One of the most iconic science fiction action franchises is "Predator," which began with the eponymous movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1987. While "Predator" is regarded as an action classic, attempts to follow-up on its success have since had considerably more mixed results. The series has seen a number of sequels, revivals, and crossovers with the "Alien" franchise, with varying levels of critical and commercial reception. However, for every "Predator" movie that has seen the light of day, there are plenty of projects that were canceled or altered significantly.
From failed attempts to bring Schwarzenegger back in the fold to star in additional installments or sequel plans shelved by disappointing box office, there are lots of discarded "Predator" movies. This includes the studio shuffling pitches and filmmakers in their hopes to keep the franchise relevant and recapture the 1987 movie's magic. The scrapped “Coyote Vs. Acme” has now garnered a filmmakers vs. Warner Bros. campaign on social media.
On private Facebook group Crew Stories, “Coyote Vs. Acme” crew member Nate Bannister posted (and gave IndieWire permission to quote) his frustration. “I was Key Alm [assistant location manager] on this movie, almost died of stress pulling all the permits, we closed down the entirety of downtown Albuquerque, I had to call in every favor of my career to close an overpass with a half a days notice, I got so many angry calls from neighbors, business owners, etc day and night, working on this movie almost tore apart my relationship with my fiancée,” he wrote. “Why do I work in this industry?”
The live-action and animated hybrid film starring John Cena was officially axed by Warner Bros. November 9 as a tax write-off for its Q3 earnings, even though the film had been finished. The $70 million...

Close-Up is a column that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Guillermo Del Toro's Hellboy (2004) is showing on Mubi from May 14 - June 13, 2017 in the United Kingdom. It is hard to imagine a more perfect marriage of director and source material than Guillermo Del Toro with Hellboy. Mike Mignola’s graphic novel series about a demon put to work by the Feds could have been tailor-made for the Mexican fantasy auteur. Hellboy’s panels pit brutish monsters against mad visionaries in dank subterranean crypts, drawing on European folklore and making a fetish of clanking machinery, crumbling ruins and otherworldly magic. Mignola’s primary theme is always the past’s unshakeable hold over the present, the dead’s habit of returning to haunt the living. All of the above are the sort of gothic tropes that have recurred again and again in some form or other throughout Del Toro’s filmography too,...

Earlier this week, Hellboy fans were taken by surprise when it was announced that The Descent director Neil Marshall would be getting behind the camera for a reboot of the property, with Stranger Things star David Harbour taking on the titular role. We say it was a surprise because after Guillermo del Toro officially put those Hellboy 3 rumors to bed, we assumed that the character was done with the silver screen. As it turns out, however, that couldn’t be further from the truth and we will indeed be seeing him again.
In light of all the excitement surrounding the new project, which has been tentatively titled Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen and is apparently set to be darker and more gruesome than the previous films, we’ve learnt of something quite interesting. Due to the fact that this new reboot has been given to go ahead, we won...

Some may not know it as he isnt credited but writer Peter Briggs was one of the very first to work on the story for Alien vs. Predator. Paul W.S. Anderson who directed the picture would eventually tackle the final screenplay. Most of those involved in the project most likely hold some small special place in their hearts for the movie. And that seems to be exactly why Briggs took some offense to remarks recently made by Sigourney Weaver who expressed a desire to have her character killed in Alien 3 after learning of plans to shoot Alien vs Predator.

Appearing at London Comic Con last week, Sigourney Weaver spoke about her history with Fox's "Alien" franchise and seemingly suggested that Fox's early plans to make "Alien vs. Predator" back before "Alien 3" in 1993, was what caused Ridley Scott to drop out of the project and what made her decide to kill off the Ellen Ripley character.
Now Peter Briggs, who penned the original "Alien vs. Predator" spec script back in 1991 (but is uncredited on the final 2004 film) has responded to the criticism in a letter to Bloody Disgusting. Briggs penned a draft which was at Fox for over a decade until Paul W.S. Anderson came onto the movie and did his own version, and says that the third "Alien" began filming almost a year before his spec script even arrived at the studio:
"Maybe they were in a panic about 'Alien 3'... I have no idea. And so when...

Sigourney Weaver had another snipe at Alien vs Predator this week and one of the writing talents behind the project isn't best pleased.
Peter Briggs wrote a spec script for the project way back in summer 1991 based on the Dark Horse comics series which came out the previous year. He later sold it to 20th Century Fox.
In a 1,000-plus word response to Weaver's comments, Briggs takes issue with the idea that Weaver wanted her character Ripley killed off in Alien 3 on hearing of the spinoff, which she also claimed discouraged Ridley Scott from returning to the series.
"Once again, I heaved a sigh that she just can't stop scratching this itch," Briggs told Bloody Disgusting.
He added that Weaver's chronology was off, because producer Larry Gordon told him that Alien vs Predator was only under discussion at Fox days before his then-agent Steve Kenis gave him the script...

Earlier this week, Sigourney Weaver dropped some truth bombs when she said that when she learned about Fox's plans to make "Alien vs. Predator," that's when two things happened: Ridley Scott dropped out of directing "Alien 3," and she decided to get killed off. However, Peter Briggs, who wrote the spec script for the project in 1991 (he was not credited on the finished film released in 2004), has responded to Weaver's criticism. In a lengthy statement to Bloody Disgusting, Briggs make it clear that his draft of "Alien vs. Predator" was his first project for 20th Century Fox, and his first professional sale. But he says it was so well received it launched his career (he's a co-writer on "Hellboy") and remained Fox's only draft of the movie until Paul W.S. Anderson came along and actually made his version over a decade later. He breaks down the timelines of how everything...

During an interview with the Radio Times at this month's London Film and Comic Con, Sigourney Weaver -- who has been a vocal critic of the "Alien vs. Predator" spinoffs for quite some time now -- further blasted the films by claiming that it was her choice to have her "Alien" character Ellen Ripley killed off because, quote: "I heard that Fox was gonna do 'Alien vs Predator.' Which really depressed me because I was very proud of the movies.” Now, in an exclusive rant over at Bloody-Disgusting, original "Alien vs. Predator" screenwriter Peter Briggs (whose version of the film was never made) is calling b.s. on those assertions by throwing down a few facts: most pertinently, that his "Alien vs. Predator" screenplay was bought by Fox long after "Alien 3" had started principal photography: "['AvP' producer] Larry Gordon would later tell me 'Alien vs Predator' had only been discussed...

It’s been a while since we last heard anything about Panzer 88, the slowly-developing supernatural horror film being produced by Gary Kurtz (The Empire Strikes Back, Star Wars, American Graffiti). The latest word on the project is that producer Ivor Powell, who was being films like The Duellists, Alien and Blade Runner, has joined the team.
Directed and co-written by Peter Briggs, Panzer 88 tells the story of German tank during WW2. In October 1944, the German Army in Russia is in full retreat. The 5 man crew of the King Tiger tank they nickname “Ilsa”, stumbles across a small Jewish town that has previously been the target of an S.S. purge. Soon, they become the target of a vengeful supernatural entity that will stop at nothing until they’re destroyed.
The script is also written by Aaron Mason and Jim Cowan. Briggs and Priscilla Ross are also onboard as producers.

We got word today that a pretty interesting addition has been made to the "Monsterverse Horror Comics Ate My Brain" panel being held at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, July 22nd: Werewolf screenwriter Michael Tabb.
Werewolf, you may recall, is the new stand-alone film from Universal that was originally slated to be a sequel to its less than warmly received The Wolfman from 2010. Maybe we'll finally get some clarification as to the exact nature of the upcoming film to be directed by Louis Morneau (reboot, redux, sequel, or what) during the panel.
As for his Monsterverse connection, Tabb will be writing a sinister nod to "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" for an upcoming issue of Monsterverse's acclaimed Bela Lugosi's Tales from the Grave horror anthology comic book series.
Prior to the addition of Michael Tabb, here are the Monsterverse panel details:

One flick we've been waiting patiently for to begin production is Panzer 88. While there's still nothing official, we have been assured the wheels are turning, and to prove it, we have some brand new concept art to drool over.
The movie, which has been described as a "visceral, reality-based story with horror overtones", is coming at us from Peter Briggs (Hellboy co-writer and the forthcoming Mortis Rex) and is a supernatural thriller that's basically a character piece set in a German King Tiger tank in Russia during World War II.
It's five guys in a tin can, and something's trying to stop them from making it home. Weta is working on the special effects. Check out the imagery below courtesy of the official Panzer 88 Facebook page.

Panzer 88 is set during the Second World War, as the five-man crew of a German tank try to make their way back home across Russia, all the while fighting a supernatural entity that is determined to stop them. It is written and directed by Peter Briggs (writer of Hellboy) who has been interviewed by horror blog Bloody Disgusting and threw some sensational concept art into the bargain as well.

We've seen a few splashes of concept art for Panzer 88, the film to be directed by Peter Briggs with Gary Kurtz producing and effects by Weta. It's great-looking stuff, showing the intersection of detailed WWII recreation and what appears to be some supernatural element. Now Peter Briggs is allowing more concept art out into the wild, and he's talking about the film in much greater detail. The script, by Aaron Mason and James Cowan, follows a five-man crew of a giant German King Tiger tank named Ilsa. The crew accidentally awakens something old and powerful that looks a hell of a lot like a Balrog in formidable armor. io9 has a huge interview with the director, where he clears up a few points about the project (I'm snipping statements here and there, because the interview is quite packed with comments about the development): ...the backdrop is set against...

Panzer 88 came across my radar several months ago when I read a fantastic interview on Bloody Disgusting with writer/director Peter Briggs (who wrote the script for Hellboy). Briggs is a hardcore genre enthusiast, and somehow managed to get the backing of Gary Kurtz (Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, The Dark Crystal). The film is a low-budget ($20 million) horror flick, with some pretty cool potential. It's in development now, with no cast in place yet, but in addition to getting Kurtz on board, they've also got Weta, the New Zealand based effects house that worked on The Lord of the Rings trilogy and District 9.
The story is a pretty cool one -- it's essentially another tin can movie, with a dash of the supernatural, and a Das Boot-like setting. Here's a description from co-writer Aaron Mason:

Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back producer Gary Kurtz is going back to big effects films with Panzer 88. We first heard about the film very briefly last year, when Hellboy co-writer Peter Briggs was said to be directing "a supernatural horror film set in a German tank during WW2." At the time, Briggs said he'd been having meetings with Kurtz, and the producer is now completely on board, along with the effects gurus at Weta, who will bring the $20m indie to life. The La Times talked to Gary Kurtz about the project, and he said, It's a good, good project, you haven't seen anything like it for a while...It's a visceral, reality-based story with horror overtones, and the idea is to have be like the best of the graphic novels these days. The film is already being called 'Band of Brothers meets Hellboy' (in part because...

The indie horror feature "Panzer 88", from director Peter Briggs, co-writer of the "Hellboy" screenplay, will follow a Ww II five-man German tank crew terrorized by a supernatural creature.
"Panzer 88" will be produced by "Star Wars" executive Gary Kurtz with the Richard Taylor/Peter Jackson production house Weta Workshop on board to supply VFX.
Weta will construct a full-scale German King Tiger tank for the film, with the entire production to shoot in Wellington, New Zealand, where Jackson's Stone Street Studios and Park Road Post are located.
Premise of "Panzer 88" will be similar in tone to director Michael Mann's 1983 horror feature "The Keep", that has yet to see a DVD release.
Based on the best-seller by author F. P. Wilson, "The Keep", set in Romania, circa 1942, follows a detachment of the German Army sent to guard a mysterious Romanian citadel located on a strategic mountain pass. When...

Weta, the effects folks behind so many big blitzers, will be doing the FX for the upcoming indie supernatural WWII flick Panzer 88 which will be produced by Gary Kurtz and is written by Aaron Mason and James Cowan with some modifications from director Peter Briggs. Kurtz said the film is "a visceral, reality-based story with horror overtones, and the idea is to have be like the best of the graphic novels these days." What's it about?
The plot follows the five-man German crew of the Ilsa -- a King Tiger, the biggest tank of its day -- on a mission to the frigid and fearsome Russian border, where they tread into an ancient mystery by stirring a powerful entity.

Gary Kurtz, producer on the first two Star Wars films, is preparing a winter shoot for Panzer 88, a “spooky wartime adventure” serving as the directorial debut of Hellboy writer Peter Briggs.
The film follows a five-man crew of the Isla, a King Tiger panzer and the biggest tank at the time (also a nod to Hellboy), as it treks towards the Russian border during WWII. But the Nazi team encounters a powerful, paranormal force. In an interview with the La Times, Kurtz said, “You haven’t seen anything like it for a while.” Certainly not, especially a depiction of Nazi soldiers as heroes. However, Briggs insists there will be a clear distinction between Germans and Nazis, specifically an evil S.S. soldier the crew picks up along the way.
The $20 million production will focus on creating claustrophobic tension, like that of submarine story Das Boot, with the help of...

The L.A. Times Blog is reporting that Gary Kurtz (Star Wars producer) is preparing a new independent WWII horror film called Panzer 88.

Peter Briggs' independent WWII horror film, Panzer 88 -- which revolves around a five-man German tank crew that encounters a supernatural beastie as they drive across Russia -- has been generating buzz since it first came to light earlier this year. Gary Kurtz, a producer on the first two beloved Star Wars movies is overseeing, which is a pretty big deal. It's being directed by Briggs, who's best known for co-writing the screenplay for Hellboy. Now comes the biggest news of all -- Richard Taylor and Peter Jackson's Weta Workshop have signed on to handle the film's physical production.
Although this story broke within a Geoff Boucher L.A. Times article covering Kurtz' attendance at the major Star Wars convention in Orlando two weeks ago, I'd received a heads-up email from the director with details of Weta Workshop's involvement ahead of time, and kept it quiet until everything was officially in place.

"Star Wars" producer Gary Kurtz has teamed with Weta FX house to develop a $20 million "Panzer 88" sci-fi film that will be directed by Peter Briggs, whose only credit is writing "Hellboy." The plot follows the five-man German crew of the Ilsa -- a King Tiger, the biggest tank of its day -- on a mission to the frigid and fearsome Russian border, where they tread into an ancient mystery by stirring a powerful entity. The film will have a "Band of Brothers" sort of ensemble. "I'd already written a paranormal World War II sequence in the opening of 'Hellboy,'" said Briggs. "Tonally, 'Panzer 88' is a tad different from that. Our military aspects are more realistic, and mostly akin to the claustrophobic action and tension of 'Das Boot.' We're aiming to do for the tank genre what 'Hunt For Red October' and 'Crimson Tide' did for submarine flicks.

There's a whopper of a District 9-sized story making the rounds in Los Angeles these last few weeks since the madness of the annual San Diego Comic-Con. Namely, that Peter Jackson's famed Wellington based visual effects company, who garnered numerous Oscars for the Lord of The Rings trilogy; Avatar; Kong, and most recently Neil Blomkamp's D-9 amongst others, is about to come onboard the Peter Briggs directed supernatural indie flick, Panzer 88. The much-sought-after WW2 horror piece, about a German tank crew on the run from a malevolent supernatural entity in the snowy Russian wastes, turned heads with the announcement in the trades of legendary Star Wars producer Gary Kurtz' attachment back in February. We at B-d had been following news on the project at the time and ran a piece on it; since then, several intriguing stories have come to light. More...

Peter Briggs is up to his ears in supernatural ooze. He’s currently working on Mortis Rex, which tells the story of a disgraced Roman war hero who comes face to face with an otherworldly beast. Last week we learned that the Hellboy co-writer is gearing up for Panzer 88, a character-driven, supernatural thriller–this one set inside a German King Tiger fleeing Russia during World War II. The soldiers also happen to be fleeing a centuries-old, malevolent creature that has other plans for them. I recently had the opportunity to talk with Briggs, who divulged further details on Panzer 88’s story and [...]

Panzer 88: it’s not just for rivetheads anymore. It’s actually a movie that Hellboy co-writer and Mortis Rex helmer Peter Briggs is directing that is being described as a supernatural thriller set in World War II. I’m a little obsesso when it comes to WWII related anything, so this definitely has my attention. In an interview with Bloody-Disgusting, Briggs described the story behind his new film: “Panzer is another supernatural thriller: basically a character piece set in a German King Tiger tank in Russia in World War 2. It’s five guys in a tin can, and something’s trying to stop them [...]

Historical settings are severely underused in films today. Once upon a time in a cheesier Hollywood, you could find pulpy adventures set among knights, Vikings, or cowboys. They were horribly inaccurate, but I admire and appreciate their desire to just run with another time or place. Nowadays, historical films are considered too expensive. No one makes a movie set in Rome or medieval England just for fun. But I think we're starting to see a shift towards that mentality (after all, how much more expensive are Roman breastplates over CG?) with films like Centurion, Ironclad, Season of the Witch and now a little project called Mortis Rex.
Variety has the scoop on this intriguing movie-to-be, which will be the directorial debut of Hellboy writer Peter Briggs. Mortis Rex is set in 122 A.D. (or C.E. if we want to be proper), and centers on a disgraced Roman war hero.

When a good writer decides to step up to the director's chair, I almost always get both nervous and excited. We usually know that they can meticulously craft a story on paper, but do they have the keen visual eye and management skills to bring together hundreds of people and bring those pages to life? Hellboy screenwriter Peter Briggs will take on this task as Variety reports he will be directing Mortis Rex, a story set in 122 Ad that "centers on a disgraced Roman war hero who is given a last opportunity to redeem his reputation when sent to a Roman garrison beset by a spate of brutal and unexplained killings." Swords and sandals come back into fashion as rival studios, banking on the success -- and inexpensive greenscreen techniques -- of 300, begin casting tales of ancient Greece. Relativity Media is negotiating with Henry Cavill to star as Theseus in War of the Gods a mythic story in which kings and warriors fight alongside gods. Meanwhile, Sam Worthington is being considered to play the role of Perseus in the Warner Bros. remake of the 1981 Clash of the Titans.
And they are not the only ones in on the game. UK-based Intandem Films is getting ready to produce supernatural action thriller Mortis Rex, which pits a disgraced Roman war hero against a supernatural beast causing horrendous deaths. One of the films getting the most attention at Afm this year is undoubtedly Mortis Rex, a giant monster film set in Ancient Rome. The film will be written and directed by Hellboy co-writer Peter Briggs and go into development sometime in 2009. I guess "Mortis Rex" is Latin for "king of death." Here's the film's official logline:
"Mortis Rex" is an Ancient Rome monster movie. In 123 Ad, a disgraced Roman war hero is sent to defend a Roman garrison stationed in remote Scotland from a spate of mysterious killings. The hero reclaims his rightful warrior status by uniting with the local Druids and vanquishing a terrifying supernatural beast.
