Chris Pratt has teased that a "Nintendo cinematic universe" could be in the pipeline. The 44-year-old actor will once again play Mario in the recently-announced sequel to 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' and thinks there is "so much to explore" in terms of stories based on the characters created by the Japanese video game company.Speaking to Screen Rant, Chris said: "Oh, man! There's so much to explore. There are decades worth of (games) to explore, not only with Mario and Peach and Donkey Kong and Luigi and Bowser and Yoshi; that was teased at the end. "But it just gets me so excited. I was such a Nintendo head growing up, so just thinking about how everything from 'Legend of Zelda' to the entire Nintendo cinematic universe could be created and what that could look like for all of these characters that I love?"I mean, there's really no limit.

When it comes to making your voice heard by those in charge and demanding change in the world, songs are a powerful tool to express these opinions. Many famous artists have made their names and music infinite as they have used their talent to present a viewpoint which is perhaps most eloquently voiced in music. Especially if these opinions and narratives are part of a cultural minority within a country, these songs ring true in the ears of those sharing those experiences, and also hold some truth to the generations that come after. When it comes to the Civil Rights Movement, there are many examples, but the voice of Nobuko Miyamoto is one that has expressed the struggles of many Asian Americans faced with racism, injustice and other issues.

While promoting the new Garfield animated pic, Chris Pratt briefly touched on his past performance as the princess-saving Brooklyn plumber, Mario.
Despite receiving negative reviews from critics, the 2023 animated Super Mario Bros. Movie was an unexpected blockbuster, as it went on to set the record for biggest global opening for an animated movie.
After everything was said and done, the movie made $1.362 billion globally on a meager $100 million production budget. That feat made The Super Mario Bros. Movie the most financially successful film of 2023, according to Deadline Hollywood.
A sequel was officially announced on March 10, 2024, as part of Mario Day celebrations and given an April 3, 2026 release date.
Speaking to Total Film, Pratt teased, "I can't tell you much but I can say that there is another Mario movie coming. It gets me very excited thinking about the world of Mario and Nintendo in general, I think over the next decade...

The success of Bruce Lee's films on the international scene saw several attempts over the years by Golden Harvest to try and recapture the lightning in a bottle. Some saw efforts to launch a new star, others like “A Queen's Ransom” featuring recognizable “talent” from the west. George Lazenby whilst not a big star at the time was still a “name” having appeared as 007 in “On Her Majesty's Secret Service”. So, it feels somehow apt that he was cast as the terrorist out to kill her here. Backed up by Jimmy Wang Yu and Angela Mao it should on the surface have been a bigger deal. With Eureka Entertainment releasing it on Blu Ray we can discover for ourselves whether it deserves to be.

Universal and Illumination’s smash The Super Mario Bros Movie finishes No. 1 to make it a wrap on Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament for 2023. While the industry is still coming out of Covid and the aftermath of the strikes, there’s no question about the major motion picture studios’ embrace of the theatrical downstream model; steamers such as Amazon and Apple realize the power of it too.
Last year’s wild ride saw the buckling of superhero movies, though Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse underscored fanboys’ hunger for something different in the genre. The year also showed that longtime box office emperor Disney can lose its clothes sometimes — in 2023 it was its overextension and hasty execution of IP Wish, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Haunted Mansion and The Marvels. Barbie and Oppenheimer, meanwhile, showed that perhaps the biggest box office weekends are best programmed with two tentpoles in the heart of summer.

Amongst the many up-and-rising TV series, Fallout’s recent release has found itself in a comfortable position owing to the name’s long built-up legacy. Borrowing source material from a video game franchise directed by none other than Todd Howard, fans have been tuning in to watch the series based on their favorite games adapted into another form.

However, as anyone would be, the studio was potentially unsure of whether to go ahead with the project or not, and Jonathan Nolan’s ambition on how to construct the series’s universe might have been the last straw Howard was waiting for to take the leap of faith.

The word "iconic" gets used a lot, but if there's one character who deserves to be called that, it's Mario. The little mustachioed guy revolutionized gaming (and plumbing) forever. He has defended kingdoms against countless threats, saved princesses, and even fought off gorillas. He hasn't done all that much actual plumbing, but he has been a racer, a doctor, a golfer, a superhero, and even an elephant.
After the huge, incredible, and not entirely surprising box office success of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" — not the Bob Hoskins one, the Chris Pratt one — it was inevitable that we would get more of the Mario brothers. After all, if Mario can have almost as many careers as Barbie, why not add "movie star" to the list?

Co-directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic will return for the sequel, and Meledandri said on Sunday that they and their team of animators are already “busy at work storyboarding scenes and developing set designs for new environments.”

Illumination and Nintendo will join forces to produce a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros.
The companies previously partnered on last year’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which grossed more than $1.3 billion and became the second highest-grossing movie of 2023. It’s unclear which fanciful characters the new film will focus on — be they plumbers, princesses, Koopas or other residents of the Mushroom Kingdom — and the partners are not using the word “sequel.” However, the companies did specify that the movie will be released in theaters on April 3, 2026, in the U.S. and additional markets globally. It will be unveiled in other territories throughout April.

The story penned by Eiichiro Oda is one of the most incredible anime stories ever, and it won’t be overtaken anytime soon. In the journey of uncovering the One Piece, Oda sensei has introduced us to numerous characters, each of whom has managed to bond with the audience.
Roronoa Zoro’s Coldest Moment
One of the most beloved characters is Zoro, whom fans acknowledge for his loyalty to Luffy and his fighting style, which involves using three swords. However, despite Oda sensei being hailed as a mastermind, he sometimes does things on a whim. One example of this could be Zoro’s swords, as it has been revealed that Zoro only uses three swords because of Oda sensei’s urge to make him look greater than Miyamoto Musashi, the greatest swordsman in Japanese history.

The landscape of the Tokyo underworld was massively affected by Tozawa’s presence, whose dastardly acts created unrest among Yakuza and changed the existing dynamic with the cops. In his absence, situations took a significant turn yet again as a false sense of security momentarily grasped everyone. However, the third episode of HBO Max’s Tokyo Vice hints that Tozawa has possibly returned sooner than expected, which will put several lives in mortal danger, starting with our protagonist duo, Jake and Katagiri.
While the first episode of the second season of Tokyo Vice revealed Polina’s death to be connected with the vice minister’s high-profile scandal, the deliberate destruction of evidence in Meicho by unknown perps resulted in the case being dropped. Tozawa had left the country previously, and Katagiri learns that he might have moved to the States for reasons unknown. On the other hand, upon learning that...

Waging war against organized crime is one of the steepest hills to climb for those who pursue truth and justice, and it is twice as treacherous if a diabolical, influential organization like the Yakuza is posited as the opponent. As the second season of Max’s Tokyo Vice returns with two new episodes, the rookie investigative journalist Jake Adelstein learns a harsh lesson about that, and the veteran detective, Katagiri, too gets a reminder, as he had presumably forgotten about the danger that his trade entails.
In the previous season, as a newcomer and the first foreign journalist at Japan’s most prestigious newspaper, Meicho Shimbun, Jake Adelstein quickly found himself entangled in the ongoing conflict between two rival Yakuza clans of Tokyo—Tozawa and Chihara-Kai—and was also taken under the wing of Detective Katagiri. Since antiquity, the Land of the Rising Sun has maintained an enigmatic presence through its complex socio-cultural distinctiveness, cloistered existence, and artistic accomplishments. After undergoing an economic boom resulting from financial reforms during the 1950s and 1970s, the nation posited itself as the pioneering example of advancement achieved through the perfect union of modernity and tradition. But underneath the resplendent veil of development, glitz, and orderliness, behind the illuminated commercial districts of Japan, lies a hideous, savage, and downright barbaric world of organized crime emboldened by regressive traditions, apathy, and fear. Having had their roots deep inside the nation for centuries, the Yakuza have gotten themselves seemingly legitimized by the authorities as they carry out dastardly, dehumanizing acts completely unchecked.

As soon as news hit in November that Nintendo and Sony Pictures were joining forces for a live-action movie based on the The Legend of Zelda video games, many fans started to predict the the studios had the next “Lord of the Rings” on their hands. Not so fast. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the film’s director Wes Ball said he’s long envisioned a Zelda movie not as a “Rings”-like epic but as a live-action Hayao Miyazaki movie.
Ball said his vision for the live-action Zelda movie is “this awesome fantasy-adventure movie that isn’t like ‘Lord of the Rings,’ it’s its own thing. I’ve always said, I would love to see a live-action Miyazaki. That wonder and whimsy that he brings to things, I would love to see something like that.”
“It’s going to be awesome,” Ball continued. “My whole life has led up to this moment.

Since the official word broke that Nintendo is pursuing a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, my head has been spinning with possibilities of what the film will look like. Hyrule is undoubtedly one of the most lush, intricate, and enigmatic kingdoms under Nintendo’s imaginative umbrella. When Maze Runner director Wes Ball approaches Link and Zelda’s world, he must pull out all the stops. Thankfully, it sounds like Ball is off to a great start. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Ball said he wants The Legend of Zelda to feel like a live-action Miyazaki film, which is music to my ears. Hayao Miyazaki is the legend who co-founded Studio Ghibli and is often called the “Godfather of Anime.” Imagine Link, Zelda, and Ganon inhabiting a world as fantasy-driven as Miyazaki’s My Neighbor Totoro or Howl’s Moving Castle. The possibilities are endless.

Hand over your crowns, Batman and Iron Man, it's Mario and Freddy Fazbear's time to reign dominant over the box office. Yes, it seems video game adaptations might be the next big thing in Hollywood, now that the generation of kids who were raised on gaming consoles and point-and-click titles are old enough to purchase movie tickets for themselves. And with "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" allowing Nintendo to successfully expand into the film business, what better time for the paterfamilias of high-fantasy video game series, "The Legend of Zelda," to finally make its way to the big screen in live-action?

It was announced this week that director Wes Ball will be helming a live-action feature film based on the Nintendo video game franchise "The Legend of Zelda." The original 1986 "Legend of Zelda" game took place in a fantasy kingdom called Hyrule, which had become overrun by monsters after the evil pig-like overlord Ganon kidnapped Princess Zelda. Players controlled an elf-like hero named Link as he traversed dungeons, collecting a growing array of weapons and seeking pieces of the Triforce, a triangular widget of ineffable power. It was Nintendo's riff on the high fantasy genre, taking cues from "Dungeons & Dragons" and J.R.R. Tolkien.
In the 37 years since the game's release, it has become a massive property unto itself, spawning 19 sequels and a 1989 animated segment that ran as part of "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show." It would have seemed logical to have made a "Legend of Zelda" feature film by now,...

Watch out, Mario, because Link's right behind you! "The Legend of Zelda," arguably Nintendo's second most-famous franchise, is getting its own movie adaptation -- but this time, it'll be in live-action. According to Nintendo, director Wes Ball is set to direct the film, which will be produced by video game creator Shigeru Miyamoto ("The Super Mario Bros. Movie") and Avi Arad ("Spider-Man"). Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment will co-produce the film, with Nintendo providing more than half of the financing, and Sony will handle theatrical distribution around the globe. This isn't the first time someone's tried to make a live-action version of the world of Hyrule, but hopefully Sony Pictures has better luck than Netflix did with their ill-fated attempt at an adaptation a few years back.
Plans for a "Legend of Zelda" movie are still in the nascent stages, of course, but it's also pretty exciting, because...

The Legend of Zelda is heading to the big screen. After Universal’s $1 billion hit adaptation Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo is developing the new Zelda project with Sony Pictures Entertainment.
Wes Ball, the director behind the Maze Runner trilogy, will helm the live-action feature, with Sony distributing. Nintendo and Avi Arad’s Arad Productions, Inc. are behind the film that will be co-financed by the gaming giant and Sony.
Nintendo representative director and fellow Shigeru Miyamoto, who is set to produce the movie, posted Tuesday to X (formerly Twitter) that he and Arad have been working on a live-action version “for many years now.”

This month sees the launch of Super Mario Bros. Wonder: the first new Super Mario game on the Nintendo Switch since 2017’s Super Mario Odyssey and the first side-scrolling Super Mario game since 2012’s New Super Mario Bros. U on the Wii U.
While there’s plenty of buzz about Wonder being the first Super Mario game to feature a different voice actor for Mario (instead of franchise veteran Charles Martinet) in over 25 years, the game also marks the return of prolific Nintendo developer Takashi Tezuka, who serves as Super Mario Bros. Wonder’s producer.
A presence with the Super Mario series since the beginning, Tezuka is the unsung figure behind making the video game hero a global icon and figurehead of the entire video game industry.

Takashi Yamazaki’s first feature, “Juvenile,” while nothing groundbreaking, was a charming directorial debut that teased the potential of the director’s talents moving forward. Sadly, the same cannot be said for his second movie, “Returner,” a visually ugly mess that fails to entertain with its action or engage with its sci-fi storytelling. Much of the production team returns, including visual effects companies Shirogumi and Robot Communications, as do some actors, notably Anne Suzuki, in a more prominent starring role. Starring alongside her is Takeshi Kaneshiro, who cinephiles may best recognize for his collaborations with acclaimed filmmaker Wong Kar-wai. While “Returner” would be a box-office hit, it was met with generally negative reception.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has gotten its Peacock premiere date following a hugely successful run in theaters, the streamer announced on Thursday. The film from Universal and Illumination begins streaming exclusively on the platform on August 3rd, and will be joined there by behind-the-scenes cast interviews, as well as an immersive “Field Guide” expanding the film through bonus features, and a lyric video for a song sung by Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy).

Michihito Fujii has emerged during the recent years as one of the most intriguing voices of Japanese cinema, with movies like “The Journalist”, “Yakuza and the Family” and “Day and Night” setting the tone for an impressive career. In the last few years, he seems to have been employed by Netflix in some way, since a number of his latest works premiere on the streaming platform. Not holding “Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 – Sustainable War” against him, since everyone who has dealt with that mess has left severely “scarred”, it was really interesting to see what his latest work, “Village” would be like, particularly since it seemed to incorporate a number of the genre elements he implemented excellently in his previous works.

Although Netflix is still working its way around the Asian movies in its catalog, in terms of series the quality is quite high, with a quality in terms of production values of many of them being comparable, if not better with feature films. “Sanctuary”, which takes a look at the world of sumo, is definitely one of those films.

Even the most casual gamers have at least some familiarity with The Legend of Zelda games. The series was an instant hit from the moment it launched on the Famicom Disk System in 1986, and since then it’s only become more popular thanks to new entries that consistently reinvent the franchise (and even video games as a whole).
With such a lengthy history and more than a dozen mainline entries, there’s no shortage of obscure Zelda trivia out there. But while you might know about the complicated timeline or the terrible CD-i games, these are 15 facts that even the most diehard fans probably never knew about The Legend of Zelda as we look forward to the upcoming release of Tears of the Kingdom.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a massive box office hit despite the movie’s generally low critic review scores. Indeed, most people who have seen the movie tend to have both an opinion about the movie itself and those critics who gave it mixed-to-negative reviews. That crowd now includes Super Mario Bros. creator, Shigeru Miyamoto.
In an interview with Japanese media representatives (as translated by Video Games Chronicles), Miyamoto addressed pretty much every aspect of the Super Mario Bros. movie. Naturally, the subject of the movie’s somewhat poor critical reception (at least in the West) came up. Unphased, Miyamoto was surprisingly direct regarding those reviews and how they may have contributed to the movie’s success.

While streamers typically get by on thrifty marketing budgets, pushing content largely on their menus, most motion picture studios, like Universal, still have all the superpowers in the world to blast a movie out of a canon.
But here’s something to keep in mind as we detail Universal’s promo playbook below in propelling Illumination/Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros Movie to several opening records.: IP and marketing machine alone don’t propel a movie to great box office heights.
‘The Super Mario Bros Movie’
The movie also needs to be great. As subjective and simple-minded as that sounds, when it comes to the feature take of the ever-popular video game Super Mario Bros, it meant staying faithful to the source material itself: The game. And that’s exactly what Illumination and filmmakers Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic did in this second big screen go-round of the Nintendo game.

It’s been over forty years since Mario made his video game debut as the hero of 1981’s arcade classic Donkey Kong, although back then he was simply known as “Jumpman.” He’s had quite the glow up since then, appearing in over 200 video games, a Saturday morning cartoon, and now two theatrically released movies. And the success of Donkey Kong didn’t give the world just one star, it also delivered another: creator Shigeru Miyamoto.

Last year on September 23, four words took over the entire internet: "Chris Pratt is Mario." In a Nintendo Direct presentation, franchise creator Shigeru Miyamoto himself announced the company's second attempt in bringing his beloved red plumber mascot to the big screen since the financial failure of 1993's live-action "Super Mario Bros." (which has taken on a cult following in recent years). Collaborating with Universal's animation studio, Illumination Entertainment, Miyamoto took on a creative producer role for the project — this time, he was determined to get everything about his video game world right, and that required the freedom animation provides.

It's always been unclear as to how Donkey Kong fits into the world of Mario. Technically, the two characters made their debut together in the same game and they've made numerous crossover appearances since then, but they also seem to exist in independent corners of their separate franchises. "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," however, introduces Donkey Kong as a piece of the greater Mario universe, tidying up a confusing piece of Mario lore for the creator of both video game icons, Shigeru Miyamoto.
The "Donkey Kong" arcade game, released in 1981, pitted Mario against the antagonistic Dk, though the former didn't have a full identity yet and was called "Jumpman." Both moved on to become the main heroes of their own respective series as Miyamoto directly oversaw development of the Mario games and British studio Rare handled the "Donkey Kong Country" series. Neither character appeared in each other's flagship titles, but...

The Super Mario franchise is a cornerstone of the video game industry. Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach…we know these names better than we know the names of our own parents (whoever they may claim to be). Yet, for as much as we know about the Super Mario franchise, there is so much we don’t know about it. Much of the series is still shrouded in mystery.
So if you’ve ever wondered what’s in the darkest corners of the Super Mario franchise, here are some of the most notable Super Mario urban legends and unsolved mysteries.
15. The True Origins of Donkey Kong’s Name
The Donkey Kong arcade game may have given Mario his big break, but Donkey Kong has obviously gone on to become a household name himself. That’s what makes it so strange that the true origins of Donkey Kong’s name remain something of a mystery.

Last month, Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel went to the theater to see “Super Mario Bros.,” a movie they directed 30 years ago — and haven’t watched since.
The live-action 1993 film, starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as Mario and Luigi, bombed at the box office and landed on various “Worst Movies of All Time” lists, later developing a passionate cult following. In the directors’ own words, “Super Mario Bros.” was so “reviled” that it left a “black mark” on the married couple’s careers.
That is, until a midnight screening held at Quentin Tarantino’s New Beverly Cinema on March 11 “washed away the stain.”
“My thought was that there would be 10 or 20 people there,” Morton tells Variety. “But it was jam-packed. There were people queueing up around the block for extra tickets.” During the film, Morton says the audience was “laughing and clapping at all the right places. They weren...

On the eve of its 30th birthday, Super Mario Bros.––the 1993 film, not the groundbreaking video game––might be due for critical reappraisal. Dubbed “a complete waste of time and money” by Roger Ebert, rejected by Mario’s custodians at Nintendo, and described with utter contempt by its own stars, it has enjoyed three decades of cultural life as a punchline about the dismal standards of game-to-movie adaptations. Yet the tonally confused kids’ movie, viewed in retrospect of a fully Marvelized Hollywood, recalls a time when genuinely weird, mutant art could sometimes break out of the franchise-blockbuster laboratories. Directed by Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel, the spousal duo behind cult cyberpunk sensation Max Headroom, it liberally reimagines the vaguely defined Mario lore of plumbers, princesses, mushrooms, and dinosaurs into a gothic urban fever dream. Pursuing a kidnapped girl, the titular brothers––Bob Hoskins as Mario, adopting a wheezing, gesticulating meatball...

When Rocky Morton's and Annabel Jankel's 1993 film "Super Mario Bros." first hit theaters in May of 1993, it was immediately greeted with skepticism by Nintendo fans. The live-action adventure took characters and some of the more notable iconography from Shigeru Miyamoto's popular video game series and repurposed them into a bizarre, dystopian tale about a parallel universe, the evolutionary fate of dinosaurs, and fascism. The whimsical, cartoonish fairy tale elements of the 1985 game were absent, replaced by something steely, dank, and coated in athlete's foot-style fungus. Fans were concerned that the movie wasn't a faithful adaptation of the game, and it was rejected on this basis for many, many years.
Reviews weren't kind either. The film currently holds a mere 28% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Gene Siskel called it one of the worst movies of 1993. It didn't help that "Super Mario Bros." was also a notoriously troubled production...

With the arrival of The Super Mario Bros. Movie this week, there will undoubtedly be the odor of the 1993 Mario Bros. stinker billowing from the pipes. But that will only be for a certain generation who can’t get the image of dancing goombas out of their heads, as key people behind the latest movie barely discussed it during production.
In a joint interview with Variety, Shigeru Miyamoto, designer of Nes’s Super Mario Bros., and Illumination founder Chris Meledandri, touched on the 1993 original Mario movie, although were apparently hesitant to even mention it by name. Miyamoto, however, feels like he knows why it was such a critical and commercial failure, citing his lack of involvement. “We were fearful of all the failure of past IP adaptations, where there’s a license and a distance between the original creators and the creators of the films…The fans get outraged...

The upcoming Super Mario Bros. movie is expected to be a massive box office hit. While the film’s presumed success can certainly be attributed to the popularity of the Super Mario franchise itself, others are saying that its incredibly family-friendly nature will be its greatest box office asset. Of course, the Super Mario games themselves are also extremely family-friendly, and Super Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto has long been a famously vocal critic of violent video games. However, it seems that he may finally be softening his stance on that subject.
In an interview with Variety about the upcoming Super Mario Bros. movie, Miyamoto was once again asked about his long-held, intense stance against violence in video games. Surprisingly, Miyamoto offered a much more subdued answer this time around.

As Nintendo takes its shot at the box office with “The Super Mario Bros. But while Shigeru Miyamoto — the legendary video game designer, Nintendo fellow and self-proclaimed “Mario’s mom” — won’t say where Mario is running next, he is forthright about where he won’t be: your smartphone.
Sitting down with Variety for this week’s cover story on the making of the film, Miyamoto said firmly, “Mobile apps will not be the primary path of future Mario games.”

The most famous video game designer in the world is sitting meditatively in a drab studio in Burbank. The austerity of the room is in stark juxtaposition with all the colorful characters he’s dreamed up over a lifetime, from mushroom-gobbling plumbers to mystical warriors to barrel-hurling gorillas. He’s the brains behind two of the biggest video game franchises of all time: Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda. In fact, this visionary’s influence is so vast, he’s been compared to Walt Disney or Steve Jobs.
