Public broadcaster Kcet once again led all local TV stations in nominations for the Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards, announced on Tuesday by the Television Academy. Kcet landed 23 nods this year overall, up from 20 last year. It was followed by Telemundo’s Kvea, which boasted 21 noms.
After that, with 19 nominations, was relative newcomer Spectrum News 1, the cable channel that launched in 2018 and has made waves for its enterprise reports, features and coverage of Southern California. Then came Univision’s Kmex, with 16.
Among the traditional English-language commercial broadcasters, Kabc-tv led with 12 nominations. That’s quite a change from the days when management at the ABC-owned station declined to submit Kabc in the local Emmy race.
As usual, all stations that enter are immediately nominated in the daily morning newscast (4 a.m. to 11 a.m.), daily daytime newscast (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.), and daily evening newscast (7 p.m. to 12 a.

A six-episode web series has figured out a narrative method for riffing on current pop culture. The Horseshoe Cinema channel is home to Film Buff, which follows the life of a somewhat-schlubby film podcaster. Film Buff is one of four web series on Horseshoe, a YouTube channel run by Andy Viner and Charles DeRosa. It stars Andrew Wynn as Paul, the series' titular movie lover, who hosts "Ohio's #1 movie podcast." In the first episode, viewers quickly learn that Paul's leads a fairly sad existence. He has only a few thousand fans and he has trouble booking guests for his podcast, which leads him to invite a number of colorful characters to join his program. Each episode features a recently released movie or TV show, giving the series a "ripped from the headlines" feel. A Grand Budapest Hotel episode makes fun of Wes Anderson and his scarf-clad fans, while the most...

If you dug the rebound sex/vampire mash-up in his feature debut, “Dick Night,” how about a little free and timely hilarity from writer-director Andy Viner in the form of a web series? “Kirstin Lives in Los Angeles” stars Kirstin Eggers as a woman trying to live the dream in Los Angeles, but winds up suffering through a comedy of errors courtesy of a Kickstarter con artist, some Twitter prostitution, and more. The series consists of five episodes, each four to five minutes long, and are well worthy of a binge watch if you’d like a boost at poor Kirstin’s expense. Check out Chapter 1 one below and if you’d like [ Read More ]

Kirsten Lives In Los Angeles, a new web series by Andy Viner and Chuck DeRosa, understands that weird, imperfect characters are the best kind of characters. It puts its titular protagonist in the center of a world occupied by Twitter prostitutes, Kickstarter con artists, and wacky high-end furniture craftsmen, letting the zany situations that arise speak for themselves. The lead actress the series is Kirsten Eggers, who has had some experience on network TV via a role on ABC's Work It. Here, she does most of her work with her face, which gives viewers a nonstop contortionist act of bulging eyeballs and twisted grimaces. Kirsten isn't the most vocal of leading ladies, but she is definitely one of the most emotive. The first episode has her working through an awkward situation at work, where her boss, who creates expensive, gnarly wooden tables, accidentally saws off his own penis while working...

As someone currently pursuing a master’s in film producing, I’m immensely impressed by film school students who go on to make their first features a reality, and so is the case with Andy Viner and his movie, “Dick Night.” The film focuses on Rachel (Jennifer June Ross), an ex-bride-to-be who can’t recover from being left at the altar. However, today’s the today she’s going to ditch her pajamas and pizza and try to get her life back on track. The only problem? Those darn vicious vampires living next door! In honor of “Dick Night’s” October 30th debut, Viner took the time to chat about his journey from film school at [ Read More ]

The Arizona Underground Film Festival keeps picking and screening the best in world extreme cinema and their fourth annual edition, which will run Sep. 16-24 in Tucson is no exception, compiling outrageous cult epics from countries such as Japan, Switzerland and Cuba; as well as some local nastiness produced in the fest’s own backyard.
The fest opens with Jack Perez’s Some Guy Who Kills People, a comedy thriller executive produced by John Landis and starring Kevin Corrigan as a loser who gets sadistic revenge on those he feels have wronged him.
While the opening night film is a big name affair, Auff is also celebrating local freaky film fare with films such as the film noir Sweet Love and Deadly, directed by Paul Clinco; and the horror comedy Dick Night, directed by Andy Viner.
