When better than the spooky season, with Halloween fast approaching, to get a behind-the-scenes look at the perfect show for this time of the year? TV Insider got MeTV‘s Svengoolie (Rich Koz) to give us just that in our exclusive video above. A fun fact about what he says is a lot of people’s favorite part of the show, “my song with musical director Doug Graves,” is “the truth is the very first time we put the lyrics and song together is right before we record it. Doug puts the music track together on his own, doing the parts of the tune I request and I write the words independent of him. So when we get on the set, we usually do one rehearsal to make sure it’ll work and then record the song for the show.” When it comes to his dream guests, Svengoolie names “that...

Who better to take a look at some classic monsters and judge them based on scare (and danger!) level than MeTV‘s Svengoolie (Rich Koz)? Well, that’s exactly what TV Insider got him to do in our exclusive video for the spooky month ahead of Halloween. So if he was in a room with the Mummy, Wolf Man, Dracula, Frankenstein, and Gill-man, who would he be the most afraid of? That’s easy, for Svengoolie: “The Wolf Man because he’s a wild animal, and there’s no reasoning with him.” After that, he picks Dracula, pointing out, “he’s got that hypnotic power and you have no way to fight him before he’d drained all your blood.” He admits he’s not as worried about the Mummy, since, “as every comedian in the business has joked, [he] moves so slowly dragging that one leg, you can easily outrun him,...

MeTV is celebrating its second annual “Svengoolie’s Halloween BOOnanza,” and TV Insider had the chance to sit with the maestro of the spooky to talk about his essential horror viewing for the macabre holiday. When we asked, “What are your five essential scary horror moves that you’d recommend for everyone to watch this October,” Rich Koz (A.K.A. Svengoolie) replied, “Well, first, your chance of any one of the original first appearances of the Universal Monsters, be it Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy, The Wolfman, and of course, The Creature From The Black Lagoon.” Naturally, these are the cornerstones of cinematic horror, and as Svengoolie says above, “and you need to respect that!” For his second choice, he quickly chooses “The Blob, a truly original horror from the ’50s.” And third, “the original Invaders From Mars, very similar to the Invaders of the Body Snatchers,...

The legendary horror icon Rich Koz (aka Svengoolie) has returned to television as part of MeTV‘s October slate of scary movies. Beginning Saturday, October 8, the block is scheduled to premiere It! Terror From Beyond Space, followed by The Addams Family [October 9], The Twilight Zone [October 16], Alfred Hitchcock Presents [October 23], and, of course, Kolchak: The Night Stalker. As part of New York Comic Con 2022, the horror meister sat down with Damian Holbrook in the TV Insider and TV Guide Magazine video suite to discuss Svengoolie’s Halloween BOOnanza, his origins, his favorite horror movies, and the greater Sven Universe, which is inhabited by thousands of his most loyal fans. When asked about his start as a local TV host making jabs at horror movies, he explained it all began with the original Svengoolie in Chicago, Jerry G. Bishop, a radio and TV guy Koz was working with and writing for at the time.

Our favorite horror meister is celebrating October in style! Played since 1979 by Rich Koz, Svengoolie (above) is a Chicago camp legend who’s earned a rabid fan following around the country, the world and even far, far away — Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill, has tweeted about his love for the show! MeTV is devoting the month to Svengoolie’s special brand of tricks and treats, including his über-popular weekly movie series. Saturday, October 8th’s viewing: It! Terror From Beyond Space, a schlocky 1958 frightfest about a doomed rescue mission to Mars. The Addams Family (Credit: Everett Collection) “Despite some cheesiness, this film is actually cited as a big influence on the 1979 sci-fi blockbuster Alien,” Koz says. “It’s fun to note the similarities between the two.” There’s plenty more eye candy in store in the weeks ahead, like spooky episodes of old-time favorites, plus show marathons. “BOOnanza does not...

“Svengoolie” is growing. The MeTV horror host, whose first primetime special on the classic TV network aired this weekend, is spearheading a nationwide talent search to find fans to appear in “Svengoolie” off-shoots.
The campaign, dubbed “Spawn of Svengoolie,” was announced on October 1 at the conclusion of “Svengoolie Uncrypted,” a one-hour special that followed the character, played by Rich Koz, as he escaped his dungeon and explored the world — and showcased the more than 43 years of the character.
“Svengoolie” has been a local Chicago TV staple for more than four decades; Weigel Broadcasting, which owns MeTV, added the character to its national lineup in 2011. More recently, the network noticed an uptick in viewership on Saturday nights, particularly during the pandemic, as horror fans stayed home to watch “Svengoolie’s” campy and often obscure horror films, and more importantly, Svengoolie’s horror movie facts, trivia and corny dad jokes.

Chicago – David Dastmalchian is always looking up … both at his soaring career and how he can spread his particular brand of positive vibes. The actor will appear in two huge 2021 films, “The Suicide Squad” (Aug 6th)) and “Dune” (Oct 1st). And don’t forget his co-created comic “Count Crowley” and his appearance at Mid May Massacre, May 15-16, 2021.
David Dastmalchian achieved blockbuster notoriety as the Russian Kurt, part of the “Antourage” in the Marvel Universe “Ant-Man” films. But he also has created two indie films, with his award winning “Animals” (2014) and “All Creatures Here Below” (2018), directed by his creative partner Collin Schiffli. On TV, he’s had memorable parts on the rebooted “Macgyver” as Murdoc, and the villain Abra Kadabra on DC’s “The Flash.” He also is in the Hulu series “Reprisal,” and has roles in two high-profile films in 2021, “Dune” and “The Suicide Squad.” David is one of the humblest,...

Two personal highlights for me at this year’s convention have to be the Scream Reunion Screening and Q&A on Saturday evening, featuring Neve Campbell, Skeet Ulrich, and Matthew Lillard, as well as seeing Don Coscarelli returning to Flashback, this time with Phantasm: Remastered in tow.

According to the Chicago Media Blog, Koz, 60, was stricken at his home Saturday night and was admitted to a Chicago hospital, where he was being treated Monday.
On his Svengoolie Twitter and Facebook accounts Sunday, the following message was posted: “After a very busy Halloween holiday season, I’ll be taking a short reprieve from updating my blog. Daily updates will return soon!”
Koz, who has a history of heart problems, suffered a heart attack in March 2002. He returned to work two months later after undergoing two angioplasty procedures. “Maybe it’s a good thing that rubber chickens are cholesterol-free,” he quipped at the time.
“Rich’s condition is improving and his family has asked for privacy at this time,” Neal Sabin,...

Horror fans today are spoiled. With the vast array of films available on DVD and Blu-ray via storefronts like Best Buy and Fye, online outlets like Amazon and Deep Discount, and rental/streaming services such as Netflix, there are few films that are unattainable. Virtually anything one might hear of is available some way, somewhere. But it wasn't always so...
Back at a time before disc (or VHS for that matter), the only way - and I mean the Only way - to see classic and not so classic genre pictures was on broadcast television. As a kid, I remember getting the local TV Guide and a yellow highlighter and systematically going through the listings, marking each and every show time of movies I'd heard about either from friends or ones that were obliquely mentioned in Forry Ackerman's Famous Monsters of Filmland . I would meticulously go over each entry...

Illinois is the Horror Capital of the World.
Sure, some might disagree with me - including my distant cousins in the New York faction of the Fango Family, but I will always defend the Land of Lincoln as the premiere location for all things horror.
Haddonfield? Illinois. Crystal Lake? Illinois. Elm Street? The new Nightmare is filming in... Illinois. There's some spooky things and creepy places spread throughout the state, but out in the suburb of Berwyn, mere blocks from Chicago-proper, there is a place where everyday is Halloween, and Fango Fiends are embraced with severed arms.
Horrorbles is the ultimate destination for horror fans - a one-stop shop for all things horror and sci- fi featuring movies, one-of-a-kind and limited edition collectibles, figures, apparel, books, magazines, gag gifts and more. It's also the official merchandising partner of Fangoria Entertainment, and tonight it celebrated it's Grand Re-opening in it's newly-expanded home.

So, you may have recently read some of my other work on the site (Fangoria Musick), and wondered what the hell I’m doing here, amongst other things. I’d like to address that by taking a moment to drop all the masks, pretenses, and gimmicks. Even more so, I’d like to give you a glimpse of the fan beneath the fiction. This is the real Ben, not Benny Hell, speaking, and it’s with hat in hand that I write this for you today. Let me tell you a little about myself.
I grew up in Chicago during the 1980’s. I was a lot like most kids -I played in the sun, became horrendously enamored with all things He-Man, Transformers, and Star Wars, thought Andre Dawson of the Cubs was the greatest baseball player ever --and loved riding my bike in the busy streets around my Logan Square home.
