Exclusive: Physician turned #1 Nyt bestselling author Robin Cook is partnering with Euro Gang Entertainment, the entertainment company of Gianni Nunnari and Simon Horsman, on a pair of new projects for film and TV.
The first, Bellevue, will be a feature based on Cook’s forthcoming novel of the same name, which marks a departure for the author as a dark and atmospheric work of horror. Slated for publication in December, the book tells the story of Mitt, a first-year surgical resident at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. Mitt has a long and dark family history: his physicians’ forebears are guilty of grievous sins, extreme instances of medical malpractice committed at the very hospital where he now studies. Set against the gloom of supernatural haunting, and amidst gruesomely accurate surgical imagery, Bellevue is the story of supernatural vengeance for the sins of Mitt’s ancestors.

As the final days tick down to Sunday’s 96th Academy Awards, Gold Derby senior editors Denton Davidson, Marcus James Dixon and Daniel Montgomery, along with news and features editor Ray Richmond and Tariq Khan – regular Gold Derby contributor and encyclopedic awards expert extraordinaire – got together on Zoom to slug it out over their Oscar predictions in all 23 categories.
With an “Oppenheimer” steamroller forecast on nearly everyone’s radar, there was plenty of consensus among the guys, including the fact “Oppenheimer” is a lock for Best Picture and its director Christopher Nolan for Best Director. Also, they’re unanimous in picking Robert Downey Jr. in supporting actor for (ho-hum) “Oppenheimer” and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”) in supporting actress, both of whom have treated awards season as their personal plaything while sweeping up everything in sight. “It’s kind of Christopher Nolan’s fault that he made awards season so boring,...

It’s been presumed for months now that the lead actress race in film categories at the various ceremonies was destined to be a two-way race between Emma Stone for “Poor Things” and Lily Gladstone for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Lately, it’s been more of a one-way race, with Stone topping BAFTA, the Golden Globes and Choice Choice honors. But in a Screen Actors Guild Film Awards predictions slugfest this week in advance of Saturday’s ceremony, Gold Derby senior editors Denton Davidson, Marcus James Dixon and Daniel Montgomery and news and features editor Ray Richmond were asked to consider a third contender: Margot Robbie for “Barbie.” This is because they were joined by encyclopedic awards expert extraordinaire and regular Gold Derby contributor Tariq Khan, who made a convincing case that Robbie was poised for a massive upset based on his personal survey of some 500 SAG Awards voters.

Bassist Matt “Piggy D.” Montgomery has announced his exit from Rob Zombie’s band after being a fixture in its lineup for nearly two decades.
The news comes just one day after Zombie announced his 2024 co-headlining “Freaks on Parade Tour” with Alice Cooper, featuring support from Ministry and Filter.
Update: Rob Zombie has announced the return of Rob “Blasko” Nicholson to the lineup. Get all the details here.
Montgomery did not give a specific reason for this exit in a private Instagram post (as seem below via Blabbermouth), simply stating, “Dear Friends, My time with Zombie has come to an end. It was an honor to entertain you for the last 18 years. I look forward to the future and wish everyone the best. Peace & Love, Matt Montgomery aka Count D., Piggy D., Giggles.”

In 1947 director Robert Montgomery tried something radical. In adapting Raymond Chandler’s “Lady in the Lake” the director attempted to mirror the first-person narrative style of the book with his camera. The viewer would see the movie exclusively through the eyes of detective Philip Marlowe, while never seeing the detective himself (played by Montgomery) except in shots where he sees his reflection in the mirror.
Both the MGM-released film and the formal experiment were failures. Pure first-person filmmaking had the opposite effect of what was intended, the formal experiment only distanced the viewer. Almost 80 years later conventional filmmaking wisdom remains that to effectively employ point-of-view shots they need to be bracketed by shots of the character — character looks, cut to see what they see, cut back to the character’s reaction to what they saw — to shape what the audience was looking at, and to draw them into the story.

Looked at one way, the 75th Emmy Awards on Monday night yielded the most predictable (read: boring) of ceremonies. Everything went according to form. “Succession” was expected to dominated the drama series categories. “The Bear” was supposed to preside over comedy series. “Beef” was thought to be a shoo-in among the limited series lineups. And that’s exactly what happened. However, looked at another way, Gold Derby voters accurately forecast the winners in 26 of the 27 categories, which is quite the feat. Still, meeting for a slugfest the morning after the Emmys, senior editors Marcus James Dixon, Daniel Montgomery and Denton Davidson and news and features editor Ray Richmond were officially underwhelmed, hoping for an upset or two but finding just one category that didn’t go according to form: Best Variety/Talk Series, where the outgoing “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” defied the Gold Derby odds. When it came to the biggest shock of the morning, “It has to be Mark Ruffalo missing for Best Supporting Actor, right?” asks Khan. Instead, the guild favored Ruffalo’s “Poor Things” co-star, Willem Dafoe. “I actually thought it would be the other way around,” he continues. “Mark Ruffalo had the showier, hammier performance and SAG eats that up. Still recovering from watching and/or covering the Golden Globes on Sunday night, Gold Derby senior editors Marcus James Dixon, Denton Davidson and Daniel Montgomery, news and features editor Ray Richmond and encyclopedic awards expert extraordinaire Tariq Khan sat down Monday morning (Pacific Time) to sort out what they had just seen hours before. Davidson was interviewing those arriving on the red carpet (assessment: freezing), while Richmond hung out in the general press room recording Q&As with winners backstage (assessment: uninspired) and Dixon, Montgomery and Khan watched it all unfold on TV as the awards gods intended. Their overall evaluation was that the comedy from presenters was hit-and-miss and first-time host Jo Koy fell flat, but that in general the results – mostly predictable though they may have been – supply a valuable gauge for the SAG, Critics Choice and Oscar races coming up. Simone Ashley has picked the follow-up to her breakthrough performance as Kathani “Kate” Sharma in season 2 of the hit Netflix series Bridgerton, as Deadline reports that she has the lead role in the psychological thriller This Tempting Madness, which just wrapped production in Los Angeles.
The film marks the feature directorial debut of Jennifer E. Montgomery, who also wrote the screenplay with her husband Andrew M. Davis. Davis has a background in cinematography, including some work on the Sam Raimi-produced horror anthology series 50 States of Fright, so he lensed his wife’s first movie. Inspired by a true story, it sees Ashley taking on the role of a young woman who awakens from a coma grievously injured, memory fractured, her husband arrested. But as she puts together the pieces of her past, she starts to question her own actions — and her perception of reality.

There are plenty of reasons to love "The Twilight Zone," but a fun one is the way it lets us see so many famous actors before they became household names. Before Carol Burnett had her own variety show, she starred in the 1962 episode "Cavender is Coming." Before Leonard Nimoy got to be in "Star Trek," he was a throwaway soldier in the 1961 episode "A Quality of Mercy." Then there's Elizabeth Montgomery, best known for her role in the 1960s sitcom "Bewitched." Before she played the good witch Samantha Stephens, however, she played a stoic, unnamed woman in the season 3 premiere of "The Twilight Zone."
The 1961 episode is called "Two," and it starts off with Montgomery's character wandering through an abandoned war-torn town. It's been years since the war ended, resulting in total destruction on both sides. When she meets a mysterious man with the opposing army's uniform (Charles Bronson...

“Is it a foregone conclusion that ‘Succession’ will win?” wonders Gold Derby Editor Daniel Montgomery about the Golden Globe race for Best Drama Series. He discussed his predictions in all 12 TV categories with Editor Marcus James Dixon and Expert Tariq Khan. Listen to their slugfest below.
“I would say that ‘Succession’ being the phenomenon that it has been, it’s hard not to give it this big farewell hug, if you will. So that’s why I think it seems pretty safe,” argues Khan. It doesn’t hurt that the series earned a record nine nominations this year, more than any TV program has ever gotten in a single season. Dixon agrees that “Succession” “went out with a huge bang. Everyone loved it. I think it’s one of the easiest calls of the night.”

Every now and then a subject comes along that seemed compelling enough to the right decision-makers to somehow become the focus of multiple projects.
