Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King is slated for a year-end release. The upcoming prequel to 2019’s adventure musical The Lion King is helmed by filmmaker Barry Jenkins who has made Oscar-winning films like If Beale Street Could Talk and Moonlight.
Jenkins recently appeared at CinemaCon 2024 and discussed his new Disney venture. The Moonlight director also addressed the biggest criticism his prequel film and its 2019 predecessor faced. Many fans doubt if 2024’s Mufasa: The Lion King will also walk down the same path as director Jon Favreau’s film.

Disney is welcoming the king of the Pride Lands back to Las Vegas. The studio unveiled a stirring, all-new trailer of “Mufasa: The Lion King” on Thursday at CinemaCon, the annual convention for movie theater owners.
“Mufasa: The Lion King” is expected to focus on the early years of the eventual ruler of the animals, as well as his menacing younger brother Scar. The film will feature the voices of Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as the younger version of Mufasa (voiced by James Earl Jones in the 1994 film and 2019 remake) and Scar (voiced by Jeremy Irons in the 1994 version and Chiwetel Ejiofor in the 2019 remake).
The brief but majestic footage, which isn’t yet available to the public, explores the same stunningly realistic African savannah as its predecessor and begins with the iconic “Lion King” overture. A young Mufasa is seen leaping over rhinos and all kinds of...

Mufasa: The Lion King is coming out of the shadows and beginning to practice its roar.
On Tuesday, Disney and director Barry Jenkins played the movie’s first teaser trailer for theater owners gathered together this week in Las Vegas for CinemaCon. The teaser received a resounding round of applause for its stunning visuals and tone, and will be released in the coming weeks.
“It’s an expansive adventure,” said Jenkins when taking the stage.
The curiosity factor is running high when it comes to Mufasa. The music-infused film is an origin story and follow-up to Jon Favreau’s 2019 photorealistic movie The Lion King, which in turn was based on the 1994 Disney animated classic. “The film features the same immersive, photoreal environment that wowed audiences the first time,” said Disney global distribution president Tony Chambers.

Hmm… it seems that Zack Snyder’s Watchmen wasn’t so controversial after all. Although the film was great to every extent, it simply felt too modern for audiences who were just starting to fall in love with superhero movies like Iron Man.
Despite being an underrated film, many directors were involved with the project long before Zack Snyder took the reins. Notable among them was The Bourne Supremacy director Paul Greengrass and his idea of the opening scene of Watchmen was dark dark!

The Gritty Opening Scene of Watchmen Would Have Referenced Superman!
Paul Greengrass’ fame skyrocketed through the roof after he directed the 2004 film The Bourne Supremacy starring Matt Damon in the lead role. Just a year after that, Greengrass was working on the 2009 DC project Watchmen.

Although the partnership was short-lived, Paul Greengrass had already envisioned how the film was going to be.

In the early 2000s, Disney had a knack for making sequels to their beloved animated classics, which were often a notable step down from the original, in both the writing and animation department. But we can look past these subpar sequels, as they were meant for DVD/Video release, thus it didn’t leave a lasting impact on the legacy of the classics.
However, Disney’s trend of remaking acclaimed classics is a whole new low, as not only are they often a step down in quality, but also close the gates for the new generation to experience the originals. Moreover, several things that made the animated releases special often don’t translate well into live-action, with The Lion King being the most infamous example. And fans are once again riled up against Disney’s upcoming Mufasa flick.

It took a village of creatives at Disney Animation to pull off “Once Upon a Studio,” the animated short that celebrates 100 years of stories and magic. Iconic characters like Snow White and Peter Pan feature alongside Robin Williams’ Genie in a cast of 543 characters from more than 85 feature-length and short films. And it all came together without any artificial intelligence involved.
Directors Dan Abraham and Trent Correy were seeking a way to honor the studio’s legacy. “Once Upon a Studio” takes place at the end of a work day at Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank. The studio becomes a magical place once Disney Legend Burny Mattinson, who worked there for 70 years on films such as “Lady and the Tramp” (1955) and “One Hundred and One Dalmatians” (1961), leaves. Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse step out of a photo and call for their friends to gather for an official 100th Anniversary Studio portrait.

Randy Fullmer, an effects animator, visual effects supervisor, artistic coordinator and producer who worked at Disney for almost 20 years, has died after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 73.
Over his nearly two decades at Disney, he did everything from work on the Toon Town portion of “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” (his first gig at the studio) to working as an artistic coordinator on “The Lion King” to producing full Disney features like “The Emperor’s New Groove” and “Chicken Little.” A key and unsung player in the Disney Renaissance of the ‘80s and ‘90s, Fullmer’s legacy will live on.
Fullmer, who died July 10, in Woodland Hills, California, attended the California Institute of the Arts, a school co-founded by Walt Disney. After Fullmer graduated in 1974, he spent time working with Don Bluth, the Disney hotshot whose departure from the studio nearly crippled the animation department. Fullmer joined Bluth on his...

James Corden's time as a late-night host has officially come to an end. And what better way to bid farewell to "The Late Late Show" than to call upon his buddy Tom Cruise, don a meerkat costume, and join in on a Broadway performance of "The Lion King"? Yes, really.
The concept of James Corden and Tom Cruise crashing a Broadway show might sound insane, but just take a moment to truly process those words. In a way, this was the inevitable conclusion of Corden's late-night reign.
Since taking over "The Late Late Show" in 2015, Corden has been finding new (and increasingly strange) ways to combine his love of theater with the star-studded nature of his talk show. This has led to performance-heavy recurring segments like "Carpool Karaoke," "Drop The Mic" and "Riff-Off." When the opportunity arises, Corden's love of Broadway takes centerstage, so it only makes sense for...

It’s the end of an era on CBS, as James Corden said his last goodbye to the Late Late Show on Thursday, April 27, which included a star-studded line-up of special guests. The finale was preceded by a Carpool Karaoke special, which featured the late-night host and Tom Cruise performing songs from The Lion King at the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles. After previously taking part in high-octane activities like skydiving and flying a fighter jet, Corden invited Cruise to “enter my world.” Joining the Lion King cast on stage, Corden and Cruise performed renditions of “The Circle of Life” and “Hakuna Matata” while dressed as Timon (Corden) and Pumbaa (Cruise). The special also saw Corden taking part in one final Carpool Karaoke segment with his good friend Adele. As the multi-time Grammy winner drove the host to Television City studio for the last time, they looked back at the success of the show.

After more than eight years, “The Late Late Show With James Corden” has come to an end. The affable host made his final appearance on Thursday, and was joined by some famous friends and surprise guests.
Before the actual finale, Corden hosted a primetime special that featured pre-taped segments — including his final “Carpool Karaoke” with Adele, which was released online ahead of the finale episode.
The primetime special also featured some fun moments with his longtime friend and stunt-buddy Tom Cruise doing something to truly get their adrenaline pumped up — live musical theatre. The pair, donning animal costumes, performed on stage in Hollywood in scenes from The Lion King, and it was truly something unique.

When you think about George of the Jungle, Brendan Fraser‘s ripped body is probably the first thing that comes to mind. The 1997 movie is one of Fraser’s most beloved films for several reasons. While the actor delivered a great performance as the fish-out-of-water George, he was uncomfortable filming the movie.

Disney’s newly returned CEO Bob Iger said employees currently working a hybrid schedule will be asked to spend four days a week on-site as of March 1, targeting Monday through Thursday as in-person workdays, saying it’s his “belief that working together more in-person will benefit the Company’s creativity, culture, and our employees’ careers.”
“I’ve been meeting with teams throughout the Company over the past few months, I’ve been reminded of the tremendous value in being together with the people you work with. As you’ve heard me say many times, creativity is the heart and soul of who we are and what we do at Disney. And in a creative business like ours, nothing can replace the ability to connect, observe, and create with peers that comes from being physically together, nor the opportunity to grow professionally by learning from leaders and mentors,’ the CEO, who...

Credit: The Lion King Fans of The Lion King must love the king before the main protagonist, Simba, and his wise and brave father, the honorable Mufasa. As far as Disney fathers go, this anthropomorphic lion has to be the best one. And if we’re ranking death scenes in animated Disney movies, his death probably made you cry the most. The fact that he was murdered by his own brother made it even more tragic. This iconic character was only in the movie for about half the runtime, but for the time he was in the movie, he surely cemented

“The Lion King,” a Disney Media Franchise, commemorated its 26th anniversary this past June. It is a genuine archetypal that can captivate audiences of all ages. The first Lion King film in the series was produced in 1994.
According to Environment Weekly, there were more than 600 animators involved in the production of “The Lion King” including animators, technicians, and other crucial figures. In fact, every moment was arduously explored, reorganized, and refined again which cost a lot of money, time, and a lot of headaches. And here’s the result – the great movie “The Lion King.”
The key to its success comes from its skilfully constructed characters who frequently walk and act like their real-life equivalents. The real-life lions were brought to the studio for the animators to study.

“Aladdin” is one of the most beloved Disney movies of all time. The story of a poor street urchin who falls in love with a princess and must defeat an evil sorcerer has captivated audiences for generations. While the animated classic is the most well-known version of the story, there have been several live-action and animated sequels and spin-offs.
The original film was released in 1992 and told the story of a young boy discovering a magic lamp that grants him three wishes. This Disney media franchise-based film was a critical and commercial success, and in June 2019, Walt Disney Pictures released a live-action remake of the film, which starred Will Smith as the Genie.
The remake was met with mixed reviews but still grossed over 1 billion at the worldwide box office.

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
Attention, Marvel and DC! Julia Roberts would love to be in a superhero movie.
When I suggested the idea to the Oscar winner at the “Ticket to Paradise” premiere in L.A., she beamed, “Wouldn’t it be awesome?”
Her co-star George Clooney added, “We should do one — you and me!”
However, Roberts isn’t looking to don a cape for her comic book movie debut. “Maybe an apron,” she said. “Is there a superhero apron?”
Meanwhile, Clooney, who infamously played the Caped Crusader in 1997’s “Batman & Robin,” revealed that his 5-year-old son Alexander’s favorite superhero is … Batman. “I said, ‘You know I was Batman?’” Clooney smiled. “And he was like, ‘Not anymore.’”
“Ticket to Paradise” marks Roberts and Clooney’s first rom-com together. “I read it and thought, ‘This only works with George,’ and he felt the same way,...

Mark Kermode has delivered a film review for the history books.
The critic shared his review of new release Blackbird, which is a passion project by Lord of the Dance creator Michael Flatley.
Flatley writes, directs and stars in the film, which he has described as “a tribute to the golden age of cinema”. However, according to Kermode: “I think a session on the golden toilet of cinema is closer.”
The film, which Kermode called “mind-bendingly terrible”, follows a retired secret agent whose past comes back to haunt him after he opens a nightclub in Barbados.
Reviews of the film have branded it “fabulously bad” and “oddly entertaining” – but Kermode has gone out on a limb to call Blackbird “genuinely one of the worst films I have ever seen”, telling his followers: “And as we all know, I’ve seen Oversexed Rugsuckers From Mars, I’ve seen Exorcist II: The Heretic,...

Scarlett is Kobe Blaise and Emily Bieberly’s second child.
Kobe Blaise recently posted a darling photo of him and Scarlett enjoying some much-needed quality time.
Kobe held baby Scarlett in one hand up to the sky in a very Lion King style manner.
Scarlett had nothing but smiles and a cuteness overload to offer to the photo.
Kobe captioned the photo by saying, “Just love how Scarlett smiles at almost everything. She’s Daddy’s little angel [angel with halo emoji].”

3rd Update, Sunday Am: Nope, despite its B CinemaScore and 79 PostTrak, did not exactly fall apart between Friday and Saturday. If you back out those 6.4M previews out of Friday’s 19.59M, that means the Jordan Peele pic’s first day was 13.19M, and with Saturday at 13.95M, that’s a 6 rise. All of this results in a 44M opening.
While not the 17 rise that Us got over its Friday to Saturday (sans previews), Nope didn’t crater.
While not Us, it’s a respectable result for an original movie, and Universal has shown a talent to make and support those types of movies where some other motion picture studios fall flat. Again, the start for Nope is higher than late summer 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (41M), also a piece of original IP, and higher than Warner Bros.’ Elvis (31.2M), another adult counterprogramming title this summer.

Following its sold-out Off Broadway Encores! run this past spring, the revival of Into The Woods continued drawing audiences in the first performances of its Broadway transfer, filling 94 of seats at the St. James Theatre and grossing a big 1,380,760.
The revival of the James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim classic, featuring a cast that includes Sara Bareilles, Brian D’Arcy James, Patina Miller, Phillipa Soo and Gavin Creel, which officially opens July 10, helped keep Broadway box office steady last week. In all, the 28 productions grossed a total 29,926,106, a tiny 2.8 slip from the previous week.
Attendance for the week ending July 3 was 238,943, a 4.2 increase from the previous week. Average ticket price dropped from 134 to 125 over the week.
Part of the overall b.o. dip can be attributed to a previously scheduled shortened week for Plaza Suite, the smash Neil Simon revival starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick. The show played only six performances,...

Uwe Boll's latest will release June 1st on DVD through Phase 4 Films (Rampage). Boll is often regarded as one of the worst directors in cinema. However, there are some films of Boll's that have turned out digestable e.g. Tunnel Rats. Rampage could turn out to be one of his better films based on reviews. In Rampage Bill starts a one man war with society. Guess who wins? The DVD artwork can be seen here with a synopsis below. Is Boll transitioning into a quality filmmaker? That might be a stretch at this point. Yet, Darfur and Rampage both have potential. A trailer for this release is inside.
The synopsis for Rampage here:
"The boredom of small town life is eating Bill Williamson alive. Feeling constrained and claustrophobic in the meaningless drudgery of everyday life and helpless against overwhelming global dissolution, Bill (Brendan Fletcher) begins a descent into madness.
