Exclusive: Adriyan Rae lands recurring role on Netflix’s Forever created by Mara Brock Akil.
Forever is a reimagination of the 1975 novel by Judy Blume and follows the epic love story of two Black teens exploring their identities through the awkward — and moving — journey of being each other’s firsts in 2018 Los Angeles. Like its inspiration, the show will examine “the idea of your first love being with you forever,” said Brock Akil, who created acclaimed stories of Black love and growth like sitcom Girlfriends and drama Being Mary Jane. She was also a writer on the YA comedy Moesha.
Oscar winner Regina King (One Night in Miami) will serve as executive producer and will direct the first episode.
Rae will portray Brittany, one of Keisha’s older cousins, and is described as a social climber who looks out for Keisha and her well-being like an older sister—even if...

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the BBC sitcom Ghosts
One of the best things about BBC sitcom Ghosts is the way the cast welcomes viewers into its heartwarming friendship circle, and makes us feel like one of the gang. They might be one of the tightest ensembles in the business, but there’s a definite generosity of spirit (pun intended) in Ghosts, and a “the more the merrier” vibe.
Perhaps this is why there’ve been so many memorable guest stars. The show easily attracts superstar-level names as well as giving a well-earned platform to some of the UK’s rising comedy stars. While we eagerly await Ghosts fifth – and sadly final – series, let’s remind ourselves of some of the show’s best guest appearances:
Jennifer Saunders
It’s hard to imagine someone formidable enough to have birthed a character like Lady Fanny Button (aka Martha Howe-Douglas), so...

Searchlight Pictures has released a trailer for its new film “Empire of Light” from writer/director/producer Sam Mendes ahead of its December 9 theatrical release. The heartfelt charmer tells the story of a fledgling English cinema during the 1980s that aspires to reach the greatest of its early years. “This whole place is for people who want to escape, people who don’t belong anywhere else,” declares Toby Jones‘ Norman, the theater’s perfectionist projectionist, as the camera settles on Olivia Colman‘s Hilary, an introverted front-of-house manager longing for so much more in life than to sell stale popcorn. Watch the “Empire of Light” trailer above.
Of course, awards prognosticators have been wondering since the Telluride Film Festival whether “Empire of Light” will be the vehicle that brings Colman back to the Oscars. The English performer staged a massive upset four years ago when she won the 2018 Best Actress...

"If we're not clever about this, no one will get to your brother!" Universal has debuted a full-length official trailer for Sam Mendes' war movie 1917, which looks phenomenal so far. We also posted the behind-the-scenes featurette earlier this week showing how they filmed this movie to play out like one non-stop long take. Set during World War I in the year 1917, the movie takes place over the course of one day, following soldiers on a "seemingly impossible mission" to deliver a message across enemy lines to stop an attack that will kill their own soldiers. With cinematography by Roger Deakins. Starring Dean-Charles Chapman and George MacKay, joined by a stellar ensemble cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Madden, Andrew Scott, Mark Strong, Colin Firth, Teresa Mahoney, Daniel Mays, Adrian Scarborough, Justin Edwards, Gerran Howell, Anson Boon, and Richard McCabe. I cannot wait to see this! All of the footage looks spectacular – realistic but also riveting,...

"There is no better way to tell this story than with one continuous shot." Ohhhhh hell yes! Another one-shot movie coming up this year. Universal has debuted a fascinating behind-the-scenes featurette for Sam Mendes' new film 1917, set during World War I in the year 1917 - watch the first teaser trailer again. The war movie takes place over the course of one day, following soldiers on a "seemingly impossible mission" to deliver a message across enemy lines to stop an attack that will kill their own soldiers. With cinematography by Roger Deakins, of course. The excellent ensemble cast features: Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Madden, Andrew Scott, Mark Strong, Colin Firth, George MacKay, Teresa Mahoney, Dean-Charles Chapman, Daniel Mays, Adrian Scarborough, Justin Edwards, Gerran Howell, Anson Boon, and Richard McCabe. I love that they release these featurettes now, instead of saving them only for Blu-ray special features, because this looks magnificent. So much movie-making magic being shown!

"There is only one way this war ends: last man standing." Universal has unveiled the first teaser trailer for Sam Mendes' new film 1917, set during World War I in the year 1917 (as the title clearly indicates). The war movie takes place over the course of one day, following soldiers on a "seemingly impossible mission" to deliver a message across enemy lines to stop an attack that will kill their own soldiers. The rumor is that this will play out over the course of one long-take, following these soldiers around the battlefield. The excellent ensemble cast features: Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Madden, Andrew Scott, Mark Strong, Colin Firth, George MacKay, Teresa Mahoney, Dean-Charles Chapman, Daniel Mays, Adrian Scarborough, Justin Edwards, Gerran Howell, Anson Boon, and Richard McCabe. When the banshees of the past come calling in Jez Butterworth’s fearsome The Ferryman, you can bet their shrieking will be blood curdling. Directed by Sam Mendes (Skyfall) and opening tonight on Broadway at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, the Olivier-award-winning play is a stunner, stitching familiar elements of Irish pastoral drama, The Troubles history and Butterworth’s magical, myth-tapping touches into something as powerful as anything on today’s stage.
If nothing else – and, believe me, there is much, much else – The Ferryman cements the playwright’s status as an unrivaled ending-writer, as this tale of a sprawling Irish family reckoning with decades, even centuries, of violence and division spirals to a conclusion that recalls, in its own way, those earth-pounding, theater-shaking footsteps of unseen Giants that closed Butterworth’s transcendent Jerusalem in 2009.
Not that you’ll want to rush a moment of the three hours and 15 minutes...

An interfering duck, a bossy pig and a dozy rabbit face a series of misadventures in this cute family-friendly animation
This pre-schooler-friendly, but somehow not sappy, animated feature is a French-Belgian production which has been seamlessly dubbed into English by a fine ensemble of British actors.
The amusing dialogue in the first of this three-part package – a little trifle about a meddlesome duck (Bill Bailey), a controlling pig (Justin Edwards) and a dozy rabbit (Adrian Edmondson) who have various misadventures when they offer to deliver a human baby for an injured stork – probably wouldn’t be side-splitting if you read it on the page. But somehow the fusion of the performers’ droll delivery, the spare yet expressive character designs and well-observed movement creates a real warmth and wit.

After delighting audiences and critics alike at the 2017 London Film Festival, Benjamin Renner and Patrick Imbert’s brilliantly observed French animation The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales (Le grand mechant renard et autres contes) finally gets a nationwide UK release, but not before undergoing a commendably accurate dubbing in English in a version which sees Matthew Goode, Celia Imrie and Bill Bailey lend their voices to this delightfully comedic anthology.
Adapted from Renner’s graphic novel of the same, The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales was originally conceived as 3 half-hour TV specials, but was later turned into a film in which the three different stories are linked together by a fourth wall-breaking interval in which assorted characters take turns in introducing each new section.

Dan Stevens plays Charles Dickens in this tin-eared, saccharine, entirely terrible comic fantasy about the writing of A Christmas Carol
This entirely terrible film feels about as Christmassy as watching England go out of the World Cup at the group stage. Dan Stevens – usually a likable and ingenuous screen presence – is horribly miscast and misdirected in the role of Charles Dickens in a kind of wacky and saccharine muttonchop-whisker-gawd-bless-yer fantasy-comedy of what it was like when he wrote A Christmas Carol and thus supposedly “invented Christmas”.
Dickens keeps bumping into people called “Marley” and “Copperfield” and nodding significantly to himself, occasionally writing in his notebook. The film suggests he wrote this Christmas tale out of the blue (in fact he had already written three other Christmas stories). We see him having lunch with his friend John Forster (Justin Edwards), getting exasperated with his Micawberesque dad John (Jonathan Pryce) and having...

As Les Standiford’s book would tell it, Charles Dickens (Dan Stevens) found himself in somewhat of a creative rut after a lengthy and expensive tour of America post-Oliver Twist. He had published three flops since buying a new London home in need of wholesale remodeling and began watching his pocketbook dwindle along with his confidence. It was as though the autumn of 1843 presented him a make or break moment wherein he wasn’t certain he would ever write again. And then inspiration struck with the voice of a new maid (Anna Murphy’s Tara) telling the children Irish ghost stories before bed. This idea of Christmas Eve providing a doorway of sorts to the spiritual world planted itself in Dickens’ mind. Soon after Ebenezer Scrooge (Christopher Plummer) was born.

Chicago – The story of Ebenezer Scrooge, as told in Charles Dicken’s classic “A Christmas Carol,” seems to be the one constant that survives the commercialization of the holiday season. The story of Scrooge’s creation is told with expressive sentimentality in “The Man Who Invented Christmas.”
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Dan Stevens portrays the title character, that of Charles Dickens himself, and the film – directed by Bharat Nalluri (“Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day”), and adapted from a book by Les Standiford – is a scattered narrative between Dicken’s chaotic life in mid-19th Century Britain and his creative spirit in producing “A Christmas Carol.” Literature buffs will get a thrill as the characters spring to life as Dickens invents them, and they follow him around for the rest of the process, almost begging to be freed. Less interesting are the particulars of Dicken’s life, with domestic and familial duties that...

Dan Stevens gives a frenetic performance as Charles Dickens racing to finish writing “A Christmas Carol” in time to publish before the holiday, in The Man Who Invented Christmas. Directed by Bharat Nalluri (Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day), this film has all the Christmas color and Victorian period costumes and sets you could want in a Christmas film. The film is mostly a clever way to retell the famous tale, as characters spring from the author’s imagination while he struggles with his own family issues and races to meet a pre-Christmas release deadline, but it also touches on how his short novel transformed a once-minor holiday into the tradition we know today.

It’s only been a few short weeks since Winnie the Pooh got the “Shakespeare in Love” treatment in “Goodbye Christopher Robin” — a film that inspired this critic to lament that “we used to tell stories; now we just tell stories about how we used to tell stories” — which means that we’re already long overdue for another saccharine period fable about the creation of another literary icon. Enter Ebenezer Scrooge, who came to Charles Dickens at a moment when both men were at a low point in their lives.
The year was 1843, the great author (a manic Dan Stevens) was 31, and his massive fame was ebbing in the wake of three consecutive flops. With the winter settling in and a certain lifestyle to maintain, Dickens was in desperate need of a Christmas miracle. There was only one problem: There hadn’t been a Christmas miracle in almost 1,843 years. You see,...

Film comedies packed witty, biting humor and whip-smart dialog are pretty rare these days. So Love & Friendship, director Whit Stillman’s screen adaptation of Jane Austen’s lesser-known early short novel “Lady Susan,” is particularly welcome. With Kate Beckinsale shinning in the lead role as clever, ruthless Lady Susan, the witty comedy is even more delicious.
Love & Friendship is pure fun, a brilliant comedy filled with laugh-out-loud moments and terrific ensemble performances by a largely British cast, making it entertaining even for those who are not big fans of Jane Austen or costume films.
Unlike other more familiar Austen works, Love & Friendship is more comedy than romance, although there is some of that too. The story might be described as a comedy of manners but that label makes this very funny film sound more tame than it really is. The story is set in the 1790s, a little earlier than most Austen stories,...

As a film critic, you sometimes find yourself working into a specific niche. Personally, I’ve become known for my commitment to horror – indie or mainstream – which makes some people believe that it’s All I cover. At a festival, a fellow critic was surprised to see me attending a certain screening “not aligned” with my “focus,” but what people forget is that while cinema enthusiasts may find refuge in a single genre, a true movie lover embraces All genres and evaluates without bias.
On that note, I’ll happily admit that Whit Stillman’s Love & Friendship left me charmed, delighted, and missing better days of linguistic appreciation. Yes – this horror guy can get down with Victorian-era Jane Austen romantics (Stillman’s film is adapted from Austen’s novella, Lady Susan). You got a problem with that?

Despite a three-movie takeover of the ’90s, Whit Stilman isn’t a name that offers much draw to those who weren’t around to fall in love with his comedies of manners.
Damsels in Distress, despite casting Greta Gerwig and Adam Brody (and being as good as his other films), couldn’t manage to pull in audiences the way the rest of the films did.
Now Stilman is back again, and he’s offering up Jane Austen this time around. In a perfect blend of styles and sensibilities, Stilman directs and wrote the screenplay based on one of Austen’s less-appreciated works, Lady Susan.
Kate Beckinsale has never looked more impressive, and Chloë Sevigny, while she doesn’t have a lot of chance to show off in the trailer, has shown that this is right in her wheelhouse. Plus, the trailer gives you the chance to catch a glimpse of the supporting cast members,...

The work of Jane Austen continues to accumulate fans, centuries after her passing, and the happy result of this is a semi-regular stream of impressive screen adaptations. The latest of these is Love & Friendship – not to be confused with the novella of the same name, which was written by Austen at the age of 14. The film is actually adapted from another of the writer’s early works – Lady Susan – but the title was switched for reasons best known to its writer-director, Academy Award nominee Whit Stillman.
The story centres on the unconventional and subversive character of Lady Susan Vernon (Kate Beckinsale) – recently widowed, and mother of the somewhat shy Frederica Vernon (Morfydd Clark). Lady Susan and Frederica sweep into the home of her brother-in-law, Charles Vernon (Justin Edwards), where Susan sets about finding a husband for herself, and one for her daughter – all the while having a relationship with a man who is,...

Perfectly timed with the impending release of three of his greatest films on a Criterion set, we’ll be getting a new feature from Whit Stillman this summer. Love & Friendship begins in good faith, introducing the audience to its large cast via a series of medium still shots of the actors looking directly to camera, with text telling us their name, relation to another character, and perhaps a personality trait, all in the manner of a police record (“Brother of ______; bit of a rattle” goes one). These facts are only of use if you’re the type to remember the names of every guest at an unfamiliar dinner party; for most, the task will prove largely impossible. But by giving us a moment to look at them, how they pose and situate themselves in their environment, we may not learn who they are, but we can associate immediately what they are, whether they’re prideful or shy or cunning or honest. By the time they then show up in the main action of film, we have predetermined associations,...

The Horrible Histories team tackle the early life of William Shakespeare. A funny family treat is the end result.
“Half as good as Shakespeare In Love”, is what Bill’s co-creator, Laurence Rickard, says they were aiming to create.
This whimsical imagining of William Shakespeare’s ‘lost years’ certainly pays one or two playful homages to that other less-than-accurate biopic, but its real heritage can be traced to Monty Python and Blackadder. In the fashion of the former, the sextet of main actors, already known for their ensemble work on Cbbc’s Horrible Histories and Sky’s Yonderland, share the majority of the roles between them. Each has a main role, and Mathew Baynton proves a lovably optimistic Shakespeare at the heart of it all. Yet it is the minor characters – ‘the body collector’ and ‘sausage guy’ being particular favourites – who bring this world to life.

We reported back in February that, following his side-trip into streaming TV with Amazon pilot The Cosmopolitans, Whit Stillman was planning to gather his Last Days Of Disco veterans Kate Beckinsale and Chloë Sevigny for a new period drama, Love & Friendship. He’s been busy shooting in Ireland and is at work editing, so here’s the first image of the leads from the film. Adapted from Jane Austen’s novella Lady Susan, the 1790s-set story sees Beckinsale as widow Lady Susan Vernon, who heads to the country estate of her in-laws amid much speculation about her social life. There, she makes an attempt to find a husband and to help her daughter Frederica fall in love. Jane Austen’s wealth of fiction has been adapted for the screen time and time again, with the seminal Pride & Prejudice being the most notable example of the late author’s work. How and ever, one of Austen’s lesser known novella’s has attracted the attention of Metropolitan director Whit Stillman, who is adapting the period piece in the form of Love and Friendship.
With Kate Beckinsale and Chloe Sevigny – reuniting with the filmmaker following ’98’s The Last Days of Disco – on board in the two lead roles, shooting began earlier this year in Dublin, Ireland, and as is the case with the majority of on-location shooting, the first image from the set has found its way online, showing the two leading ladies in costume. Whit Stillman is going back in time a couple of ways with his upcoming "Love & Friendship." First, he's reteaming with “The Last Days of Disco” leads Kate Beckinsale and Chloe Sevigny, and then, he's adapting Jane Austen’s novella “Lady Susan,” which was posthumously published. And now, the first look at Stillman's first period movie is here. Also starring Xavier Samuel, Emma Greenwell, Morfydd Clark, Jemma Redgrave, James Fleet, Tom Bennett and Justin Edwards, the story follows the beautiful widow Lady Susan Vernon, who has come to the estate of her in-laws to wait out the colorful rumors about her dalliances circulating through polite society. While ensconced there, she decides to secure a husband for herself and her rather reluctant debutante daughter, Frederica. No release date or distributors lined up just yet, and it probably won't be until 2016 that this hits the festival circuit, so sit tight and hopefully this image can tide.
