Tom Holland takes on the role of an addict forced to rob banks to pay off his debt in trailer for “Cherry,” which dropped Thursday.
The film is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, who are from Cleveland, Ohio — the same place where Holland’s character is from. With a serious theme of drug addiction at the center of the crime drama, the Russos hope to shine a light on the impact of the opioid crisis.
“It’s a very emotionally important movie for us. That part of the country has been designated ground zero for the opioid crisis,” Joe Russo said in a Q&a with Inverse. “We’ve had a lot of people we were very close to die because of the crisis. We felt that it was a story that needed to be told and the luxury of coming off of movies like ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame...

This is timely — Wind Dancer, the company of Home Improvement co-creators Matt Williams and David McFadzean, has put in development a TV series, in which an anonymous Good Samaritan leaves cash for strangers throughout Los Angeles. The project is not inspired by the current Hidden Cash frenzy, in which an anonymous millionaire hides money-filled envelopes in La, posting clues about their location on Twitter to amass 355,000 followers since launching the social experiment in San Francisco about a week ago. Instead, Wind Dancer is adapting Good Sam, the debut novel of the company’s president Dete Meserve, which is being published next Tuesday, June 3. In it, a female TV news reporter in Los Angeles is looking for the Good Samaritan (aka Good Sam) who is anonymously leaving $100,000 cash on strangers’ front porches throughout the city (trailer below). Williams and McFadzean executive produce with Meserve and Wind Dancer head of production Judd Payne.

Royal Pains star Mark Feuerstein has teamed with longtime pals Adam Stein and Sam Friedlander to co-create hourlong drama Flipside, which tracks three best friends as they live out two distinct alternate paths after graduating from college – one that sees them staying in their Minnesota hometown and another in which they chase their dreams in New York City. Feuerstein, Friedlander, and Stein previously collaborated on comedy short Lazy Monday, a response video to SNL‘s Lazy Sunday digital sketch. The trio will take Flipside out to networks next week before Feuerstein returns to Royal Pains to film the upcoming sixth season. As part of their pitch for Flipside, Stein and Friedlander shot a proof of concept teaser starring Ben Goldsmith, Meg Cionni, and Blake Cooper Griffin as the central besties. The co-creators credit the video with garnering them preliminary interest from broadcast and cable nets. Canadian production company Muse Entertainment...

Today the 2013 Spirit Awards were handed out and it was a dominating effort from Silver Linings Playbook as it won Best Picture, Director (David O. Russell), Actress (Jennifer Lawrence) and Screenplay (Russell). The only award it was nominated for and didn't win was Best Actor where Bradley Cooper lost to John Hawkes for The Sessions, but that's only a minor blip on the radar when you win this big. Among the early awards handed out, Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being a Wallflower won for Best First Feature while Derek Connolly won for Best First Screenplay for the romantic sci-fi film Safety Not Guaranteed. Then the Twitterverse exploded with a Best Supporting Actor win for Matthew McConaughey and his work in Magic Mike, which, for a time, seemed like it may be able to eek into that last Supporting slot at the Oscars. No dice, a Spirit Award it will have to be.

Nominations for the 28th Film Independent Spirit Awards were announced today and were led by Moonrise Kingdom and Silver Linings Playbook with five nominations each followed closely by fellow Best Feature nominees Beasts of the Southern Wild and Keep the Lights On as well as Ava DuVernay's Middle of Nowhere, each with four nominations. Winner of the Alfred P. Sloan Prize for his sophomore feature Adam (Sundance ’09), Max Mayer’s As Cool As I Am appears to be a “soft” entry – but then so was Adam. Filming took place in 2011, images were recently revealed during Afm – so this is clearly in the ready mode. Featuring Claire Danes, James Marsden, Sarah Bolger (pic above), Jeremy Sisto, Thomas Mann, Peter Fonda, and Anika Noni Rose, this dramedy is an adaptation of Pete Fromm’s novel.
Gist: Written by Virginia Korus Spragg, this is about a sarcastic and intelligent teenage girl (Bolger) comes of age in a small Montana town with her most absent and very young parents, and deals with the pains of adolescence with her equally wry boyfriend Kenny.

It's been a few months since last we heard anything about Lionsgate's new chiller Dead of Winter, but finally there's something worth talking about. A director is eyeballing the project, and we've got all the details and more!
Variety reports that music video and commercial helmer Anthony Mandler is attached to direct Dead of Winter, a Black List thriller written by Sarah Conradt that has Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) attached to star.
Steinfeld is slated to play a teen who heads to a remote cabin in the mountains with her father and new stepmother -- an experience he hopes will bring the two ladies closer together. When a dangerous fugitive posing as a park ranger shows up, the trio must put aside the family bonding to fight for survival.
Judd Payne, Matt Williams, and David McFadzean will produce for Wind Dancer along with Hopscotch's Sukee Chew and Sherryl Clark's shingle Busted Shark.

There's nothing worse than the feeling of isolation. The notion of being completely cut off from the outside world (though appealing at times) is truly a frightening one, and Lionsgate is getting ready to exploit that with their new feature Dead of Winter.
According to Bloody Disgusting the Gate is getting behind Dead of Winter (formerly Hopscotch), a new thriller from Hopscotch Pictures and Wind Dancer Films.
Hailee Steinfeld (pictured right; True Grit, Romeo and Juliet) is signed on to star as Josephine, a young girl who has recently lost her mother. She joins her family members who are thrown into conflict with each other, nature, and a crazed killer when they are isolated in their mountain home during a snowstorm. Sarah Conradt penned the screenplay.
Sukee Chew, Judd Payne and Sherryl Clark produce with a shoot date forthcoming. The hunt for a director is ongoing. More soon!

The film will kick off the festival on June 16 at Regal Cinemas Stadium 14 at L.A. Live. It is written by Skip Hollandsworth and director Linklater and stars Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine, and Matthew McConaughey.
The film follows a beloved mortician (Black) from a small Texas town, even winning over the town's richest, meanest widow (MacLaine). Even after Bernie commits a horrible crime, people still will not utter a bad word against him.

#33. Bernie Director: Richard LinklaterWriter(s): Skip Hollandsworth and Linklater Producers: Liz Glotzer, Judd Payne, Celine Rattray, Martin Shafer and Ginger SledgeDistributor: Rights Available. The Gist: Based on the true story of Berhardt "Bernie" Tiede, features Jack Black as a mortician who becomes companion to an 81 year old widow, Marjorie Nugent (MacLaine). Tiede was convicted of shooting Nugent in 1996 and hiding her body in a freezer for nine months, pretending as though she was still alive. McConaughey will play the town's district attorney, always angling for re-election and suspicious about the widow's death....(more) Cast: Jack Black, Matthew McConaughey, Shirley MacLaine and Rip Torn List Worthy Reasons...: Jack Black's stock has perhaps plummeted to its lowest point, and I have a feeling that this true crime story exploring the darker side of the human condition is the counter-programming role that might do the trick. Linklater calls it his Fargo.
