’s subjects, Sara Seager, explains to a Congressional committee why it is...

Distilling down the complex logistics of designing and building a multi-billion dollar satellite into an informative and entertaining film, Nathaniel Kahn’s “The Hunt for Planet B” is a entertaining and insightful look at the creation of the James Webb Space Telescope, set to launch later this year, and the scientists and engineers who contributed to it. Foregrounding the contributions of many women to the process, including MIT Professor Sara Seagar, Webb Engineer Amy Lo, Astronomer Maggie Turbull and Jill Tarter, who served as the inspiration for Ellie Arroway from the novel and film “Contact,” Kahn’s film oscillates between providing an overview of exoplanets, planets outside of our solar system that possibly sustain life, and the massive process of putting the Webb telescope together.

The James Webb Space Telescope hasn’t generated as many headlines as climate change activism or another relief bill, but its planned launch in October 2021 could yield even greater long-term impact. After nearly 15 years of turnaround, the promising Hubble replacement will peer out at ancient galaxies and stars, possibly uncovering distant planets hospitable to life in process. Director Nathaniel Kahn’s “The Hunt for Planet B” puts that perspective in a much broader context than the bureaucracy responsible for grounding the Webb telescope all these years, showing how its success could galvanize a community of passionate stargazers and eventually change our relationship to the universe itself.
Kahn, who previously directed the 2016 short “Into the Unknown” about the team behind the telescope, has expanded that project into . Kahn’s earnest overview is not always the sum of its parts: It lacks the awe-inspiring production values that make “Cosmos” so fun and...

Here’s part two of Amy Lo’s Sundance Creative Producer’s Lab Diary. Part One can be read here. Back in New York, a director I’d just met the other day told me, “You’re really nice for a producer.” Have we sunk so low? He was surprised that I was…nice? In fact, at the Sundance Creative Producing Summit, there was nothing but niceness all around. It began on Friday; specifically, after lunch. Pre-lunch, we were still ensconced in our intimate, small-group sessions for the Feature Film Creative Producing Lab, which had started five days prior. The Summit, in its second year, would be three more days on the mountain, but instead of us five Fellows being the center of attention, there would be a broader agenda examining...

Here is the first of two filmmaker reports filed from the just-finished Sundance Producer’s Lab. Reporting back here is Amy Lo. The Sundance Lab was my rehab. In the most transformative, astonishing way. Here we are, Day One, four fellow Fellows and me gathered up from parts east, west and south, hurtling up the hill, forward-pressing and fueled by anxious hope. We come to a sudden stop, a moment to inhale and exhale. High-elevation, low-oxygen. Rising disorientation. The Sundance Creative Producing Lab spans five days of project-focused tough love, naked honesty, catharsis and renewal. All framed by breath-taking mountainous isolation. (And near-zero cell phone reception, itself a wondrous thing.) I came to this mountain...

The Sundance Institute announced a series of initiatives designed to support independent producers in feature film and documentary. There are some familiar names being included among the participants. We have Kyle Martin (see pic), who we featured in our American New Wave 25 profiles, we have Adele Romanski who produced The Myth of the American Sleepover, and for those who read Filmmaker Magazine or have seen Tiny Furniture might recognize the name of Alicia Van Couvering. Here is the entire press release below: The Feature Film Creative Producing Lab, a five-day Lab for narrative feature film producers, which takes place at Sundance Resort, Utah. The Lab is designed to develop a producer's creative instincts in all...

Screen Gems has tapped Benson Lee to adapt his award-winning breakdancing documentary "Planet B-Boy" into a feature to be produced by Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson of Contrafilm.
The 2007 documentary focused on the international world of B-boying, commonly known in the U.S. as breakdancing. Although the urban dance waned in popularity stateside after peaking in the 1980s, it has evolved and thrived in countries including Japan, South Korea, France and Germany, where in underground form it became more aggressive and athletic. "Bionic b-boying" is how Lee described it.
The doc followed dancers from several continents, culminating in a competition between crews from 18 nations vying for title of world champion at the annual Battle of the Year finals in Berlin.
The new "B-Boy" will tell the story of a legendary b-boy crew that must return to its roots to reclaim the world championship by competing against the top international breakdancing teams.

Breakdancing, the 1980s urban performance phenomenon that went from the streets of New York to mainstream TV and the stages of America's cultural landmarks, faded from the U.S. scene with the turn of the decade. But rather than disappearing altogether, the pastime migrated overseas, gaining popularity in Europe, Asia and South America.
Filmmaker Benson Lee catches up with breakdancing's ongoing evolution in Planet B-Boy, an eye-catching combination of cultural history, performer profiles and competition footage that should see enthusiastic response from niche audiences in urban and specialty venues before comfortably kickin' it on DVD.
In an efficient setup, several veteran breakdancers -- known as B-boys -- explain that breaking is a legitimate dance form that comprises one of the four pillars of hip-hop culture, along with DJ-ing, rapping and graffiti art. A mix of energetic dance moves, gymnastic techniques and referential styles derived from movies and martial arts, breakdancing displays an exhilarating blend of athleticism and artistry set to hip-hop beats.
German B-boy and promoter Thomas Hergenrother describes how youth worldwide were inspired by the exploits of their American heroes and developed their own dance routines during the '90s, prompting him to establish the international Battle of the Year, held annually in Germany.
Lee then segues to presenting the four principal "crews" profiled in the film -- Knucklehead Zoo (U.S.), Ichigeki (Japan), Last for One (South Korea) and Phase T (France) -- characterizing their performance techniques using informal rehearsal footage and interviews with individual members.
At the film's midpoint, the four teams converge at the Battle of the Year after winning their respective national championships. Extended breakdancing scenes showcase each group's individual style as they compete for a spot in the final competitions leading to the top prizes.
Combining performance footage, first-person interviews and archival materials, Planet B-Boy pays fitting homage to both breakers' impressive dance skills and the roots of hip-hop culture. Agile camerawork propels the narrative at a brisk pace, and crisp editing synchs rhythmically with the score's propulsive beat.

BUSAN, South Korea -- The Korean-America project "The Hanji Box" is set to become the first co-production funded by the Seoul Film Commission's Film Production Support Program, the project's producers and the Commission told The Hollywood Reporter on Friday.
Producers Jane Applegate and Amy Lo said that Korean stars Kim Yun-jin ("Lost") and Baek Yoon-shik ("Tazza: God of Gamblers") are set to join Amy Irving in what they called a "reverse adoption" story.
Written and directed by Nora Jacobson, "Hanji Box" is the story of a heartbroken painter (Irving) who journeys to Korea in an attempt to reconnect with her estranged Korean-adoptee daughter. While in Korea, she hires an interpreter (Kim) and falls in love with a local artist (Baek).
In addition, the film featured production design by one of Korea's most in-demand talents, Cho Keun-hyun ("A Tale of Two Sisters").
Earlier this year, the Seoul Film Commission announced the Film Production Support Program, which offers grants of up to 25% of the production budget (to a maximum of $100,000) on foreign films shot in Seoul.
