For years, women’s sports was an afterthought for TV, frequently relegated to ESPN2, Fox Sports 2 or ESPNNews, if they were able to secure TV rights at all. It was a self-reinforcing cycle of denial: Women’s sports didn’t rate, so the demand for the rights wasn’t there. But the games rarely got play on the biggest platforms, so the untapped potential could never be met.
But over the last year or so, it seems like a dam has broken, with big new rights deals for soccer and a surge of interest in women’s basketball, with both rightsholders, stakeholders, and marketers seeking a bigger piece of the action.
Perhaps nothing exemplifies the rise of interest in women’s sports than the April 1 women’s college basketball matchup between Iowa – led by Caitlin Clark – and Lsu – led by Angel Reese – a rematch of last year’s championship game,...

No matter who prevails next Sunday at the NCAA’s championship game, 2024’s March Madness will go down in history as a milestone moment for women’s sports. Not just in the college basketball realm — but for female athletes overall.
In a perfect storm, the annual bracket-bonkers frenzy around the NCAA college basketball tournament has conferred a level of respect to the women’s game that is rarely been seen across sports media, but for the quadrennial exception of the Women’s World Cup. Exclusive: Prime Video has greenlit The Money Game, a docuseries tracking the revolutionary impact of “name, image and likeness” (Nil) policies on college sports.
Campfire Studios, Axios Media, and Shaquille O’Neal’s Jersey Legends, a division of Authentic Studios, are producers on the project, which will stream exclusively on Prime. It follows a number of notable sports docuseries and doc features on Prime Video, including Coach Prime, an inside look at Colorado’s football program under Deion Sanders, and Kelce, about Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce. On a broader level, sports has become a cornerstone of the Amazon-owned streaming service, notably NFL Thursday Night Football. That regular viewership for live sports provides opportunities for related shoulder programming.

In an upfront week otherwise marked by smaller-scale events, and a lack of star power on stage, Disney threw everything it had (short of any actors) in an expansive upfront presentation Tuesday afternoon.
And that included dozens of stunt performers dressed as samurai engaging in combat in the aisles. But we’ll get back to that.
In a cavernous hall in Manhattan’s Jacob Javits Convention Center, on an enormous stage that took some talent a full minute to walk across, Disney touted every single one of its brands, from ESPN and ABC to FX and Disney+, to Marvel and Lucasfilm.
And while there may not have been any actors, the company included every star it could secure, from ESPN talent like Joe Buck, Troy Aikman, Peyton Manning, Hannah Storm and (their soon-to-be-colleague) Pat McAfee, to ABC News anchors David Muir, George Stephanopoulos, and Michael Strahan (24 hours after he appeared...

Disney’s annual upfront presentation leaned heavily on the company’s non-scripted programming, opening with nearly an hour of focus on ESPN and its sports offerings. The emphasis on live events, of course, comes as the writers strike continues and is expected to impact the fall TV season.
In fact, around 100 Writers Guild members and other union supporters marched outside the Javits Center on Tuesday to remind Disney they are still looking for a deal with the company and the other studios. Among those seen on the picket line: Zach Cherry and Michael Emerson.
Inside the Javits, sports and news stars from within Disney were out in force, while reality personalities like Kim and Khloe Kardashian, Jesse Palmer and Ryan Seacrest made appearances as well. Even Wabc-tv New York anchors Sade Baderinwa and Bill Ritter got some time onstage.
