Anupamaa’ star Rupali Ganguly’s decision to join the Bjp and enter politics makes her the newest addition to a galaxy of women celebrities from Mumbai’s entertainment world who have taken the political plunge in the tradition of Nargis Dutt and Vyjayanthimala Bali. Who are the others still active in politics, albeit with mixed lucky? Here’s a list:
Dipika Chikhlia Topiwala: Best known for playing Sita in Ramanand Sagar’s show ‘Ramayan’, Chikhlia was the first of the then new-generation TV stars to pursue a political career, albeit briefly. She was elected MP from Baroda on a Bjp ticket in 1991.
On the big screen, Chikhlia made her Hindi cinema debut as lead in ‘Sun Meri Laila’, cast opposite Raj Kiran, in 1983, and later acted in films with Rajesh Khanna at a time when he had long ceased to be a superstar.

Silence 2: The Night Owl Bar Shootout Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Manoj Bajpayee, Prachi Desai, Parul Gulati, Sahil Vaid, Vaquar Shaikh, Ankit Bhardwaj, Dinker Sharma, Shruti Bapna, Surbhi Rohra
Director: Aban Bharucha Deohans
Silence 2: The Night Owl Bar Shootout Review Out ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
What’s Good: The procedural part of a crime investigation is deftly shown. This includes how the police correlate observation and thought with evidence and forensic angles. The performances are more than competent and there is a tangible atmosphere in most of the film. I also liked the unexpected turns that come at periodic intervals and the way the villain’s unrepentant character is presented.
What’s Bad: The script not only meanders in places but, more importantly, incorporates silly gaffes and flaws that could have been completely eliminated by some basic thinking. The post-climactic sequence where the cops are discussing the case jars...

One day in 1979, the phone rang at producer Bob Weiss’ house. “Be on your property tonight,” said the voice on the other line. According to the book Wild and Crazy Guys: The Comedy Mavericks of the ’80s Changed Hollywood Forever by Nick de Semlyen, later that evening, an object came flying over the fence and onto Weiss’ backyard. It was the script for a Blues Brothers movie that Wiess commissioned from Dan Aykroyd, who created the musical comedy act with John Belushi for Saturday Night Live.
If the way that Aykroyd delivered the manuscript was odd, the contents inside were even weirder. Titled The Return of the Blues Brothers and credited to the “Scriptatron Gl-9000,” the script was 324 pages long, far more than the 120 page standard, and filled with unlikely digressions.

Kiran Rao‘s sophomore Laapataa Ladies is a socially relevant tale that navigates the delicate balance between hope and despair, crafting an engaging narrative of fate and empowerment. Dealt with a sharp eye for humor and poignancy, the narrative sheds light on the stifling conditions of patriarchal values. The pivotal events in the film unfold like a series of comically absurd occurrences. But these moments appear plausible because there is a refreshing simplicity, eschewing heavy-handed exposition in favor of subtle exploration. With blistering clarity, the film tackles the underlying practice of age-old traditions, wherein the message within the dramedy of two women in distress never overpowers the overall progression of the story. Rao endows the characters of the film with a sincerity that is resonant in its tone. As they navigate their despairing journey, it reaffirms the value of their existence and the possibility of a life lived with dignity...

New Delhi, March 1 (Ians) Women-centric movies often end up highlighting stereotypes and essentialising people who belong to different gender communities.
But if, as protagonists in a narrative, women get to focus on or are oriented towards issues that confine them to pigeonholes, and also underline their experiences, perspectives and needs, it can truly be called a gynocentric film.
After wowing cinephiles with her directorial debut in ‘Dhobi Ghaat’, Kiran Rao tells a story in ‘Laapata Ladies’ that does not necessarily define feminism, or deal with it, but it sure delights both men and women with nuggets that describe a variety of facets of our lives, including policies, media, art, and organisations that prioritise the voices and concerns of women.
Set in 2001, somewhere in rural India in a fictional place named Nirmal Pradesh (though shot in Madhya Pradesh), ‘Laapata Ladies’ (Lost Ladies) is about Phool (Nitanshi Goel) and Jaya (Pratibha Ranta...

Laapataa Ladies
Directed by Kiran Rao
It is all about how ‘veil’ you know your bride. The ghunghat is a separate character in Kiran Rao’s masterpiece, a sparkling gem of a film where the minor flaws – for instance, some initial gags on rusticity that seem too touristic—only enhance the feeling of a flawed gem , that rare kind of creation that shines with a genuine spark.
Nothing seems overdone or filmy in Laapataa Ladies, not even Ravi Kishan’s priceless paan-chewing police officer who talks through his stuffed mouth with just that bit of intelligibility that doesn’t make him annoying.
This is Kishan’s best in years. But then, let’s not forget: he is in an extraordinary film about very ordinary people placed in most extraordinary circumstances.
Just think: Phool (Nitanshi Goel) and Jaya (Pratibha Ranta) are two brides in identical wedding sarees and in identical ghunghats...

Bollywood actor Pankaj Tripathi’s riveting and deliciously sinister mystery-thriller film ‘Kadak Singh’ was inaugurated at the opening ceremony of the 54th International Film Festival of India (Iffi) in Goa.
A spree of secrets, lies and mysteries unveil themselves as a retrograde amnesiac Kadak Singh, who is seemingly timid and meek may just be something the exact opposite of that, as what looked like a warm family drama story quickly took a dark turn in the film’s trailer.
Boasting suspense, drama, emotional weight, violence and great thrills, the trailer sees Panjak Tripathi as Ak Srivastav aka Kadak Singh, a man who finds himself in a hospital with no memory.
Surrounded by what were once familiar and now unknown faces, Kadak Singh suffers from retrograde amnesia and at the surface appears like a very gentle, nice and meek kind of a person.
That may very well be the case for him now,...

When Phool (Nitanshi Goel) almost trips while rushing to the train station to accompany husband Deepak (Sparsh Shrivastava) to her new home because of the veil covering her face, she’s told by her mother to pay attention to her feet. The woman tells her that’s the point of the veil––learning how to be a dutiful wife who stays quiet and always looks down. It’s about her modesty, his power. And it’s a tradition to which every newlywed on that train is beholden. So when a crowded compartment and Deepak’s need to use the restroom combine with the late hour and unavoidable fatigue, it shouldn’t be a surprise when he accidentally wakes the wrong woman in his hurry to catch the last bus.

InterviewShruthi’s debut film ‘B 32 Muthal 44 Vare’, dealing with the bodily challenges of women, won a special award under the Women and Transgender category of Kerala. Shruthi SharanyamWhen Shruthi Sharanyam speaks of the six main characters of her debut film, they sound like friends she has long had. Jaya's story alone should be a separate film and Rachel is almost like me, she says about two of the six persons she wrote about all too fondly. It was a pet topic, something she had mused about for years before sitting down with a nearly impossible deadline to write. When she was done, the film, B 32 Muthal 44 Vare, became a neatly woven work of art documenting through fiction the many bodily challenges women go through. Promptly, it won the Kerala State Award under the Women and Transgender category. It is the third award for the film, made as part of...

It only takes a trigger to make a person a devil and see their wrath being unleashed. Shaitan, the new Disney+ Hotstar special, takes us through the politics of rural Andhra Pradesh embroiled in Naxal conflicts. Amidst all this is a man who wants to do the right thing but ends up showcasing his dark side. This was something not explored by Telugu cinema, and it could have been interesting to watch what the outcome of the conflict would be. This show does it in a messed-up manner, but the climax of the show was surprisingly good.
Spoilers Ahead
Prologue
Shaitan begins with the voiceover of Baali, allowing the audience to understand why he is the victim while the system considers him a criminal. Baali threatens the state home minister to back away from local politics because he is aware of the politics that the government is playing to get rid of him,...

Whenever I talk to people from Malaysia or Indonesia, they do not fail to mention that the mainstream cinema of their countries, and essentially the most popular movies, consist mostly of horror and romantic movies. These titles are very rarely exported, to festivals for example, but it seems that in recent years, Netflix, in its constant search for context, has decided to pick up a number, thus allowing them to reach an international audience. Perhaps the reason is the success of directors like Joko Anwar, who has managed to raise the horror genre to rather high levels. Ruben Adrian attempts to do something similar with “Spirited”, by mixing horror with fantasy, in a combination that is quite popular nowadays.

Horror and fantasy fiction are rare-cross breeds. It is only occasionally that we come across a decent film or television show, for this genre has always been tricky to crack. Spirited or Jagat Arwah lets us into the life of a young boy who is about to discover a potentially life-altering secret. Will the boy be ready to take on the adventure?
Jagat Arwah begins with a certain gentleman entering a mansion, and it is pitch dark inside, which proves no one has lived in this place for a while. The man walks towards a door, and by the looks of it, he is clearly on the lookout for something. It is not revealed who the man is or why he is here. He opens the door to a room to see a large object being covered by a cloth. Curious to see what the object is, he removes the cloth.

When Reba McEntire first met Aretha Franklin in Washington D.C., during the Eighties, she was starstruck. “She scared me to death. I wouldn’t even go up and talk to her,” the country star admitted during an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show. Hudson herself knows a thing or two about carrying the weight of not only being in the presence of the Queen of Soul but also portraying her on-screen.
Given their shared experience, McEntire and Hudson took the opportunity to perform Franklin’s greatest hit, “Respect,” for a buzzing studio audience.

With a last Cut by director Karan Johar, it’s a wrap for Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt! This highly, highly anticipated movie is set to release July 28th! Also featuring Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, and Shabana Azmi, it is, we hear, a story brimming with love, family, and good vibes. Ranveer earlier said that Rarkpk is a quintessential Karan Johar movie that includes humour, romance, drama, songs, glamour, and family roots in a very quirky, zany, amazing film.
As he embarked in this film, the director revealed, “It’s time to go back to my favourite place, it’s time to create some eternal love stories from behind the lens. A very special story, truly immersed in the roots of love and family. It’s a love story, but no – it’s not your regular love story. Rocky and Rani are going to...

ReviewThe film, through the stories of six women, takes you through crises, both small and big, related to bodily issues that get resolved with the comforting support that one woman lends another.Quietly, smoothly, Shruthi Sharanyam’s B 32 Muthal 44 Vare flows from one woman to another, like a sheet of paper in the wind. You wouldn’t notice when the shifts between the stories end, because by then the women have somehow floated into each other’s lives. Without drama, without preaching about sisterhood, one woman becomes the pillar of support to another. The film, Shruthi’s first as a director of feature films, touches the lives of six such women, going through various crises, small and big. But the way they are sorted out, without daredevil moments or tiring monologues, you can leave with a comforting picture in your head. Shruthi chooses to introduce each of her six women...

When Baz Luhrmann‘s “Elvis” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in late May, the buzz for its young star Austin Butler grew quickly to a deafening din. The film’s reception was punctuated by a 12-minute standing ovation, and the conventional wisdom was that the Oscar — and the Golden Globe and the SAG Award, for that matter — was Butler’s to lose. As of this writing, the 31-year-old is the third choice in Gold Derby’s combined Best Actor odds at 9/2, trailing top pick Brendan Fraser for “The Whale” at 69/20 and Colin Farrell for “The Banshees of Inisherin” at 4/1.
So what does Oscar history tell us about his chances of getting nominated for “Elvis”? When it comes to Butler, he will be looking to follow in the grand tradition of actors who have transformed themselves into real-life music legends. And he surely delivers an incandescent performance as Elvis Aron Presley.

Veteran actress Jaya Bachchan was seen complaining to her husband and superstar Amitabh Bachchan for not sending flowers and letters to her like he sends to others as a token of appreciation.
She said questioning Big B: “I have not seen but heard that when you are impressed with someone’s work or nature, you send that person either flowers or letters but you never sent it to me. Did you ever?”
Abhishek Bachchan also nodded his head and Big B replied: “This programme is going public and it is not a good thing.”
Jaya also made Big B speechless by asking an interesting question that what he would do if he is stuck with her on an island and the ‘Shakti’ star failed to answer it and asked for options. To which Jaya said that there are no options for this question.
Bachchan was also left teary-eyed after...
