Chasing The Dragon is one of the most anticipated Chinese films of the year for the simple reason that it unites two superstars – Donnie Yen and Andy Lau. Yen plays notorious drug dealer ‘Crippled Ho’ (previously played by Ray Lui in To Be Number One) while Lau reprises the role of corrupt police chief Lee Rock (whom he played in Lee Rock 1 and 2 in 1991). Early reviews for the film are very positive and Donnie is earning praise for his acting. The rest of the cast includes Philip Keung, Philip Ng and Kent Cheng. Thanks to Magnum Films, we have Five double passes for the film to give away to our readers. For a chance to win, all...

(And I fully expect the gloves to come off on this one...) This week has kind-of put me in a fighting mood, what with the Fantastic Fest Debates last weekend, and both Headshot and Boyka: Undisputed being the subject of some of our best-read articles. Also, a recent rewatch of Once Upon A Time In Shanghai (featured in the screenshot above) made me realize that I'd happily watch Philip Ng and Andy On doing "parcours" and beating the crap out of each other for twenty hours, with story only being an optional thing. Discussing the current crop of great on-screen fighters with actual martial artists got me surprisingly mixed and heated results. What one calls athleticism and skill is derided as empty show-boating by someone...

“Revenge: A Love Story” director Wong Ching-po’s period set movie “Once Upon a Time in China” was previously announced as starring Chow-Yun Fat, though the impression I got at the time was that it would be a historical drama. Or, historical-ish, anyway, with the infamous Wong Jing producing. Turns out, it might still be a drama, but one that’s heavily flavored with ass-kicking kung fu. The film has now produced a teaser trailer starring Philip Ng pulling his best Donnie Yen impression, and doing a pretty damn fine job of it, too. It also looks as if Ng will be the star, which makes me wonder if Chow Yun Fat is even still in the cast, though I haven’t really heard anything about him leaving. The film is still scheduled to co-star Sammo Hung, though. It could be that Fat shows up briefly, or in a cameo.

Whenever the topic of who the next young action star will be to emerge in Hong Kong and China the conversation inevitably begins with the hugely talented Wu Jing but between the fact that at 38 (!) he’s no longer particularly young and the simple reality that you need someone for him to fight against it doesn’t take long before a few more names get thrown on the table. And amongst those in the know one of those names is generally Philip Ng. Ng is considered to be one of the great undiscovereds right now, though that will be changing soon with a number of Hong Kong and international productions on his slate and our thanks go to Mike Leeder for pointing the way to Somebody To Love a new independent short with Ng in the lead.
Directed by Seamus Walsh this is a truly international, independent bit of work.
