Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, in our final pre-nominations entry, we discuss our last-second swaps and no guts, no glory picks.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back with our final predictions after our final predictions for the 2022 Emmy Award nominations. When we last spoke with our faces, I was holding tight on “The Afterparty” getting a shock nomination for Best Comedy Series. But I’ve finally given up the ghost on my beloved Apple TV+ comedy murder mystery and gone with… “Ghosts.” I don’t really understand it either, but one thing I do know is that “Ghosts” is pretty popular! The CBS show was a sleeper broadcast hit that also did extremely well on Paramount+. And, I guess, I think that kind of...

To anyone who has watched Season 1 of Netflix’s “Squid Game” from the very beginning, it may have been obvious what the final game in the deadly competition would be, because it’s right there in the name of the show.
The title game that the finalists play against each other may be unfamiliar to Western audiences, but Squid Game is a playground game that involves a squid-shaped design drawn using chalk that the players have to navigate using whatever methods necessary. It can get quite violent.
In our final Making of “Squid Game” video supplied by Netflix, we get a look at that final game in the series, and in case it isn’t obvious, there’s a pretty major spoiler for how the game turns out if you haven’t gotten to the last couple episodes yet.

His dream though, is to earn enough money to go to the United States. With "Game of Thrones" Season 3 now halfway completed, the HBO series is charging full steam ahead. Many characters had major plot developments during "Kissed by Fire," from Robb Stark having to make a brutal decision to ensure his authority to Tyrion learning he will have to marry Sansa in order to thwart the Tyrells' plans for the Stark hostage.
Not every character might have been "kissed by fire" this episode, but the phrase had exciting and surprising connotations for those who were. Jon and Ygritte consummated their season-long flirtation at long last, and it was revealed that Beric Dondarrion has been resurrected by Melisandre's and Thoros's "red god," the Lord of Light, six times. It turns out that red magic does have more practical uses than creating shadow assassins.
Here's what happened in "Game of Thrones" Season 3, episode 5, "Kissed by Fire."

This weekend saw Japan's hardened genre fans head north to the wintry climes of Hokkaido for the Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival, an always-excellent parade of established and emerging talent from the country and surrounding region. Just moments ago, the winners were announced for the Fantastic Off Theater Competition, where five shorts and five features from new filmmakers duke it out for the Grand Prize of 2 million yen (approximately Us$20,000). Previous winners have included Korean director Oh Young-doo's Invasion of Alien Bikini and Ishihara Takahiro's Osaka Violence. Last year's other big winner was a personal favourite of mine, Taichi Suzuki's The Brat! This year's jury is headed by the incredibly talented Tsukamoto Shinya, director of such insane works as Tetsuo: Iron Man, Snake of June...

The 2013 Sundance Film Festival runs from January 17-27 and today the fest unveiled their competition slates including film in the Dramatic, Documentary, World Cinema Dramatic, Word Cinema Documentary and Next competitions. As always, these lineups are incredibly hard to predict, but amid this group there are a few interesting titles. The Dramatic competition includes Jill Soloway's Afternoon Delight, a dark comedy starring Kathryn Hahn, Juno Temple, Josh Radnor and Jane Lynch that centers on a L.A. housewife who hires a stripper as a live-in nanny. I had not heard of David Lowery's Ain't Them Bodies Saints, but a cast that includes Rooney Mara, Casey Affleck, Ben Foster, Nate Parker and Keith Carradine is immediately appealing, while the plot compares itself to Terrence Malick's Badlands and Bonnie & Clyde telling a story of Bob Muldoon and Ruth Guthrie, two young outlaws who are brought down by the authorities in the hills of Texas.

I love Oh Young-doo's Young Gun In The Time, and it is becoming increasingly apparent that I'm not the only one. Aftering premiering back in February at the Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival, Oh's micro-budgeted South Korean time traveling private-eye action comedy has been riding a wave of success around the global festival circuit. It recently played at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, and will next be seen in sunny Spain at Sitges later this month. We have posted a trailer for the film in the past, but now, hot off the presses, is a new, English subtitled version, which should help give interested parties a better idea of what's going on in this breakneck adventure. Check it out below!...

Another Fantastic Fest has come to a close. It's been a grueling week of madness, movies and mayhem...and I can't wait to do it again next year.
As I've written before, the main problem with film fests is you can never see everything you want. But that's okay because you end up being exposed to things you didn't know about — and that's usually a good thing. I missed plenty, but Kayley Viteo and I did see a lot of films at FF2012 and we've reviewed our favorites already (to find them, just plug "Fantastic Fest" into the search box). I know Kayley has some more reviews coming, but I'm going to take this opportunity to touch on some of the rest of the many things I saw this year.

The beginning of a filmmaker’s career is often the most exciting time to watch as their developing abilities are a visibly tangible thing. Talents on display in a first film can mature greatly by the time a sophomore effort sees a release. This year’s Fantastic Fest already has one example of such a feat with the Soska Sisters’ American Mary which, narrative issues aside, is a tremendous leap in quality from their debut (Dead Hooker In a Trunk). South Korean director Oh Young-doo has accomplished a similar feat with his second film, Young Gun In the Time. And not only is it an improvement over Invasion of Alien Bikini, it’s a pretty great film period. Young Gun (Hong Young-geun) is a private eye with mounting debt and a lack of clients, and with a secretary (Ha Eun-jung) who doubles as his landlord he’s forced to take any case that comes along. He...

There's really nothing like it. And even though Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are both heartbroken after her affair; I think this might be the best time for them to see what else is out there! Now, I'm not saying that they shouldn't get back together in a couple of years, but clearly they are both sad and are most likely full of hurt and anger right now. While Ricky, Edgar, Justine and myself work on our pieces about the films that we are most looking forward at this year’s Fantasia Film Festival, I thought that I would talk about the experience that every film-goer to Fantasia experiences: the films that for one reason or another you have to miss.
Sometimes it is because a screening sells out before you can get tickets. That will be especially heart-breaking this year, because in past years, Fantasia has deliberately programmed some Tba screenings so that they could replay films that sold out. This year with 160 feature films there is absolutely no flex, so if a screening sells out, you are probably not going to be able to see the film (at least at Fantasia.)
But even if you are the first person in line to buy tickets and have an unlimited budget, you have to face the fact that...

While Fantastic Fest brings in some of the biggest and baddest genre films the world has to offer, it's also well-known for giving a shot to the ultra small budget features. Two examples this year are Manborg by Steven Jon Kostanski and Invasion of Alien Bikini by Oh Young-doo. The former is like Robocop or The Terminator if those were made for Arnold's lunch money and the main character was battling demons from Hell. Invasion of Alien Bikini is about a deadly alien trapped in a beautiful girl's body who attempts to steal the sperm from a real-life superhero. Only at Fantastic Fest. Read more on each film after the jump. At 60 minutes long and probably costing at least that number of dollars, Steven John Kostanski's Manborg is kind of remarkable for its own unique reasons. In this world, the demons of Hell have taken over the Earth and...

[With Invasion of Alien Bikini now screening at Fantastic Fest we revisit our earlier review.]The trailer for Oh Young Doo's difficult second feature, Invasion Of Alien Bikini has already been something of a hit on these pages after we posted it up in March. Back then the film was bathing in its success at the Yubari Fantastic Film Festival, where it became the first non-Japanese film ever to win the festival's Grand Prix. While it can be argued the film delivers exactly what the trailer promises in terms of mild titillation, low budget sci-fi hi-jinks and yes - a mustachioed protagonist the likes of which we've not seen since The Cannonball Run - there are nevertheless a few surprises in store. We're at T-minus two days to the magic, mystery, and movies of Fantastic Fest, the film's world's premiere celebration of weird, wild, and wonderful cinema. It's also a really good place for alliteration, apparently.
With the opening night world premiere of "The Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence" bearing down on us, it's time to game plan. It's not an easy task. There are so many good movies at Fantastic Fest and they're all playing opposite one another. What to pick?
To make things a little easier on you (or maybe harder on you if you'd already penciled in something else), here are my selections for the five most intriguing looking movies on this year's schedule. I didn't pick anything I've already seen (like Jeff Nichols' "Take Shelter" -- which is absolutely outstanding, by the way), and I didn't pick anything with big-name directors or talent. I did that for two reasons.

Each year the Sitges Film Festival commercial spot is almost as eagerly awaited by the general public as its lineup, and Rafa Antón, creative director of the China agency and the man responsible for its campaigns over the last ten years, has presented this year’s commercial, entitled "Alter Ego". In addition, the preliminary lineup for the Festival has been revealed, but it's not complete by any means. More will be announced throughout the month.

Promotionally speaking, of course. Below you’ll find three new posters and one bizarro trailer for the forthcoming sci-fi comedy, all of which look very…strange. Curious as to what it’s all about? Here’s a synopsis: Young-gun saves a young lady from assailants and brings her into his house. She is an alien which needs sperms to breed and seduces Young-gun to get his sperms. However, Young-gun has taken a vow of chastity to keep his virginity until his marriage. She exhausts every means of gaining his sperms. “Invasion of Alien Bikini”, which stars Hong Young-Guen,...

With Oh Young Doo's second flim playing here ar Pifan, here's another chance to read my earlier review. The trailer for Oh Young Doo's difficult second feature, Invasion Of Alien Bikini has already been something of a hit on these pages after we posted it up in March. Back then the film was bathing in its success at the Yubari Fantastic Film Festival, where it became the first non-Japanese film ever to win the festival's Grand Prix. While it can be argued the film delivers exactly what the trailer promises in terms of mild titillation, low budget sci-fi hi-jinks and yes - a mustachioed protagonist the likes of which we've not seen since The Cannonball Run - there are nevertheless a few surprises in store....

The night Bristol Palin lost her V card to Levi Johnston was not real romantic -- She was drunk on wine coolers, didn't remember a thing, and when she woke up ... Levi had split. Oh young love! In excerpts from her memoir, "Not Afraid of Life: My Journey So Far," Bristol says she and Levi used condoms, but she got knocked up anyway. Levi's reaction when she broke the news -- "Better be a f**king boy.

The Love Consultants — professional matchmaker and dating coach Matt Titus and his wife, author and media personality Tamsen Fadal –tell you whether it’s smart to mix business with pleasure by working with someone you may be just getting to know.
You could be downloading a Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber duet single sooner than you think! But HollywoodlLife.com asked The Love Consultants, Matt Titus and Tamsen Fadal, whether the young love birds may be jumping too fast into working together. Could they be putting too much strain on their relationship?
Matt’s Take:
Selena and Justin are dating — after weeks of playing coy, the couple finally admitted their romance is for real. Of course from the standpoint of a relationship expert, I can’t put much credence into the notion that teenage dating has any weight or depth, especially between two megastars. It seems like Justin still has...

The Zombie plague reaches Korea with “The Neighbor Zombie”, a film which is the very definition of a labour of love, having been directed by four highly dedicated individuals using a digital camera and a starting budget of just of Us$17,000. Oh Young Doo, Ryu Hoon, Jang Youn Jung and Hong Young Guen all spent the last few years working in various positions in the Korean industry, before pooling their talents and resources, sharing the many duties across the ambitious production. The result is a work of obvious passion and enthusiasm, which successfully manages to bridge the tricky gap between horror, humour and social commentary. The film was well received by critics, winning two awards at the 2009 Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival, and has been garnering positive word of mouth from genre fans on the international circuit. Starting with an animated credits sequence to set the scene, “The Neighbor Zombie...

Before the Korean New Wave (represented by such international film festival faves as Lee Chang-dong, Hong Sang-soo and Kim Ki-duk) and long before homegrown productions like Shiri, Oldboy, and The Host began dominating the Seoul box office, there was a "Golden Age" of South Korean cinema, and the landmark that started that cine-luminous era was the late Kim Ki-young's The Housemaid (1960, a/k/a Hanyo). Bay Area audiences will finally have a chance to view this classic in the type of venue it was meant to be screened in, The Castro Theatre, on March 14, as part of the 28th San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival. Thanks to the committed restoration efforts of the Korean Film Archives, with support from the World Cinema Foundation, we will get to see it in a print closer to the state of its initial premiere screening.

Oh young Clark Kent. Will it have been ten years since you started to discover your Kryptonian superpowers?
The CW Network has announced its intention to renew Smallville and bring it back for a tenth season. Tom Welling returns to play the now grown-up Clark Kent, still figuring out his superpowers and not quite ready to don the blue-and-red Superman costume.
With new showrunners, a new Friday night timeslot and high ratings, the decision to renew Smallville was a no-brainer. All that the network had to do was figure out if they could afford Welling's asking price. Their decision was to give him a producer credit (which comes with a higher paycheck.)
No one knows how many of Smallville's supporting players will come back with Welling when the show returns in the fall.
Smallville joins the previously announced pick-ups of Gossip Girl, Supernatural, America's Next Top Model, 90210 and The Vampire Diaries.
