Berlin-winning Argentine helmer Ariel Rotter debuts his latest feature “A Blue Bird” (“Un Pájaro Azul”) to Spanish audiences in Málaga this week, the film screening in a particularly robust out-of-competition 19 title lineup that include Benito Zembrano’s “Jumping the Fence” and Morena Films-backed “Puntos Suspensivos,” from David Marqués.
Produced by Argentina’s Tarea Fina, behind “Sublime” and Cannes Camera d’Or winner “Las Acacias,” alongside Uruguay’s Montelona Cine (“Nunchaku”), the film follows Javier (Alfonso Tort) and his partner Valeria (Julieta Zylberberg), as they navigate their exhausting six-year battle to conceive a child.
Scenes sit still, sometimes in silence between the pair as they embrace, breathe, sigh, indicative of the love poured into their struggle.
“In the years that my partner and I spent trying to become parents, we went through periods of great uncertainty that strengthened us and wore us down at the same time. The feeling of those years is reflected,...

Featuring famed directors such as Argentina’s Ariel Rotter and Spain’s Benito Zambrano, who have not only played but won at Berlin and San Sebastian respectively, Malaga’s 19-pic out of competition strand is a testament to the buyer-driven pulling power of Malaga , thanks to its significant market.
Multiple other name auteurs pack out the selection, which also includes a far stronger line is broad audience comedies than most festivals would risk.
This is certainly territory for discoveries and breakouts – a healthy Málaga tradition.
A brief drill down on titles:

“La Bandera,” produced by Álamo Producciones Audiovisuales and Idesia Films, humorously unfolds a family’s inheritance dispute, in the sense that sons, Aitor Luna and Miquel Fernández, aren’t getting what they expected from their father played by Spanish veteran actor Imanol Arias.

Politics in Argentina are volatile. The 20th century brought six coups and restrictions on democracy were not lifted until 1983. Daniela Goggi’s (“Abzurdah”) latest “The Rescue” (“El Rapto”) is set in this transitional period, where a hangover of deep corruption still remains.
It stars “Money Heist’s” Rodrigo de la Serna, hit Paramount+ Nov. 3 and now plays in main competition at the Huelva Ibero-American Film Festival.
Produced by Paramount Television International Studios, Rei Cine (“The Settlers”) and Infinity Hill, it shows Paramount’s continued global ambitions in Spanish-language originals.
“At our studio, we always seek to create high-quality content with great partners and remarkable talent, in front of and behind the camera, to create local stories with universal appeal that will cross borders and conquer global audiences,” said Dario Turovelzky, EVP Broadcast & Studios at Latam Paramount Global.
“‘El Rapto’ (‘The Rescue’) is an outstanding example of this ongoing creative pursuit.

The episode features:Rodrigo Sepúlveda (Chile), a writer, director and producer. Sepúlveda directed successful television productions in the ’80s and ’90s, but it wasn’t until 2002 that he made his feature-film debut. Since then, he has cultivated a humanist filmography that examines love and family ties, as well as the prejudices of Chilean society. In 2020, his film My Tender Matador (Tengo miedo, torero) premiered in Venice's parallel section, Giornate degli Autori. A successful adaptation of Pedro Lemebel's novel, the film stars Alfredo Castro in one of his most brilliant and memorable performances. Julieta Zylberberg (Argentina), an actress who has worked for over twenty years in film, series, television and theater. She made her film debut in The Holy Girl (La niña santa), Lucrecia Martel's second feature film. With sobriety and forcefulness, Zylberberg has played characters that reflect great ambiguity. The Sissy Spacek and J.K. Simmons-starring sci-fi series Night Sky has been canceled by Amazon’s Prime Video after just one season. As reported by Deadline, the cancelation comes just a month and a half after the eight-episode first season debuted on the streamer. Despite positive reviews from critics, the series did not reach a high enough viewership to justify its expensive budget. Created by Holden Miller and Daniel C. Connolly, Night Sky revolves around married couple Franklin (Simmons) and Irene York (Spacek), who discover a portal in their backyard that leads to a deserted planet. However, their carefully guarded secret is upended when an enigmatic young man (Chai Hansen) enters the scene, revealing that the portal is much more than the Yorks ever imagined. In addition to Spacek and Simmons, the show also starred Kiah McKirnan, Beth Lacke, Julieta Zylberberg, Rocío Hernández, Stephen Louis Grush, Sonya Walger, Angus O’Brian,...

Amazon Prime Video has canceled “Night Sky,” its science-fiction series starring Sissy Spacek and J.K. Simmons. Amazon Studios and Legendary Television co-produced the series’ first season.
The decision to not move forward with another installment comes about six weeks after the first season premiered all eight of its episodes on the streamer May 20.
“Night Sky” follows Irene (Spacek) and Franklin (Simmons), who once stumbled upon a portal to an alien planet. The couple’s fairly quiet life together is upended when new parties attempt to interrogate them about the mysterious gateway and the world beyond it.
Notably, Amazon Prime Video leaned into the science-fiction premise of the series by launching a marketing strategy involving beaming the first episode of “Night Sky” into outer space, avoiding satellites that would send the broadcast back to Earth. The company described the decision to send “Night Sky” to the night sky as “the farthest...

Exclusive: Amazon’s Prime Video is not proceeding with a second season of its sci-fi series Night Sky, starring Oscar winners Sissy Spacek and J.K. Simmons. The news comes a month and a half after all eight Season 1 episodes of the drama, co-produced by Amazon Studios and Legendary Television, were released May 20.
Launching to largely positive reviews, the series did not make a significant viewership impact while carrying sizable costs tied to its sci-fi content. But regardless of the cancellation, Night Sky already has secured its place in TV history.
Prime Video, in conjunction with Amazon Web Services, Ses, and Intelsat, beamed the show’s first episode into outer space, marking the farthest distance from earth that a TV series has been distributed and making Prime Video the first streamer to distribute its content directly into space.

This review is spoiler-free for Night Sky.
Several characters in Prime Video’s Night Sky awaken to the idea that something is missing in their lives, something to make them feel special. Even the elderly couple Franklin (Jk Simmons) and Irene (Sissy Spacek) who have kept secret a portal to another planet under their shed struggle to glean its purpose. The show, then, has the same thematic dilemma of finding its hook beyond the Lost-like puzzle box narrative: why should we care about the stranger who shows up in the couple’s lives (Chai Hansen) and what effect he has on them?
Most of the characters in Night Sky have a lot of inertia to overcome, and as a result, the first few episodes take awhile to gain momentum. A tragedy in Frank and Irene’s past has contributed to their reclusiveness and declining health through sheer inactivity. The couple...

The first episode of “Night Sky” offers nearly enough precision in its pathos to exist unto itself. Franklin (J.K. Simmons) and Irene York (Sissy Spacek) are an aging couple living just outside the (fictional) small town of Farnsworth, Il. Irene, a retired English teacher, isn’t letting her declining health affect her good humor, and Franklin enjoys taking care of her, Over their many years together, he’s adjusted his bad habits to better her life. “Son of a swine herd” are the first words out of Franklin’s mouth, as he habitually checks his language to appease his wife’s distaste for swearing. She still corrects his grammar. He smiles when she does.
Their loving rapport extends to what at first appears a simple late-night request from Irene: Tonight, she wants to “see the stars.” Franklin, while less eager, agrees, and helps Irene get situated in her wheelchair, guides her outside,...

Perhaps it’s unsurprising that Amazon is all in on clunky technological metaphors.
Following in the wake of 2020’s “Tales From the Loop,” about people living near a futuristic physics lab, and this year’s “Outer Range,” about a void or portal appearing on a rancher’s property, comes “Night Sky,” about a couple who possess a chamber capable of taking them to another planet. While it’s likely not useful to see all of Amazon Prime Video’s television properties as extensions of company founder Jeff Bezos’ will, there’s something very tidy at work here — the man does, after all, undertake short space voyages, making the fact that his company produces television about the mysteries and wonder of the cosmos feel marginally more revealing or intriguing.

It’s hard to go wrong when you cast a pair of Oscar winners in what Night Sky showrunner Daniel C. Connolly calls “a hopeful combination of enduring love story and magical adventure.” The series centers on Irene and Franklin York (Sissy Spacek and J.K. Simmons), a retired Midwestern couple with a big secret: There’s a space “chamber” in their yard that can transport them to a distant planet. (Credit: Prime Video) But the discovery of an injured young man (Chai Hansen) outside the chamber alters their quiet lives. Also set to create another wrinkle in time for the couple: the appearance of an Argentinian mother (Julieta Zylberberg) and daughter (Rocio Hernández) with their own chamber. Still, this entertaining flight of fancy remains grounded by its stars. Says Connolly, “There’s a relatability to this couple that’s powerful.” Night Sky, Original Series Premiere, Friday, May 20, Prime Video...

"You ready to make history?" "You say that every time." Amazon has revealed the first official trailer for a fascinating sci-fi series called Night Sky, arriving on Prime Video later in May this summer. This looks pretty damn good! "I need to see where all this leads." The series introduces us to Franklin and Irene York, a couple who years ago discovered a chamber buried in their backyard with a portal which inexplicably takes them to a strange, deserted planet. Everything seems to be going okay as they've kept it a secret, but things change when they consider telling others. Then all of a sudden a strange man named Jude shows up. Sissy Spacek & J.K. Simmons star as the lovely couple, with a cast including Chai Hansen, Adam Bartley, Julieta Zylberberg, Rocío Hernández, and Kiah McKirnan. I just hope the twist in this isn't that it's actually all fake and they fell for it.

Lacke will portray the role of Chandra, a former student of lead protagonist Irene York (Sissy Spacek) who is dissatisfied with her job as a caregiver at a local nursing home and with life in general. A chance encounter with her teacher sends Chandra in a new direction.
Grush’s character Nick is described as a socially awkward loner who operates the family drapery business and who boasts his own strange charisma. He’s eager to impress, and often finds himself on the wrong side of bad situations. Nick has an unexpected connection to Stella (Julieta Zylberberg).
Jeanine, played by Buggé, has been married to Byron (Adam Bartley) for seven years and is newly arrived in Farnsworth.

"He's going to break your heart, but that's what friend are for." Freestyle Digital Media has debuted a new US trailer for a Chilean indie film titled My Tender Matador, also known as Tengo Miedo Torero in Spanish. This originally premiered in the Venice Days sidebar at the Venice Film Festival last year. Amid the political turmoil during 1980s in Chile, a lonely transvestite engages in a risky clandestine operation after falling in love with a guerrilla who asks her to hide dangerous secrets of the revolution at home. Based on the groundbreaking novel by queer icon Pedro Lemebel, the film received positive reviews praising the lead performances: "Castro and Ortizgris work wonderfully together, their rapport an easy one, the truth of their potential relationship less important than the bonhomie they share." Starring Alfredo Castro, Leonardo Ortizgris, and Julieta Zylberberg. This looks quite unique, capturing the intricacies of Chile in the 80s.

"Is his life at risk without the bubble?" LuxBox debuted a fest promo trailer for The Dog Who Wouldn't Be Quiet, an Argentinian drama that just premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival and next stops by the Rotterdam Film Festival. This wacky B&w drama is described as "a fable that is at once impressionistic and immediate." Sebastian, a man in his thirties, works a of temporary jobs and he embraces love at every opportunity. He transforms, through a series of encounters, as the world flirts with apocalypse. Sundance adds: "Rebelling against traditional plot & structure, Katz draws insight into what acceptance and humility look like in an increasingly chaotic world. The result is a bewitching work that 'hits different' in these perplexing times." Starring Daniel Katz, Julieta Zylberberg, Valeria Lois, Mirella Pascual, Carlos Portaluppi. The film is just premiering and likely won't be released for a while, but check out the footage.

The enigma, at the beginning, is that the dog makes no noise. Unless you count the tinkling of his bone-shaped name-tag as he snuffles doggishly around the yard. Neighbors come by, politely, to complain about his whimpering, and his owner acknowledges the problem apologetically, but if he’s noisy, it happens offscreen. It’s that way with a lot of the inferred noise in Argentinian director Ana Katz’s sixth, shortest and strangest film, “The Dog Who Wouldn’t Be Quiet,” a tiny, monochrome miracle of a movie that gives you years of life and change and mystery in 73 calm minutes.
The approach is so unassuming it takes a moment to appreciate the boldness. Shot over the course of several years, as attested to by its roster of five cinematographers who somehow deliver a consistently lovely aesthetic, the film covers a span of time even longer. It presents details so small they belong under a microscope,...

This year, because Sundance is a virtual festival operating in the midst of the coronavirus, there’s a tendency to label any depiction of isolation and mass hysteria as a “pandemic movie.” It’s not exactly a spoiler to say The Dog Who Wouldn’t Be Quiet matches that criteria. During one stretch of director Ana Katz’s impressionistic slice of Argentinian life, an ambiguous airborne disease forces the population to wear oxygen helmets. Anyone that doesn’t have access to one of these astronaut devices must keep their head no higher than four feet from the ground. Many crawl, squat and duck their way through offices and city streets. It’s a masked, paranoid existence that appears both familiar and otherworldly.
And yet, unlike some recent entries in this quickly re-emerging genre, The Dog Who Wouldn’t Be Quiet seems more acutely aware of how living through a pandemic feels than how it looks.

The Buenos Aires born Ana Katz began her feature filmography with Musical Chairs (2002), Un Certain Regard selected A Stray Girlfriend (2007), 2011 Los Marziano, Sundance winner My Friend from the Park (2015) and finally the big winner at Karlovy Vary Florianópolis Dream before hitting El Perro que No Calla – a black & white micro project featuring Daniel Katz, Carlos Portaluppi, Facundo Gambandé, Mirella Pascual, Valeria Lois and one of our faves in the versatile Julieta Zylberberg.

Argentina’s StoryLab and Telecom SVOD platform Flow have announced that the country’s first new post-covid 19 series, “Post Mortem,” will be available to stream on Oct. 8.
Starring Julieta Zylberberg (“Wild Tales”), Esteban Pérez and Alejandro Awada (“Nine Queens”), “Post Mortem” is created and produced by Nacho Viale and Diego Palacio for StoryLab in co-production with TECtv, the channel of Argentina’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. Palacio directs the screenplays written by Lucas Molteni and Luciana Porchietto.
“’Post Mortem’ is a strong bet by StoryLab, and we are proud to be able to launch a fiction series of this quality at a time and in a place where we badly need to tell new stories and see actors back on screen. This was a great team effort that we can now celebrate together with Flow,” said Palacio.

Among the many praiseworthy qualities of “My Tender Matador,” the most notable is its honesty. It would have been so easy for the film, about a transgender woman in Pinochet’s Chile and her relationship with a straight political activist, to have overplayed its hand with ill-judged sentiment or sensationalism, but instead director Rodrigo Sepúlveda Urzúa guides everything just right, from the refusal to treat anyone with less than full respect to the superb ensemble, and from Sergio Armstrong’s carefully calibrated camerawork to the thoughtful understanding of how daylight changes a person who’s lived fullest under the protection of the night. Based on the groundbreaking novel by queer icon Pedro Lemebel, the film deserves better treatment than most international gay-themed dramas get.

After receiving a call at work that her son has suffered a severe playground accident, a cash-strapped single mother in Sante Fe, Argentina, criss-crosses an unsympathetic city in search of the hospital where he’s been taken, all the while trying to keep her own surging asthma attack under control. A trim, taut second feature from writer-director Arturo Castro Godoy, “Breathe” doesn’t quite take place in real time, though it may as well: As much as cinema loves a ticking clock, in our moments of most feverish panic, doesn’t time lose all rational shape anyway? In any event, Godoy’s film is less concerned with cranking up the thriller mechanics than with conjuring a very believable aura of panic that many a parent will recognize from their nightmares — sustained by a performance of nails-dug-deep conviction by Julieta Zylberberg.

For a story where faith plays a pivotal role, it’s appropriate that two of the pivotal characters in “The Tenth Man” are perpetually off-screen. Just as writer/director Daniel Burman asks us to understand people and ideas we cannot see, the story of a middle-aged Jewish man’s Buenos Aires homecoming becomes defined by what keeps its attention. Focusing on the personal, it keeps its scope small, to mostly compelling effect.

Writer-director Daniel Burman (The Lost Embrace, The Mystery of Happiness) is continuing his combination of drama and comedy with The Tenth Man, a story about a son returning to see his father after years of estrangement. In the process, he reconnects with his Jewish roots and grapples with “notions of identity, home, and the father-son relationship.”
The Argentine drama, which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and Kino Lorber picked it up for a release this July. The trailer demonstrates the blending of compositional styles between an almost cinéma vérité approach and more austere, static wide shots that suggests the film will mesh the subjective and objective. See the full trailer below for the film starring Alan Sabbagh and Julieta Zylberberg.

Argentine director Daniel Burman will premiere his latest work "The Tenth Man" (El rey del Once) as part of the Berlinale's Panorama section on February 12, 2016. Burman's previous directorial effort "The Mystery of Happiness" became a local box-office success when it opened in Argentina back in 2014 and was distributed in the U.S. by Strand Releasing.
"The Tenth Man" stars Julieta Zylberberg and Alan Sabbagh. International sales are being handled by FilmSharks International. U.S. Rights are still available.
The official synopsis reads as follows:
Ari, who has built a successful career in New York, thinks he has left his past behind. But his distant father Usher who runs a Jewish aid foundation in El Once, the close-knit old Jewish neighborhood of Buenos Aires, summons him back to his native city.
