Viewers first became acquainted with the isolated horrors of John Carpenter's The Thing when it was released in 1982, but the story upon which it is based had already been in publication for over 40 years. Initially printed in Astounding Science Fiction in 1938, John W. Campbell Jr.'s Who Goes There? served as the basis for Carpenter's classic horror film (as well as 1951's The Thing from Another World), and a novel-length version of Campbell's story was recently discovered, prompting a Kickstarter campaign for the publication of his classic story in its fullest edition, titled Frozen Hell.
Due out in early 2019 from Wildside Press, the publication of the hardcover and paperback editions of Frozen Hell can be supported on the book's official Kickstarter page. In addition to an expanded backstory, Frozen Hell will include an introduction by Robert Silverberg, a preview of John Gregory Betancourt's upcoming book sequel to The Thing story,...

Who are you and what do you do?”
I am Bob Eggleton multi-Hugo Award winning artist (Forry won the first one many years ago so there is a lineage), and recently a Rondo Award winner (for FM covers) who has been in the Sf/Fantasy field for over 30 years. I do lots of things: my own ideas, bookcovers, comics, and I have worked as a movie concept artist on several animated films and, I’m a huge Godzilla and Classic Monster fan.
What mediums are you most fond of working with?
I play with all media. Oils are really nice with painting, though I work in acrylics and, my most basic but favored medium is the pencil. I love pencil.
What inspires you the most?
Many things. Nature, dinosaurs, space….classical artists work, like what you see in a museum.
What/who is your favorite artwork/artist?
Wow. I could...

The man behind the Godzilla: Generations Covers is FM-favorite artist Bob Eggleton—multiple Hugo Award winner, Chesley Award recipient, and all-around awesome dude who is an endless source of creativity and monsters. We sat down with him at Big Wow! In San Jose to chat mythology and giant reptiles .
Famous Monsters. As a painter primarily of things that don’t actually exist, how do you reference them? Is it all your imagination, or do you derive things from existing animals like snakes and lizards?
Bob Eggleton. I do look at existing snakes and reptiles. Form is going to follow function wherever you are, even if you’re on another planet or in some mythical realm. Muscles will work like muscles; arms will work like arms. It’s just a matter of physics and biology. Especially if the creature is created for its environment. Something that is, say, in a lighter...

Rather than giving you yet another typical online critic’s opinion, FM has decided to bring you its verdict on the new Godzilla movie by transcribing the opinions of four more qualified individuals: Godzilla art guru Bob Eggleton, Heisei Godzilla-suit-wearer Kenpachiro Satsuma, original Ultraman Satoshi “Bin” Furuya, and tokusatsu hero of Kikaida and Inazuman Daisuke Ban. The following Q&A session took place after a special screening of Godzilla in San Jose at Big Wow! ComicFest, with kaiju expert August Ragone moderating, on May 17.
August Ragone. So why don’t you tell us what you thought of the film?
Bob Eggleton. It kicked ass. The funniest thing is that when I saw Gareth Edwards’ directorial debut called Monsters, I turned to my wife and said, this guy should direct Godzilla. If there is some justice in making another Godzilla movie, get Gareth Edwards. And I could not believe it...

The lingering memory of my year of blogging for the Sfbc — which ended five years ago, so I really should be over it by this point — still compels me to post SFnal awards, even when I do so far too late to benefit anyone. What can I say? I’m a flawed person.
Anyway, here’s some recent awards that you probably already know about:
2011 Aurealis Awards
The Australian national awards for Sf and other imaginative literature were given out three weeks ago (I know, I know!), and the full list has been available since then.
Here’s the novel-length awards, just because:
Young Adult Novel: Only Ever Always, by Penni Russon Fantasy Novel: Ember and Ash, by Pamela Freeman Science Fiction Novel: The Courier’s New Bicycle, by Kim Westwood
(via Sf Signal)
Analog and Asimov’s Reader’s Awards
The same weekend as the Nebulas (suddenly suspicious — did I blog about the Nebulas?...

Press Release:
DreamHaven Books is proud to announce the first U.S. Publication of Vargo Statten’s 1954 novelization of Creature from the Black Lagoon. For more than 57 years, Creature fans in the United States have been vying for copies of the original printing, recently paying prices ranging from $1,000 to $6,000 in the collector’s market. This rare book was first published in a trade hardcover and paperback by a small English publisher, Dragon Books. Due to the popularity of the movie and its author, copies sold out quickly, and were never reprinted.
In 2011, Garcia Publishing Services’ Robert Garcia brought the idea to reprint the novel to DreamHaven Books owner Greg Ketter, who immediately signed on to publish it. A longtime fan of Universal Monsters, Ketter struck a deal with Universal Partnerships & Licensing to put out a new edition of the novel, with a few extras.
