A new episode of The Arrow in the Head Show has just been released, and in this one hosts John “The Arrow” Fallon and Lance Vlcek are looking back at what may be the least popular entry in the Alien franchise – and if that’s the case, it’s an accomplishment that it passed some of the lesser entries on the race to the bottom. The movie in question is 2017’s Alien: Covenant (watch it Here) – and to find out what The Arrow and Lance think of it, check out the video embedded above!
Directed by Ridley Scott from a screenplay by John Logan and Dante Harper (and a story by Jack Paglen and Michael Green), Alien: Covenant has the following synopsis: Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, members of the colony ship Covenant discover what they think to be an uncharted paradise. It’s been 13 years since the Galactica reached Earth. We watched in the 2009 finale “Daybreak” as Admiral Adama, President Roslin, Apollo, Starbuck, Gaius Baltar, and Caprica Six walked towards a bright and unwritten future in their new home. It was a cathartic (but predictably divisive) ending to a six-year TV journey that remains one of the best and most influential in science fiction history. There’s no question that Battlestar Galactica paved the way for other serious, gritty political sci-fi dramas like The Expanse and the recently released Foundation adaptation.
But Battlestar Galactica‘s legacy is one thing. What about its future? That’s a question NBCUniversal has struggled to answer in the years since our heroes first touched down on our planet. There were multiple attempts at spin-offs directly after the flagship series finale on the Syfy channel, including two prequels — Caprica, which told the story of Bill Adama...

Fresh from shepherding the “X-Men” franchise for over a decade, Simon Kinberg has signed on to write and produce Universal’s feature adaptation of the sci-fi franchise “Battlestar Galactica,” Variety has confirmed.
Kinberg is joining producer Dylan Clark, who has long overseen development on a “BSG” movie for the studio. While Kinberg has also branched out into directing with 2019’s “X-Men” feature “Dark Phoenix” and 2021’s spy thriller “The 355,” he is not looking to direct this project.
“‘Battlestar Galactica’ is one of the holy grails in science fiction, and I couldn’t be more excited about bringing something new to the franchise, while honoring what’s made it so iconic and enduring,” Kinberg said in a statement. “I’m so grateful that Dylan and my partners at Universal have trusted me with this incredible universe.”

Amazingly, Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant opened in June and is already out on video disc. The film’s lackluster reviews and weak box office had 20th Century Home Entertainment get this out to begin bringing in the cash the film failed to generate. The good news is that the movie is better than you were led to believe and the disc’s special features are well worth a look.
Picking up 10 years after Prometheus, this film finally begins to fill in the backstory of the acid-spewing Xenomorphs. The biggest challenge with this entry is that Scott declares in one feature he wanted to scare the shit out of his audience but had to contend with viewers who have had nearly 40 years of chest-bursting, hissing, tail-wagging, nasty bug-like beasties chasing and eating humans. Thankfully, he’s up to the challenge by finding fresh angles and editing techniques to shock his...

It’s no secret that Alien: Covenant underwent some creative tinkering all throughout development. Shortly after the release of Prometheus in 2012, Ridley Scott’s prequel-sequel initially entered development bearing the title Alien: Paradise – if Damon Lindelof is to be believed, that arc has been folded into the as-yet-untitled third film in Scott’s prequel saga – when John Logan, Dante Harper, Michael Green, and Jack Paglen all contributed to the story in some shape or form.
That left Ridley Scott with plenty of material to work from, and it’s small wonder why the filmmaker wound up cutting a full 20 minutes from the theatrical version of Alien: Covenant. The finer details of those deleted scenes remain a mystery for now, but it seems Alien-Covenant – the website, not the movie – has unearthed details pertaining to a nail-biting encounter between the Xenomorph and the ghoul-like Neomorph that was reportedly left on...

The MonsterVerse, featuring Godzilla and King Kong, is in full swing, following 2014's release of Godzilla and this year's Kong: Skull Island. Not to be confused with Universal's universe featuring its own classic monsters, now called Dark Universe, the MonsterVerse's next chapter will be Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019. Following that sequel to 2014's Godzilla, Godzilla Vs. Kong is set to bring the two legendary monsters together in 2020.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed the director attached to Godzilla Vs. Kong, and it's neither Godzilla's Gareth Edwards or Kong: Skull Island's Jordan Voght-Roberts. Adam Wingard, known for his work on horror films such as You're Next, The Guest, and 2016's remake of Blair Witch, has been tapped to direct the feature, from a script crafted by a writer's room including Terry Rossio (Pirates of the Caribbean), Patrick McKay and J.D. Adam Wingard, the director best known for his low-budget films such as You're Next and The Guest has landed his biggest movie directing gig yet. According to Variety, he is officially set to direct the highly anticipated Godzilla Vs. Kong film for Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros.
This giant monster universe all started with Gareth Edwards' 2014 film Godzilla and it was followed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts' Kong: Skull Island. Before Godzilla Vs. Kong comes out, though, we have Godzilla: King of the Monsters coming from director Michael Dougherty.
Wingard is currently working on the live-action adaptation of Death Note for Netflix. He seems like a solid directing choice for this project, regardless of the fact he directed that terrible Blair Witch movie that came out last year. It will be interesting to see what he ends up doing with Godzilla Vs. Kong, especially with the big budget he'll have to work with.

One of the horror genre’s most promising talents, Adam Wingard, has been chosen to direct Godzilla vs. Kong, which Warner Bros. and Legendary are currently prepping ahead of its 2020 release. As you no doubt know, the film will be part of the studios’ new cinematic universe, one that began in 2014 with Godzilla and continued earlier this year with Kong: Skull Island.

Say what you will about his final products, but Ridley Scott has spent quite a bit of time in the Alien world. From the aforementioned Alien to Prometheus, he has dabbled with xenomorphs more than anyone else. This week, he returns to the world once again with Alien: Covenant, a franchise outing that attempts to split the difference. It’s Scott trying to have his cake and eat it too. As you might have seen hinted over the past week or two by yours truly, I didn’t think it worked, but reviews so far have been divisive. Some love this flick, while others aren’t fans. In other words, it’s very much a Scott outing and a summer blockbuster. The film is both a sequel to Prometheus as well as a prequel to Alien. Here, we follow the crew of the colony ship Covenant. Filled with sleeping settlers...

'Alien: Covenant' review: Michael Fassbender plays android brothers David and Walter in this effective sequel to Ridley Scott's muddled 'Prometheus.' 'Alien: Covenant' review: Recapturing 'some of the excitement, awe, and horror' of 1979 original Before we get to Alien: Covenant, a rant about its predecessor, Prometheus. The problem with Ridley Scott's 2012 return to the Alien universe is that the more we learned about the skeletal, seething, phallic, vicious xenomorphs, the looser their hold on our cinematic subconscious. Much of the effectiveness of Scott's 1979 franchise starter lies in its cruel randomness; the tragedy of a horrible death being the result of bumping into the wrong stranger on the wrong street on the wrong night. Jettisoning such primal simplicity, Prometheus suggested a farfetched connection between the aliens and mankind. The result was a muddled attempt at expanding the Alien universe so it could address no less than the origins of humanity.

MaryAnn’s quick take… A rote disappointment. There is nothing shocking or even mildly unexpected here. But there is an ironic weakening of the power of the xenomorphs to terrify. I’m “biast” (pro): love Alien and Aliens
I’m “biast” (con): wasn’t crazy about Prometheus
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
It’s difficult to imagine that there will ever be a movie scene as unexpected and as shocking as that bit in Alien — yeah, that bit — when a tiny horrifying alien creature, all teeth and slither, bursts out of poor John Hurt’s chest and slowly gawps around as if to say, “That’s right, meatbags: I, your worst nightmare, have arrived.” We sure as hell are not going to see a replication of the paralyzing terror those of us in the cinema darkness shared with the human onlookers onscreen if no...

Movies are the new Television. Well, sort of. In recent years, in the midst of mass sequelization and the rise of long-running film franchises, it’s become commonplace to plan out your movies well in advance of their release. Perhaps best known for this is Marvel Studios. Following the success of Phase 1 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they’ve announced their slate of films beforehand in advance. The folks over at Paramount took this idea and escalated it to the next level, but announcing a writers room led by Oscar-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman to map out the future of the Transformers franchise. Now, it sounds like the folks over at the MonsterVerse will be doing the same for the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong movie.

If there’s one thing you can say about Ridley Scott films, it is that they are never lacking in marketing. Not wishing to change that formula, the teasing of Alien: Covenant continues, with the release of the tiniest snippet via Facebook to mark the milestone of 365 days until release. For fans of the franchise, it will be a fairly creepy piece of footage featuring, as it does, a shot of one of the characters of the film peacefully snoozing in hyper-sleep. We know, though, that terrible things tend to happen when you hyper-sleep in an Alien movie.

Following on from their success with "Salem," "Manhattan," "Outsiders" and "Underground," Wgn America is continuing its original scripted programming push with plans for an ambitious new series entitled "Roadside Picnic".
Alan Taylor ("Thor: The Dark World," "Game of Thrones") will direct and Jack Paglen ("Alien: Covenant") will pen the script for the series which is based on the novel of the same name by Russian writers Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. That book was previously adapted to the screen by Andrei Tarkovsky in 1979 into his legendary film "Stalker".
Deadline reports that "Watchmen" and "The Good Wife" alum Matthew Goode has signed on to star in the series with the pilot episode to be shot shortly. Goode play Red, a former 'Stalker' who enters the 'Zone,' an area that was once briefly inhabited by alien visitors - his mission is to scavenge technology.

First she was in, then it was only a cameo, then she was out. Now it looks like Noomi Rapace is back in for Ridley Scott's "Alien: Covenant" at 20th Century Fox.
Deadline reports that Rapace will reprise her role as Elizabeth Shaw, the lead character from "Prometheus" in this follow-up which is currently shooting in Sydney, Australia.
The actress will reportedly shoot several weeks worth of scenes for the film which also stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Danny McBride, Demian Bichir, Jussie Smolett, Amy Seimetz, Carmen Ejogo, Callie Hernandez and Billy Crudup.
The second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with "Prometheus," "Alien: Covenant" connects directly to Ridley Scott’s 1979 classic and begins with the colony ship Covenant bound for a remote planet - a dark, dangerous world whose sole inhabitant is the 'synthetic' David, survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.
Jack Paglen and Michael Green are providing the screenplay.

Remember a few years ago when Universal was working on a Battlestar Galactica feature film? Turns out it's still happening and it has some exciting new names attached. We first have to go all the way back to 2009 when work on this film project first started. The 2003/4 Syfy reboot of the 70s series was just wrapping up and Universal got together with Glen A. Larson to start work in a big-screen version. The project was meant to be a reimagining of the story which did not continue with the continuity of the original television series or the reboot but would include the characters we know like Adama, Starbuck, and Baltar. Bryan Singer was attached to direct at one point and in 2011 John Orloff was close to writing, telling Deadline “I have wanted to write this movie since I was 12 years old, and built a Galactica model from scratch out of balsa wood, cardboard, old model parts and LEDs. I love BSG, and I would pass on the job rather than frak it up.” Things were quiet for a bit and then in 2014 Universal hired Transcendence writer Jack Paglen (who's also worked on Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant) for screenwriting duties. Earlier this year they picked up Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark of Bluegrass Films to produce but now we get to the really exciting news. Deadline reports on a new writer and a possible new director: The long-awaited big-screen transfer of the Glen Larson 1978 TV series is moving forward at Universal. Lisa Joy, who scripted and is exec producer on HBO’s series Westworld, is writing the script. Francis Lawrence is circling the movie to direct...Numerous directors have taken cracks at the feature film version over the years. It gives Universal a strong chance to create another tentpole franchise. This is excellent news from where I'm standing. Joy's credits also include Pushing Daisies and Burn Notice. She was also writing a film for Sony Pictures in 2014 which would have focused on female characters from Spider-Man lore, though there hasn't been any updates on that for a while. Lawrence of course ushered the last three installments of The Hunger Games franchise to screen and I'd be interested to see what his BSG would look like. Here's a tip for you though - keep Katee Sackhoff as Starbuck.

20th Century Fox closed out the festivities of yesterday's 'Alien Day' with the first official photo release from Ridley Scott's "Alien: Covenant". In typical teasing form, the picture is of a crew patch for the titular ship in the film.
Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Danny McBride, Demian Bichir, Jussie Smolett, Amy Seimetz, Carmen Ejogo, Callie Hernandez, and Billy Crudup star in the film which is the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with "Prometheus" and connects directly with Scott's original 1979 feature.
In the new film the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discover the planet's sole inhabitant is the 'synthetic' David, survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition. Jack Paglen and Michael Green penned the screenplay which Scott will once again direct. The film is in early production in Sydney Australia.

Not taking its "Manhattan" cancellation lying down, Wgn America has picked up two new drama pilots - most notably an adaptation of DC Comics' "Scalped".
"Scalped" is described as a modern-day crime story set in the world of a Native American Indian reservation. Lincoln Red Crow is the ambitious chief of a community who must deal with Dashiell Bad Horse who has returned home after years away from the reservation. First published in 2007, it ran for sixty issues.
Doug Jung will pen the script and executive produce alongside DC Entertainment creative director Geoff Johns.
The other series is an adaptation of Arkady and Boris Strugatsky's 1971 novel "Roadside Picnic". That story explores a near-future world where aliens have come and gone, leaving humankind to explore the mysteries left behind as well as the societal ramifications of their visit.
The ation follows Red, a 'stalker' who ventures into the abandoned remains of the alien culture.

Michael Fassbender’s reticent synthetic David notwithstanding, director Ridley Scott has all but hit the hard reset button when it comes to casting on Alien: Covenant, with today bringing word of two new additions to the ensemble.
Barley a day after we learned of Jussie Smolett, Amy Seimetz, Carmen Ejogo and Callie Hernandez joining the sci-fi sequel, Deadline is reporting that Covenant has enough room in its hulls for two late additions: Billy Crudup and Australian actor Alex England. The former has also secured a role in the Natalie Portman-fronted biopic, Jackie.
Circling back to Alien: Covenant, however, and now that the starry cast is surely complete, Fox and Ridley Scott will set about getting the wheels in motion. Jack Paglen (Transcendence) and Michael Green (Green Lantern) are attached to pen a script for the sequel formerly known as Prometheus 2, and now that Noomi Rapace’s Elizabeth Shaw...

Almost nobody would’ve expected Ava DuVernay to become a leading fantasy filmmaker, yet the director’s post-Selma path has been littered with one such project after the other. Battlestar Galactica ruled the airwaves for science fiction fans as a rather goofy TV show in the late 1970s and then again as a more serious drama on basic cable, running from 2003 through 2009, followed by a prequel series. Ever since then, a big-screen version has been touted, most recently nearly two years ago, when we heard that Jack Paglen (Trandescence) would be writing "a complete reimaging of the story." Now comes word that the project is starting over yet again with three new producers, Michael De Luca (Fifty Shades of Grey, Dracula Untold) and the team of Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark (Ted 2, the upcoming The Free State of Jones). According to The Hollywood Reporter, no writers are currently attached, which would appear to indicate that Paglen's script did...

Looks like Star Trek and Star Wars are set to have another competitor in the near future. While not quite as beloved and mainstream as those two series, Battlestar Galactica is a well-respected property in its own right. From the short-lived original series in the late 1970s, to the more recent (and more revered) mid-2000s series, Battlestar certainly has the capacity to be a huge mainstream hit if handled properly.
A live-action film has been in development since 1999, and several years after the run of the mid-2000 series, it seems like now is as good a time as any to trudge forth with a feature film. Universal has now hired producer Michael De Luca to take on the project, The Tracking Board reports.
There is very little information on the film itself, but it's said not to be connected with the 2004 series, but will be drawing from the original 1978 series.

Former New Line chief and Oscar-nominated producer Michael De Luca has signed on to produce a film adaptation of Glen A. Larson's beloved series "Battlestar Galactica" for Universal Pictures.
The story follows a group of humans who survived a surprise attack by intelligent robots known as Cylons, which decimated the human civilizations of the twelve planets. The survivors were led by the warship Galactica to find a mythic thirteenth planet named Earth.
The project has been in development since 1999, years before Ron Moore's much acclaimed 2003 TV series reboot on Syfy. The big screen take on Battlestar Galactica has taken a slow shuffle forward...
Well, the box office returns of Star Wars: The Force Awakens may just have had studios scrambling to their cupboards to see what sci-fi and space projects they have locked away there. Universal? It's found its long-in-gestation big screen take on Battlestar Galactica.
Once upon a time, Bryan Singer was set to bring this one to the screen, based more on the original television series than the Sci-Fi channel reboot. Singer, though, then rejoined the X-Men movie franchise (which has taken up a fair amount of his subsequent time), and his next film after this summer's X-Men: Apocalypse is 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea for Fox.
He remains involved with Battlestar Galactica we understand, and is still the only director we know of attached to the project. He's certainly still serving as executive producer at least.

The worst kept secret in the film production ether of the past few months just became official - Ridley Scott is set to shoot "Alien: Covenant" at Sydney's Fox Studios from March next year. Pre-production is now underway and the shoot will run for sixteen weeks.
The story has the colony ship Covenant bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, an uncharted paradise that is actually a dark, dangerous world whose sole inhabitant is the 'synthetic' David (Michael Fassbender) who survived the doomed Prometheus expedition.
As previously indicated this is the next chapter in a series of prequels that lead directly to the events depicted in Scott's 1979 classic "Alien". Up until this point it had been assumed to be a trilogy with 2012's "Prometheus" serving as the first film and 'Covenant' as the second.
Scott however has since dismissed that report, saying that there will...

As the Prometheus sequel gets another title, we try to answer the questions it raises. So Alien: Covenant - what’s that all about?
When the final credits rolled on Ridley Scott’s Prometheus in 2012, the cloying sensation was not of wondrous, terrifying stories still to be told, but of writers having just painted themselves into a corner.
We watched as Noomi Rapace’s wide-eyed space archaeologist Elizabeth Shaw blasted off in a commandeered alien ship, her stated aim being to find the home planet of the Engineers. Her only companion on the journey was a severed head belonging to David (Michael Fassbender), a character she enjoyed a fractious relationship with, to say the least.
The galactic adventures of an archaeologist and her pet severed head doesn’t, at least to our ears, sound like the most exciting premise for a sequel. And even Prometheus’ fan-baiting final shot,...

With production poised to begin in February of next year, Variety has learned that 20th Century Fox has recruited Skyfall scribe John Logan in order to revise the script for Alien: Paradise Lost, Ridley Scott’s follow-up to 2012’s Prometheus. It’ll mark a reunion for the esteemed director, who first collaborated with Logan on swords and sandals epic Gladiator more than a decade ago.
Part and parcel of Paradise Lost‘s prolonged pre-production window is the script being subject to numerous revisions. Prior to Logan coming aboard – fresh from co-writing Sam Mendes’ Spectre – Jack Paglen (Transcendence) and Michael Green (Blade Runner 2) penned early drafts of Scott’s sci-fi sequel, and it’s understood that Logan’s addition to the project will help piece that vision together.

Ridley Scott may currently be doing the press rounds to promote his latest film, The Martian, but that hasn’t stopped him from getting the wheels in motion for his next project. The follow-up to 2012’s Prometheus, now titled Alien: Paradise Lost, is already lined up as Scott’s next film as director, and will – as indicated by the title – have connective tissue with both Prometheus and the Alien franchise.
Understandably, some people are ambivalent about Scott returning to the realm of Alien and Prometheus, especially when the 2012 movie drew such a mixed response.
