Dominated by Reality and Nonfiction categories, the opening night of the 2020 Creative Arts Emmy Awards was a rather stilted affair on Monday. Making almost every non-technical misstep possible, the Nicole Byer hosted show still somehow managed to be boring as well.
Streaming Monday to Thursday on the TV Academy website and airing on Fxx on September 19, things started out promising and traditional enough with a nighttime crane shot from outside the organization’s North Hollywood complex.
“Ordinarily, we’d be having this show in a packed theater somewhere in Los Angeles,” Nailed It host and Emmy nominee Byer said in the pre-record opening monologue. “But as we know, there’s nothing ordinary about 2020, it’s wild,” Byer added with understatement in a year that has seen the Creative Arts Emmys, Hollywood and almost everything else transformed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It’s with no disrespect to any of this year’s other Emmy-nominated cinematographers that I say no one else went as far to capture their footage than Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, who are nominated for Best Cinematography for a Nonfiction Program for lensing the CNN documentary “Apollo 11.” They literally went to the moon and back. Can the legendary astronauts, who are 90-years-old and 89-years-old, respectively, be rewarded in 2020 for their historic footage?

The Cinema Audio Society has announced its nominations for 2020, giving awards season favorites such as “Joker,” “The Irishman,” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” added momentum as the Oscars draw closer. Previously announced honorees at the 2020 Cinema Audio Society awards will be James Mangold as Cas Filmmaker and Re-recording Mixer Tom Fleischman as the Cas Career Achievement Honoree. The latter award will be presented by Martin Scorsese.
In a statement announcing this year’s nominations, Cinema Audio Society president Karol Urban said, “Each year I am gobsmacked by the impressive level of craftsmanship and artistry that is brought to
