Warning: This article contains spoilers from last night's ITV episode of Downton Abbey.
Downton Abbey went all John Hurt in Alien last night as Hugh Bonneville's Robert shocked everyone by choking up blood and spoiling the upholstery.
The Earl of Grantham is currently resting in hospital, but the bloody moment was certainly out of character for Downton. Actor Michael Fox - who plays footman Andy - was as shocked as anyone.
He told ITV's This Morning: "It was pretty graphic! Someone spilt the coulis!
"Filming it was pretty graphic, Hugh was so good at it because we only had one take because they couldn't reset the tables and stuff and his shirt, and the distance it travelled was slightly further than Elizabeth [McGovern] was expecting... we had to keep going."
He added: "When you see the [fake] blood, blood drains out of your face - well, I do, I feel quite...

Downton Abbey actor Michael Fox has promised fans that the drama will "go out with a bang", and to expect "a few shocks" along the way.
The actor - who plays footman Andy in the ITV series - told Digital Spy that viewers should be happy with the way the show ends at Christmas.
"Lots of the characters that we've loved over the six years have been tied up in not always the way you'd hope or assume," he told us. "Julian [Fellowes] has put a few shocks in there.
"The final episode particularly, even reading the script was very moving. You could feel the momentum building to the final couple of scenes. I think people will love it, it does go out with a bang.
"People who have been going on the journey for six years - as I was - watching it, characters you know and love and want things for,...

Armstrong will play Stowell, the butler of Lady Rose's husband Atticus Aldridge and his family, while Lapotaire stars as the much-discussed Princess Irina, the lost wife of Prince Kuragin (played by Rade Sherbedgia).

It soon becomes apparent that butler Stowell has a serious axe to grind, while a scandalous secret threatens to ruin the holiday for everybody.

Canadian director Jason Eisener is creating a new genre with his latest film, Hobo with a Shotgun. This violence-ploitation film now has a red band trailer, which is even more bloody than the one seen here (feature trailer Hwas). There are similarities between both of these film reels, but this latest one shows the demise of Santa Claus via shotgun blast and midnight robberies. This most recent clip also shows an ultra-bloody death by digger and Rutger Hauer, as the hobo, acting heroic, with a manhole cover wrapped around his neck, in comic fashion. Watch the gratuitous violence below, with this title releasing on video-on-demand April 1st and in theatres May 5th, through Magnolia Pictures.
The synopsis for Hobo with a Shotgun:
"A vigilante homeless man pulls into a new city and finds himself trapped in urban chaos, a city where crime rules and where the city's crime boss reigns.
