Every month there always seems to be a new horror anthology released and Tales From the Other Side is one of the latest. A very low budget one but that is something I’m used to and anthology horror is something I generally enjoy so I was happy to give this a go.
Featuring one wraparound segment and six ‘tales’ there’s plenty to see here. So let’s get straight into the first proper tale. ‘Petrified Boy’ at least starts off with some kind of creepy story about a touring circus and its main attraction – the petrified boy. The problem is the...

Lucas Heyne’s feature debut Mope is based on the lurid case of aspirant porn star Stephen Hill (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett) and his best friend, whose porn name was Tom Dong (Kelly Sry). In 2010, Hill went on a rampage with a machete, a story is told in this La Weekly story from 2011, forming the basis for this porn-milieu drama. Heyne called on his friend Kern Saxton to edit. Via email, Saxton described the challenges of cutting down two and a half hours, filmed in an improvisatory style, into a tight 105 minutes. Lucas Heyne’s feature directing debut Mope will have its world premiere later this month in the Midnight section of the Sundance Film Festival. Deadline has the first look at the movie co-written by Zack Newkirk and Heyne and produced by Parkside Pictures in association with Saxton Cinema & Uncooperative Pictures.
The drama is based on the true story of a real-life murder in 2010 at a San Fernando Valley porn company. That’s where Stephen Clancy Hill, a mope (slang for a wannabe porn star), who was living in the company’s warehouse at the time, went on a rampage with a sword when he was told he was fired. He eventually killed his friend and fellow mope Herbert Wong, who tried to intervene when Hill was attacking two others. Hill was killed in a standoff with police five days later.

“Straight Outta Compton” just got a significantly less gangster trailer. YouTube user Kern Saxton recut scenes from the blockbuster biopic to make a 4-minute trailer set to Ben Folds’ cover of Dr. Dre‘s “Bitches Ain’t Shit,” a track from the rapper’s first solo album, “The Chronic.” The song attacks N.W.A. member Eazy-e for favoring “white bitch” manager Jerry Heller over the other artists in the iconic rap group. Sushi Girl is a delicious film; it perfectly shows why independent cinema is where my heart lies. The film is unusual, it's raw, it's funny, it's gory and it is a damn good time. My experience with watching this film is possibly the most unique one I have ever had.
I met some of the cast Noah Hathaway, James Duval and Andy Mackenzie and the director Kern Saxton at Supanova Expo, after chatting to them I made the promise I'd watch the film that night and return the next day to discuss it. So the very next day I got to discuss the film with those guys again, and also Tony Todd. What a thrill that was, chances like that don't come by often. It was a real pleasure to tell them all I loved the film, nothing beats the smiles and energy that comes with that.

Welcome back to This Week In Discs! As always, if you see something you like, click on the image to buy it. Sushi Girl Fish has just been released from jail, and four ex-friends are extremely happy to see him. He served six years for a robbery they all took part in, and now they want to know what happened to the diamonds they stole. The five men sit down for dinner, sushi served off the body of a naked woman, but soon the evening evolves into a torture session as Fish continues to play dumb about the whereabouts of the gems. Director Kern Saxton‘s film is essentially a single-location thriller that succeeds due to some sharp writing, fun performances and grisly practical effects. The titular character (Cortney Palm) is also pretty damn nice. The cast is a who’s who of B-movie actors including Mark Hamill and Tony Todd with cameo appearances by Michael Biehn, Danny Trejo...

"...'Fish' has spent six years in jail. Six years alone. Six years keeping his mouth shut about the robbery, about the other men involved. The night he is released, the four men he protected with silence celebrate his freedom with a congratulatory dinner.
"The meal is a lavish array of sushi, served off the naked body of a beautiful woman. The sushi girl seems catatonic, trained to ignore everything in the room, even if things become dangerous.
"Then, sure enough, the four unwieldy thieves can't help but bring up old grudges in an attempt to find their missing loot..."

Director Kern Saxton’s crime/thriller “Sushi Girl” has been on my must-see list all year. However, my busy schedule as of late has prevented me from checking it out on VOD. If I do nothing else over the holiday, I am going to sit back, relax, and give this intriguing slice of cinema its proper day in court. After all, how can you possibly go wrong with Sonny Chiba, Jeff Fahey, and Danny Trejo? Let not be so quick to answer that particular question in public. Anyway, here’s what the film is reportedly about: The film centers on the compelling character of a man called “Fish,” just released after six years in jail after successfully not ratting on those involved in the robbery that sent him to prison. The night he is released, the men he protected with silence celebrate his freedom with a congratulatory dinner. The meal...

'Sushi Girl' Director Kern Saxton Reasonably Confronts Pirates On Torrent Site Downloading His Movie
The discourse around piracy thus far hasn't exactly been nuanced, with copyright holders pushing harder than ever to impose harsh penalities for anyone who downloads music or movies. All this while ignoring data that suggests that, in some instances, piracy can act as promotion for a film: with those hearing chatter about the movie choosing to seek it out, often by buying a ticket or a DVD. The argument could go round and round forever, but there's at least one director out there who has approached the whole thing quite reasonably. Kern Saxton, the man behind the low budget crime flick "Sushi Girl" featuring Mark Hamill, Michael Biehn, Danny Trejo and Jeff Fahey among others, surfed over to a torrent site recently and confronted those who were making the movie available to download. And his reaction? Pretty level headed. He basically says that while he appreciates the attention they are giving his film,...

While sci-fi geeks everywhere salivate in anticipation for the return of Luke Skywalker and company in Star Wars: Episode VII , actor Mark Hamill is giving his acting chops a workout in the meaty role of Crow, the maddest member of a gang of ill-fated jewel thieves in first-time feature filmmaker Kern Saxton's Sushi Girl , now available on VOD. ComingSoon.net caught up with Hamill at the film's world premiere in Hollywood last night, and he shared his thoughts on playing a crazed killer and the continuation of George Lucas's film saga. ComingSoon.net: You've played the wittily psychotic Joker for a number of years. What did you draw on to distinguish your character in Sushi Girl . the wisecracking maniac Crow? Kern Saxton made his directorial debut with a horrific thriller entitled Sushi Girl starring Tony Todd and Mark Hamill, which will have its VOD release on November 27 followed by a limited theatrical run and DVD/Blu-Ray release early in 2013.
Saxton sat down with Dread Central to talk about making this memorable film.
Saxton was asked to describe Sushi Girl (review) for those yet to see the film. "Is it cheesy to say, thrills, chills, suspense, blood and gore?" Saxton joked. "It's interesting because it's a hard film to classify. It's a blend of so many things. We really straddled the line between thriller and horror. It's not truly a horror film, but it does trend that way enough to keep horror fans satisfied. I think that's one of the concepts we had in mind originally to net a broader audience. I never thought I would ever write the following words: Sushi Girl successfully achieves what countless filmmakers have desperately tried to do over the past decade: offer moviegoers the post-millennial equivalent of Quentin Tarantino's debut, Reservoir Dogs. Now, don't get me wrong. The film isn't a rip-off or a satire. It isn't the typical "let's try to do our own version/something as cool" flick that so many directors desperately trying to become the "new Tarantino" have offered us. Sushi Girl is different, and what sets it apart is the fact that it feels genuine. It doesn't try to mimic; instead, it is its own entity, in which you can clearly feel the influence of Tarantino's 1992 classic.

Ricky D, Michael Ryan and Edgar Chaput are quite familiar with the Fantasia Film Festival, having attended the event for years (some of us since the very beginning); so we thought it would be wise to list our favorite films from the 2012 line up. Enjoy!
Edgar Chaput’s Top 3
3-Game of Werewolves (2012, Juan Martinez Moreno)
A review for this film has already has already been published (link here), but the short version is that director Martinez Moreno and his stellar cast deliver one of the most engaging, hysterical, action packed and wonderfully shot werewolf movies in years. Not this Wolf has a film involving these nightmarish hunters been so entertaining. Its greatest flaw is the script, which makes some bizarre decisions as to character motivations, yet any qualms about why certain people are doing what are squashed by the joy out of seeing Moreno’s interpretation of the universe of lycanthropy…...

We are now a week into the three week long Fantasia Film Festival, and while we admittedly have been a little behind due to some technical issues with our website, we still managed to get a dozen film reviews published. Keep coming back to our site as we promise twice the amount of articles by the end of week two. In the meantime, here is a round-up of what we’ve seen and written about so far.

Comedy, in its nature and its presentation, has morphed dramatically over the past decade or so, both in North America and in Europe, in particular the United Kingdom. From the more overt, on the nose comedy of yesteryear we have now live in an era in which the comedy is delivered with a completely different version of wit.

Sushi Girl
Written by Kern Saxton and Destin Pfaff
Directed by Kern Saxton
USA 2012 Fantasia imdb
I saw Sushi Girl under almost perfect conditions: at the Fantasia Film Festival surrounded by more than 700 enthusiastic grindhouse film fans in the presence of the producer, director, writer and virtually the entire cast including Andy MacKenzie (Shoot ‘Em Up), James Duval (Donnie Darko), Noah Hathaway (Atreyu from The NeverEnding Story!), Michael Biehn (!!), Tony Todd (!!!), and Mark Hamill (Not! Enough! Exclamation! Marks! In! The! World!).
How crowded was the theatre? Former Fangoria editor (and longtime friend of Fantasia) Tony Timpone was asking people in the theatre to put their hands up if the seat next to them was vacant, so we could squeeze more people in.
What we saw was a film that is completely unapologetic about its influences and its existence as a artifact of almost pure fan service beginning with its insane cast.

An adolescent’s sixteenth birthday marks a turning point in life when maturation occurs at a much more rapid pace and the teenager begins to be faced with difficult and important decisions that will shape their future. The same can be said of Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival, set to kick off its sixteenth edition tomorrow: its Super Sweet Sixteen promises to be nothing if not interesting. That’s not to say that the main focus of North America’s largest genre film festival is changing; in fact, between prolific director Takashi Miike’s festival opener For Love’s Sake – fresh from Cannes and having its North American premiere – and the Canadian premiere of animation studio Laika’s Paranorman, which closes the fest three weeks later, filmgoers will have a whopping 160 films from around the world to choose from. Sitges eat your heart out.

The 16th annual Fantasia International Film Festival is gearing up to take Montreal by storm with three weeks of inspiration and thrills starting July 19, 2012. The full 2012 line-up of programming and special events will be revealed next month but here’s an early peek of several selected highlights and info to whet your appetite. Fantasia Loves Jennifer Lynch : From the day she exploded onto the scene with the largely misunderstood and still-controversial Boxing Helena nineteen years ago, Jennifer Lynch has been a spellbinding iconoclast on the American indie landscape, her provocative approach to filmmaking seeing her alternately championed and demonized. She is a fascinating filmmaker who has made but several works across her near-twenty year career. Each have been standouts, their connective tissues threaded in baroque aesthetics, unconventional performance styles, darkly eccentric streaks of humour and subversively compelling gazes into our capacities for cruelty, obsession and sexual deviancy. This year,...

Towards the beginning of June, a friend of mine brought director Kern Saxton’s potentially badass crime/thriller “Sushi Girl” to my cinema-sickened attention. Not only does it sport a fantastic cast — Tony Todd, Danny Trejo, James Duval, Tony Todd, Mark Hamill, Michael Biehn, Jeff Fahey, and Sonny Chiba(!!!) all have a part to play — the flick also marks the feature-length return of “NeverEnding Story” star Noah Hathaway. That, of course, is reason for excitement. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find very much information about the movie save for a handful of festival dates. Given the amount of talent on-board, the lack of buzz was very strange. Thankfully, the wise, indie-minded folks over at Magnolia Pictures are scheduled to bring “Sushi Girl” to DVD and Blu-ray this fall. As far as special features go, I don’t have anything specific to report just yet. To be honest, I’m just happy it’s getting released.

A friend of mine brought director Kern Saxton’s action/thriller “Sushi Girl” to my attention upon discovering that it featured “The NeverEnding Story” star Noah Hathaway, a guy who hasn’t been in anything since 1994. Being a fan of both “The NeverEnding Story” and “Troll”, I was naturally excited. However, my excitement soon mutated into unbridled nerd glee upon learning that Danny Trejo, James Duval, Tony Todd, Mark Hamill, Michael Biehn, Jeff Fahey, and Sonny Chiba were also in the movie. Yes, that’s right — Sonny Chiba. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t heard of this flick. My mind was completely boggled. Outside of a few articles from 2011 and a Twitter page that enjoys sporadic updates, there really isn’t a lot of information floating around out there about the picture. For the life of me, I can’t understand why. “Sushi Girl” sports one hell of a cast,...

He's long been attached as director to a developing project called Eerie, Pa, but Final Destination and Candyman star Tony Todd will finally make his debut behind the camera with Catalytic. In true renaissance man fashion, he's also written the screenplay.Catalytic's set-up is clearly the result of a good time being had by all on Sushi Girl, in which Todd co-stars with Mark Hamill, Michael Biehn, Jeff Fahey, Danny Trejo and Sonny Chibah, and which he confided to Empire recently is "the best work of my life". Sushi Girl comes courtesy of Assembly Line pictures, and its producer roster of Destin Pfaff, Neal Fischer, Kern Saxton and Suren M Seron will also be behind Catalytic. The blurb so far is that the film "follows a magician as he embarks on a road trip during an impending supernatural apocalypse."The news of Todd's impending new career comes only a day...

The trailer for first-time director Kern Saxton’s revenge flick Sushi Girl has debuted online (via YouTube), though you might have missed it in the afterglow of one Comic-Con.
When a group of thieves meet six years after a successful jewel heist, their celebrations are short-lived; any remaining amiability goes out the warehouse window when the whereabouts of the hidden stash come into question.
The film certainly looks great, with a knock out cast including Tony Todd (Candyman), Michael Biehn (The Terminator), Jeff Fahey (TV’s Lost), Danny Trejo (Predators), Sonny Chiba (The Street Fighter) and Mark Hamill (like you don’t know!) as its resident nasties; it’s almost The Expendables for genre buffs.
Currently unrated and without a release date, Todd suggested in an interview with Empire that a Spring 2012 release looks most likely.

On this week's episode of Junk Food Dinner we talk about the upcoming film Sushi Girl from relative newcomer Kern Saxton.
The stylized crime drama features a veritable who's who of cult favorites including Tony Todd (Candyman, Platoon), Mark Hamill (Star Wars), James Duval (Nowhere, Donnie Darko), Michael Biehn (The Terminator, Aliens), Noah Hathaway (The Neverending Story, Troll) Sonny Chiba (The Streetfighter) and Danny Trejo (Machete). With a cast like that, how could you resist?!
Here's the film's official synopsis:
Fish has spent six years in jail. Six years alone. Six years keeping his mouth shut about the robbery, about the other men involved. The night he is released, the four men he protected with silence celebrate his freedom with a congratulatory dinner. The meal is a lavish array of sushi, served off the naked body of a beautiful young woman. The sushi girl seems catatonic, trained to ignore everything in the room,...

Last week I learned about a little film that stars some very big genre names. Mark Hamill, Danny Trejo, Michael Biehn, Jeff Fahey, Tony Todd, and… Sonny Chiba? Now that's a cast that would make any genre fan's mouth water. Even more so when one learns these guys are starring in a grindhouse-style sleaze fest about a gang of crooks who reunite years after a botched robbery to eat sushi off the body of a beautiful naked girl (played by Cortney Palm). Last week I joined FEARnet's equally lovely Natalie Pohorski at the Hollywood wrap party for one of the coolest-sounding films to hit our radar.
