Channing Dungey first joined Warner Bros. TV Group as chairman in late 2020 — right in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, which made for an interesting first year on the job. Then came the Warner Media-Discovery merger in 2022, and the restructuring that came with it. In 2023, the Hollywood strikes disrupted the business again.
“It’s been a lot of tumult since I’ve been in the role,” Dungey recently reflected to Variety. “I’m hoping — and I’m knocking wood as I say this — that as we round the corner into 2024, we’re behind some of those bigger challenges. I’m sure there will be something new on the horizon, but I’m hopeful that 2024 marks a return to business as usual.”
The entertainment industry remains in flux, of course, with more disruption anticipated this year. But in her own corner of the biz, Dungey said she feels some truly positive momentum.

Apple TV+’s post-apocalyptic science fiction series Silo (read our 8/10 review Here) is based on a series of stories written by author Hugh Howey. It started with a short story called Wool, and at one point the plan was to call the Apple TV+ series Wool as well. There’s plenty of Howey stories to continue pulling inspiration from is Silo has a multiple season run: Holston, Proper Gauge, Casting Off, The Stranded, Legacy, Order, Pact, and Dust... with more to come. And it looks like Apple TV+ is interesting in bringing some of those stories to the screen, because Deadline reports they have officially ordered Silo season 2!
Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+, provided the following statement: “It has been enormously fulfilling to see the engrossing, atmospheric and beautifully crafted sci-fi epic Silo quickly become Apple’s number one drama series. As audiences around the world have...

The Writers Guild of America 2023 strike is continuing to make a dent in upcoming Hollywood projects.
The strike began May 2, with multiple productions halting in solidarity with the demonstrations. The WGA strike took effect after six weeks of unsuccessful negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, representing the likes of Netflix, Disney, Apple, NBCUniversal, Warner Bros., Paramount, Amazon, and more. Writers are demanding better pay, residuals structures, and protection against AI as a replacement tool for their work, among other concerns.
While the strike has not yet affected some upcoming consecutive seasons of fan-favorite shows, “Saturday Night Live” and a handful of late-night talk shows including Jimmy Kimmel, “The Late Show,” and “The Tonight Show” have gone dark. Manhattan picketers have also protested outside filming on the latest season of “Billions,” though the long-running Showtime series has yet to come to a full stop.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming plans in India have come into focus. The studio unveiled a multiyear deal Thursday with Viacom18 that will make the Indian entertainment giant’s JioCinema streaming platform the new online home of thousands of hours of film and TV content from HBO, Max Original and Warner Bros.
Wbd content was previously licensed in India by Disney’s Star TV, but that deal expired in March. Wbd and Viacom18 say their new partnership, which begins in May, includes exclusive content rights across digital and linear. And users will be able to watch HBO Original, Max Original and Warner Bros. Television series on JioCinema on the same day as their U.S. release.
The new deal adds to growing market sway of Viacom18’s streaming channels, which in 2022 acquired all digital rights for five years to Indian Premier League cricket, India’s most popular sporting event by far.

Warner Bros. Discovery and Viacom18 have revealed a multi-year agreement making JioCinema India’s new streaming home for HBO, Max Original and Warner Bros. content from May.
The Wbd content had previously been carried on the Disney-owned Star TV platform. But the deal with Star expired at the end of March. Wbd sources have confirmed that, except for a handful of shows licensed to third parties, HBO content has been absent from Indian airwaves since the beginning of the month.
The new deal is another major victory for Mukesh Ambani, one of India’s richest and most politically influential businessmen. His Reliance Industries Limited (Ril) is behind Viacom18 and the JioCinema streaming platform, as well as India’s dominant cellular phone and broadband internet providers.

It's been a weird old time for JJ Abrams of late. Despite still being one of the most powerful creatives and producers working in the industry, he's seen his projects take a hit — a giant deal with Warner Bros. Discovery has seen slow development and several cancellations (including a Justice League Dark series), and Paramount has seen little forward movement on the Star Trek movie front – but it appears that the former relationship is finally paying off again as he as set up new series Duster at HBO Max starring Lost veteran Josh Holloway alongside Rachel Hilson.

For those like me who pay way too much attention to these sorts of things, you may remember the news that filmmaker J.J. Abrams had signed an immensely profitable deal with Warner Bros. Discovery. This enabled him to write, produce, and direct various projects on both the big screen and small, with the freedom to sell certain projects to other distributors as well as producing original stories for Warner Bros. and HBO Max. Discerning readers may also recall that, in the years since, absolutely nothing has actually come from that high-profile agreement -- not for lack of trying, mind you. There was that double-whammy announcement of a "Justice League Dark" project and a spin-off of "The Shining" called "Overlook" that had nerds everywhere all hyped up. Unfortunately, those ultimately never came to fruition for various reasons, along with an incredibly expensive sci-fi series called "Demimonde."

The project remained in limbo since then, with HBO Max labeling it “in development.” The time has come for HBO Max to give Duster a series order after shooting a pilot episode.
Duster stars Rachel Hilson as Nina, the first Black FBI agent, who, in 1972, travels to the Southwest and gains a getaway driver, played by Josh Holloway. Together, the duo aims to take down a crime syndicate taking root in the area. Keith David, Sydney Elisabeth, Greg Grunberg, Camille Guaty, Asivak Koostachin, Adriana Aluna Martinez, and Benjamin Charles Watson also star.

J.J. Abrams and HBO Max are officially putting a series into gear.
The streamer has picked up Duster, a 1970s-set drama from Abrams and Latoya Morgan (Into the Badlands, The Walking Dead). Rachel Hilson (Love, Victor, This Is Us) and Josh Holloway, who worked with Abrams on Lost, head the cast.
Duster is the first series to spring from a nine-figure film and TV deal Abrams’ Bad Robot company signed with WarnerMedia (now Warner Bros. Discovery) in 2019. In April 2020, Duster was one of three Bad Robot projects announced for the yet-to-launch HBO Max, along with The Shining offshoot Overlook and a Justice League Dark project. The latter two have since been scrapped (Bad Robot has shopped Overlook to other possible buyers), as has Abrams’ long-developing sci-fi series Demimonde (which was for the HBO parent channel) after concerns over its projected 200 million-plus budget.

The great George A. Romero is no longer with us, but his Dead series is still shambling forward. Nikyatu Jusu (Nanny) has signed on to direct a sequel to Night of the Living Dead from a screenplay by Latoya Morgan (The Walking Dead), with Romero’s ex-wife Christine Romero and their daughter Tina Romero producing. The George A. Romero Foundation is working with Bloody Disgusting on an audio series podcast set in the Dead universe. Greg Nicotero is gearing up to make a movie about the making of Night of the Living Dead. So while we wait to see which one of those projects is going to make its way out into the world first, we figured this was a good time to put together a Wtf You Need to Know video that gathers information on the Romero Dead films – and you can check it out in the embed above!

Last month, it was announced that MGM acquired the worldwide distribution rights for a sequel to George A. Romero’s 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead (watch it Here), with Nikyatu Jusu (Nanny) on board to direct the film from a screenplay by Latoya Morgan (The Walking Dead) and Romero’s ex-wife Christine Romero and their daughter Tina Romero producing. Now Deadline has broken the news that Night of the Living Dead is also getting an audio series podcast follow-up called The Dead, and this project is coming to us from the George A. Romero Foundation and the Cinedigm-backed Bloody Disgusting.
The Dead will tell new stories and expand characters from the Night of the Living Dead universe. The podcast series will consist of 24 episodes, which will be released through the Cinedigm Podcast Network. As Deadline notes, “Writers will be chosen to pen the stories following an application process through which the George A.

Amazon’s MGM division is in final negotiations for worldwide distribution rights to a “Night of the Living Dead” sequel from director Nikyatu Jusu. The follow-up to George Romero’s horror classic will come courtesy of Village Roadshow Pictures, Vertigo Entertainment, Westbrook, Origin Story and the late Romero’s Sanibel Films.
Presuming the distribution deal comes to pass, the film, penned by “The Walking Dead” scribe Latoya Morgan, will be distributed by MGM as a theatrical release.
Released in 1968, “Night of the Living Dead” is considered one of the most influential and profitable theatrical films ever made. It essentially birthed the modern zombie movie (and the modern MPA ratings system) upon its release and led to decades of rip-offs, homages and zombie-specific media such as “The Walking Dead,” “Resident Evil” and Romero’s own ongoing zombie series like “Dawn of the Dead” in 1978 and “Survival of the Dead” in 2009.

George A. Romero‘s Night of the Living Dead property looks to be coming back to life with a brand new movie project shambling our way, Deadline reports this morning.
Deadline’s report indicates that “Village Roadshow Pictures has partnered with Chris Romero and the late George A. Since the distributor failed to put a copyright notice on the film, George A. Romero‘s 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead was released directly into the public domain. Because of that, anyone can release it, remake it, sequelize it, profit off of it in any way they want. And many have. So it’s not surprising to hear the announcement that a Night of the Living Dead sequel is in the works. What’s pleasantly surprising is that this one has the official backing of Romero’s ex-wife Christine Romero!

I guess it was only a matter of time before someone decided to reboot George A. Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" for modern audiences. We're inundated with the bastard children of Romero's landmark zombie film, from AMC's "The Walking Dead" to even video games like "The Last of Us." None of those exist without Romero's original "Night of the Living Dead," so of course, some folks are wanting to dive back into that well.

Warner Bros. Discovery is shutting down its Television Workshop for up-and-coming writers and directors, as well as its digital shortform programming division, Stage 13, TheWrap has confirmed. The news comes amid further layoffs that are expected to hit the newly merged conglomerate.
Stage 13 was established in 2017, while the writers workshop has been around for four decades, with the 2022-23 season being the last. Both of these ventures are planned to be folded into development and current programming. While neither program was founded with the initiative of specifically supporting talent from underrepresented backgrounds, both eventually became a pipeline through which rising and diverse talent could break into the industry.
As part of the Warner Bros. Television Group and formed under the previous Warner Bros. Digital Networks, Stage 13 was an award-winning studio and production company “dedicated to amplifying intersectional stories and championing creators from underrepresented communities,” according to its site. Warner Bros. Discovery will be shutting down its long-running writers’ and directors’ television workshops at the end of the current 2022-23 season, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
While they were not specifically diversity programs exclusively for participants from historically excluded backgrounds, the Warner Bros. Television Workshop was regarded as an important pipeline of opportunity for such artists looking to break into the business. The writers’ workshop had been in existence for more than 40 years, with more recent notable alumni including Akela Cooper (Luke Cage, Blumhouse’s upcoming M3GAN), Zak Schwartz (Wu-Tang: An American Saga, TNT’s Snowpiercer) and Latoya Morgan (The Walking Dead, Into the Badlands). Alumni of the directors’ workshop include Jude Weng (Only Murders in the Building, Finding ‘Ohana), Jaffar Mahmood (Reboot, Young Sheldon) and Regina King.
Last month, Wbd restructured its diversity, equity and inclusion group, with senior vice president Karen Horne,...

Exclusive: Jennifer Garner has pulled out of the long-in-the-works Apple TV+ limited series My Glory Was I Had Such Friends, from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot and Warner Bros. TV. As a result, the streamer has opted not to go forward with the project that it had landed with a straight-to-series order in 2018. Reps for Apple, Bad Robot, Wbtv and Garner declined comment.
According to sources, Garner exited My Glory Was I Had Such Friend for scheduling reasons. The show has taken quite awhile to get off the ground, and the Alias alumna is currently filming another Apple TV+ limited series, The Last Thing He Told Me, an adaptation of Laura Dave’s bestselling novel, which is produced by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine.
Wbtv and Bad Robot are said to both be high on My Glory Was I Had Such Friend and intend to seek another home for it,...

More than 50 prominent showrunners, including J.J. Abrams, Shonda Rhimes and Mike Schur, have signed the WGA West’s Safe and Inclusive Workplace Pledge, committing to “partner with the guild in developing best practices proven to drive change, alongside support programs for the wider show-running community that ensure every leader has the tools and understanding necessary to create workplaces in which all members can thrive.”
The guild’s Showrunner Initiative Committee said in a message to the guild’s members, “As a writer community, we can help create a new culture, one in which abuse and discrimination cannot thrive.”
The pledge states: “As union members, mistreatment of one of us is a problem for all of us. For the last four years, there has been an evolving conversation about addressing sexism, racism, discrimination, and bullying in our industry. As showrunners, we believe this behavior should not be tolerated. And while the...

Eugenio Derbez, Eva Longoria, Max Pelayo and Reese Gonzales, Veronica Falcón, Isabella Gomez, Luna Blaise and Kevin Alejandro have been set to star in Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, a feature film adaptation of Benjamin Alire Sáenz’s YA novel. Aitch Alberto wrote the script and will make her directorial debut on the pic, which is being financing and produced by Limelight alongside 3Pas Studios and Big Swing Productions, in association with Boies Schiller Entertainment. The film counts Derbez, Kyra Sedgwick and Lin-Manuel Miranda among its producers.
Aristotle and Dante, originally published in 2014, centers on the friendship between Aristotle “Ari” Mendoza (to be played by Pelayo) and Dante Quintana (Gonzales), two Mexican American boys on the cusp of manhood who form a life-changing bond after a chance meeting at an El Paso pool in the summer of 1987.

This The Walking Dead review contains spoilers.
The Walking Dead Season 11 Episode 5
One of the appeals of the post-apocalyptic world of The Walking Dead is that there’s no real government except that which is chosen by the people locally. There aren’t people a thousand miles away telling you how to live your life, what you can and cannot do. That’s why you can have democracies like Alexandria existing right next door to death cults like The Whisperers, oligarchies like The Saviors right next to survival of the fittest bands like The Wolves, and why a return to the civilization offered by the Commonwealth isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Sure, on the surface it’s great. There’s ice cream, children playing in the streets, and everyone is given a job based on their pre-fall life. Then you realize it takes five weeks for...

The American Film Institute (AFI), in partnership with Anthony and Joe Russo’s studio Agbo, has named Christina Kelly Holmes as this year’s recipient of the Agbo/AFI Conservatory Development Grant.
Now in its third year, the program awards $25K to a recent AFI Conservatory graduate to develop at least one project with a year-long mentorship from Agbo.
Holmes received the grant for her project For Women Only, a one-hour drama set in 1980s communist Romania about a blacklisted classically trained pianist who becomes a black-market entrepreneur smuggling goods for women into one of the most oppressive regimes in modern history.
“At Agbo we are keenly aware of how important mentorship is for young artists, which is why we are excited to award Christina Kelly Holmes the Agbo/AFI conservatory Development Grant this year,” said Angela Russo Ostot, President of Creative, Agbo. “We’re eager to champion Christina’s...

TV writers are rallying behind their writers room assistants’ calls for a “living wage” as part of the IATSE’s negotiations for a new film and television contract, which resume July 6.
Under the Ia’s contract, the minimum pay for writers’ assistants is only $16 an hour, while script coordinators, who report directly to their showrunners or head writers, are paid as little as $17.64 an hour. Many work for these barely livable wages in the hope of getting a shot at a writing assignment.
Writers have been tweeting their support for their assistants using the hashtags #IASolidarity, #PayUpHollywood and #IALivingWage.
“Writer’s Assistants & Script Coordinators are under-sung and underpaid superstars of every TV production; they deserve to be paid a living wage by every studio, no exceptions,” tweeted Craig Thomas, co-creator/executive producer of How I Met Your Mother and executive producer of the upcoming How I Met Your Father.
