Protests interrupted the show at the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards this afternoon.
Chants could be heard from outside the venue on Sunday afternoon (February 25) at the Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica, Calif.
While Jim Gaffigan was on stage to present the award for Best Ensemble Cast in a New Scripted Series to the cast of Jury Duty, screams could be heard and they were so loud it seemed like they were possibly inside the room.

Reports from the show reveal that there are chants of “Free Palestine” and “Free Gaza” outside of the tent at the pier. It appears to be from a single protestor with a bullhorn playing a recording. The chants have been continuing for at least 10 minutes and still have not stopped.

Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail has assembled an impressive cast for his thriller Leave the World Behind that includes Julia Roberts (Homecoming), Ethan Hawke (The Black Phone), and Mahershala Ali (True Detective). Netflix will be giving the film a limited theatrical release on November 22nd, with the streaming release to follow on December 8th – but a premiere screening was recently held, and the embargo on reactions has been lifted. Judging by the first reactions that have made their way online, it looks like Leave the World Behind might make for a divisive viewing experience.
First, we have a few positive reactions that describe the film as “wildly riveting and entertaining” and “absolutely amazing”, saying it has a “smart script”:
Welp, I’m going to be obsessed with #LeaveTheWorldBehind. (Or I guess I already am?) What a uniquely and expertly crafted and photographed disaster/apocalyptic story. (I absolutely must read the book now.

Striking writers now have a new punching bag: Bob Iger.
After telling CNBC’s David Faber Thursday that the labor situation is “very disturbing” and how the Hollywood unions aren’t being realistic about the current financial climate, WGA picketers went postal on social media by pointing out the massive pay disparity between the Disney CEO and most working writers today.
In a lengthy sit-down with CNBC from Sun Valley, Idaho, Iger addressed the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes and his ongoing feud with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Though his digs at DeSantis were lauded — he called the governor’s claims that Disney is sexualizing children “preposterous and inaccurate”— he lost the Tinseltown rank and file when he said “this is the worst time in the world” to walk off the job.
“I understand any labor organization’s desire to work on behalf of its members to get the most compensation...

Exclusive: This Joka, a stand-up comedy series exec produced by Will Smith, will not be returning for a second season on Roku.
The streaming service launched the series, which came via its acquisition of short-form service Quibi, in March.
The series features a raft of stand ups including Punkie Johnson and Chris Estrada.
Deadline understands that the decision had nothing to do with the Oscars incident, where Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage, but a somewhat unusual issue with timing.
Roku is believed to never really have had the option to renew the series, which is produced by Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Westbrook Studios and Topgolf Entertainment Group. The option to renew lapsed before Roku launched the show, and certainly before the streamer had the chance to analyse its viewing data, meaning that it was unlikely to return for a second season on the platform.

In a normal year, the UK film biz would have woken up today with a sore head and a vague recollection of boogying into the early hours alongside celebrating BAFTA winners and commiserating BAFTA nominees.
Instead, the vast majority of us were to be found on our sofas last night, watching a succint two-hour BBC broadcast of the country’s premium film awards ceremony. It was a night of highs – supporting actress winner Yuh-Jung Youn calling the Brits “snobbish” in her acceptance speech and doubling down in the press conference after – and no real notable lows, unless you have a particular aversion to One Direction alum Liam Payne.
Overall, the ceremony, produced in the most difficult of circumstances, ran just about as smoothly as could be expected. The recording only took place three hours prior to the broadcast on BBC One, giving the American nominees and presenters, appearing virtually, a chance to get dolled up.

I had the pleasure of recording not one, not two, but three podcasts this week. Yes, The Film Experience's own podcast returns very soon (hopefully tomorrow). But before that's edited, please enjoy these two guest-spots I had the pleasure to do.
This Had Oscar Buzz
Joe Reid and Chris Feil, former Team Experience members!, launched this brilliant podcast in 2018. You're probably already a fan. "This Had Oscar Buzz" discusses one failed awards hopeful per episode. They gave me a list of films to choose from for my guest spot and perusing it I knew exactly which film I had to choose. The very blonde, very actressy, very complicated, very Pfeifferiffic White Oleander (2002) called out to me. Please give it a listen!
Chasing The Gold
You can also hear me discussing the brand new Oscar nominations on InSessionFilm's podcast hosted by Ryan McQuade. Erik Anderson of Awards Watch...

James Corden’s casting in “The Prom” has come under fire by several film critics and entertainment journalists now that Netflix has screened the star-studded musical for press. Corden stars in the film as Broadway actor Barry Glickman, played on stage by Brooks Ashmanskas in a Tony-nominated performance. Barry is a flamboyant and openly gay Broadway diva, which has led some press to question why Corden was cast in the role.
“Opinions differ on how acceptable it is for straight actors to play gay roles, but few straight actors could get away with a gay character like this, a role that would feel stereotypical in an ’80s sitcom and here feels offensive,” writes Newsweek critic Samuel Spencer, who notes Corden is “offensively miscast” in the role.
“After all, it is not like we have a shortage of actual gay actors who could give the role more pathos,” Spencer adds. “Was Titus Burgess busy?...

Marking his follow-up to The Witch and The Lighthouse, Robert Eggers was just one week from beginning production on his most ambitious movie yet, The Northman, before Covid-19 hit. The Viking drama is set to star both Alexander and Bill Skarsgård, as well as Nicole Kidman and Claes Bang, and there’s also two reunions for Eggers: The Witch star Anya Taylor-Joy along with The Lighthouse‘s Willem Dafoe. Now that production is gearing back up, we’ve got a few more additions to the cast.
As revealed in a social media post from a trainer working on the film (sorry buddy––hope you still have the gig), none other the otherworldly Björk herself will be playing a character named The Slav Witch. If that wasn’t enough to get excited about, Björk and Matthew Barney’s daughter Ísadóra Bjarkardóttir Barney will also be part of the ensemble along with The Witch star Kate Dickie.
