Secret Cinema, the London-based immersive entertainment company, has been acquired by TodayTix of the U.S. plans for a national tour Stateside in 2023 and a permanent location in LA.
Financial terms weren’t disclosed but a person familiar with the deal — which just closed — said it was worth just over 100 million.
The company has sold over a million tickets to more than 50 shows, secured a multi-year, multi-title deal with Disney (kicking off with Guardians of the Galaxy), and produced experiences with major movie studios including Marvel, Universal, Paramount, Lionsgate, Sony, Netflix and Eon Productions. Its latest shows have attracted large audiences, with Casino Royale reaching over 100,000 in London, and its collaboration with Netflix, Stranger Things, drawing over 300,000 people in its first Los Angeles production. Its productions let costumed audience members become active participants in the storylines, often in a melding of music, art, theater and dance.

Fabien Riggall, director of Secret Cinema, explains why the organisation has set up protest screenings in the refugee camps of Calais and across the globe
Secret Cinema director Fabien Riggall has just returned from a visit to the Jungle refugee camp in Calais, and the anger at what he saw is palpable. “It’s the inaction when faced with the biggest movement of refugees since the second world war that gets me,” he says, back in Secret Cinema’s Hackney office. “As a cultural organisation, we should react to this. [The camp in] Calais is a shithole. It’s literally on a dump.”

The world of Star Wars has been re-created for the latest immersive experience by Secret Cinema. Michael Rosser headed to a galaxy far, far away to find out if it would prove a trip into hyperspace… or hypersleep.
Secret Cinema has staged its biggest production to date – of that there is no doubt.
A team of more than 400 people at the immersive cinema specialist have recreated the fantasy world of Star Wars across 18 acres in London – twice the size of the space used to stage its hit production of Back To The Future last summer.
It reportedly took a year for founder Fabien Riggall to secure a license from Disney - owner of the Star Wars franchise - and its staging comes ahead of the much-anticipated release of new instalment The Force Awakens in December.
The ambition is bigger, the interactive elements more immersive and the sets enormous. But is bigger always better?

Fabien Riggall, the founder of Secret Cinema, has a picture of Harrison Ford next to his desk in his Hackney Office. On the wall is a French poster of The Empire Strikes Back, the second instalment of George Lucas's original Star Wars trilogy. In the middle of the room is a table with the architectural blueprints for Secret Cinema's forthcoming screening of the film, revealing that the site will be twice as large as the one used for Back To The Future. Riggall sees these on the table and turns the plans to face downwards: his business motto is "Tell No One", and he's not willing to let any secrets out, no matter how long we've been acquainted. The interview moves to a nearby café.

Secret Cinema has announced that it is bringing its London production of Back to the Future to Los Angeles in 2015.
The event cinema organiser, which provides immersive screenings of classic and new films, will move the production next year in celebration of the film's 30th anniversary.
Secret Cinema broadcast Back to the Future at the Olympic Park in Stratford, east London, throughout the summer. The screenings saw them build a replica of Hill Valley, the fictional Californian town which the film is set in.
The company created a fully-functional town, including the school and clock tower featured in the film, and a cast of 74 actors dressed in 1950s outfits.
In spite of some delays to the start of screenings, the London event attracted more than 75,000 visitors, making it the biggest live cinema event to date.
The La event will take place next summer, after the company launches in the Us early in the year.

Secret Cinema has announced plans to stage Back to the Future live in London.
The town of Hill Valley will be built for the event in a secret London location, so audiences can become citizens living between 1955 and 1985.
There will be lots of audience participation, with some members able to use a time-machine to be 'transported' into another existence, as well as secret alleys and passageways that will take fans to 1985 and 2015.
The event will be split into two halves - the first allowing audiences to interact in Hill Valley, and the second being a screening of Back to the Future with surprise elements.
A battle of the bands contest will also determine what band will play on stage each night, as well as a secret high profile band headlining. An 'Enchantment under the Sea' prom after party will also be held at a venue near the secret location.

Secret Cinema founder Fabien Riggall reveals how its most ‘grand’ production to date came together and what the future holds.
Dressed in dapper 1930s clothing, Fabien Riggall walks unnoticed among the wide eyed guests of The Grand Budapest Hotel.
It marks the launch night for the latest production of Secret Cinema, the immersive ‘live film’ company that Riggall founded in 2007 and attracted more than 100,000 people to its shows last year, offering a night of interactive theatre before screening the movie around which it is themed.
This latest show could be their most ‘grand’ to date, a far cry from the prison setting of its Shawshank Redemption production or the dirty future created for screenings of Alien and Blade Runner.
Themed around Wes Anderson’s new energetic caper, Secret Cinema has brought to life the grandeur of The Grand Budapest Hotel at an old glass factory in London.

Pioneers of popular immersive cinema experiences, Secret Cinema, today added a Secret Hotel element to the event, letting moviegoers stay on at themed mystery lodgings complete with staff in character
Immersive theatre and cinema experiences are all the rage ... thanks to pioneering companies Punchdrunk and Secret Cinema. More recently the likes of the Experimental Food Society and Poietic have created immersive restaurants that turn dining out into a theatrical experience (levitating canapés, anyone?). So, it was only a matter of time before some clever clogs came up with the concept of immersive, or theatrical, accommodation. Welcome to the Secret Hotel.
Tickets went on sale today at 1pm for an overnight experience created by the founders of the hugely popular Secret Cinema – the Secret Hotel gives audience members the chance to become guests at a curated themed "hotel" inspired by the film they've just watched.
As you would expect, the Secret Hotel is shrouded in mystery.

A secret nudist swimming club has gathered in an attempt to break the world record for the biggest skinny dip. 'Secret Swimming', based in Oxfordshire, England, held its first meeting at Cornbury Park, reports Wired.co.uk. The group had never met each other before but the event saw good numbers attend the last-minute dip. Locations are kept secret as long as possible before being released to the club. The newly-formed group aims to bring individuals together to swim in the most scenic locations, completely nude. The idea came from Fabien Riggall, the creator of Secret Cinema. Secret Swimming describes itself as "a worldwide community of underwater (more)...

Moviegoers today want more than a seat and a bucket of popcorn. They want an interactive experience – and Secret Cinema gives them just that
"The traditional way of film distribution," says Fabien Riggall, "just isn't working any more." But finding a fix can be fun – and lucrative. Riggall has cooked up a way to send cinemagoers home happy, despite them having to cough up £35 to spend a couple of hours in a disused warehouse before watching a film whose title they didn't know beforehand – and may well have already seen.
Since 2007, Secret Cinema has screened classics such as Lawrence of Arabia and Alien to a largely delighted and seriously large group of people who can interact beforehand with film-specific sets and installations and actors clad as characters from the movie. It's theme-park sweding; irreverent cultural engagement for kidult cineastes. The rent, staffing and insurance overheads must be enormous. But the...

Film about rioting on streets of Paris resonates with audience on estate where Mark Duggan grew up
In the shadows of the carpark on the Broadwater Farm estate in Tottenham, north London, three young men sit in a car, hoods over their heads, eyes down on their BlackBerrys. Another balances on his bike by the open window. A few paces away a queue is beginning to form outside the estate's community centre for a showing of the French film La Haine – which starts with images of angry young men rioting on the streets of Paris and ends with one of the main characters being shot by police.
"I don't understand why they are showing a film like that here, it's peak," says one of the young men, explaining for the Guardian's benefit that "peak" means "a bit terrible". Asked why, he says, as though to a child: "Our friend was shot by a police officer,...

Film of gritty Paris suburbs to be shown by Future Cinema with Asian Dub Foundation live score on Broadwater Farm Estate
When the film La Haine was released in 1995, it sent shockwaves through French society with its gritty portrayal of urban youth in the bleak suburbs of Paris. Seventeen years later, the film is to be screened in Tottenham, north London, where the UK riots began in summer 2011.
Screened by the interactive company Future Cinema, the film will be shown on the eve of the London mayoral election and is intended to reopen debate about the causes of the riots while reaching out to young people on the Broadwater Farm estate, said founder Fabien Riggall.
"We believe cinema is a really powerful medium that is universal and should be available to everyone. This estate, and the most disadvantaged estates around the country, are full of creative and bright young people...

Children, and parents, revel in Future Cinema's interactive and immersive showing of classic film
Down an east London side street, a heavily made-up blonde wearing a cloche hat, figure-hugging skirt and fur shrug slinked down a snaking queue. "So," she drawled, stopping in front of a group of anxious men. "How ya doin' fellas? My name's Tallulah."
Nearby, a news hound questioned a couple about a recent splurge gun attack, while a dancer with an accent that seemed to have arrived in Chicago via the home counties asked a little boy if he was local, or from the Bronx. "I'm from Chiswick," he said quietly, a little perplexed.
In the Good Friday sunshine hundreds of parents and children in 1920s garb queued to get into Fat Sam's Grand Slam for a film screening with a difference.

Whether it's films on fridges or Cannes in a van, site-specific screenings are proving a summer hit. Here, the mavericks behind the magic tell us how to get in on the show
Pop-up cinema is having a moment. This month we've seen classic sports flicks projected on a mountain of discarded fridges, as well as fossil fuel-free film, (try saying that with a mouth full of popcorn), a picture house squeezed into a canal boat, another wedged inside a transit van, and not one but two cinemas sprouting from the disused space under motorways. Pop-up cinema is becoming as Augusty as Parisians bogging off for a month in the sun. So why not have a go yourself? This handy 10-step guide, comprised of top tips from the people driving the movement, will show you how.
Step 1. Create your I-wish-i'd-thought-of-that concept
"Context is really important," say Lindsey Scannapieco and Mat Triebner of Scout Limited.

From attention-grabbing promos to thoughtful documentaries, a new crop of directors is creating innovative and daring pictures that are cheap to make, easy to share, and finding an audience as never before. Here, we speak to those responsible for some of the best
Are we in the middle of a short‑film revolution? Not long ago, if you wanted to catch short work by exciting new film-makers, you had to travel to a festival, hunt down a compilation on DVD, catch a charitable showing on TV or, if you were uncommonly lucky, before the main feature at the cinema. Now all you have to do, assuming you have internet access and a passing familiarity with video-hosting websites, is switch on your computer.
The curious thing about short films is that, regardless of audience and financial incentive, people have continued to make them with great enthusiasm. This is in part because...

A grassroots movement, where audiences get to participate and experience films communally in unique locations, is the perfect antidote to the passivity of the modern multiplex
On the floor of the cavernous main hall inside Alexandra Palace – a glass-roofed exhibition centre in north London – three and a half thousand people dressed as Bedouins are sitting on cushions, watching Lawrence of Arabia riding a camel. A real camel, emitting real camel dung. And a real Lawrence, descending regally from his mount to announce the liberation of the city of Aqaba. "The Arabian peoples are victorious!" Lawrence proclaims. A cheer goes up from the crowd.
Welcome to the weird world of Secret Cinema, a bimonthly site-specific event that combines screenings of classic films – from Blade Runner to Bugsy Malone – in different venues around the UK, with unnervingly participatory theatrical happenings. It's by far the biggest (around 15,000 people attended last weekend's Lawrence of Arabia...

This week, Jason Solomons discovers the heated passion for soul music in the chilly north of England as revealed in SoulBoy, a coming-of-age tale tracing the musical awakening of a young man during the mid 70s. Lead actor Michael Compston, who made his name in Ken Loach's Sweet Sixteen, talks about spending a nervous month perfecting his dance steps. We also have two signed copies of the superb SoulBoy soundtrack to win.
Jason also talks to Fabien Riggall, the founder of Secret Cinema, which hosts screenings of classic films in strangely appropriate locations. Ahead of a mystery screening at Alexandra Palace, Riggall discusses the motivation behind Secret Cinema and the growing popularity of experiencing film outside the multiplex.
Plus, Xan Brooks joins Jason to review some of this week's other releases, including Dinner for Schmucks, starring Steve Carell and Paul Rudd, and Certified Copy, starring Juliette Binoche.

The concept of Secret Cinema is changing the way we watch films and winning rave reviews. Since it began in 2007, they’ve screened movies under London Bridge (Gus Van Sant’s Paranoid Park), Canary Wharf (Blade Runner) and other highly unusual places.
For movie lovers it is a chance to experience something exciting and mysterious in which you’ll end up having a bloody good time! It’s not just about sitting down to watch a film either. There’s an interactive aspect which recently saw the screening of Blade Runner in a warehouse transformed into a set with over 100 actors and live music.
They’ve organised events from the secret venues revealed a few days before the event. The film is revealed upon arrival. Secret Cinema screen all genres and eras, cult classics, golden oldies and exclusive preview screenings of eagerly anticipated upcoming releases. Surprising site-specific locations from five-star...
