The writers and actors strike is getting a boost from the comics world and a new superhero named General Strike.
Indie publisher Black Mask Studios, run by Matteo Pizzolo, is putting together a comics anthology that will be written by WGA members with the company matching the writers’ fees with donations to the safety net organization Entertainment Community Fund.
The announcement comes as the writers strike hits its 100th day. No new contract talks are scheduled to begin any time soon.
Titled General Stike: Calexit and Other Tales of Fighting the Good Fight, the collection of new stories has the theme of confronting economic inequality and, like any good superhero story, featuring new characters fighting the good fight against injustice. A bubblegum-chewing, labor-organizing character named General Strike will act as the host of the comic, threading the stories together.
The book is in pre-launch mode on Kickstarter now, with an official launch set for Aug.

Chuck D has spent the last four decades shining a light on American injustice with Public Enemy. Now he is expanding his platform.
A new triptych he illustrated for the cover of the first issue of comic book Rogue State depicts gun-toting Maga supporters, pregnant women suffering after the Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade, and gun-toting fundamentalists executing homeless people while getting marketed to. The bottom of each panel contains a theme: “dirty water,” “food shortage,” and “homelessness.” The centerpiece of the marker-and-watercolor panels will come out on Nov.

Young Terrorists #1

Make no mistake, Young Terrorists #1 is a tough pill to swallow. And it’s meant to be. At 80 pages, it is also quite the horse pill, but that too is with good reason. Writer Matt Pizzolo, in an afterwordwhere he first shares a personal horror story regarding an occasion on which he came under attack from Big Government, says, “These days, I can’t look at news scares that go viral, public humiliations, and even some social media memes without wondering who is behind them … does the money track back to Big Pharma, arms manufacturers, massive agribusinesses? … House Of Cards’ Remy Danton is the new Smoking Man and he’s more terrifying because he’s real … I love a good revenge story. Usually revenge stories are about hunting down some crime family or street gang.

Description: Mali and Tessa have lived hundreds of different lives throughout time, caught up in an eternal cycle as they take part in a war so old that neither side remembers what they’re fighting for anymore. As Mali wakes up in her newest life, she suddenly becomes self-aware and starts to question everything, especially why she continues to fight. But elsewhere, Tessa is already on the hunt…
Our Take: I have joked in the past about changing the name of this column to “Sebelaworld” and at this point I’ve stopped finding that funny. I mean, it’s his fault for always writing stories that just fit perfectly into the Destroy The Brain niche but I mean I could just not talk about his books. So how about artist Jon Sawyer?...

Black Mask Studios is bringing more comics-focused entertainment to YouTube. The media and publication company has launched its own official YouTube channel, and is working on releasing five new original web series in the near future.
Black Mask was founded in 2012 by filmmaker Matt Pizzolo, Epitaph Records founder Brett Gurewitz, and horror writer Steve Niles. The three founders were inspired to start Black Mask by the “Occupy Comics” project, which aimed to raise money through comics to support the Occupy Wall Street movement.
“It put a light on how difficult it was to get out comics with a message in them,” Pizzolo said to The New York Times.
And Black Mask’s upcoming web series certainly have unique messages in them. Liberator, for example, is a story about vigilante animal welfare activists, and Five Ghosts follows an adventurer who is possessed by five literary characters. The upcoming projects are either...

Godkiller is a debut comic that is almost crushed into oblivion by its own ambitious world-building. It’s a high-concept, post-apocalyptic, cyberpunk cornucopia of cultural rebellion, whose first half runs dangerously close to losing itself in its own set-up before giving the latter portion of the story over to a sympathetic orphaned kid who does a perfect job of shrinking Matt Pizzolo’s dark pop grandeur into bite-sized chunks. According to Pizzolo, Godkiller’s theme centers on the war between religion and mythology—and you know that no book with a concept that big is going to be an easy read.

The name "Godkiller" should ring a bell as we've been talking about the transmedia series of graphic novels, illustrated films, and novels for about five years, and now it's entering yet another phase as an indie weekly comic.
From the Press Release:
Black Mask Studios, the creator-supporting comics publisher founded by Brett Gurewitz (Bad Religion, Epitaph Records, Anti- Records), Matt Pizzolo (founder Occupy Comics, Halo-8), and Steve Niles (30 Days Of Night), is launching its first weekly comic book series as Pizzolo brings his beloved modern classic sci-horror franchise Godkiller to comic book stores for the first time.
"I think we've all gotten used to a binge diet for episodic stories. Personally, I can barely handle waiting a week between episodes of 'Boardwalk Empire'; a month or more between comics sometimes feels like the decade-long wait for another Game of Thrones book," explained Pizzolo, "so I'm hopeful a weekly schedule might...

Steve Niles, Matt Pizzolo, and Brett Gurewitz are getting into the comic book publishing game with the new comic book company, Black Mask Studios.
They want the label to be indicative of their punk roots, and put the onus on the creators.
Pizzolo: “Comics has a troubled history with its treatment of creators…our goal is to bring the supportive ethic of record labels like Epitaph, Dischord, and Revelation to comics.” Niles: “Brett, Matt, and I all came up in the Diy punk scene…And we’re bringing that kind of attitude to this… the constructive part about supporting voices who are talking about real things but in a bold and exciting way. We’re not afraid to bring in activism and politics and counterculture. What publisher today could be bringing out the next V For Vendetta? Nobody.“

Another day, another schedule for the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con. Next up is Day 3 - Saturday, July 14th - which is just about as chock-full of events for the horror crowd as Friday the 13th!
As always, our focus is the horror panels, but included are a few others that we think will be of interest as well. Remember that times and participants are subject to change so keep your eyes on the official Sdcc site for updates. And hopefully they'll provide a fix soon for the Sdcc smartphone app - in years past it's been extremely helpful.
10:00-11:00 Comic-Con How-To: Anatomy of a Fight Scene, Part One— Stories are about conflict, and there is no purer form of conflict than a good ol' fisticuffs-style brawl-or sword fight, laser battle, western shootout, or even two chicks pulling each other's hair. 30 Days of Night writer Steve Niles and Epitaph Records CEO/Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz are joining Halo-8 president/Godkiller writer Matt Pizzolo to form new comics outfit Black Mask Studios with the aim of disrupting the comics market.
From the Press Release:
Niles (pictured) will serve as creative director with Pizzolo as president, and Gurewitz's Epitaph Records will power the operation.
"Comics have become this monopolized walled garden where you're only allowed to grow two things: superheroes and movie treatments," said Pizzolo. "With both Godkiller and 30 Days of Night, we discovered a large community of readers outside the comic market who really had no idea how to get comics," said Niles. "This is a way to reach those people again and expand the comic reading audience.

At any given moment in the nebulous world of big studio film production there are as many phantoms floating around as there are solid movies made. Regardless of whether these loosely connected collections of ideas, scripts, and attached names ever find a home and a green light, these potential projects permeate production offices, studio meetings, agents’ agendas as well as blogs and news sites just like this.
Of these phantoms, those that draw the most passionate feedback, whether they spark hope for the possibility of seeing a childhood memory brought to life on the big screen or threaten to rip apart the internet under the weight of fans’ collective rage, are those that are adapted from works of science fiction and fantasy. During Halo-8's San Diego Comic-Con panel, the actress who will be playing Cassie Hack in their Hack/Slash illustrated film was introduced, and we couldn't be more pleased to inform you that it is genre favorite Brea Grant.
Brea broke the news on her blog a short while ago: " haven’t done my Sdcc update yet, but one exciting thing that happened is that I will be the voice of Cassie Hack in Tim Seeley's and Halo-8's animated Hack/Slash series."
The Hack/Slash illustrated film is currently in production. It mixes comic book sequential art with 3D CGI and, in a new twist for Halo-8, rotoscoped animation of live-action performances.
"Cassie is a great role, and there are a lot of established actresses who'd love to bring her to life. We feel really blessed by the actress we've selected to take on the role--not only is she a fan favorite,...

A feature film on Hack/Slash has been in the making for sometime, but nothing has been heard about the film in a good while. Matt Pizzolo was announced as director of the film after last year’s Comic-con, and would be creating a new visual style for the film that would mix comic book sequential art with 3D CGI and rotoscoped animation of live-action.
