It’s barely been two weeks since their critically acclaimed series wrapped its six-season run on FX, but the cast and creators of “The Americans” reunited Sunday at the Atx Festival in Austin, Tex. to deconstruct the “heartbreaking” series finale.
On hand were showrunners Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, executive producer Chris Long and series stars Keri Russell (Elizabeth Jennings), Matthew Rhys (Philip Jennings), Noah Emmerich (Stan Beeman), Holly Taylor (Paige Jennings), Keidrich Sellati (Henry Jennings), and Brandon J. Dirden (Dennis Aderholt).
Russell said she was surprised at first by the finale, which saw the Jennings return to Russia without their children, Paige and Henry. But “it just felt right,” she said. “I wanted this couple to pay in some way, and they paid in the worst possible way. It’s heartbreaking.”
Agreed Weisberg, “That’s a hell of a toll,” who along with Fields recounted that the finale had...

“I was so surprised, which I always am with their storylines,” recalled Russell when asked about her first reaction to the finale script written by Weisberg and Fields. “I thought they pitched it perfect. I really did. Spoiler Alert: The following postmortem contains details about tonight’s series finale of The Americans on FX
Imagine you’re FBI agent Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich), and you just learned that the next door neighbors who’ve been your best friends for the last few years are literally Soviet spies, the types you’ve been hunting all this time during the tail-end years of the Cold War.
Wouldn’t you just lose it?
But, no, Stan kept his cool. And though he had the Jennings spy family of Philip (Matthew Rhys), Elizabeth (Keri Russell) and Paige (Holly Taylor) at gunpoint, sweating under the parking garage lights for the activities they were accountable for, the trio were able to tap dance their way out of being cuffed. And in return for letting them go, you could say they indirectly gave Stan the Ok to have custody of their son Henry Jennings.

It’s no secret that the life of a spy is grueling. To work in the field, one must have a certain tolerance for pain, stress, and the psychological toll of knowing that danger can lurk around any corner. Even though spies have the ability to put their emotions on hold in order to do their jobs, sometimes things just get too personal. At the end of the day, spies are humans as well, humans with families and friends who usually want no part of the world of espionage.
Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean that they don’t face unforeseen physical, mental, and emotional consequences. These seven television spies showed us the side effects that could accompany the job, specifically when their loved ones got caught in the crossfire.

A review of tonight's "The Americans" coming up just as soon as I look into the tip of your nose... "You forget what it's like to have your own life." -Nina The title "One Day in the Life of Anton Baklanov" suggests an episode spent entirely in the Russian lab with Anton, Nina, and the disapproving matron. Instead, that's just one part of a busy hour. Yet the title doesn't feel inaccurate, because for this week, everyone is Anton Baklanov: trapped in situations they didn't ask for, and that there seems no hope of escaping from back to the life they thought they were living. Anton's prison is the most overt, because he was literally taken against his will (even Nina confessed to Arkady, knowing the gulag was a potential result), but Paige, Martha and even Philip and Elizabeth all find themselves living lives not their own, where they have...

A review of tonight's "The Americans" — which FX renewed for a fourth season yesterday — coming up just as soon as I'm trying to turn you into a travel agent... "You're... spies?" -Paige About the only negative thing I can say about "Stingers" is that I wish there had been more of it — or, at least, more of the Paige storyline, and perhaps less of the season's many other plots. Whether that would have meant devoting the whole episode to that conversation and its aftermath, or simply not cutting away to other subplots once her parents spilled the Soviet beans, I think an incredibly powerful episode would have felt even stronger if we weren't cutting away to Stan at the office, or Arkady and Tatiana discussing what's going on with Zinaida (who is confirmed as a double agent early in the episode). Fields and Weisberg (who get script credit for one...

Last winter, the world met Philip and Elizabeth Jennings, a "typical" white-bread married couple living in suburban Washington, D.C., circa 1981. Philip (Matthew Rhys) plays racquetball and runs a local travel agency, while fresh-faced Elizabeth (Keri Russell) sports a wardrobe straight out of Blair Warner's closet and spends her free time baking brownies for the new neighbors. Philip and Elizabeth are so good at masking their true identities that even their American-born children have no clue Mom and Dad are really highly trained Kgb agents spying on their adopted homeland.
